The wheels of an IZH motorcycle consist of a base (hub), a metal rim and connecting steel elastic spokes. Hub material: aluminum alloy. The steel brake drum is cast on the right side, and the splined part is located on the same side. If the front wheel is fitted with splines, the gear of the speedometer drive gear is put on, if it is the rear wheel, then the splines are connected to the driven sprocket of the main gear. The bearing housings have been prepared. A spacer is provided between the ball bearings. On the left side the bearing is protected by an oil seal. On the right, the speedometer drive or the driven star of the main gear are protected in the form of an oil seal with seals.

07/20/2013 the motor was assembled. tested on the road. The rubber fit snugly. When assembling the suspension, ONLY standard motorcycle parts were used, no modifications by welding, files, grinders, adding washers, etc. nothing was done, nothing rubs, everything is within acceptable limits, but in some places on the verge. Recommendations when installing the rear wheel 120/90 - R18: 1. adjust the mounting ear of the intermediate rear brake lever (the bushing on the right “horn” of the pendulum) slightly to the rear, about one centimeter, in this case you will have to replace the linkage between the intermediate lever and the pedal with a more long 2. keep an eye on the corrugations of the chain, the bottom one got caught during installation - the solution is to turn the corrugation around its axis (without removing the chain) 180 degrees, because corrugations, even new ones, have a slight longitudinal curvature. 3. the wheel has to be installed together with the snail - it won’t fit any other way. result of the experiment: I officially declare: the maximum tire size that can be installed on the rear wheel of an IZH Planet motorcycle is 5 without any modifications 120/90 - R18
PS special thanks to alekseimor' for the correct hint
I purchased new tires and chose the tread specifically the same as from the factory. The tires came with tubes, which of course makes me happy.
The reason for this was that once while riding with a friend in this damn jalopy, my rear wheel broke)). I guess from old age.
Since I was changing the tires, I replaced the wheel bearings, the flipper (rim tape), and removed the eight wheels a little.
How to decipher the markings of motorcycle tires?
Any motor tire has a lot of information on the sidewall about its properties, purpose and, of course, size. We will need to figure it out and then compare the readings with the table. You can learn more about the labeling of motorcycle tires from our previous article.
As a rule, the main marking on the side of the tire looks like this: 120/80 R16 59S. This is the so-called metric marking. Let's look at it in more detail:
- 120 – profile width from edge to edge of the tread, expressed in millimeters.
- 80 – profile height, expressed as a percentage.
- R – radial type of design.
- 16 – diameter of the landing area. This indicator must correspond to the same diameter of the wheel rim on which the tire will be put on.
- 59 is the load index, or the maximum weight that a tire can withstand without loss of performance. We look for it in the table:
Tire load index | |||||||
40 | 140 | 53 | 206 | 66 | 300 | 79 | 437 |
41 | 145 | 54 | 212 | 67 | 307 | 80 | 450 |
42 | 150 | 55 | 218 | 68 | 315 | 81 | 462 |
43 | 155 | 56 | 224 | 69 | 325 | 82 | 475 |
44 | 160 | 57 | 230 | 70 | 335 | 83 | 487 |
45 | 165 | 58 | 236 | 71 | 345 | 84 | 500 |
46 | 170 | 59 | 243 | 72 | 355 | 85 | 515 |
47 | 175 | 60 | 250 | 73 | 365 | 86 | 530 |
48 | 180 | 61 | 257 | 74 | 375 | 87 | 545 |
49 | 185 | 62 | 265 | 75 | 387 | 88 | 560 |
50 | 190 | 63 | 272 | 76 | 400 | 89 | 580 |
51 | 195 | 64 | 280 | 77 | 412 | 90 | 600 |
52 | 200 | 65 | 290 | 78 | 425 | 91 | 615 |
S is an index of the speed at which a bike can move without losing stability, grip and other useful characteristics of the tire. The value is also in a special table:
The models in the top are arranged according to price/quality ratio. In the process of writing it, we relied on reviews from amateur bikers, professional tests, and were also guided by our own subjective opinion and many years of experience working with tires.
Speed index | Maximum speed, km/h |

B | 50 |
C | 60 |
D | 65 |
E | 70 |
F | 80 |
G | 90 |

This method of marking tires is followed by most manufacturers, but there are also those who prefer alternative types, where sizes are indicated in inches. For example, this one is 3.25H-19. Everything is simple here: 3.25 is the width of the tire, expressed in inches, H is the speed index, 19 is the bore diameter. Sometimes the inch designation can be used instead of the usual millimeter designation, for example, like this: 4.60/80 R16. There is a rather rare alpha system, created primarily for sports tourists. For example, this type MM90S-16, where: MM – profile width in inches (3.75), 90 – profile height in percentage; S – speed index, 16 – tire rim diameter.
Alpha marking | Width in inches |
MG | 2.75 |
M.H. | 3.00 |
MJ | 3.25 |
M.L. | 3.50 |
MM | 3.75 |
MN | 4.00 |
MP | 4.25 |
M.R. | 4.50 |
MS | 4.75 |
M.T. | 5.00 |
M.U. | 5.50 |
MV | 6.00 |
To make it easier for you to determine what an inch standard size corresponds to in the metric system and vice versa, we have prepared a comparison table for you.
Technical characteristics of Izh Jupiter - 5
It is worth noting that over the entire 20 years that this motorcycle was built, its concept remained unchanged. With each model, these motorcycles became, if not much, but still better than the previous one, and Jupiter-5 was no exception.
If you compare Jupiter-5 with Jupiter-4, then both were practically no different from each other in appearance, but still a couple of details were changed: the torque was increased, the power was slightly decreased. This “little” is 4 horsepower. The fourth model had 28, and the fifth 24 horsepower.
But he won in strength! In terms of design, the shape of the cylinder fins has changed. Other exhaust pipes have been installed. There were also a couple of modifications to this model - cargo and tourist. The first modification was equipped with a side trailer and a spare wheel. The second - a luxury version, did not have a stroller, but it was equipped with a fairing and leg arches.
Disadvantages of the IZH-P5 engine
- Loud in operation;
- Increased vibration;
- Oil sprays from the muffler;
- Long acceleration;
- High fuel consumption;
- Small resource;
- Strong return from kickstarter.
Loud operation has a negative impact on people around (interferes with rest), which causes corresponding reactions towards the motorcyclist.
Increased engine vibration is felt throughout the motorcycle, especially with your hands on the handlebars.
Oil splashes from the muffler, which, when driving, falls on the back of the driver or passenger. This disadvantage is eliminated by installing a stainless steel ladle of the appropriate diameter at the end of the exhaust pipe. The ladle should have a sector cut out in advance, which should be in the lower part when mounted with screws. This modification will prevent oil from getting onto the back, and the exhaust will be directed downward.
Long acceleration. Planet 5 with a sidecar takes longer to accelerate. The increased duration during acceleration is especially noticeable on a motorcycle with a sidecar.
High fuel consumption. The engine is not fuel efficient and the reason is primarily in the design of the two-stroke engine.
The resource is limited to an interval of 20-25 thousand km
Strong return from kickstarter. To prevent the kickstarter from hitting your leg, do not accompany the kickstarter with your foot when it returns to its original position. The impact on the kickstarter when starting the engine should be sharp and strong.
PS. Dear “Planetovod” motorcyclists! You can ask a question or add reviews and information on the weak points and shortcomings of the IZH-P5 motor in the comments.
The engine is practical and very reliable
The engine turned out to be very reliable and practical. The simplicity of the system and unpretentiousness made it easier not only to repair, but also to operate the motor. Having 175 cc per cylinder, it not only pulled a side trailer loaded to nowhere, but also developed a crazy speed of 120 km/h at that time. Compared to heavy motorcycles, it even gained 10 kilometers in speed. It also performs well at low temperatures.
Motorcycle design
Like many other Izh motorcycles, Jupiter-5 did not receive any special changes in design compared to the fourth Jupiter.
Soon after the release of Planet 5, the designers cheated and borrowed a couple of external elements from it. Namely: the first model released received the usual square-shaped dashboard, which included a turn signal, low-high beam, ignition switch and speedometer. After processing, one panel was divided into two parts: indicators were placed on the first, and a speedometer on the second.
The shape of the tank was also changed. Because of this, the new model received a longer seat, combined with a rear brake light. In conclusion, it should be noted that for its time, and even in the USSR, it was rightfully a branded motorcycle. Only there was no such term then. Everything changes.

Izh Jupiter - 5 one of the most popular motorcycles of its time
In 1985, the production of a new model of motorcycles, Izh Jupiter-5K and Izh Jupiter-5, began. When the designers developed this model, they tried to take into account as much as possible the comments of the owners of “Jupiters” of the previous generation (fourth).
Basically, all comments referred to poor electrical equipment, as well as the efficiency of the device. Izh Jupiter-5 is one of the most popular motorcycles of the USSR, and was produced from 1987 to 2008 in Izhevsk. Has a fair amount of resources. Reliable, well assembled. It was created as a middle-class motorcycle. Intended for any road surfaces and no surfaces at all. Because of this, it gained great popularity among residents of rural areas. This technique also has high maneuverability and acceptable dimensions. In addition, this one turned out to be economical and unpretentious.
Izh-Jupiter-5 was produced together with Izh-Planet 5 and competed with it. These two motorcycles are almost identical. They differed only in engines. “Jupiter” was equipped with a 2-cylinder engine, and “Planets” with only one. Due to this, the first device had more power.
Design Jupiter 4
The popularity of the motorcycle among rural residents was due not only to the above advantages, but also to its rather simple design, which consists of the following main components and assemblies:
- Engine. Clutch.
- Transmission.
- Carburetor.
- Two mufflers.
- Generator.
- Frame.
The design features of the motorcycle include the installation of a more powerful engine, the use of special rubber bands for shock absorbers to reduce engine vibration on the frame, and the travel of both wheels was increased to increase cross-country ability. For the first time, a 12-volt electrical circuit was used on IZ Jupiter 4. The optics and light signaling have also been improved.
The simple design of the motorcycle, as well as the traditionally broad unification of all models of the Izhevsk plant, including the IZH Planet 4, which ensured high availability of spare parts, made it possible to carry out repair work in rural conditions.
To increase the service life and reliability of the motorcycle, especially in dusty rural areas, it was necessary to perform timely maintenance. It is for such conditions that the plant has established a fairly small frequency: maintenance No. 1 - every 2000 km, maintenance No. 2 - every 4000 km.
