Scooters
Scooters Scooters Baotian
Recently, Chinese-made scooters continue to conquer the motor market. Despite the fact that most of these scooters fail approximately on the second or third day of operation, nevertheless, with each season, the supply of Chinese goods to the markets only increases.
It cannot be said that the Chinese produce only bad goods. However, not all high quality scooters come to the markets.
Still, no matter what quality the scooters are, since they are entering the markets, it means that there is apparently a demand for them. This is not to say that absolutely all Chinese scooters are bad. Watching the process of how they are assembled and disassembled, you can see that they are not so bad at all. So it is possible to purchase a Chinese-made scooter, but you should be careful and attentive to details.
Among all Chinese scooter manufacturers, it should be noted that the “Baotian” brand is one of the best in the production of equipment. Scooters of this brand are produced of fairly high quality, and approximately 95% of their quality is absent. So you can safely purchase these scooters without unnecessary fears.
Unfortunately, this brand is not very well known in Russia, since supplies are focused mainly on European countries. The “Baotian” scooter models offered in Europe are most widespread in Germany and the UK. Having high build quality, they are able to compete with other European manufacturers of similar equipment. Based on the results of experiments using these scooters, we can conclude that they are no worse than European ones.
The first thing that catches your eye when purchasing is the appearance. The scooters have an interesting design and high-quality finish. Plastic parts, for example, are made conscientiously and look good. Operation of the Baotian scooter does not require frequent repairs or replacement of any parts. They can easily go at a speed of 70 km/h, after removing the speed limiters and proper running-in. They also have high maneuverability and compactness, which makes it easy to move in urban environments. Almost every scooter is equipped with an alarm system that can prevent theft. High-quality scooter headlights ensure safe movement on it at night and well illuminate the path.
To date, the Baotian company that produces these scooters is the only Chinese company that provides a guarantee for its products.
Design
All Umc Baotian models have a modern but laconic design, which clearly follows the imitation of leading Italian and Japanese mopeds. Modifications have slight differences in appearance.
UMC Baotian bt49qt 9
A narrow scooter with a classic seat shape. The headlight with a halogen lamp is small, oval in shape. Standard size tires (front 3.5-10, rear 3.5-10). Colors: red, blue, yellow, silver and metallic beige.
UMC Baotian bt49qt 9 T1 (Classic)
The difference in design from the previous model is only in the wide triple headlight, lowered onto and having a V-shape.
UMC Baotian bt49qt 9 R1/R3 (sprint)
The headlight in this modification is “planted” in the shape of a tulip. A pair of red beacons have been added under the steering column. New colors have appeared - silver-blue and silver-burgundy.
UMC Baotian bt49qt 12D
A grille has appeared at the front, giving the scooter an aggressive look. The wheelbase has been increased by 100 mm compared to previous models. The width and length of the scooter have been increased.
UMC Baotian bt49qt 12E1 (elite)
The scooter is equipped with alloy wheels. The wheels are larger (front 120/70-12, rear 130/70-12). At the front there are large double lens headlights with krypton lamps.
UMC Baotian bt49qt 12F1
Blue, red, red or black Elegance with alarm. It has double lens headlights - much larger than other Baotian scooters.
UMC bt49qt GMG 20A2/20A3 (Baotian sport and sportpro)
50 cc scooter, available in red and black. Unlike previous modifications, the discs are painted the same color as the entire body. It is a complete analogue of the Italian Aprilia scooter.
UMC Baotian bt49qt 2C (respect)
The most “pot-bellied” version of the Chinese scooter. Interestingly, only the length of the model is increased (1965 mm). The width is the same as other modifications, but it seems larger due to the fact that the Respect is lower than its brothers.
UMC Baotian bt49qt 2 B6
Large-wheeler, shod with 16-inch tires. Available in a stylish black color, cast silver wheels. Length increased to 1980 mm.
UMC baotian bt49qt 7 and 11
A couple of the neatest modifications of the Baotian scooter. The “chip” is the reduced width and a small single round headlight. These scooters look very European.
Flaws
- A fragile facing plastic that immediately cracks when dropped or collided.
- The matte paint on the facing plastic peels off after just a couple of months.
- Low speed (maximum 40-50 50 km/h depending on modification).
- The kick starter handle springs off easily (although spare parts will not be difficult to find at any motorcycle store).
- Poor build quality, gaps between parts become too large over time.
- The standard speedometer has a large error (up to about 40 km/h it displays accurately, but after that it gives a deviation of +7-10 km/h).
- Standard tires perform poorly in cold weather (behaves like hard plastic).
- The generator is not protected and is quickly flooded with water from puddles.
- Non-separable dashboard, which complicates the task of replacing individual parts (for example, switches).
- The rear view mirrors are poorly secured; it is better to fix them more securely, otherwise they will move or even fall off on the road.
- The built-in alarm “eats” a lot of energy (if you leave it running for 2-3 days, it will completely drain the battery).

Engine
The Chinese cars we are considering have 4-stroke, single-cylinder 139QMA (GY6) engines. All modifications come with 50 cc engines, except for the UMC Baotian BT151T-2B6 - this is the most powerful 150 cc horse. The Sport and Sport Pro models have variations - in addition to 50 cc engines, you can choose a moped with an engine capacity of 72 cm3. Horsepower of UMC Baotian scooters can range from 4.5 to 9.
The GY6 engine is common and easy to find in parts stores (disassembled or fully assembled). But if necessary, it can be replaced with analogues. A motor identical in parameters, for example, is Kymco (KL 10, KL 25).
Brake system
All but two modifications have disc brakes (front and rear). The system is alert - it responds instantly to the driver’s “orders”. There is no need to apply strong force to the handle - light pressure is enough for a quick and complete stop. From the model range, only UMC Baotian BT49QT-20A2 and 2C stand out, in which only the front system is disc, and drum brakes are installed at the rear, made integral with the wheel hub.
Frame
All Chinese scooters have a sore spot - plastic and frame. The latter is made of too soft metal, so it does not withstand intensive use. Although the passport states a decent maximum load (up to 150 kg), in fact, when using the scooter by a massive driver (or transporting heavy luggage, riding with a passenger), the frame will sag. It is better to strengthen it in advance (weld metal patches on the joints) so that there are no annoying breakdowns on the road.
Suspension
The suspension is made the same for all UMC Baotian models. Two powerful rear shock absorbers guarantee comfort when moving, including on country roads and gravel. Large ground clearance allows you to successfully overcome any obstacles encountered along the way.
Transmission
The design of the variator is simplified as much as possible. It consists of V-shaped half pulleys (driver and driven) and a trapezoidal belt.
