Who else but rural residents, not spoiled by good roads, need reliable and durable motorcycles. But where can I get them? One option is to convert an existing motorcycle at hand into an enduro. For example, “Sunrise” or “Owl”. To do this, you will need available tools and tools. And, of course, available domestic components.

The basis of the frame design was laid in pre-war Germany, where Kovrov devices trace their origins. But there the roads were better and the engine power was less. Nowadays, dynamic driving on a country road (especially on old Voskhods) resembles horse racing on a rubber hose. What's scary is not so much the poor handling (you eventually get used to it), but the fact that at some point the frame may simply fall apart. The weakest point is the “envelope” - the front part of the frame. To strengthen it, you will need a piece of pipe 250 mm long and 18 mm in diameter (wall thickness 1.5-2 mm). We weld it as shown in the figure (it is advisable to carry out all welding work semi-automatically and “lay” the seams only along the pipes). The bobbin mount must be cut off and welded either to this pipe or elsewhere in the frame.

We will weld a corner 150 mm long and 15 mm wide to the front pipe of the “envelope”, having previously cut off the bracket for installing the roll bars with a grinder. The mounting kit from the tool kit is perfect for this purpose: it is made of good heat-treated steel and also looks aesthetically pleasing.

Another weak point of the frame is the plate with a welded bushing through which the pendulum axis passes. This part has tormented more than one generation of motorcyclists: the bushing breaks off along with the “meat” of the plate. Let's weld one more plate with a bushing and install a longer axle - homemade, or from "Farmer". It is best to cut the plates with a grinder from an old frame - they are often found in landfills. We weld the plate as shown in the figure: on the left side the right one, and on the right side the left one, only bend the “tail” in the opposite direction.

And the last weak point of the frame is its tail. We will strengthen it with a steel plate 15 mm wide and about 120 mm long, having previously rounded off the sharp corners.

When driving fast over uneven surfaces or after jumps, the suspension often breaks and significant dynamic loads are placed on the pegs. Gradually they bend down, and riding them in a sports stance becomes downright dangerous. To strengthen the part of the frame in the area of ​​the driver’s footrests, we will weld two mounting brackets from below to the tubes (they fit perfectly according to the configuration) or two suitable corners.

The footrests themselves leave much to be desired: when water and dirt get on their rubber surface, the feet begin to slide. Remove the rubber bands, use a file or grinder to remove the weld and knock out the pin. In place of the standard folding pipe, we will install footpegs from any motocross motorcycle. If it is not possible to get them, we will weld a steel strip 180 mm long, 3 mm thick and 10 mm wide, curved in the shape of a “U”. Then use a triangular file to cut the teeth on the strip. Now the shoes will not fall off the steps. Another option for modifying the running boards is to weld a dozen and a half “dots” onto the standard folding pipe after removing the rubber band.

The “owl” fork itself is not bad (especially when riding alone): the travel is 150 mm, the “hydraulics” do not leak for quite a long time, and can withstand the abuse of off-road conditions. Disappointing is its low torsional rigidity. A motorized yoke can partially eliminate this drawback. Its installation does not require any welding work, you just need to find the yoke itself with clamps. As a last resort, it is not difficult to make it yourself. The other option is more complicated. Welding and another lower cross beam will be required. Let's cut the steering column tube and weld the lower assembly to the lower yoke. In this case, the corrugations will have to be eliminated.

Both for dynamic driving and for “crawling” at low speeds off-road, it is necessary to increase the transmission ratio. The easiest way to do this is to replace the stock 15-tooth drive sprocket with a 13- or 14-tooth one. Most likely, you will have to make it yourself (you can only get a factory-made one from Kovrov trial machines in Kovrov, and even then with difficulty). It is clear that in this case the maximum speed on the highway will decrease, and fuel consumption will also increase.

It is better to remove the “flounder” (chain casing body) and corrugations immediately. Of course, the chain and sprockets will wear out faster, but the likelihood of them jamming at the most inopportune moment will decrease. If possible, get an O-ring chain. Some of the Kovrov products began to be equipped with such chains produced by ChZ.

There is a spacer sleeve in the body of the “flounder”, which will still be needed. It should be removed by splitting or melting the body, or a new one should be machined.

In principle, for a light 120-kilogram car, standard drum brakes are sufficient. The following simple measures will help to improve their performance a little. Let's move the base of the front brake pads from the right side to the left. This will increase the bending radius of the cable and make the brake more compliant. If you are installing a handlebar from a motocross motorcycle (which is highly desirable), then moving the base is simply necessary - otherwise the cable length will not be enough. Or the cable will have to be removed from the cross bike. Installing brake pads with a floating mechanism from the Farmer motorcycle will ensure the best contact between the pads and the drum, and the rounding of the standard cam will ensure quick release of the brakes. As for the rear brakes, turn the flag 180 degrees up so that the brake rod passes over the rear wheel axle. This will protect the rod from possible mechanical damage. A low-stiffness spring or rubber band from the chamber, attached to the rod and the threaded end of the chain tensioner, will ensure quick and reliable release of the brakes, no matter what dirt gets into the drum. And the brakes feel much better after this operation.

Unfortunately, all fantasies about replacing tires with more “enduristic” tires come down to the 16-inch wheel size. On the foreign car market, however, you can come across used tires from children's cross-country bikes. At one time, domestic semi-cross tires from the “Okhotnik”, an off-road modification of the “Voskhod”, were sold. An alternative could be the universal Korean “Golden Boy” tires - some of the Owls are now equipped with them. You can improve the “grip” of serial tires using a knife, drill or grinder, cutting through and removing part of the tread blocks. How is a topic for another discussion.

Then the cylinder was bored out for a new piston (the liner became thinner , I thought it would burst, but nothing happened during operation). Three rings were installed on the new piston. Having put everything together, I began to start it. The engine refused to work normally with its original carburetor, I had to install a Java carburetor from a two-cylinder (there was no other). For many years, domestic motorcycles and scooters, as well as Buran snowmobiles, were equipped with carburetors of the K62 family or their varieties. Operation revealed a number of design flaws.

Their elimination required a major modernization of carburetors and led to the emergence of an essentially new device, which was designated K65. Its implementation began at the end of last year and will be completed this year.

Since the carburetor has a long life ahead of it, we asked the engineers of the Leningrad Carburetor Plant to tell us more about it.

At first glance, the K65 carburetor is not much different from the usual K62. But this is precisely at first glance, since modernization affected not the form, but the content. And you will be convinced of this when, together with us, you examine the structure, principles of operation and adjustment of the new device shown in Fig. 1.

First, let's talk about the design and operating principles.

It all starts with a system of approach and maintaining a constant fuel level. Through fitting 20 it reaches the fuel valve 15, which is equipped with an elastic lock washer. The valve rests on a tongue 18 connected to plastic floats 17, which are interconnected and rotate freely on an axis 16.

If for some reason the fuel level rises, its excess is discharged from the float chamber through the drainage hole 32. To prevent the pressure in the float chamber from increasing when heated, it is connected to the atmosphere by an unbalancing channel 31.

The main metering system consists of a sprayer 5, a main fuel jet 6, a throttle needle 7 and an air supply channel 8. Fuel from the float chamber through the main fuel jet 6 enters the sprayer 5, rising under the influence of vacuum along the gap between the sprayer and the throttle needle 7.

At the exit from the atomizer, it is mixed with air entering through channel 8 through the hole in the atomizer body. The throttle needle ensures engine operation at medium speeds and can be set to one of five positions.

At maximum power modes, fuel consumption is determined mainly by the throughput of the main fuel nozzle.

Reliable fastening of the atomizer is ensured by a lock washer 14 installed under the fuel pipe 9.

The idle system consists, in turn, of a fuel pipe 9, an air channel 10, mixture quality screws 11 and mixture quantity 27, idle hole 12 and transition hole 13.

When the engine is idling, under the influence of vacuum in the mixing chamber behind the throttle, the fuel rises through tube 9 and mixes with air entering through channel 10.

The resulting emulsion, when the throttle is opened slightly (at low speeds), comes out only through hole 12. With a further rise in the throttle and an increase in speed, the vacuum in the area of ​​hole 13 increases and the emulsion also begins to flow through it.

Thus, the fuel supply increases as the speed increases.

The main system for starting and warming up the engine. On carburetors of different modifications, different systems of enrichment devices are used: on K65S and K65V - a starting device with an autonomous drive; on K65G and K65Zh - with cable drive; on K65I and K65D - corrector-enrichment. Let's look at them in that order.

The normal position of the device is closed. In this case, the needle 39 with the rubber seal 38 blocks the fuel channel, and the side surface of the plunger 37 blocks channels 33 and 34. To turn on the starting device, you need to lift the rod 40 up and turn it approximately 90°. In this case, the extrusions on the rod will come out of the grooves of the guide 35 and will be fixed at its upper end.

The plunger will rise, opening channels 33 and 34 and fuel channel 48. Under the influence of vacuum, fuel from well A will enter the cavity under the plunger, mix with air and be fed into the mixing chamber in the form of an emulsion. The volume of fuel in the well is sufficient for a high one-time supply at the time of start.

After starting the engine, the fuel level in the well decreases and the composition of the mixture becomes leaner.

With the plunger fully raised, the greatest enrichment of the mixture necessary to start the engine is achieved. As the plunger is lowered, the mixture becomes increasingly lean as the gap between the needle 42 and the channel wall decreases. When the plunger is completely lowered, the needle with the seal

An additional starting device (float suppressor) is used at air temperatures from +5C and below. Using it requires no explanation.

Having examined the design and operating principle of individual systems, we can now move on to issues of operation and adjustments.

Before installing the carburetor, you need to remove its cover 2 with the throttle assembly. The cover is a rather complex subassembly on which the throttle lift screw 27, guide 28, gasket 26, throttle lift limiter 30, throttle 21 and its spring 24, protective cap 29 are installed. Screw 27 is connected to the throttle by a rod.

The throttle spring 24 simultaneously holds the needle 7 through the lock 22.

The U-shaped brass throttle has two shaped holes and one round one. The latter, located in the center, serves to install and fasten the needle, the shaped one on the cutout side is for fastening the throttle cable, the T-shaped one is for attaching the rod of the screw 27.
