Voskhod 3M is a road motorcycle that was produced in Soviet times and rightfully earned the love and respect of domestic motorcycle enthusiasts. There probably wasn’t a single Soviet teenager who didn’t know what Voskhod 3M was, and even now, thanks to its decent quality and reliable safety system, this model deserves the attention of motorcyclists. Even the fact that with its own weight of 122 kilograms, the motorcycle can withstand a load of 160 kilograms is in itself admirable.
This model of the Voskhod motorcycle series was put into production in the 83rd year of the last century at the Degtyarev plant (ZiD) in Kovrov and was produced until 1993.
In fact, Voskhod 3m is a modernized version of Voskhod 3, which was a continuation of the popular Kovrovets motorcycle series produced from 1957 to 1965.
This motorcycle has received a number of important quality characteristics that are best reflected in the performance parameters of the model compared to its predecessor.
So the motorcycle began to be equipped with an FG-137B headlight, which had a new and improved lens. The surface area of the cylinder fins was also increased, which improved cooling. The motorcycle's electrical system began to operate from a 12-volt generator, which increased its reliability. In addition, the model became three kilograms lighter than its predecessor and began to weigh 122 kilograms. The motorcycle now has the ability to accelerate to 105 kilometers per hour, which is a pretty good result even by today’s standards for this type of motor vehicle.
It is also worth noting that the motorcycle began to be equipped with brake drum lining wear indicators, which made servicing the motorcycle easier. And the most significant advantage of this model, most likely, was that the motorcycle was quite unpretentious in use and maintenance. We can say that this is the most suitable model for inexperienced motorcyclists just starting out.
Technical features of the Voskhod 3M motorcycle
The main characteristics of the motorcycle include the following technical indicators:
- Ground clearance is 125 millimeters. This indicator makes it possible to operate a motorcycle on almost all types of roads (asphalt concrete, gravel, country roads, etc.).
- The length of the motorcycle is 200 centimeters, the width is 85 centimeters, and the height of the two-wheeled friend is 120 centimeters. Thanks to these parameters, two people can sit quite comfortably on the motorcycle.
- The mass of the two-wheeled vehicle is 122 kilograms. With a load of 160 kilograms, it retains its driving performance.
- The model is equipped with a single-cylinder two-stroke carburetor engine with a displacement of 173 cubic centimeters.
- The engine power is 15 l/s and the maximum speed is 105 kilometers per hour.
- per hundred kilometers is 4.2 liters, which is 300 milliliters less than its predecessor.
- The fuel tank holds 14 liters.
- The gearbox is four-speed, gear shifting is carried out using a special pedal.
- The motorcycle has a multi-disc clutch in an oil bath. The clutch is controlled using the right hand.
- The basis of the motorcycle frame is a metal pipe on which all components are located.
- The braking system is mechanical drum type, which reduces the overall weight and simplifies maintenance.
- The braking distance at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour is 20 meters, which is a fairly good indicator.
- There is an anti-theft system that operates by locking the steering wheel.
- Unlike its predecessor, the steering wheel of this model can change position, which makes the ride more comfortable for motorcyclists of almost any height.
- The power supply system runs on 12 volts and has a 65-watt generator. This together made it possible to install more modern lighting devices and improved engine starting.
- The suspension of the motorcycle is represented by a front telescopic fork and a rear pendulum system.
- The wheels of the model are spoked 16 inches in diameter.
- The headlight complied with modern European light transmission requirements.
Throttle type DR-100
Installed in the right tool box. From the generator braking signal circuit, through the throttle, which is a device that complements the parametric control of the generator, the circuit of the speedometer, city driving and license plate lighting lamps is powered.
During operation, the spark plug must be periodically cleaned of carbon deposits and the gap between the electrodes must be adjusted, which should be within 0.6-0.7 mm, which is ensured by bending the outer electrode. To seal, a copper-asbestos gasket is placed between the spark plug and the cylinder head. To eliminate radio interference created by the ignition system, a shielded tip of type A-4 is placed on the spark plug.
During operation it does not require special care. Basically, caring for the headlight comes down to removing dust from the internal cavity of the optical element by blowing air.
Switch 124005490201 is used as a central software switch that provides the necessary switching of lighting equipment on a motorcycle. The switch has three operating positions >, >, > in accordance with the following operating modes:
Caring for the central switch comes down to periodically checking the reliability of the switch in the headlight and cleaning the moving and fixed contacts from dust and dirt by washing them in gasoline.
External view of the motorcycle sunrise 3m
When compared with other Soviet-era motorcycle models, the Voskhod 3M looks quite attractive and has the outlines of a classic bike. The motorcycle was equipped with a low chrome-plated steering wheel, on which rear-view mirrors and devices that ensure control of the motorcycle (clutch handle, turning on turns and headlights, etc.) were attached. The model is equipped with a large round headlight, which provides diffused light and does not dazzle drivers driving in the oncoming lane. The exhaust pipes are chrome-plated, which adds a certain chic to the motorcycle. The rim of the spoked wheels is also chrome plated. The fuel tank has a rectangular outline.
Particular attention should be paid to the seat, which was of two types, one-piece (one for the passenger and the driver) and separate. If we consider the appearance, it is better to give preference to a solid seat. It makes the motorcycle look somehow more noble. In addition, many models had a small trunk installed in the back (like on a bicycle), which could easily be used to transport small loads.
The last motorcycle in this series rolled off the assembly line in 1992. It was replaced by the modernized Sova motorcycle, more adapted to the realities of the modern market. But for true connoisseurs of Soviet-era motorcycles, the Voskhod 3m will forever be remembered as the most reliable, unpretentious and financially affordable motorcycle. Even now there are motorcycle enthusiasts who prefer to have a trouble-free motorcycle in their arsenal. And probably for many representatives of that generation it will not be a revelation that Voskhod 3M was and is a true friend for motorcyclists.
In 1983, the Kavrovsky plant launched the modernized Voskhod 3M motorcycle. The purpose of the modernization was to improve performance and the platform for creating the motorcycle was the Voskhod 2M model. Since the early 90s, serial production of the Voskhod 3M 01 modification began. But still, many owners of this device are not satisfied with the appearance. Therefore, in this article we will talk about tuning sunrise 3m.
External motorcycle tuning
Voskhod 3M was developed during the Soviet era and its appearance reflects the traditions of that time. In order for the appearance of the Voskhod 3M to reflect the individuality of its owner in our time, tuning the motorcycle is necessary: beautiful, sporty, cross-country.
Motorcycle Voskhod 3M_02
The low seating position and high front forks suggest tuning the bike in a sporty style. In order to give the Voskhod bike a sporty look, 3M tuning will primarily consist of raising the rear shock absorbers and replacing the exhaust pipe elbow. This ensures that the location of the exhaust pipe matches the level of the rear axle. The design of the motorcycle will be improved and the traction of the motorcycle will be increased by installing exhaust pipes of increased diameter. External tuning of the Voskhod 3m motorcycle can consist of painting, chrome plating, replacing the factory knee protection with nickel-plated arches, installing large rearview mirrors and a stepped seat, as well as tuning the wheels.
Sunrise 3
External tuning of a motorcycle will not be complete without installing a sports fairing. In addition to aesthetic benefits, its installation will improve the aerodynamic qualities of the bike. And this, in turn, will have a positive effect on its efficiency and power.

Motorcycle tuning for chopper
For the Voskhod 3M motorcycle, tuning for a chopper involves trimming or purchasing shortened rear shock absorbers. This replacement will help lower the rear of the bike by up to 7 cm. The rear fork and wheel are replaced with wider ones. The angle of inclination of the front fork axis changes. The cylinder covers are equipped with chrome plated cups. Instead of the factory steering wheel, a stylish chopper-style steering wheel is mounted. In the same style, tuning of the headlight, rear lights and dashboard is performed.

Tuning a motorcycle for a cafe-bike
You can do Tuning Sunrise under a cafe racer with your own hands at a reasonable cost. For example, you can independently weld the rear part of the frame, shorten the fork, make mounting brackets for attachments (headlights, speedometer, etc.), trim and fit other parts. It is also quite possible to make the steering wheel and seat yourself. The headlight and brake light are installed from the truck.
Tuning the Voskhod 3M motorcycle as a cafe racer
Self-tuning Voskhod, the price of which will depend only on purchased parts, is quite affordable for most motorists due to the simplicity of the design and the low cost of spare parts. This applies to all modifications of Voskhod. For an old Voskhod 2M motorcycle, tuning will mean a second youth, and Voskhod Owl tuning can add exclusivity features to the latest model from the factory.

Adjusting the K-62V and K65P carburetor
Adjust the idle speed in the following sequence: 1 – screw screw 18 until it stops, which regulates the air supply for idle speed. Then unscrew one turn. 2 – Open the throttle slightly using the throttle. 3 – Start the engine and warm it up. 4 – Using bolt 16, lowering the throttle valve, achieve minimal stable engine operation. 5 – Unscrew screw 18 to set the maximum speed. 6 – Using bolt 16, lower the damper again to minimum speed. 7 – Check the adjustment. Sharply open the throttle with the throttle. If the engine stalls or there is a failure in operation. When switching from idle to main working. The adjustment is incorrect. Screw 18 needs to be used to enrich the fuel mixture - tighten it by a quarter. Or repeat the entire adjustment. 8 – Adjusted correctly, if there is no dip and the motor does not stall. And it continues to gain momentum.
Parts of the cylinder-piston group
Tuning sunrise 3m begins with improving performance characteristics. The maximum speed of the Voskhod 3M motorcycle can be increased by lightening the CPG parts. To do this, we use a milling machine to bore those places that do not affect the strength.
We lighten the connecting rod in the same way. To play it safe, you can find foreign analogues. Next, you need to bore the purge, inlet and outlet channels. This is done in order to better mix and ignite the air-fuel mixture.

The second day began with surprises.
In the morning, getting out of the tent, I noticed a small rickety fence behind the trees. As I got closer, I was a little taken aback - the fence was enclosed by a characteristic elongated mound: a grave. There was no cross or monument. Looking around, I didn’t see any other similar objects. I chose a nice place to spend the night, near the grave. Either because of the twilight or because of fatigue, I did not notice her at all. Having quickly had breakfast and packed up the tent, I headed home from this place. After driving literally 2-3 kilometers I jumped out to some village, the name of which I did not remember. I am still tormented by doubts: did I spend the night near Pelmin Bor or near Serebryanka? Veslyana River. On the other side is the village of Davydovo
Supply system
To make the bike go faster, you need to adjust the original carburetor for a higher fuel supply or replace it with a more efficient one. To install a new carburetor, you need to perform the following steps:
- we grind aluminum bushings under the flange of the pipe attaching the carburetor to the cylinders;
- cut off the edge of the inlet channel;
- take a flange from an old carburetor;
- We fasten all the elements using cold welding.
The assembled carburetor must line up exactly with the intake port.
Modern look
Along with the increase in power characteristics, there is a need to improve the appearance of the unit: installing a new panel, nickel-plated arches, fairings. One of the popular options for tuning a 3m sunrise among drivers is to convert the sunrise to a cross.
The advantages of this option are that the cross bike moves well off-road, is easy to control and does not require fundamental design changes.
Cross version of the motorcycle.
A few simple instructions on how to convey sunrise, tuning for cross.
- When creating a cross bike, wheels play a very important role, since they take the main load. The wheels should be able to absorb strong impacts well. Spoke-based wheels can handle this task. You should select a tire based on the following dimensions: 120/70-17 at the front and 160/60-17 at the rear.
- The front suspension meets more stringent requirements. Unfortunately, a compromise solution is not possible here, since the original fork may not withstand the load. You will have to buy a fork from a motocross bike as a kit.
- The rear suspension is being converted to a single shock absorber. For this purpose, the fork needs to be welded or selected to the required size at a motor disassembly shop. The spring for the shock absorber is selected based on the weight of the bike and the driver. Next, the suspension is adjusted so that the rear wheel travel does not exceed 250 mm.
The Sunrise is a road bike. It was very popular in Soviet times, but is no longer produced. The most popular model is considered the Voskhod 3M, an engine whose repair is completely simple and completely easy to maintain. The reliable design and stability of the bike make Voskhod an excellent friend for any motorcycle enthusiast.
Since nowadays you can only buy such a motorcycle second-hand, you have to tinker with the technical part of the motorcycle. You will be very lucky if the previous owner kept the bike clean and used it according to recommendations. If not, then frequent repairs of the Voskhod engine will take up your free time.
It is considered a direct competitor to the YAVA 350 motorcycle. However, breakdowns of the Voskhod occur much more often. This happens mainly due to the negligence of the owner. Failure to follow operating instructions leads to minor problems that create significant problems. A special feature of 3M is the chassis. The brake linings were equipped with a wear sensor, and corrugated rubber covers
, and there was a protective shield installed on the front wheel. The design of the Voskhod 3M engine also changed slightly after the modification was released. Motor 3M-01 with five-channel cylinder purging and one exhaust window.

Engine diagram
For Voskhod motorcycles, the engine size was the same. It was 173 cm3. In general, all bikes from this manufacturer had the same single-cylinder engine with two power strokes and an air cooling system. The very small volume of the engine produced 10 horsepower and over time, modifications to the engine began to produce power of 14 hp.
If you discover a malfunction and it is related to the operation of the engine, do not put off repairs for a long time. Exacerbating the problem will result in unexpected costs. There is no need to be afraid to overhaul the engine. Not only disassembly, but also assembly of the Voskhod engine is very simple.
Before repairing, carefully inspect the motorcycle for wear or broken parts. After inspection, clean the engine from dirt. It is better to wash it thoroughly with a cleaning agent. Since the main engine problem is the crankshaft bearings, seals and gaskets, let’s consider the process of repairing them:
- First, let's look at installing the crankshaft bearings. To do this, it is necessary to install retaining rings in the pallet halves. Then, using mandrels, insert the main bearings. If you have not done such repairs before, the Voskhod engine diagram will help. The crankshaft moves into the new bearings with force, which creates additional load on
the ball bearing axle when moving. - Insert the crankshaft into the left side of the pan. To prevent the connecting rod from rotating, secure it, otherwise there is a risk of bending it.
- Turn the motor over. We put a pin on the nuts and screw the resulting element onto the studs.
- Pressure must be created on the bearing from the inside. Any bushing that fits the size will do for this. If you choose the wrong size, it will come off and disrupt the operation.
- Once the bearings and bushing are securely installed, we move on to the crankshaft. Tighten it at a distance of no more than 3-4 millimeters from the crank chamber partition.
- Now take a thin rod and move it between the crankshaft and the crank chamber until it passes without much force.
- Remove all fat from the surface of the pan. We lay new gaskets and connect the halves of the pallet to each other, putting the second part on the axle.
At the same time, be careful not to overtighten the crankshaft, otherwise it will move or bend. In this easy way you can replace bearings and gaskets in the engine. As you can see, the work does not require hard-to-find or rare tools.
The Voskhod motorcycle rightfully earned the title of “national” in Soviet times. Its history begins with the release of the K-175 series in 1958 at the Degtyarev plant. All models were equipped with a 175.7 cc single-cylinder power unit. The 3m modification itself was produced from 1983 to 1993.
Voskhod engine tuning for a homemade all-terrain vehicle
The engine of the Voskhod motorcycle is light and has good power, suitable for installation on a homemade all-terrain vehicle. But still, some changes must be made with your own hands in the box. Tuning the Voskhod engine, which will improve the performance of our all-terrain vehicle. For comparison, let's look at the overall given gear ratios (from the crankshaft to the rear wheel). The first data is Voskhod 2m, the following is Kovrovets 175A:
- In first gear Voskhod-2m - 18.42 - Kovrovets 175A - 18.68
- In second gear 12.08 - 11.88
- In third gear 8.98 - 8.49
- In fourth gear 6.06 - 6.06
As you can see, the difference at first speed is not too big, but when moving it is noticeable. All we have to do is change first gear. To do this you need to completely disassemble the engine. The first speed drive gear is not removable and is integral with the input shaft. This means we take the input shaft, the first speed driven gear from Kovrovets 175A and install it on our unit.
The tuning changed the gear ratio from the crankshaft to the rear wheel, improving the all-terrain vehicle's driving performance when passing difficult sections of winter roads. This replacement was tested on a Voskhod-2m motorcycle; when driving on a bad road (clay after rain), the motorcycle moved confidently without slipping or skidding at the lowest engine speeds.
Some tips for identifying faults when disassembling an engine. Remove the cylinder head and set the piston to top dead center. Rock it from side to side, if there is a slight play, you need to replace the piston rings. If there is a lot of looseness, check and match the piston to the cylinder.
Next the cylinder was removed. We take the piston and lift it to the top point with one hand. Then, using up and down movements, we check by touch the looseness of the piston. If there is a gap, you need to determine in what place. Replace faulty parts. These could be the piston pin with the connecting rod upper end, the connecting rod lower bearing, or the crankshaft main bearings.
Generator check the fastening of the wires. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft to check the condition of the key socket and key. There shouldn't be any backlash. Replace faulty parts.
Disassembling the clutch
Pay attention to the motor chain; if it is too sagging, replace it. Worn stars must be replaced. There should be no chips or other damage on the clutch discs.
The starting sector and the gear on the drum should not have chipped worn teeth. The connection between the gear and the drum must be clear without slipping
There should be no chips or other damage on the clutch discs. The starting sector and the gear on the drum should not have chipped worn teeth. The connection between the gear and the drum must be clear and without slipping.
This is roughly how you need to prepare an engine for a homemade all-terrain vehicle.

Prices for motorcycle Voskhod 3m
The price of a Voskhod 3m motorcycle is determined primarily depending on the technical condition, and not on the year of manufacture. Some of the earliest models are of rare value, while more recent motorcycles are purchased for riding.
This 1983 model is in working condition, but requires a large investment in order to bring it to a state where it can pass technical inspection. Therefore, the price for it is about 10,000 rubles.
A motorcycle produced in 1991 is sold for 12,000 rubles, it is technically sound, all instruments and mechanisms are in working order. This technique also requires investments, primarily related to appearance.
The representative of the Voskhod 3rd line, produced in 1993, looks quite decent. Almost all parts and mechanisms are original, externally the motorcycle is in good condition, the operation of the engine and suspension does not raise any questions. For such a sample the buyer will have to pay at least 20,000 rubles. Fortunately, a motorcycle requires virtually no investment.

Engine and possible breakdowns
The Voskhod 3m engine is a two-stroke, single-cylinder carburetor. The working volume of the cylinder is no more than 173.7 cm3. Piston diameter/stroke – 62/57.6mm. Engine power is 15 hp. A used engine in working condition can be purchased for 2000-4000 rubles.
The sore point of all Voskhod 3m is the rapid burnout of the bobbins, which have to be changed with constant use of the motorcycle, about 4 times a year. The chain tensioner also requires constant replacement - with aggressive driving it quickly breaks down. As for the engine, all the troubles that may arise with it are related to the piston. Installing new rings or completely replacing the piston solves most problems.
Engine tuning
The Voskhod 3m tuning engine which we will consider is a simple, 2-stroke engine with one cylinder. This engine is considered its own development, but has many similarities with motorcycles of Japanese origin. Experienced tuners assure that with the right approach, you can extract almost twice as much power from this engine as it comes from the factory. But you can’t do it with just one stroke; you need a careful approach and studying mountains of specialized literature. Let's look at what we can change to ride the Sunrise motorcycle faster:
- Cylinder-piston group. There is no point in starting other improvements without making changes to the CPG. To begin with, it is worth noting the fact that the factory safety margin of the parts is quite small, so all subsequent modifications will shorten the life of the engine. Let's start with the piston; you can leave it as a native one or select a foreign analogue in size. Next, you need to lighten its weight; for this, you need to grind off with a mill those parts that do not participate in the formation of the strength and operation of the piston. The connecting rod is also subject to lightening. At the cylinder itself, we change the geometry and size of the inlet, outlet and purge channels. This is necessary so that when the amount of air-fuel mixture increases, the engine can effectively burn it and remove gases.
- Carburetor. Alas, in order for the engine to go faster, you need to burn more gasoline, and in order to put more mixture into the cylinder, you need to purchase a more efficient carburetor. If we are talking about a significant increase in power, then the original carburetor is clearly not enough.
- Air filter. More gasoline requires more air for combustion. In order for the engine to “breathe” easily, it is better to replace the original filter element with a filter with minimal resistance.
- Reed valve. The design of a two-stroke engine is designed in such a way that during the compression stroke, part of the air-fuel mixture is emitted into the exhaust; to avoid this, a reed valve is installed. In addition to saving fuel, it also significantly increases traction at low speeds, which means the acceleration of the motorcycle improves.
Tuning
The motorcycle can be easily transformed, both technically and externally. Homemade methods of increasing engine power by boring the cylinder lead to rapid failure of the entire engine. Therefore, if you decide to tune your Voskhod, it is better to turn to professionals. Below are photos of tuned Voskhod motorcycles
Spare parts for Voskhod 3m are quite cheap and easily available. For reference, for example, the cost of a new pair of front shock absorbers costs 1,500 rubles, and a clutch kit costs only 220 rubles. On the used motorcycle market it is easy to find any spare parts at a price several times lower than new ones.
Advantages and disadvantages
Pros:
- Steering wheel lock in case of attempted theft.
- Increased engine thrust.
- Low fuel consumption.
- Low cost.
- Ease of repair and operation.
Minuses:
- Poor ergonomics.
- Vibrations and noises.
- Quite noisy.
- It is difficult to start a “worn out” engine.
The most significant drawback of this motorcycle is the almost complete absence of “live” models. More than 20 years have passed since the last release of 3M, so finding a sample in good technical condition will be problematic.
Comparison with analogues
The main competitors of Voskhod can be considered IZH-Planet 5, Dnepr and Minsk of the same years of production. In terms of speed and power, of course, the Dnepr also wins, but they are less maneuverable and quite heavy. The motorcycle is inferior in power to the Voskhod (only 2 hp), but Belarusian motorcycles are famous for their reliability and comfort. Therefore, Voskhod 3m cannot be sharply distinguished from a number of its competitors - for some it may seem like an ideal option, while others will prefer Planet or Minsky.
The Degtyarev plant has been producing the Voskhod 3m road motorcycle for a long time. This first model appeared in 1984. It has many advantages, for example, steering wheel locking.
A convenient motorcycle instrument panel, which is equipped with two warning lamps. And such a good motorcycle model deserves higher power. Therefore, it should be carried out at sunrise 3m.
Now the power is 15 and a half horsepower. Fuel consumption will be 4.2 liters versus 4.5. To increase power, you can replace the air filter. Oddly enough, power increases up to 8 percent when replacing.
This will reduce intake friction. Next, it is better to polish the jets and diffusers. The diameter of the diffuser is responsible for powering the engine. And then it should be replaced with a sports one.
For sunrise 3m it is advisable to work with the intake system. To do this, install a new carburetor. For greater dynamics, two carburetors will be required.
From the standard pipe you need to take the flanges for attaching to the cylinders, grind out the bushings from aluminum, and cut off the carburetor mounting flange from the inlet pipe. Then a second flange is taken from the old carburetor.
The feasibility of installing a magneto
It’s none of my business, of course, but I have an extremely negative attitude towards this kind of collective farm tuning.
Moreover, the magneto does not solve the problem with the reliability of the standard ignition system, but only replaces it with another problem. And this, in my opinion, is complete stupidity: to convert the engine to a magneto, so that later it will suffer even more... Yes, the dyno starter is not an ideal device. Which also needs to be constantly monitored and, if necessary, serviced. So what? Well, I cleaned the collector and breaker contacts at the beginning of the season and that’s it. Are there fewer problems with the magneto? More than a hundred times!
- Firstly, due to the fact that the rubber coupling constantly breaks, the ignition timing is lost, and this entails detonation, loss of power, overheating and increased fuel consumption.
- Secondly, after installing the magneto, they usually stop monitoring the dyno starter, deprive it of its battery, and it eventually dies completely... Accordingly, the on-board network of the scooter is deprived of its power source. And this means that “there is no light - there will be no cinema”...
- Thirdly, due to the fact that this whole alteration is a complete collective farm - the axes in which the magneto rotor and the dynostarter rotate diverge within significant limits. And this leads to the fact that the parts of these two devices begin to work with a large axial misalignment relative to each other, which is why the magneto’s output shaft of the rotor constantly breaks off and its support bearings fall apart.
- Fourthly, the magneto was not initially designed for long-term operation, much less to work with such a horse-like misalignment along the axes, which leads to an increased radial load on the rotor, which is not typical for a magneto.
- Fourthly, a magneto is very expensive - plus you need to buy a spacer and a coupling.
