Tuning "IZH Jupiter-5" with your own hands: interesting ideas and step-by-step description

The IZH Jupiter-5 motorcycle was produced by the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant from 1985 to 2008. In the USSR, it was a direct competitor to models from the famous Czech motorcycle manufacturer Java. Many of the cars produced are still on the roads of our country today. They are reliable and unpretentious, however, their technical characteristics and appearance no longer meet modern requirements. Tuning IZ Jupiter-5 helps correct the situation.

Silencing attachment

You can make such an attachment from the old muffler of the “fifth” or “fourth” “Jupiter” or the “fourth” - “third” “Planet”.
A cylindrical piece without partitions should be used to make the nozzle. The “flute” must be made of a heat-resistant material; the muffler connecting pipe from the Ural motorcycle may be suitable for this. Holes will need to be drilled in it, and the free space between the body and the tube should be filled with glass wool. The exhaust pipe can be left original. It should only be shortened a little and the connection should be welded rather than bolted.

The next step will be to improve the intake system. The minimum program would be to install a carburetor from the Planet-5 motorcycle, where the diffuser diameter is 32mm. To do this, it is necessary to cut the inlet windows in the pipe flange and cylinders a little. To significantly increase acceleration dynamics with simultaneous synchronous operation of the cylinders, two carburetors will be needed.

On foreign-made motorcycles, a carburetor for each cylinder has been installed for a long time and has become the norm. From the standard pipe you will need flanges with which to attach to the cylinders. In addition, it will be necessary to machine two aluminum bushings, and the carburetor mounting flange will need to be cut off from the Planeta inlet pipe.

The second flange can be taken from the old “Jupiter” carburetor. Welding of parts must be done with argon, after which the assembly must be adjusted until the gaps completely match. If small gaps have formed, they can be filled with epoxy or “cold welding”. When using epoxy glue, you can use aluminum filings or powder as a filler.

To ensure uniform traction up to acceleration of 100 km/h, use the K 65V from the Voskhod motorcycle. It is advisable to replace the main fuel jets, needles and nozzles; repair kits for these carburetors are relatively inexpensive on the market. The fuel level in the float chamber can be left the same. Having completed the carburetor, you can begin upgrading the air filter.

The original air filter installed on a motorcycle is not only unable to provide high-quality air purification, but also reduces engine power. In this case, you can buy an imported filter or use the upper part of the foam filter for the Voskhod motorcycle, which can cope with both installed carburetors, besides, it takes up little space and is very easy to maintain. Impregnation of foam rubber should be done with special oil for air filters. Getting such oil will not be difficult.

One of the most important jobs remains - finishing the cylinders and piston group. The engine from Jupiter-5 is more mature, so there will be much less fuss with it. In the figure, the red lines refer to the development of the modified “Sport” cylinders, the black lines show the standard “Classic” version. An increase in engine power can be achieved by trimming the upper edge of the exhaust window by 1.5-2mm.

To increase the power of the Yu-5 engine by increasing the speed, trim the upper edge of the exhaust window by 1.5-2 mm. A prerequisite is the same weight of the pistons, and the windows must coincide with the purge windows in the cylinders and in no case overlap them. The edges of the piston rings will need to be chamfered.

It will be necessary to lighten the piston pins by cutting them into a cone at the end. It is also necessary to chamfer the end of the fingers. The “tails” of the locking pins will need to be bitten off so that they are not cut off by the piston pin.

For further refinement, you will need to find a crankshaft that has a needle bearing in the upper part. Such a shaft can be found on the “liquid” Jupiter. This shaft is interchangeable with other models. To ensure better lubrication of the bearing, it will be necessary to drill two holes in the head, the diameter of which should be in the range of 3-3.5 mm, as is done on the Planet. As practice shows, standard aluminum separators installed at the factory are not reliable.

The cylinder heads will need to be tightened by cutting their ends on a lathe. The volume of the combustion chamber can be determined by the spill method; it should be within 19 cm3. It is not recommended to increase the compression ratio further, since the cylinder heads may lose rigidity. After all the modifications made, you will have to drive the AI-92. At the end, you will need to adjust the ignition angle and install new Brisk OT “Jawa” or PAL spark plugs.

I finally sat down to write the main post, which is why I registered on this site. We will talk about fine-tuning, boosting and improving the characteristics of the IZ Jupiter5 engine.

I rode on stock for a couple of years and then came this feeling that probably visited every motorcyclist: “I’m not enough...” 350cc but 24hp is negligible, and I didn’t want to sell the first motorcycle that changed my whole life. Here it was decided to increase the power of the 25-year-old old man. I want to warn you right away that the post was not created for bragging, they say that my Jup is all like this, he is ruining everything... First of all, I will highlight the problems that arise when forcing, I will show how I solved them, what was difficult for me and who helped me with what. I'm not a 2T ICE guru, I'm just learning, so there will be a lot of criticism. Oh yes, most importantly, those who will write why throw so much money and time into IZH, it will remain IZH. Of course, he will remain an IZh, only one that pleases passers-by and makes them turn around when he breaks away from a traffic light. For some reason, most people are inclined to ride everything ready-made and the only modifications that come to mind are the Puig windshield and the Akrapovic pipe. I don't judge such people, but don't judge me either. If I do something, it means I live, not exist, and the completion of this project can last a long time, the main thing is pleasure! This is what it looked like before finishing. Everything was stock, only consumables were changed.

It all started with a suggestion from a friend. I was offered adapters for Sova LC, houses, a “PROTOLAB” intake resonator and 2 Jikov carburetors. Of course, I couldn’t resist and bought it.

I didn’t want to experiment with the stock engine, because I wanted to be able to return everything back, and with a boost it’s almost impossible. It was decided to get a used IZH Jupiter5 motor from old stocks.

About the motor. The crankcase is in good condition, the IZH Jupiter3 shafts with NGSh 29 on bushings without a shaft, the Yu3 USSR gearbox is new, the CPG with Almot pistons after running in (it’s even very good that I didn’t install a new piston because when setting up 2 carbs it’s easy to screw up the pots with a lean mixture ), narrow basket, Atlant disks, YAP bearings, Erics seals. In a word, the most expensive parts of the engine were the consumables, the rest for testing were ordinary spare parts. Here's what someone might need: Atlant discs are of excellent quality, the clutch on these discs is soft, easy to adjust, the discs do not fall out or break off.

Erics seals:

SKF bearings:

The cylinders remained stock, the purge was not touched, they were just painted with black heat-resistant paint (I immediately show an excerpt from Grigoriev’s book regarding the fact that black cylinders will overheat).

Very important! When installing reed valves, you need to increase the intake phase, but I made it constant as in the photo. (photo is not mine, I’ll find my pistons and remove them, but the holes are identical)

By the way, you can already see everything in the engine through the intake windows.

The heads were set back slightly to raise the compression ratio.

Now the motor is assembled and is expected to be installed on the frame.

Here is the engine on the frame, this is where the fun begins.

The main difficulty in installing 2 carburetors, as for me, is adjustment. And not just that it would drive, but that it would work smoothly, without failures and with brown soot on the spark plugs - This is what I call a tuned power system! Fortunately, Pavel Prikhodko, the creator of Protolab, wrote a detailed article on adjusting carburetors, for which many thanks to him. Here it is: Adjusting the carburetors I installed the carburetors from Jicov, drilled the jets myself using a very useful table that I think someone will need.

Regarding filters, I used Minsk paper filters and Ural motorcycle pipes. I recommend NGK BP6HS spark plugs; their heat rating is equal to that recommended by the manufacturer of the IZH engine, and besides, spark plugs are the first indicator and indicator of the quality of the mixture. If the candle is gray or white the mixture is poor, if it is black it is rich, if it is brown everything is fine!

The setup was painfully long, so if anyone encounters this, be patient ;)

After a while, I was able to adjust the carburetors, without failures with the correct operation of the engine.

By the way, I immediately ordered resonators for my engine at 5500 rpm from Anatoly Tkachenko.

After adjusting the carburetors, the motorcycle ran like new. The dynamics have improved, I was already happy BUT. 1 Problem: I drove a KSZ (contact ignition system) for 3 years, I had no problems, since I always looked after the engine and the bearings are always in excellent condition. But after installing 2 carbs and resonators, I began to turn the engine over 5000 and the gearboxes at these speeds began to work incorrectly, namely, a spark was missed, despite their excellent condition.

This was all to be expected, so after a couple of days I already installed the BSZ with FUOZ (AZ and cut-off 4000 rpm) + bought an electronic tachometer. For information about the place of purchase, write in PM.

I drove away for about a week to celebrate. I revved the engine above 5000 on the light side.

And then a new problem appeared. 2 Problem: Since my valve is made in China, there were some unpleasant moments. On Soviet ones, the plastic is stronger and the valves do not leak. And even though I made holes for unloading the petals as in the photo below (photo not mine), it didn’t really help. Over time, the petals began to fit poorly and as a result the motor did not work correctly. There are 3 ways to solve the problem: 1. Look for the USSR LK, but in Ukraine this is almost impossible. 2. There is a huge choice of installing LC on foreign cars, Honda NSR, Yamaha RD and so on. BUT here the price of the valves is steep and the adapters need to be completely remade. 3.Make the LC according to the size of the owl, but not from plastic, but from another more durable material. Personally, I decided to try casting a housing for the LC from aluminum. A good person helped me with this, how to find him, write in PM This is what they look like.

The LC without limiters has been driven on my engine for a year now and nothing has broken off, the petals always fit snugly, the body does not lead.

Again, everything is assembled, adjusted, and the rides begin again.

The bike started running completely differently and I liked it, but I didn't like the Jicov carburetors for some reasons. They are not convenient to use, very capricious when adjusting, the fastening on the manifolds is weak. In general, I decided to try out the k68D Pekar.

Immediately the result lived up to expectations in that it responded to tuning more easily than Java carburetors. Since I tried the GTZ 260 to begin with, it overflowed and it didn’t really drive. I screwed in a GTZ 190 from a Ural motorcycle. The engine obviously didn’t have enough of the poor mixture. I thought about screwing in 200 from the Sova motorcycle, but it’s hard to find them since the Soviet ones are no longer available anywhere, and in new-made repair kits on the jets only the numbers are filled in correctly, but in real life the hole does not match the designation for flow capacity. For example, I bought a 200 gtzh for an owl, and when they were spilled, it turned out to be 270. I decided to drill 190 with a 1.1 drill so that it would be approximately 225 gtzh. In the end, everything worked out and it didn’t turn out bad! The spark plugs are barely brown and the engine starts to run confidently!

The engine worked well, but it took better power from the bottom and I decided to somehow do this on my K68D. How to improve the bottom on the K68D First of all, I decided to carefully sharpen the needles, this procedure requires nerves and precision, since every time I try to put it back, it takes a lot of time to disassemble. INFO about Carburetors I rummaged around on the Internet and saw such a device as the Power Wing PHOTO I read articles, searched in books about it, everything I found was these details.

What changes have occurred: 1. After installing PW, the carburetor settings were completely lost. 2. After adjusting the carburetors, I noticed that I began to keep the speed lower, it was more stable at low speeds, and it started faster from a standstill. They also installed the same ones on the stock Jupiter + no -. Therefore, I advise, after all, it’s not for nothing that the Powerwing price is $120.

Over time, the spark plugs began to turn white and I decided to make jets of greater capacity. But I couldn’t find such a drill and a very good man, an excellent master of 2t internal combustion engines, Anatoly Lukyanenko, helped me. Anatoly made me custom 2 jets 240. Which are still on my carburetors. I’m adjusting the carburetors on my own and at the same time helping my nephew with his Honda)

I’ll also tell you about such an improvement as the collapsing star from the Planet to Jupiter.

Many people have done it and tried, but I’ll just tell you how it really is and my impressions. I’ll take most of the photos from my friend Drobot Vovchik, he did the same thing and still has photos. So I got to the point that 4 speeds are not enough for me even with a 21 tooth sprocket. A 5-speed gearbox on the IZH is not an option, but I somehow wanted to increase the gear ratio. Therefore, I decided to do this using the colval star IZH PLANET. On Jupiter this star has 21 teeth, on the planet it has 24. In this way I decided to increase the speed. Unfortunately, the stars are not identical, so there are some changes: 1.

The star is set back by 4mm without changing the taper! The work is done by a turner! The end of the seat must be cut off by 4mm, otherwise it will rest against the bearing and will not sit properly on the shaft! 2. A huge problem is the size of the chain! The native one is not enough, but you need to add 1.5 links. Not 2 links is a lot, and not 1 is not enough! There is no point in picking up a chain from a Muscovite either! Here in the photo you can clearly see how my friend’s method can cope with the problem.

As a result, the chain does not sag and the basket rotates freely.

Now let's move on to reality. I rode this chainring for 1 day because I was afraid for the chain design. The speeds really became longer; in the terrain I turned on speed 3 from time to time, but never reached 4 at all. On highway 4 it became smoother and longer. In general, it was a matter of taste. For those who often travel long distances and not through the mountains but on a flat road, this option is excellent. But I’m used to an aggressive driving style, I rev the engine to the limit and therefore, as it turns out, I don’t particularly need such a star.

In fact, in this configuration, I drove the whole season until winter until the CPG was completely worn out and the spruce compression meter was dialing the number 6.

I also drove 100 km. From home everything was fine, the motorcycle did not let me down, but only made me happy every time I opened the gas.

And finally, the most important thing, the conclusions and results that I came to. 1. Dynamics have improved on all ranges. 2. Traction from the bottom significantly improved the acceleration and start, and the motorcycle rode confidently up any hill, even with a passenger and a star at 21. 3. Acceleration improved due to 2 carburetors, I didn’t measure how much but the Tazy 1.6 V 16 from the start to a speed of 100 km. at one o'clock I break. 4. In the operating range of the resonators, a second wind characteristic of 2t appeared. Well, the sound, of course, makes people turn around in my wake) 5. Because of the BSZ, the motor runs softer and is easier to tune. In general, it takes a long time to describe everything, it’s easier to just try it and everything will become clear. In a word, I am satisfied with my work and I think it was not in vain that I spent a lot of time in the garage.

This + is now about -. 1. With this engine, the stock brakes seem very weak. (It’s not for nothing that great boosters say that tuning and boosting should start with the brakes)! 2. The stock suspension of the IZh is already not very good, but with this engine it’s generally the same. 3. The motor has become more powerful, and therefore less durable, so I want to strengthen some components in the motor. 4. Due to the flywheel up to 3kg. It seems like the revs are getting low. I think I can solve all these disadvantages over the winter and assemble a new motor.

Answers to frequently asked questions. 1. How much does he eat? -Of course, half of the schoolchildren have IZH 170 and Java 180, but I will still answer. According to the speedometer, everything is 160, but the GPS shows 135-140, next season I will try to prove this by attaching a video. 2.How much to 100? -I haven’t measured it, but it’s faster than the same Priora! 3. How much money did you invest? - I don’t tell anyone. 4.Is it difficult to adjust carburetors? -YES 5. How much does it eat (this is probably the most constant question) - Consumption is 6-7.5 liters per 100, everything depends sooo much on driving style! 6.Java is vomiting now? — Java and stock IL can outperform since I don’t see any significant differences in the engine, power and other indicators between these 2 motorcycles. That's all. This motor has already been disassembled and a completely new motor has been assembled with the jambs and disadvantages that were removed before. More on this in the next post.

Improved technical characteristics

  • Engine

The Planet-5 engine is convenient for processing. Of course, owners always want to increase power. To do this, it is worth repressing the crankshaft, replacing the original bearings with bearings from the Java secondary shaft.

When disassembling, it is worth silvering the upper ring and the lower separator. After tuning the engine, its service life is reduced. So if you use the motorcycle for normal speed riding, you should not change anything in the engine, as this will greatly reduce the life of the tires

and rear clutch.

Cylinder

To increase the volume of the cylinder, cut off its upper part and bore the liner to 76 mm. After pumping the engine, the Planet can accelerate to 160 km/h.

Clutch

The factory clutch of the IZH Planet-5 copes well with normal loads. If you drive a lot and drive aggressively, you should think about replacing the clutch. Under increased load, the disks quickly fail, so it is worth replacing one of them with a thicker metal one. This will lead to a stronger compression of the springs, in which there will be no slipping and the clutch will be more difficult to squeeze.

Supercharging

Advanced mechanics can change the boost system. When tuning the IZH Planet motorcycle, do not forget to replace the air filter with a foreign one. High-quality air purification will increase the power of your “iron horse” and prevent the engine from overheating.

Piston

Lubricating the piston will increase friction between the side wall and the cylinder bore.

Thus, after spending some time and money on tuning the IZH Planet-5 motorcycle, you will get an excellent “iron friend”. "Planet" initially has good technical characteristics - excellent traction, high power, resistance to any type of road.

Add to this an affordable price, ease of maintenance and availability of the necessary parts, plus your skills and imagination - and you will get a motorcycle that will serve you faithfully in Russian off-road conditions for many years.

In addition to its decent appearance, Izh Planet 5 has excellent technical characteristics. The motorcycle is equipped with a single-cylinder two-stroke engine with a power of 22 hp. With. The fuel consumption and processing system requires a modest 5 liters. gasoline with stable driving at a speed of 90 km/h. In addition, this model of domestic motorcycle was one of the first to receive an air cooling system, which increases traction at low speeds.

The maximum speed of the motorcycle is 120 km/h. The unit performs well when driving off-road and does not require large expenses for maintenance. All this is the reason for the wild popularity of Izh Planet 5 from 1987 to the present day. After all, not every one of us can buy an expensive Harley Davidson. But many people are capable of paying 5–6 thousand rubles for a domestic motorcycle. In addition, the Izhevsk Machine Plant model is much easier to tune with your own hands, which cannot be said about the expensive American and Japanese “monsters”.

Improved ride quality

The icing on the cake, and in our case the final touch of tuning, is the improvement in driving performance. Some of the tuners approached this issue earlier when they sawed the frame of their motorcycle or raised the tail of a future crossover. For the rest, first of all, you should get rid of your original tires. Among its advantages, only wear resistance can be noted, for which you pay with your safety. It is both universal and useless. The lugs are practically useless; if they get into a mess, under normal conditions on the highway it is noisy, but relatively holds the road, turning into a killer on a wet highway.

Therefore, without hesitation, we throw it away and purchase road, cross or all-purpose tires, based on your requirements. The second point is the suspension. If everything is generally clear with the rear shock absorbers, they are extremely reliable and, in addition, have stiffness settings, then the front fork does not leak only for those who have chosen a different brand. There are two ways to get out of this situation. The first is to add thicker oil. The second is to carry out a complete overhaul of the feathers and replace all parts. Both options do not last long, so the most demanding owners simply change the fork to an imported one, while the rest endure all the shortcomings of their iron horse.

Engine tuning

The two-cylinder two-stroke engine with a working volume of 347.6 cubic meters was installed on the motorcycle. see most often has air cooling. The number of models released in recent years of production that used liquid cooling is negligible. The power that the engine develops is 24 hp. With. – can be increased by making some simple modifications:

  • Increase the compression ratio by removing about 1.5 mm from the adjacent plane of the block head. But this will require switching to fuel with an octane rating of AI-95 and making changes to the design of the crank mechanism. First of all, replacing the crankshaft bearings. You will also have to select spark plugs with a different heat rating.
  • Replacing crankshaft bearings. There is an opinion that only high-quality imported bearings can cope with increased loads. In fact, domestic developers have installed bearings with a large margin of safety. If you manage to purchase high-quality Russian analogues, they will do the job perfectly. Trying to change the size of the crankshaft journals is simply harmful. The thickness of their hardening layer is small and when more than 1 mm is removed from the surface of the journal, the service life of the part will sharply decrease.
  • Replacement or modification of pistons. The stock parts aren't that bad. Don't rush to look for a replacement for them. To increase power, it will be enough to lighten the pistons by removing casting flash and excess material from them. Parts should be carefully adjusted according to weight. It is desirable that the difference does not exceed hundredths of a gram. Such simple engine tuning will be more effective than installing a zero-resistance air filter or a direct-flow muffler. Although it is, of course, possible to install forward flow on IZ Jupiter-5.
  • Installing another carburetor. If possible, it's worth shelling out for a good Mikuni carburetor. Don't go for a large diffuser size. The standard diameter of 32 mm will be quite sufficient. But it’s definitely worth removing the protrusions on the intake and exhaust manifolds and polishing the internal channels of these parts. This will not only provide an increase in power, but will also help reduce fuel consumption below five liters.
  • Replacement of the ignition system. Installing BSZ on IZ Jupiter-5 only makes sense if you intend to use imported components. Most likely, the quality of domestic components will reduce all the advantages of the contactless ignition system to zero and the rework will not give the desired result.

Do not forget that increased power will improve the acceleration dynamics of the motorcycle, but will not provide a significant increase in speed. To increase speed, you will have to change the transmission gear ratios, selecting different sprockets for the gearbox and rear wheel.

You need to redo it wisely

You can find a lot of materials on this topic on the Internet. But they should be treated with great caution. Some recommendations openly contradict common sense; the result of other alterations may be unpredictable. Let's try to help with advice to those who decided to do the tuning of Jupiter 5 with their own hands.

There are several directions for making changes to the design of the popular model:

  • Correction of the appearance of the motorcycle.
  • Modification or alteration of the suspension.
  • Engine tuning.

Let's consider each of them separately.

Motorcycle "Planet-5"

The Planet-5 motorcycle, production of which began in 1985 and was completed in 2008, is remarkably amenable to tuning. More often they carry out tuning of the exterior, some units or main components. To make the fifth “Planet” more playful and passable (in fact, convert the IZH “Planet-5” into a cross-country motorcycle), they remove excess from the frame in order to reduce the 180-kilogram weight of the motorcycle when it is loaded. Then, for better ride, long-stroke shock absorbers are installed on the rear wheel and the front fork is replaced. You can rearrange it from a Java motorcycle with increased speed. Naturally, the wings are also changed.

There are no major changes to the engine. To increase the service life of the crankshaft, replace the original bearings from the secondary shaft with “Java” ones. The quality and increased service life compensate for the high cost of these bearings.

For the IZH Planet-5 motorcycle, engine tuning also means increasing the cylinder volume. To do this, the top is cut off and the sleeve is bored to 76 millimeters. A piston from Planet-Sport will fit freely under this size. After these modifications, the prototype of the modernized Planet 5 will reach a speed of up to 160 kilometers instead of its 120 kilometers per hour. By the way, on the test bench the engine developed a power of 42 hp. at 5950 rpm. But with any boost of the engine, its resource is reduced. Such modifications should not be made on a motorcycle intended for everyday normal riding.

When boosting the engine, the standard rear tires, clutch and chain may not last long. We need to think about their modernization.

Tuned spare parts for IZH motorcycles

The catalog contains a huge selection of tuned spare parts intended for the IZH Planet and IZH Jupiter motorcycles. There are fairings, trims, engine protection elements, brackets and much more. Everyone will be able to choose exactly the part that will decorate their vehicle. Motorcycle tuning is a creative matter, and different motorcyclists’ concepts of beauty can vary greatly. Our range is designed for people with the widest tastes. The products are easy to install, you can do the job without involving specialists. A small set of tools that every motorcycle owner has in their garage is enough.

Cafe Racer

The style largely repeats the previous one, because it consists of giving the motorcycle an appearance similar to the British models of the 60-70s. A distinctive feature of such motorcycles is the special shape of the seat and tail. For our modification model, we will have to work on the rear part and replace the tank with a more streamlined one. You will also have to change a number of details in general, these are:

  • round mirrors;
  • one round device instead of a panel;
  • monochrome, dim color of the main elements;
  • no stickers;
  • an abundance of chrome parts (switch feet, turn signals, possibly fenders).

In what cases is ignition adjustment necessary?

During the operation of the vehicle, the owner faces many problems. The most serious failure is related to the engine. In order to spend significant funds on major repairs, it is necessary to monitor the technical condition of the motorcycle and carry out preventive work, including adjusting the valves and valves (video author - Hana Rulyu).

If you do not monitor the SZ, then the motorcycle engine may not reveal its full potential and will not work at full capacity. This can lead to a reduction in its service life. An ignition adjustment is necessary if the engine is running poorly, the muffler or carburetor is firing. True, before setting up the SZ, you should make sure that the cause of the malfunction is in it.

It happens that the flywheel bolt, which connects the two halves of the crankshaft, comes loose, begins to play and does not work well. Sometimes he even cuts the key.

Setting up the SZ may be necessary after repairing the ignition switch Izh Jupiter 5. The installation and connection itself are carried out according to the diagram.

Refinement and modification of suspension

The original suspension of the IZH Jupiter-5 motorcycle is reliable and has good maintainability. It is not difficult to restore it, but better results can be obtained by making some changes to the design.

Installation of adjustable gas shock absorbers. Today on sale it is not difficult to find gas shock absorbers with suitable parameters that can be used in the design of the rear suspension for tuning IZ Jupiter-5. Ideally, you can improve ride comfort and improve the stability of the car on the highway.

Replacing the front fork. This is also possible, but most likely will require reworking its fastening.

Installing another handlebar is not prohibited if it does not worsen the ergonomics of the rider's seat.

How I decided to remove paint

It was necessary to have some kind of more or less durable grinder with an attachment made of Scotch Brite of suitable grain size, with Velcro on a cup with a rubber base. The surface would immediately be obtained without unnecessary scratches (although traces of metal molding and roughly cleaned welds previously hidden under paint would be visible).

Here, for example, are traces of metal molding:

Plus, the welds would have to be cleaned with a brush made of thin steel wires - also an angle grinder or a light high-speed reversible drill with such an attachment.

But instead of a so-so drill (and this is my drill in the photo and screws screws) with the money I had, I bought a semi-professional Skil grinder with a flexible shaft for 1390 rubles (790 rubles in the configuration without a flexible shaft; the flexible shaft resembles a speedometer cable in braid), I didn’t really use a single attachment from it. I asked him to sharpen an M6 bolt for a 3.2 mm collet, sawed it at the end and put small strips of sandpaper there.

This device made it possible to remove paint from the wheel rim without disassembling the wheel (without separating the rim and the wheel hub).

By the way, never clamp Chinese 3.0 mm bits with such a collet - they will turn and you will have to buy a whole set of collets (they are for different drills) in a radio parts store, which costs 200 rubles. Probably, the collet is 3.00 mm and not 3.20 mm and you need to clamp such attachments.

Included with the grinder was a pencil-shaped attachment made of diamond-coated steel. She was able to trim welds and draw on glass jars (the part with the largest diameter). These are sold in separate sets, but it’s still a shame to trim the metal with them.

You have to add machine oil to the flexible shaft of the grinder - in the place where it connects to the grinder, it then leaks out and ends up everywhere - on the floor, mask, face and clothes. It is better not to set the speed above positions 3, 4 or 5 during different operations set by the speed controller (there are 6 positions in total), since the motor in it starts to heat up too quickly at high speeds, the smell of insulation appears and you feel sorry for the sander.

Almost all the paint and rust was removed from the motorcycle with this sander. A grinder in addition to a grinder like this would be much faster, perhaps two or three days for all the parts including the frame. Some parts were cleaned by hand. It’s more pleasant to work by hand; there’s no rush like with a power tool. I would have done exactly this without a sander.

The best thing is a durable air compressor with sufficient liters per minute and air pressure capacity, and a few tools to go with it (a durable straight sander with easily replaceable bearings and a small angle sander with a rubber backing for Velcro). The rotation of the attachments in such tools simply stops and they do not get knocked out of your hands like a power tool - which often has a kilowatt of power to withstand possible overheating from prolonged use.

Engine tuning Izh Jupiter 5

Many Jupiter owners are not satisfied with the power of their motorcycle. In this part of the article we will look at Jupiter 5 engine tuning. In fact, the Izha engine has great potential for increasing power. First, make sure that the engine is in more or less normal condition, the cylinder fins are intact, and the bearing seats in the crankcase are not broken. First of all, tuning of this model is to eliminate the “jambs” from the poor quality of production of parts of the serial industry of past years, since at that time they tried to reduce the cost of production as much as possible. Don't forget to clean the engine before disassembling. Having disassembled the engine, we advise you to replace all the bearings with European or Japanese analogues, because after tuning the Izh motorcycle, the speed will increase and the loads will increase. If the gaps between the pistons and the cylinder do not meet the standard, you will need to bore to the nearest repair size. Then we proceed to processing the purge channels. As a rule, these are steps at the joints between the bottom of the cylinder and the surface of the crankcase.

They create resistance and unnecessary swirl of the fuel mixture, which reduces the flow rate and prevents you from getting maximum power from the engine. This can be done using cutters and a drill.

After this, you need to smooth out any remaining unevenness with sandpaper. Also use sandpaper to sand the inlet and outlet channels in the cylinders, smoothing out any unevenness from the casting. Moreover, it is enough to process the inlet channel to a smooth rough surface, and the exhaust channel to the smoothest possible state for better movement of exhaust gases and to prevent carbon deposits. The bottom and surface of the pistons must similarly be polished to a shine. To increase the compression ratio, Jupiter cylinder heads need to be trimmed by 1.5-2mm to reduce the combustion chambers. This is done on a lathe, the heads are mounted in the chuck using mandrels

It is important to ensure the same surface treatment - the volume of both combustion chambers must be strictly the same. Increasing the compression ratio will entail a transition to 95th gasoline, and the ignition is set a few degrees earlier

It is highly recommended to replace the old contact ignition with an electronic one with automatic advance. It will allow you to achieve high speeds and spark at the right time. If desired, you can assemble the new ignition yourself. The crankshaft also needs to be modified. The standard crankshaft is too heavy and is designed to be ridden with a sidecar and a loaded motorcycle. You will have to unpress it, and grind the outer diameter of the cheeks to 125 mm in diameter, then polish the connecting rods to a mirror surface. The modified crankshaft is subject to assembly and mandatory balancing. This tuning of Izh Jupiter 5 will allow it to accelerate to 160 km/h.

Electrical equipment IZH Planet 5

The motorcycle uses 12-volt electrical equipment. The electrical wiring of the IZH Planet 5 motorcycle is single-wire, the role of the negative wire is performed by a metal frame.

Among the main components are:

  1. Power supplies;
  2. Ignition system;
  3. Headlight;
  4. Side lighting and turns.

Generator

The motorcycle is equipped with a three-phase alternating current generator with an electromagnetic excitation circuit.

The principle of its operation is as follows:

  1. Electric current from the windings located on the stator is supplied to the rectifier;
  2. It converts it to direct current;
  3. And supplies it to consumers through the ignition switch.

The instructions provided include the following items:

  1. Voltage regulator with rectifier BPV-14-10;
  2. Generator rotor;
  3. Generator stator with windings;
  4. Current collector brushes;
  5. Ignition system cam (battery);
  6. Ignition system contact unit

Headlight

Unlike European countries, where there is a requirement that motorcycles with permanent magnet generators must be equipped with a battery - since a motorcycle with a non-working engine must have side lights - there are no such restrictions in Russia (see also about the Ural motorcycle wiring diagram).

The head light circuit includes:

  1. headlight lamp (35W);
  2. blue indicator lamp (2W);
  3. headlight parking light (4W);
  4. rear brake light lamp (15W).

Control devices

The following control devices are installed on the motorcycle:

  1. speedometer with daily and total mileage counters;
  2. tachometer with indicator lamps for direction indicators and headlights;
  3. engine temperature indicator;
  4. voltmeter.

Correction of motorcycle appearance

Changing your appearance can happen in different ways. Among the most common:

  • Fairing installation.
  • Replacing the fuel tank.
  • Seat modification.
  • Motorcycle painting.

Fairing installation. This is the first thing that many lovers of modifying the appearance of motorcycles undertake. Although it is possible to cope with such a task, it should be recognized that the development of such components is a complex task that requires specific skills. The enterprises employ entire groups of specialists engaged in the design of fairings.

A person who does not have specific skills, despite all his talents, will most likely receive a result of dubious quality. The surface of the fairing will be uneven, which is clearly visible in the 5 photos posted online illustrating Jupiter tuning. The aerodynamics of the motorcycle may not improve, but worsen. Take all this into account before you decide to start making and installing a fairing.

Replacing the fuel tank is a completely justified decision. But you shouldn’t try to make a complex part yourself. This is not an easy task even for enterprises with special technological equipment. It’s smarter and easier to choose a ready-made fuel tank from some other motorcycle model.

Seat modification. You can try to make a change to the standard structure by upholstering it with a new material like leather or a good substitute, and installing a new filler. But the original seat has a significant mass. To reduce the weight of the motorcycle, it makes sense, as in the case of the fuel tank, to select a part from other equipment.

Painting IZ Jupiter-5 is a good thing. Here you can let your imagination run wild. But the best results can be achieved if you know the laws of color combinations or consult with a professional designer. Otherwise, instead of a stylish combination of contrasting colors, you can end up with an eye-catching color scheme.

If you are interested in long-lasting paintwork, first apply a layer of high-quality primer and refuse to use nitro paint, preferring alkyd or polyurethane enamels.

External tuning Izh Jupiter 5

In most cases, tuning primarily affects the appearance of the motorcycle. They are trying to make it similar to a cross-country version, “comb it” like a high-speed sports bike, or make it into an imposing chopper. It depends on the personal preferences of the tuning maker what changes to what.

The greatest effect in external transformation can be achieved by installing new fairings. There are two options: purchase a ready-made motorcycle from a different model and try to install it by changing the mounts, or order an absolutely unique one according to individual taste. The second option, as a rule, costs a little more.

In addition, when tuning the Izh Jupiter 5 motorcycle, they resort to chrome plating. Almost all metal parts that have the ability to shine fall under it. Typically this includes the exhaust pipe, engine block, fork, wheel rims and much more.

Engine tuning

Upgrading a power unit usually means increasing power. This issue can be solved in a simple way:

  • cylinder boring;
  • correct installation of valve timing.

The first method is outrageously simple, but not in the case of the fifth Jupiter. The fact is that the cylinder system simply will not survive serious boring due to its fragility. And considering that the “exhaust” from such a modernization practically does not improve power, it can be immediately discarded.

The second method is more practical and effective. Thanks to the skilled boring of the gas-passing cylinder windows, the motorcycle noticeably increases power.

If you want to make a real rocket out of your Izh, you can additionally install a carburetor on each cylinder and balance them correctly. This will optimize the fuel supply and increase the speed characteristics of the motorcycle. The installation of contactless ignition will also have a positive effect on the bike.

Not tuning, but restoration

However, modernization is not the only way for owners of the popular model. After all, the age of many motorcycles has already exceeded two decades, which means that they can already be classified as rare. Restoring IZ Jupiter-5, restoring it and bringing it to its original state is also quite justified.

A legendary motorcycle that looks like it just rolled off the assembly line yesterday will attract no less attention than the tuned version. It’s just that how to properly restore equipment by performing qualified repairs often turns out to be much more difficult than remodeling it to your taste.
