Homemade moped: manufacturing features and video instructions

Tuning the appearance of a scooter is not only an improvement in the technical characteristics of the vehicle, including speed and power, but also giving it an individual style, due to which the owner can stand out from the crowd.

There are a lot of options for external tuning of a scooter. Among them there are both measures that do not require large financial investments and allow you to give the scooter your own style, as well as serious changes to components and structures, among which the most popular are the development of standard settings, putting them in order, cleaning, replacing worn parts, and so on. Such operations can be performed either by tuning professionals or on their own.

Types of tuning

The first type of scooter tuning is styling, that is, making changes to its appearance and design. Currently, there is a huge assortment of different parts for styling: lights on each side, frame fairings, turn signals, various body kit options, mirrors, parts for changing the frame structure and many other useful devices. Naturally, you can rebrand your appearance using such diversity with your own hands.

The second type of tuning is making changes to the engine and ignition system of the vehicle. This process includes increasing the volume and modernizing the cooling system.

The third type is changes relating to the scooter’s transmission and chassis. We include here tuning the brakes, gearbox, suspension, clutch, and variator.

And the process is completed by tuning the electrical systems. These measures can be accomplished by replacing the generator with a more powerful analogue or by changing the lighting.

How to make a homemade moped from a bicycle?

7 minutes Author: Sergey Morskoy 274

A moped, like a bicycle, is a very convenient vehicle. Moreover, it drives faster than its older brother, thanks to its built-in drive. The ability to move quickly without much effort – isn’t this the dream of every cyclist? It’s quite possible to bring it to life - equip your bike with a gasoline engine or an electric motor.

An assembled moped from a bicycle is a fairly common occurrence in rural areas or regional towns. It is there that they like to put innovative ideas into practice, in particular, to make nimble and economical transport out of an ordinary old bike. Have you noticed a similar interest in yourself? Then it's time to get down to business!

Scooter design

The main load-bearing structural element of the vehicle in question is the frame. This scooter part can be of several types: duplex (used in the production of maxi-scooters), stamped all-welded (currently extremely rare copies are equipped with such a frame), as well as open-type tubular, in most cases, made from light metal alloys.

The front part of the frame includes a suspension consisting of a linkage or telescopic fork, hydraulic shock absorbers, brakes, a steering column and a dashboard on which the controls are located. The middle part of the frame, located between the front shield and the seat, is equipped with a shelf for the feet of the person driving the scooter. A battery is often installed in this structural element, and in some models a fuel tank is also installed.

The rear of the frame houses the CVT engine module and suspension, and above the engine location is the luggage compartment, seat and fuel tank. In almost every modern scooter, the engine-variator-wheel unit is attached to the frame through an axle with silent blocks with one or more shock absorbers. Their number depends on the design features of the scooter.

The exception is maxi-scooters with large engine volumes. For example, in the T-Max model from the Yamaha concern, the engine is rigidly mounted on the frame, and the variator is a moving part of the rear suspension.

DIY moped from a chainsaw

Moped from a chainsaw - made by a craftsman with his own hands: photo and description.

In the last article we already looked at the step-by-step production of a moped from a Druzhba chainsaw, this time we’ll take a look at another homemade product - this is a mini moped from a Stihl-MS180 chainsaw. So, to build a homemade product you needed the following materials:

  • Chainsaw.
  • Square pipe.
  • Wheels from a walk-behind tractor.
  • Handlebar, fork, chain and sprocket from a bicycle.

The mini bike assembly process is shown in the photo. Trying on all the details.

Making a frame from a profile pipe.

Finalization of the leading star.

Video testing a homemade moped.

Mini bike after painting.

The result is such a simple and compact mini moped, all that remains is to install the fuel tank, a protective cover for the chain and make the brakes. The moped can easily carry an adult weighing 90 kg and accelerates to a speed of 30 km/h.

Tuning options

It's no secret that changes to the appearance of a scooter are made in order to give individuality to the exterior, as well as to make traveling on a scooter more comfortable. As already mentioned, tuning can be divided into several types: external and internal. Using the first option, changes are made to the characteristics of the vehicle, thereby improving its driving properties; in the second case, they give the appearance additional elegance and uniqueness.

One of the easiest options for updating the exterior of a scooter is painting the frame. For example, the color of a scooter has long lost its original shine and charm and needs updating. The painting process will allow you to both update the color and replace it with something more suitable to your style. It is recommended to use an aerosol can during the painting process. If you couldn’t find the right color in a spray can, then you can do the job using a regular brush. If the scooter is painted in several layers of paint, there should be a break of at least a quarter of an hour between applying each layer.

At the end of the work, you should think about coating the frame with a special varnish, as well as polishing the finished surface. In addition, at the very end of the work on tuning the appearance of the scooter, you should think about pasting the frame with a variety of stickers, which can also add individuality.

Crossbike

It may not always be clear to a beginner how a motocross motorcycle differs from an enduro motorcycle. This is due to the fact that cross-class models often contain the word “enduro” in their names. In fact, the differences are quite large. A motocross motorcycle is intended only for motocross riding, so it does not have turn signals, headlights, panniers, in a word, everything that easily breaks and falls off when dropped. Such a motorcycle can be registered as sports equipment and does not require the pilot to have a category A license, however, it cannot be ridden around the city, and it must be transported to the motocross using another vehicle.

A powerful frame is one of the scooter styling options

In order to change the styling of the scooter, you can try to make a powerful frame. To do this, you will need to dismantle the wiring and trim, and weld metal spacers between the glove compartment and the steering column. They can be made from ordinary water pipes. In addition, you can remove the unnecessary plastic parts, in your opinion, and replace them with more suitable ones in style, which can give the scooter a breathtaking look. Some craftsmen manage to make a solid structure from the tail part of a scooter. This tuning allows the scooter to look like a real sports motorcycle.

As in the issue of car tuning, you can resort to replacing disks. However, such DIY work can result in increased management problems, since balancing new disks is very problematic. An excellent alternative in this case is to change the color of the old discs. This tuning looks no less original and impressive. And the technology of work does not differ significantly from the technology of painting plastic frames.

Backlight

An excellent option for adding individuality to your scooter is to install additional lighting. The most common type of implementation of such an event is the installation of LEDs. The main positive point in this process is the minimum energy consumption that is necessary for the operation of the diodes. They can also be mounted on wheels. And on the dashboard, and even on the headlights. The LEDs under the bottom of the scooter look no less original. At night, they can be used to additionally illuminate the road. And it will be easier for other road users to see the scooter rider.

A good option for external tuning is to replace the front headlight with a more advanced and brighter one, which together with the installed LEDs will look very impressive. Many scooter owners immediately after purchasing a vehicle try to replace the factory mirrors with darkened or tinted counterparts.

To summarize, I would like to note that the option of making changes to the appearance of the scooter depends on the financial component and imagination of the owner of the scooter. In any case, this process can be turned around, since tuning a scooter is a field for implementing the most sparkling ideas and plans, which very often become the founders of new trends in styling.

There is no need to be afraid of experiments, especially now, when you can find any structural element or part on store shelves. But you shouldn’t forget about a sense of proportion.

Main parts of a moped

First, let's look at the main parts of this technique. In other words, let's take our future scooter apart, so to speak, and find out its main elements so that making a moped is easy.

Main moped components

It is clear that without a good engine you cannot go far on a scooter. In this case, it is usually installed on the D-6 power unit. Recently, chainsaws have also become very popular, from which a homemade moped is made. In the video instructions you can see in detail how to do this. Chainsaws will be discussed in more detail below.
