In regions with heavy snowfall in winter, using two-wheeled vehicles is not advisable. But you don’t always need a car. In such cases, a snowmobile comes to the rescue, but this type of transport is expensive. If you wish, you can make a snowmobile with your own hands, and there are many ways to do this.
How to make a snowmobile from a motorcycle with your own hands?
A snowmobile is a necessary transport that is used in the winter season or in areas where regular transport cannot travel. It serves as an indispensable assistant in many professions. For example, rescuers, surveyors, foresters and even border guards use a snowmobile while working. Of course, professional, expensive models are used here. If you live or work in the northern part of the planet, where you cannot do without special transport, and purchasing a new one is very expensive, you have to look for other ways. You can find a craftsman who will help you create an all-terrain vehicle-snowmobile from what you have. If there are no such specialists, then you can buy a snowmobile at the flea market for little money. Or maybe you yourself have an old motorcycle somewhere in a barn, the engine of which is still quite functional. Everything will come in handy - the motor and other remaining parts.
Features of creating a snowmobile from ?Izha?
Snowmobile from ?Izha? You can do it yourself in several ways. The first is a wheeled ski option. At its core, the design does not change, only the wheels are removed. Instead of the front one, a ski made from a pipe is installed. It is attached to the axle shaft to the front fork.
For the rear of the future snowmobile based on the Izha? a tracked module is manufactured, which will be attached in place of the wheel. In addition to the frame, it will include a rear axle from a UAZ vehicle, the driven gear of which must be replaced with a rear sprocket.
Snowmobile from ?Izha? must have a chain intermediate shaft. The wheeled version uses cameras from PTS-2-4. Discs are made by welding rods and attaching wheels using belts. A snowmobile, which you can make with your own hands on the Izha base, is capable of speeds of up to 60 km/h.
Snowmobiles based on "Minsk"
Let's start with the smallest representative of the domestic motorcycle industry - the Minsk motorcycle. Although it is equipped with a 125 cc engine, it is quite capable of acting as a snowmobile, and craftsmen “manage” to make two types of snowmobiles out of it.
The first type is wheel-ski. Structurally, nothing much changes in the motorcycle, but the wheels are removed from it. Instead of the front wheel, a wide ski is installed.
Moreover, it is done very simply - take a pipe as a stand, and attach the ski to the front fork using a fastening element and the wheel axle shaft. At the bottom, a wide metal strip with a wrapped limber is attached to the rack on a hinge.
Regarding the rear of the snowmobile, it is somewhat more complicated here . A module is made that is mounted in place of the rear wheel.
In addition to the frame, the design of the module includes a rear axle from UAZ, but slightly modified. The driven gear of the bridge is replaced with the rear sprocket of the IZH motorcycle. The drive to the bridge is carried out through an intermediate shaft, but it still remains a chain drive.
Tubes from the PTS-2-4 trailer are used as wheels, but for reliability, the sidewalls of the tube are reinforced with tire sidewalls. To make it lighter, the discs are made of welded rods, and the camera is secured to them using belts.
A snowmobile based on Minsk is capable of reaching speeds of up to 45 km/h.
The second type of snowmobile from “Minsk” is tracked. Moreover, in front, a ski is again used, attached to the fork. A module is also installed at the rear, but consisting of a frame and two shafts attached to it.
The front shaft is equipped with sprockets. Two large sprockets drive the track, and a small sprocket drives the shaft. The rear shaft is equipped with rollers. A caterpillar made of V-belts and plastic strips is stretched between these shafts.
The drive is carried out via an intermediate shaft. The tracked version of the Minsk can already accelerate to 50 km/h. And these are just two of many types.
Engineers and designers did a good job on the Izh Junker motorcycle, one of the most beautiful models of domestic production.
The Jawa 350 motorcycle was quite popular among the people, let's take a look at its technical characteristics.
Steering
Assembling an ATV with your own hands is not an easy task. And, perhaps, the most difficult thing is to make the steering. To do this, first weld the frame of the front part of the ATV. Then you will need steering knuckles from a car, for example from a Niva, but any others will do. After which you need to build suspension arms
Pay special attention to the design of the mounting of the levers, since when they are connected to the frame, large loads arise, so additional stiffening ribs will not be superfluous. Levers are usually bolted through silent blocks
This is a rubber-metal joint that is an essential link in the suspension. It dampens wheel vibrations, preventing vibration from being transmitted to the frame. Levers can be made according to these drawings.

We bring to your attention a selection of do-it-yourself snowmobile photos from domestic motorcycles. But it turns out that such “crafts” can be made not only from old motorcycles, but also cars and bicycles.
Telescopic suspension
Perhaps this is one of the most common and simplest types of suspension based on the principle of operation. Most often, this suspension is used on snowmobiles of the “utilitarian” class. The design of the telescopic fork consists of a spring and shock absorber, which are located directly in the strut. Thus, the telescopic stand is able to smooth out shock-type loads. It is worth noting that the stroke of this type of suspension is limited according to the stroke of the shock absorber itself. As a rule, snowmobiles with such suspension have incredible maneuverability in dense forest conditions, since the ski base is small.
Also, one of the simplest and most common suspensions is the spring system. This engineering solution was used on the legendary domestic car "Buran". This model has one ski track, as a result of which the equipment does not have the necessary maneuverability. It is generally extremely difficult to enter the required turn at speed. But in general. The suspension performance itself is quite acceptable.
Do-it-yourself snowmobile from a walk-behind tractor: reasons for choice and selection criteria
A walk-behind tractor is a worthy technique for transformation, which is in the arsenal of almost every resident of our country. In the list of homemade devices that can be adapted from it, the snowmobile occupies one of the first places, competing with the caracat and the all-terrain vehicle. This is due to the fact that in winter, when a snowmobile is needed, the farm does not need the standard tasks of plowing, hilling or mowing the grass. Therefore, it makes sense to remove the engine in the winter and make a snowmobile based on it, and in the summer to return it to the walk-behind tractor and operate it in the standard way. Not every modification of a walk-behind tractor is suitable for a snowmobile. It is best to use for this purpose those that have:
- rear towing device;
- possibility of manual control;
- medium-power motor, cooled by air.
The Neva walk-behind tractors, which are available in eight models, are considered ideal for a homemade snowmobile from a walk-behind tractor. All of them represent a group of tillage machines with average traction potential (6-9 hp). Despite their low cost, the motor systems are assembled and tested in Japan, which makes them extremely durable.
Taking all these points into account, such walk-behind tractors make snowmobiles with good power. This means that it will be able to carry not only the driver, but also at least one passenger.
Chainsaw snowmobile
Advice. The snowmobile can be made as either a tracked vehicle or a ski vehicle. Before you start making a snowmobile from a chainsaw, you need to choose equipment that will have all the necessary characteristics. The best option for this purpose is the Druzhba, Ural and Shtil chainsaw (the power of these tools is ideal for creating high-speed snowmobiles).
Important! The engine and gearbox are the main parts of the chainsaw that are used during operation.

The snowmobile design consists of four parts:
- Caterpillars.
- Ski
- Transmissions.
- Engine.
Chainsaw Ural The assembly of a homemade snowmobile is carried out not according to some proposed scheme or standard drawing, but based on the materials and tools that the master has at his disposal.
Instructions for assembling a snowmobile from a chainsaw
Assembling a product is quite an interesting job. It consists of several successive steps that must be performed carefully and responsibly.
- The first stage is the assembly of the frame base of the future homemade snowmobile. For work you will need steel corners (size - 50 x 36 cm) or steel sheets (thickness - at least 2 mm). The middle part of the structure is made from the corners, and the front and back are made from sheets.
Advice. To give the necessary rigidity to the structure, the metal is bent at an angle of 90 degrees.
- Carefully make two through holes to accommodate the track shaft and track wheel guides (tensioners are installed on both sides of the side members).
Important! The front device is specifically designed to tension the second stage of the idler gear, and it also helps in adjusting the track itself.
- Special brackets are carefully welded to the bottom of the side members (they are attached at the same distance from each other), support rollers are installed in their open grooves.
- The rollers (in rubber covers) are placed on five axes, each of which is attached to the underside of the open grooves.
- Between each of the elements special bushings made of duralumin are installed (they are made from a suitable pipe).
Advice. In order not to waste time making rollers and axles for them, they can be borrowed from old equipment for digging up potatoes.
- The bracket axles themselves are secured using nuts and locknuts (they are designed to strengthen the snowmobile frame and hold the side members at a certain distance from each other).
- Three metal corners are used to make racks for attaching the prepared chainsaw gearbox, and install the intermediate shaft of the chain drive.
- A seat for the user is installed on the prepared frame (a suitable box or car seat is used for these purposes), it is fixed in the area between the middle and rear parts of the structure.
Chainsaw snowmobile
- A hole is made in the front section of the frame to accommodate the steering wheel; it is made from a pipe with welded control handles.
- Metal gussets are installed in the places where the snowmobile racks are attached (they strengthen the structure, make it stronger and more reliable).
Important! In order for the future homemade snowmobile to have good maneuverability in snowy terrain, it is equipped with a caterpillar mechanism.
- A snowmobile drive shaft is made from a metal pipe, and a special round flange is inserted into it for attaching gears.
- To create the steering, equipment from old motorcycles or mopeds with three-lever control is used.
The finished snowmobile is light in weight and can easily be placed in the trunk of a car for transportation over long distances. Its controls are so simple and intuitive that even a child can easily use it.
How to make a snowmobile
You can make a snowmobile from different vehicles that are in the garage.
From a motorcycle
You can make a snowmobile from a motorcycle using different models. The most popular are IZH and Ural. The advantages of such a rework are that no special changes need to be made. If the product is in good condition, you can even keep the original frame.
The conversion technology is as follows:
- Make a rectangular frame from metal pipes or appropriate corners. Its optimal dimensions are 150*43.5 cm.
- In addition to the IZh motorcycle, it is necessary to make a steering beam. It is made from metal corners. The optimal dimensions are 50*50*5 mm. Additionally, the beam is sheathed with metal plates.
- After this, it can be installed horizontally on the drilling machine. Treat the connection area. Do the same with the frame. In these places you need to make special grooves for reliable fixation. Additionally, attach a corner to the front frame.
- Now you can attach the seat for motorcyclists.
- You need to make holes in the side members.
- A channel must be placed between the front and middle parts of the frame to strengthen the structure.
- Regardless of whether the snowmobile is made from a Ural or another model of motorcycle, it is necessary to select a track sprocket and rubber band in advance. The optimal dimensions are 220*30 cm with a thickness of no more than 1 cm.
- Before installation, it is recommended to cover the track with nylon, which will allow the material not to delaminate during operation.
- Now you can move on to the transmission. It consists of two parts. The first, the front axle, is the drive axle. It is made of a tubular shaft, a track sprocket and a roller. The second is the rear axle. It is made from a caterpillar drum and a tubular shaft.
- You need to complete the snowmobile manufacturing process by welding sheet metal skis.
When converting a motorcycle into a snowmobile, it is important not to change the steering system. In the final product, this part must perform its original functions.
The principles of modification are the same, they do not depend on the vehicle model. But the snowmobile from the Ural motorcycle will be heavier.
From Zhiguli
The design of the car is characterized by simplicity, ease of operation and high maneuverability. To make it you need to follow the instructions:
- Frame assembly. It's better to make it from pipes. The frame consists of front and central beams (steel pipes with a diameter of 5 cm), two lower diagonal elements (bent pipes with a diameter of 3 cm) and a rear strut. Welding is used to fix the elements.
- Installation of steering columns. To do this, you need to place two bushings on the front beam.
- Fixing the axle shaft. It is located on the rear frame; first you need to weld the body under it. It is made from a metal pipe with a diameter of 6 cm. Secure the axle shafts using bushings and electric rivets.
- Installing a car engine. First you need to make the front and rear fastening units on the central beam of the frame. First they need to be placed on the engine itself, and only then welded to the frame.
- In a homemade snowmobile, you can install large diameter wheels or skis made of sheet metal. In the first case, the rear and front wheels need to be connected in pairs with a metal pipe. At the same time, make grooves in the hub for the bearings, which are subsequently secured with spring rings. Additionally, install a spacer between the bearings.
- Install a sprocket on each wheel depending on the expected maximum speed. This snowmobile can be used at any time of the year. For a snowy winter, a design in which the front wheels are replaced with skis is suitable.
- Installation of the steering system. It is taken whole from a car, for example, from a Zaporozhets, or a motorcycle. The choice depends on personal preference. In the first case, gas, clutch and brake pedals are additionally installed. The gearbox is controlled using a lever and a rigid rod.
- Installation of a snowmobile cabin, the role of which is played by the car body.
In a similar way, you can assemble a structure from Oka with your own hands.
From a moped
The easiest way is to make a snowmobile from a scooter with your own hands. This is due to the fact that no special changes will be made to the design. This will allow you to use it as a snowmobile in winter, and as a moped in the warmer months.
Converting a scooter into a snowmobile is carried out using the following technology:
- Prepare all the details in advance. You will need a caterpillar, skis (plastic ones are possible), a driven sprocket of the intermediate shaft from a Buran snow scooter, 2 wheels from a children's scooter and 2 wheels with bearings.
- Now you can start remaking the moped. For a scooter rider it will be easy. The drive wheel must be removed and replaced with another one of smaller diameter in order to replace the gear ratio. This will reduce the maximum possible speed for scooters of this design, since when driving on snow, the load on the engine increases, which means that high speed can be detrimental to it.
- Cut a hole for the shaft from the drive wheel disk, and then make hooks for the caterpillar. Make a bandage from a sheet of metal and attach the hooks to it. The result should be a wheel with hooks.
- Connect the drive sprocket to the wheels with bearings.
- Make a frame from metal corners.
- Attach the ski to the front fork through a special rack. This will allow you to leave the ski on a flat surface when tilting the snowmobile.
- Make a small cover over the caterpillar to prevent snow from getting into the body kit.
- Make a platform for your feet from a metal sheet.
From the cultivator
A snowmobile made from a cultivator can be wheeled, tracked or combined. The advantage of this design is that there will be a minimum of rework work. It is easiest to make a wheeled one, but homemade tracked snowmobiles are also easy to make from this product. To do this you will need:
- Make a frame for a snowmobile from metal pipes. You can use corners instead. The frame should be in the shape of a rectangle.
- Attach the seat to the base. It can be a box or any similar device.
- Make skis from sheets of metal and then weld them to the frame.
- The resulting structure can be attached to a motor cultivator. Now you can pour gasoline into the tank and use the product for its intended purpose.
From Friendship
The Friendship chainsaw has a powerful engine that can propel a small vehicle. Therefore, you can make a mini snowmobile based on it if you follow the instructions:
- Frame assembly. To do this, you need to prepare steel corners measuring 50*36 cm or sheets with a thickness of more than 2 mm in advance. Angles are used to assemble the middle part of the frame, and sheets are used for the front and back. The metal is bent at an angle of 90° to ensure the required rigidity of the structure.
- Make two through holes that are necessary for attaching the track shaft and track guide wheels. The last parts are installed on both sides of the side members and are designed to adjust the track tension.
- Brackets for installing track rollers are attached to the bottom of the side members. It is better to fix these parts by welding.
- Place the rollers in rubber covers and fix them on five axes, placing them at the bottom of the grooves. The axles themselves can be attached with nuts or bolts.
- Now, between all the elements, install bushings, which are recommended to be made of duralumin.
- Make three racks from metal corners. The chainsaw gearbox will be located on them. To strengthen the structure, you can use scarves.
- Now you can install the seat on the frame. It should be located between the middle and rear parts of the structure.
- The steering wheel will be located in front of the frame. You first need to make a hole for it. A pipe with control handles can act as a steering wheel. To create a control system, it is still better to take equipment from a motorcycle or moped.
- Now you need to make the drive shaft. To do this, you can take a metal pipe into which you insert a round flange to fix the gears.
From a motorized dog
A motorized dog is a motorized towing vehicle. It's easy to convert it into a tracked snowmobile. The sequence of actions is no different from the previous options. You can make a snowmobile on tracks with your own hands, following the instructions:
- Welding a frame from metal pipes or corners. It is recommended to draw a diagram and determine the dimensions in advance.
- Assembly of the track block. In particular, it requires the manufacture of a caterpillar, inside of which wheels of small diameter are installed.
- Installation of track block and engine. These parts are mounted on the frame.
- Steering column assembly. It is recommended to take a ready-made steering system from a motorized dog and not make any changes to it.
- Installation of body and skis. If these parts were made of wood, then they must be coated with enamel before use.
Homemade snowmobile from an IZH motorcycle or any other
A homemade snowmobile from an IZH motorcycle or any other is not as difficult as it might seem. Moreover, when winter comes, you can’t ride a regular motorcycle very much, so you have to make a homemade snowmobile from a motorcycle.
To make it comfortable to ride on winter roads, you need to re-equip the motorcycle, install a side trailer and change the front wheel so that it has a deeper tread.
Only a snowmobile can drive on snow-covered roads; not even cars can drive through serious snowdrifts. For those who can, it’s better to buy a snowmobile and not worry, but for those who don’t have money or want to make something useful and original themselves, you can make a homemade snowmobile from a motorcycle.
No one will convert a modern sportsbike or tourist motorcycle, but an old IZH or any other rural motorcycle can easily be converted into a snowmobile for the winter. Today we’ll talk about how to make a homemade snowmobile from an IZH motorcycle, Minsk and Ural.
Snowmobiles from motorcycles
In winter, using motorcycles with factory equipment is almost impossible.
The only ones that can somehow move on snow cover are motorcycles equipped with side trailers, and the drive wheel is re-shod with rubber with deep tread.
But even then, it is not possible to use such motorcycles on all surfaces.

On uncleared roads, it is sometimes possible to travel only on snowmobiles. But not everyone has the opportunity to purchase a snowmobile, and it is not always economically feasible.
In this case, “skillful hands” come to the rescue. After all, it is quite possible to convert an ordinary wheeled motorcycle into a full-fledged snowmobile, and even no special intervention in the design is required.
Therefore, in summer such a motorcycle can be used for its intended purpose, and in winter it can be converted into a snowmobile.
It’s clear that it’s unlikely that anyone would agree to remake expensive sports or touring bikes, but it’s quite possible to remake domestic “hard workers”.
Next, we’ll look at how you can make a snowmobile from the most common Soviet motorcycles - “Minsk”, IZH, Ural. We will also consider walk-behind tractors as a snowmobile, which have now become very popular in homestead farming.
Manufacturing of structural elements
Before starting to manufacture structural elements, prepare a drawing, required materials and tools. You can take ready-made drawings based on the Bullfinch or Vepr snowmobiles. Tools you will need:
- welding machine;
- pipe bender or finished frame;
- hammer;
- screwdrivers.
Since the design of the mini snowmobile is low, the seat is made of durable waterproof material. The fuel tank is made of metal. Its volume should be from 10 to 15 liters. You can use a motorcycle chain as a drive.
How to make a snowmobile track
A snowmobile track is created from tires or conveyor belt. The work will be difficult and time-consuming if tires are used as the basis. The sides are cut out of them, so the work requires a sharp shoe knife or an electric jigsaw. To facilitate the process, tires are selected with a suitable tread pattern. Making a homemade caterpillar:
- The sides of the tire are cut out with a knife. If the knife blade is periodically moistened in a soapy solution, the cutting process will become easier. When using an electric jigsaw, install a blade with small teeth and moisten it with water.
- If, when cutting, the track turns out to be hard or extra layers have formed on the wrong side, they are also cut off.
- Cutting a new structure is done when there is a mismatch in the tread pattern. The structure made must cling to the soil, so the structure of the pattern must be correct.
A caterpillar made according to this design is quite reliable due to the fact that it has a closed loop. Its disadvantage is its narrow width. To make a larger size, it is doubled. If the caterpillar is made from a conveyor belt, then it is combined into a single ring. This can be done in 2 ways:
- like a piano hinge (with a hinge);
- ribbon stripes.
You need to choose the appropriate thickness of the tape if it is sewn on. Its thickness should be suitable for the engine power. A homemade snowmobile from an IZH motorcycle requires the use of a 10 mm thick tape. To increase the service life of the snowmobile, the edges of the conveyor belt are stitched with fishing line. The seams are made according to the method of overcasting the edges with an interval of 1 cm.
Tackles
A trolley is a movable platform that protects the chassis of equipment from unnecessary mechanical loads. The platform is used when it is necessary to drive a snowmobile into a garage. For its manufacture, a metal pipe of medium diameter (6×6 mm), rollers and a bearing system are used. The wheels are installed with rubber coating and metal discs. Their diameter must correspond to the weight of the equipment.
Snowmobile skis consist of a base, a shock-absorbing part, a rod, a fork and bipod, and a link leg. Skis can be made in different designs from different materials. If plastic linings are used for the base, they are supplemented with expanders. The extensions are mounted with fastenings to the snowmobile chassis. The plastic design is suitable for small equipment. For large and medium-sized snowmobiles, you will need metal skis.
- To give the skis a shape, cut out the base from a cardboard stencil. At the same time, a bend is formed in front. The amount of bending is done at your own discretion. A ski track with a large bend glides poorly and collects snow. And this creates unnecessary braking. Therefore, you should not make it too large. The approximate size of the ski track is 2.5 cm wide and 100 cm long.
- A pipe is welded along the edges of each part. This gives additional rigidity to the product and protects it from stones that come along the way.
- Where the bend passes, the pipe is welded along the contour.
- Shock-absorbing parts are fixed to the skis. Bolts are used as fastening elements.
- The platform and the nose of the skis are connected by a hydraulic pipe. The top part is ready.
- For the lower part, the hydraulic pipe is fixed at 4 points and compressed.
- Then the polyethylene pipe is attached with self-tapping screws, having previously cut it. Instead of a polyethylene pipe, you can use polypropylene.
Finished skis must be painted.
Slimes
Slides are removable guides along which the snowmobile track slides. They prevent the track from sagging between the wheels and protect it from abrasion. Snowmobile slicks can be purchased at a store or made from a water pipe. The thickness of the pipe should be about 10 mm. Strips are made from it and mounted to the runners.
Rollers
Rollers are the supporting elements of the tracked undercarriage system. They create tight contact between the track and the surface of the ground support. Steel sheets are used as supports.
Variable speed drive
A variator is a special mechanism that allows you to smoothly regulate speed in mini snowmobiles. Safari is the most popular CVT. It consists of 2 pulleys: driven and driving, therefore it is capable of adjusting 2 parameters. These are revolutions and movement resistance. The pulley will operate like a clutch if the engine speed reaches 2200 rpm. In this case, the engine and the reverse shaft are disconnected.
Engine
To make a snowmobile powerful, you need to choose a powerful engine. The best engines for assembling a snowmobile are Lifan type engines with a power of 15 hp. With. This model is equipped with a reduction gearbox and has a centrifugal automatic clutch.
Homemade snowmobile with Dnepr engine (3 videos)
This is such a wonderful snowmobile. Dnepr motorcycle was used as propulsion .
Let's try to compare it with the Buran snowmobile. The Buran has one caterpillar, the homemade one has two. The cost of the Buran is significantly higher compared to this snowmobile. Well... and... probably that's all? This is where the advantages of this wonderful homemade product end. I really don’t know how things are with fuel consumption there; most likely, here the Dnieper wins over the snowstorm. We will look for the owner and try to extract from him the details of the design of this vehicle and its performance characteristics. Our forum is still in a coma after the attack by spam bots, but it will soon come out of it and we will continue the discussion. In the meantime, I’ll go over the bones of this homemade miracle.
I can firmly say that I would not ride such a snowmobile far into the forest for any price. This is extremely dangerous, in my opinion... you may not get back if you go too far. If you try to make a comparative comparison with Buran, you get the following.
Buran's engine was specially designed taking into account all the details and subtleties of high-speed operation in winter. A specially designed engine is one thing. Designed specifically for starting and running when cold - this is also the case)). High speeds and strong forced cooling are two. Unfortunately, the self-made Dneprohod has nothing to respond to these colossal Buranovsky advantages. The Dnepr engine is heating up, and in the video I didn’t even notice electric fans - this is very bad, because on the Internet there are diagrams even for forced cooling. Further. Buran has a variator, but here you have to change gears (this is clearly visible in the video), despite the fact that the snowmobile does not have the same roll as a motorcycle. Those. again, the Dnepr engine is not intended for snowmobiling. If you also take into account that spare parts for it have become very expensive, such a snowmobile is sinking)) Here is my verdict.
In any case, the author of this miracle is great! All the criticism of his homemade snowmobile does not detract from his achievement at all. And this is precisely an achievement - to come up with and implement your plan. I am one hundred percent sure that his next homemade technique will be much more reliable and thoughtful. Or maybe he will finalize this one (as much as possible).
PS do you like listening to music? I love it very much. My MP3 player is always with me, and I regularly download the newest songs on the Internet for free. Okay, let's turn on the music and watch the video, since there is no music there.
Video:
UPD After writing and publishing the material, I found the author’s comment about his brainchild. I quote : “I did it in Krasnoyarsk with a friend for a month, I’ve been finishing it up for two years now, the car is a beast. I bought the chassis: 2 Buran tracks, short balancers, 6 pieces, I also installed the leading ones from the Buran on the back and the sloths in the front; I didn’t know, I took the wheel from the Urals, cut off the spokes, and stuck sprockets into the wheel from the kambain so that the original brakes would remain; it cost about 30,000.”
Engine selection
Gasoline engines are used for walk-behind tractors or strollers. Engine speed is controlled by a throttle handle located on the steering wheel. To make a homemade tracked snowmobile with your own hands, the easiest way is to use ready-made small-volume engines for walk-behind tractors with pre-installed:
- Fuel tank.
- Ignition system.
- Reduction gearbox with a ratio of 1:2.
- Centrifugal clutch, automatically activated when the speed increases.
The power of these engines does not exceed 10 horsepower, but they are easy to install: the technician does not need to separately assemble the ignition system, connect fuel pipes, adjust the clutch, etc. There are different options on the market:
Brand | Model | Power, l. With. | Volume, cm3 | Weight, kg | Approximate price, thousand rubles. |
Kipor | KG160S | 4,1 | 163 | 15,5 | 20−25 |
Sadko | GE-200R | 6,5 | 196 | 15,7 | 15−20 |
Lifan | 168 FD-R | 5,5 | 196 | 18,0 | 15−20 |
Zongshen | ZS168FB4 | 6,5 | 196 | 16,0 | 10−15 |
Nomad | NT200R | 6,5 | 196 | 20,1 | 10−15 |
Brait | BR-177F-2R | 9,0 | 270 | 30,0 | 10−15 |
Honda | GX - 270 | 9,0 | 270 | 25,0 | 45−50 |
If it is not possible to purchase a ready-made engine from a walk-behind tractor, then you can use an engine from a stroller. Such engines are 10-15 horsepower more powerful, but require self-assembly. The system includes:
- Engine.
- Clutch.
- Gearbox.
- Gas tank (volume 5-10 liters).
- Muffler.
- Generator.
- Electronic ignition switch and coil.
Some of the elements will come from old motorcycles (“Minsk”, “Vostok”, “Java”, “Ural”). The gas tank is located as close as possible to the carburetor to reduce the length of the pipes.
What will we get as a result?
Simply put, there is a ski with steering in front, a frame with a motor and a seat, and a caterpillar track at the bottom or rear. The frame will be suitable from IZH Planet or Voskhod, but additional fasteners will need to be reconstructed. The engine can be taken from the Voskhod motorcycle (20 horsepower) and put on caterpillar tracks. A snowmobile with such an engine can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. For household use this is quite enough.
You can use a ready-made frame or make it according to drawings from scraps of pipes with a small diameter. It is also important to strengthen the frame using welding. In some cases, temporary fastenings are used. If necessary, instead of the tracks and skis, you can return the wheels. The assembled structure must be strong and reliable. The chain drive is used from the main propeller shaft (you can use IZH Planeta or Ural) to the drive shaft of the tracked structure.
To make a caterpillar engine, you can use a part from the caterpillar belt of another unit (for example, Buran) or purchase it separately in a factory variation. However, this is not always possible. In this case, you can assemble it yourself.
To create a caterpillar with your own hands, you need slats (plastic or tin), a conveyor belt and tin slats, fasteners and drawings. When making slats for lugs, you need to make parts (plastic or tin) of pipes with bends of the same length and width, and then attach them to the transport belt at the same distance. Three pairs of wheels, different in size, will serve as the drive shaft in the tracked structure.
For the drive shaft you can take larger wheels, for the other two - smaller ones (they will serve as rollers). The rollers need to be “shod” in rubber to have a better connection with the caterpillar track. It should be borne in mind that all home-made structures are not very durable, so you should not subject such a snowmobile to high speed loads.
The shock absorbing system on the rear suspension can be left over from the original motorcycle (its basic design). On the front, you can use springs from a car or a motorcycle. Shock absorption is very important during turning movements; the stability of the entire structure depends on it.
A fuel tank with a volume of 15 to 20 liters can be placed in a more convenient place , according to the drawings you choose, but basically it remains in its original place in the motorcycle version.
There is also an option for making two tracks based on the Ant motorcycle. Since the side rear bases are made for wheels, they can be used for two track structures. The fuel tank may also remain under the bar, but may be moved to the rear, depending on the design chosen and the conditions in which the sled will be used.
You can also consider the option of a snowmobile based on the Minsk motorcycle. For the front part with one ski, use the option discussed above. The back is more difficult. We will replace the driven gear of the bridge with a rear sprocket from the IZH Planet motorcycle. The intermediate shaft serves as a drive to the axle, remaining a chain shaft. If you don’t have the parts you need for the job, you can purchase them from the aftermarket.
Sawmill
Several homemade sawmills using chainsaws have been invented. They are:
- Stationary, motionless. In them, the chainsaw is placed in a special machine and remains in place - a log moves towards it. The cutting quality is high; workpieces of any length can be cut. But the design has a complex log feeding mechanism.
- Stationary mobile. Option with rail guides along which a carriage with a fixed saw moves. The workpiece is stationary. The option is easier to use, but the length of the logs is limited.
- Mobile. The sawing part moves along the log. It is not heavy and can be tolerated. The workpiece itself serves as a guide. This option is convenient for one-time work or small volumes of cutting. Requires a lot of effort to move the sawing device.
Snowmobile assembly instructions
To create a quality pneumatic snowmobile, you first need to think about a forced air cooling system. To create it, you just need to put a special extension with a pulley in two streams on the knee shaft. From this device you need to run belts to the generator and two fan impellers to ensure rotation.
You can quickly carry out these simple operations with your own hands. Next, you can proceed to creating a fuel pump device; it is better to place it on top of the oil pump cover drive; the fuel pump must be connected to the shaft of the oil structure.
Next you need to install the filter and carburetor. The air filter can also be borrowed from the ZAZ-965A, and the K-127 is suitable as a carburetor. The final stage of the design will be the installation of the ring gear; it must be mounted on the flywheel using an adapter.
Don't forget to cover your homemade snowmobile with a hood; a galvanized steel sheet is perfect for this. You can create other elements for pneumatics with your own hands; wheels for it can also be homemade. Let us remind you that for this you will need:
- chambers with low internal pressure (wheels from a tractor trolley can be used);
- frame disks (sizes must be selected individually);
- bandages from transport belts.
Knowing the entire sequence of actions and instructions for constructing a snowmobile, you can quickly and easily make a budget vehicle for snowy roads!
Is it necessary to register such changes with Gostekhnadzor?
Probably everyone already knows that when purchasing a snowmobile, it must be registered. You also need to have a category A license to drive such a vehicle. Using a snowmobile without a license or while intoxicated is strictly punishable by law. However, are there rules regarding the registration of small changes to the design of a snowmobile, such as rear suspension changes?
The law establishes the rule that owners of any vehicle must present it for technical inspection from time to time. Snowmobile? not an exception. The interval at which this needs to be done is determined depending on the terrain and type of vehicle. If a tracked vehicle is designed for eight or more seats for passengers, then it must be presented for technical inspection every six months. If this is an ordinary snowmobile, then it needs to be inspected every year. When undergoing regular technical inspection, there is no need for additional registration of minor changes in the design. Main ? ensure safe movement on a snowmobile.
Homemade swamp tricycle on IZh Planet
The design of this homemade swamp vehicle is so simple that almost any car enthusiast can repeat it in his own garage. The basis of the swamp vehicle is the IZH Planet 3 motorcycle. IZH Planet motorcycles often become donors in all-terrain homemade vehicles, this is primarily due to the endurance and unpretentiousness of their engines.
The bridge was taken from a Muscovite and modernized. We cut out the bearing mounts from the doll with a grinder, then welded the yoke to the bridge stocking (if it is not welded, the stocking will warp when you cut it in half), then cut the stocking itself in order to secure the sprocket. The chain tensioner was also borrowed from the combine.
The KF-97 cameras are used from the agricultural trailer of the T-150 tractor. The tire for such a tube wheel is the same tube, only cut to a smaller diameter. First, the “tire” is put on, then it is tightened with belts. The transverse harnesses turned out to be 1.02 m long, and the longitudinal strip was 3.5 m long. The width of the longitudinal strip is 30 centimeters. The transverse belts with the longitudinal strip are connected using bolts.
The basis was taken from cornfield disks, cut in half using a small grinder and extended by 30 centimeters with steel plates welded between the disk halves (6 plates in total). The disc is covered with a chamber from a VAZ car, cut to a larger diameter. Since the disks were used from a Niva, and the axle from a Muscovite, the rear disks at the mounting points had to be trimmed.
Frame, brakes and transmission
The motorcycle frame has been lengthened and strengthened. To prevent the pendulum fork from “walking”, it was welded. The chain and sprockets are borrowed from the combine. Their ratio is 2 to 1. A small star with 25 teeth, it is attached to the drum using eight hardened 10-point bolts. A large star with 50 teeth. The braking system of a swamp vehicle is no different from any other, so the brakes are left unchanged. But the drum was modernized to accommodate sprocket mounts.
Homemade Buran snowmobiles
"Buran-2"
18-year-old Alexey Sotnikov, a graduate of a technical lyceum from the village of Nizhny Mamon, presented his version of the Buran snowmobile. It took him half a motorcycle, a little scooter, some spare parts from agricultural machinery and two years of research. This is Alexey’s third model: initially he built an ATV, then he decided that skis were more reliable in winter, after which he had to build a new frame (the first one could not withstand the load and broke. The Voronezh copy of the Buran is equipped with a two-cylinder engine from the Izh-Jupiter motorcycle with a capacity of 24 horsepower power, a transmission from a scooter with reverse gear, a headlight from a tractor, a homemade gas tank and a frame welded from a metal profile. At the rear, the snowmobile is driven by a caterpillar from a conveyor belt with tracks of our own making, in front there are two shock-absorbing aluminum skis. On a homemade snowmobile you can overcome half-meter snowdrifts , and the power reserve is even enough for drifting.
"Zimogor"
Two homemade Zimogor snowmobiles, equipped with 4-stroke Briggs & Stratton engines (22 and 18 horsepower) and tracks from the long Buran, took part in a large expedition in 2009: four thousand kilometers from Rybinsk to Salekhard. Of the two snowmobiles participating in the run, one had already covered about 4,000 km at the time of the start - it was a test model on which various design options were tested (chassis, shock absorbers, springs, etc.). The journey began on March 14 and ended on April 20: the snowmobiles covered a distance of 4,000 km in 37 days. The snowmobiles did not have low gears or reverse gear, but the vehicles weighed 200 kilograms, and tanks with a capacity of 50 liters allowed for a significant reserve of autonomous operation. In some places, the Zimogors managed to reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour.
Ski "Minsk"
The base vehicle of the next homemade snowmobile is a Minsk motorcycle with a 125 cc engine. The rear axle with differential and axle shafts was borrowed from the UAZ-469. The suspension is homemade with additional shock absorbers from the Izh motorcycle. Tubes with a diameter of 1050x420 mm, “shod” in tires with cut tread and sidewalls. Both of them are from a tractor trolley. The maximum speed of the wheel-ski "Minsk" is 45 kilometers per hour. The same designer became the author of the tracked ski modification of the Minsk, installing a drive shaft with 17-tooth sprockets from the Buran snowmobile. The tracked "Minsk" can accelerate to 50 kilometers per hour.
Pneumatic vehicle
A snowmobile with low-pressure tires is universal in that in summer it can easily turn into an ordinary all-terrain vehicle. Our next example was built by a certain Vladimir from Solikamsk. The pneumatic vehicle is built on the basis of the SZD motorized stroller using a power unit from the Izh Planet-4 motorcycle with a power of about 20 horsepower. The tubes of the huge wheels once belonged to the heavy-duty KrAZ truck. The author put his invention up for sale. Such a snowmobile costs only 55 thousand rubles.
18-year-old Alexey Sotnikov, a graduate of a technical lyceum from the village of Nizhny Mamon, Voronezh region, built a snowmobile with his own hands. It took him half a motorcycle, a little scooter, some spare parts from agricultural machinery and two years of research.
“This is the third model,” Alexey pointed to his product. — At first I actually built an ATV…. Then I decided that skis were more reliable in winter... I built it - the frame broke, it was too light, made of pipe... I made a new one, stronger...
Sotnikov talks reluctantly. But he makes crafts with pleasure. At the lyceum, he mastered several professions at once: mechanic, welder, machine operator, and has loved handicrafts since childhood. “He made the heating in the house with his own hands, the gates in the garage, a lot of things... He even attached a homemade modem to the house,” Alexei’s father with legitimate pride showed a plastic parabola mounted on a long pole. Sotnikov Jr. frowned and looked at his snowmobile.
Engine from the Izh-Jupiter motorcycle: two cylinders, 24 horsepower. Transmission from a scooter, with reverse gear. Homemade gas tank, frame welded from a metal profile. The caterpillar is made of a conveyor belt with tracks of its own design at the rear, and spring-loaded aluminum skis in front. Tractor headlight, siren and tinted windshield. On the side, with oil paint, is the proud name “Buran”.
The product easily plows half a meter of snow, and the power reserve is enough for drifting, the father said. Alexey was silent and grimaced - he clearly didn’t like the hype around the snowmobile. He completed his task - he surpassed his friend, who was the first in the village to build a snowmobile - and the rest did not interest him. When asked about his creative plans, the master muttered: “I’ll join the army.”
Using an empty aerosol can, a syringe, and a piece of vinyl tubing, you can make a miniature spray gun. An adapter is made from a vinyl tube between the nozzle of the syringe and the valve of the can (the spray button must be temporarily removed). Accordingly, the diameter of the tube should be such that it fits tightly onto the syringe and balloon. The adapter should be as short as possible so that the injected paint does not dry out in it.
Liquid is pumped into the can with a syringe. The sequence is as follows: first we press the valve of the can, then we empty the syringe, close the valve, and disconnect the syringe. It is necessary to pump approximately half the capacity of the cylinder. It is worth considering that its valve is made of ordinary rubber and the solvent included in nitro paints will quickly disable it. Therefore, the same aerosol as a spray gun should not be used more than once.
After pumping the liquid, it is necessary to create excess pressure in the can. For the adapter from the compressor to the cylinder valve, a syringe needle cover is suitable. Its open end is inserted into the compressor hose; on the other side, a heated needle makes a hole through which the adapter is put on the cylinder valve. The pressure inside the cylinder must be increased to 2.5-3 kilograms per centimeter.
After pumping up the air, you need to return the spray bottle to its place and you can spray.
The main cause of expensive smartphone breakdowns is falling on the side edges, which causes the display to warp and crack. A belt-bumper made of an elastic plastic bracelet, which is sold in any toy store, will help protect the gadget. If you choose the right color, the protection will also be elegant.
The author of the idea advises stocking up on several bracelets at once, since experience shows that an acceptable result is not obtained immediately. Otherwise, you will end up with several multi-colored bumpers for all occasions.
The bracelet is stretched around the perimeter of the device: carefully so that all corners are closed and the smartphone is reliably protected. Then use a pencil or fine marker to mark the holes for the ports and buttons. We remove the bracelet, use a sharp knife and scissors to cut holes: small ones for headphones and a charger, larger ones for buttons and connectors.
Pull the bumper back - your smartphone is protected!
Extreme enthusiasts can make a household flamethrower from an aerosol can—the creators of the device propose using it to fight harmful insects and zombies.
We will need a household piezo lighter for gas stoves and a can of deodorant. By attaching it to a lighter like a spray gun - so that a stream of sprayed liquid hits the arc of the piezoelectric element, we get a portable flamethrower with a flame jet of up to 30 centimeters. Be careful, protect your house from fire!
The object created by residents of the Georgian city of Akhalkalaki looks even more extreme. Desperate to wait for help from the authorities, they themselves built a pedestrian bridge across the river, using an old passenger carriage for this.
Until now, decommissioned rolling stock has been actively used to create garages, sheds, country houses and even a temporary Orthodox church (in Voronezh). But the idea of a carriage bridge captivates not only with its simplicity and aesthetic sophistication, but also with its tourist appeal. The carriage has enough space not only for pedestrians, but also, for example, for a bar.

Snowmobiles IZH
Let's move on to middle class motorcycles - IZH. The common types of snowmobiles that are made from these motorcycles are the same wheeled and tracked. In fact, snowmobiles based on the Minsk and IZH are even structurally similar . However, often instead of a ski in front, a wheel made of a tube with tire beads is used.
But in this case, the front fork is redesigned, since such a wheel is much wider than the standard one. Although you can use the same ski.
As for the tracked version, the difference usually comes down to the size of the track itself, and as a result, the track module.
Power of homemade snowmobiles based on a motorcycle
By independently assembling a snowmobile based on a motorcycle, you can get a fairly fast and agile unit. For example, the engine power of the Voskhod motorcycle ? OK. 15 l. With. By putting this motorcycle on skis, you can ride at a maximum speed of at least 60–70 km/h. Unlike the motorcycle "Voskhod", "Izh-Planeta" already has a power of 20 hp. s., and the well-known ?Ural? ? 40 l. With. At such speeds, the snowmobile can accelerate to more than 100 km/h.
However, it must be remembered that the build quality for movement at such speeds must be at the highest level. If, squeezing all the juices out of the Izh-Planet, you don’t have to worry too much, then more powerful engines, like the one installed in the Voskhod motorcycle, need to be handled with caution. You should not think that if one of the all-terrain vehicle components malfunctions at speeds of more than 80–100 km/h, snow will soften your fall. At this speed, falling into wet snow is comparable to falling on asphalt. [ads-pc-1]
Snowmobiles from Ural
But Ural motorcycles are used as snowmobiles more often in the tracked version. Their peculiarity is that the motorcycle itself is quite heavy, and it also has a cardan drive to the rear wheel, so a conventional tracked module with a chain drive is not enough.
The design of the module for the Ural is much more complicated, and the drive is organized in a different way - through a gearbox. Therefore, changes are also made to the design of the motorcycle frame, otherwise the height of the motorcycle will increase, which will lead to an increase in the center of gravity, and as a result, a decrease in stability.
Snowmobile from the Minsk motorcycle
Motorcycle "Minsk" with an engine whose volume is 125 cubic meters. see, but the power of this engine will be quite enough to make a homemade snowmobile from this motorcycle.
It is possible to make a wheeled ski or tracked snowmobile. A wheel-ski snowmobile is the easiest to make: you need to remove the wheels and replace the front wheel with a wide ski.
To do this, you need to find a pipe to make a stand out of it, take out the fastening element and, using the wheel axle shaft, attach this ski to the front fork. At the bottom of the rack you need to attach the ski itself - take a strip of metal and wrap the front end on it.
With the rear part of the snowmobile, everything is not so simple: you need to make a special module and attach it instead of the rear wheel.
This module is designed using the rear axle from UAZ with some changes. It is necessary to change the driven gear on the bridge to an IZh sprocket. A chain drive is still used here, but through an intermediate shaft.
You also need to take larger wheels, the wheels from the PTS-2-4 trailer are perfect, but you only need to take tubes and install the sidewalls of the tires on them, and you also need to wrap these tubes with belts or chains to make rowing better in the snow.
If everything is done correctly, then a snowmobile made from a Minsk motorcycle will be able to travel at a speed of 45 km/h.
If you make a tracked snowmobile from a Minsk motorcycle, then you also need to use a ski, which is attached to a fork; approximately the same module is installed in the rear part, only it has 2 shafts and they are fixed to the frame.
The shaft at the front is equipped with sprockets, 2 large sprockets drive the track, and a small sprocket drives the shaft. There are rollers on the rear shaft, a caterpillar is stretched between the shafts, it can be made of belts or plastic strips.
Drive through an intermediate shaft in a Minsk tracked snowmobile. This snowmobile can travel at a speed of 50 km/h.
Snowmobile from a walk-behind tractor
It is not difficult to make a snowmobile from a walk-behind tractor, because the design of such a snowmobile is simpler and it does not matter which walk-behind tractor is used for this purpose.
Motoblocks use a gearbox drive, thanks to which 2 wheels rotate. In order to make a snowmobile from a walk-behind tractor, you need to replace ordinary wheels with wide rollers and install snow hooks on them.
You can also install tracked modules on drive shafts - these are 3 rollers on which the caterpillar is tensioned, the middle roller is the drive one, so it will turn out to be geared, and the other two are guides. These were the most popular snowmobiles made from motorcycles; in theory, you can make a homemade snowmobile from any motorcycle. For those who don’t want to redo anything, it’s better to immediately take a snowmobile and ride it; there are a lot of decent snowmobile models on the market now.
Next is a video on how to make a homemade snowmobile from an IZH motorcycle:
Homemade cars
I made a homemade snowmobile from an old Izh motorcycle.
This all-terrain vehicle was not conceived as a “workhorse”, but as a weekend toy – for walks through the fields near his native village. My father and I built it together. We already had experience: before that we built two snowmobiles.
We chose a design with two drive wheels at the rear and a ski at the front. The front wheel was abandoned due to difficulty in steering: poorly balanced, it tried to knock the steering wheel out of your hands, rested and slowed down the vehicle in loose snow. They also abandoned the differential: when driving on snow, it is not needed, and we do not drive on public roads.
The basis of the design of the all-terrain vehicle was the frame of the Izh motorcycle. An additional part of the frame was made from angle and inch pipes. To ensure rigidity, sheet metal gussets were welded. A part of the frame from the Voskhod was welded in front to relieve the load on the steering column bearings - after all, when driving over uneven surfaces, the load on them is considerable.
The engine chosen was from a motorized stroller - high-torque, simple and practically indestructible. In addition, the possibility of starting with a starter and the presence of a forced air cooling system were captivating.
The muffler was made from original pipes and a resonator from a Zhiguli. Of course, such a scheme contradicts the theory of exhaust of a two-stroke engine, but in practice this turned out to be not so significant.
Transmission elements were borrowed from decommissioned agricultural machinery. The rear axle and intermediate shaft are mounted on self-aligning bearings. To tension the chain, longitudinal holes were made in the frame. The overall gear ratio is 1:9, which allows the snowmobile to move confidently with two adult passengers in the trunk! Speed on dense snow is about 40 km/h.
The cameras are from the 1PTS-9 tractor trailer. The longitudinal belts were cut from a conveyor belt, while the transverse belts were made from drive belts - thanks to their profile, they better serve as lugs. The wheels are 16˝ from the trailer, their design is simple. Six bushings are welded along the inner diameter of the wheel to attach a second pair of wheels for driving in deep snow (additional wheels have not yet been completed).
The ski was made from a sheet of duralumin. For better controllability, two 15x15 mm corners were screwed to it from below.
The controls were taken from the Izh motorcycle, the steering wheel was expanded to 1 m - for convenience. The windshield is from an Irbis snowmobile. There is an ammeter and a voltmeter on the instrument panel to monitor charging. The engine has a magneto. For driving at night, headlights and side lights are provided.
The snowmobile is currently being tested. Along the way, we eliminate a small drawback - the lack of reverse gear. Instead of the intermediate shaft, it is planned to install a reverse gearbox from the Ant scooter. We will replace the differential in it with a solid shaft. The drive sprocket of the rear axle and a disc brake from Izh will be installed on the shaft. The temporary absence of brakes does not in any way affect the performance properties; the snowmobile rolls up slightly: it stops almost immediately.
