Review and technical specifications of Harley Davidson Street 750

When you hear the words “Harley-Davidson,” you immediately imagine a huge motorcycle, sparkling with chrome and growling with a loud exhaust, on which sits a strong bearded man in leather gear, and the Harley Davidson Street 750 fits this description perfectly. The only exception is that it is compact, technologically advanced and – horror of horrors! – equipped with a modern liquid cooling motor instead of the archaic “air vent”. This deviation from the canons, coupled with an unprecedented reduction in cubic capacity for an American motorcycle manufacturer (previously the smallest and cheapest was the Sportster 883) caused a whole storm in the motorcycle community. But there is also the Street 500, built on the same base as its 750 cc brother, but it is not officially sold in Russia.

Be that as it may, despite such a bold step, the Street 750 quickly won the people's love, and even the most conservative cruiser lovers gradually changed their anger to mercy. This motorcycle, assembled in India , turned out to be surprisingly good. Inexpensive by Harley-Davidson standards, stylish, reliable, peppy and modern , it is an ideal and almost universal motorcycle for all occasions, which will surely appeal to you if you like retro style.

Design

Any Harley in appearance is a real work of art, in which everything is verified down to the smallest detail, right down to the manufacturer’s logo on the bolt heads. This fully applies to the Harley Street, although it still looks more modern than other Harley-Davidsons, except the V-Rod. Its design can be described as neo-retro - a good old classic, slightly modified according to the current ideas about fashion in the world of motorcycles.

Specifications

Refusing to install a classic air-cooled engine with a cylinder angle of 45 degrees, Harley-Davidson used developments from the engine of the V-Rod model. The remaining technical characteristics correspond to the concept of a modern cruiser, and they are, admittedly, good.

Engine

The 750 cc liquid-cooled V-twin with a cylinder angle of 60 degrees produces 53 hp. and 64 Nm of torque , comparable to some liter Japanese cruiser. The engine has lows, mid-speeds too, but in the upper range it “deflates”. Developing a top speed of 177 km/h , the Street 750 accelerates to 100 km/h in 6 seconds , and the dynamics do not leave it up to 130-140 km/h.

Transmission

The modern 6-speed transmission works as smoothly as a Swiss watch, and even without the “clumsy” shifting characteristic of American motorcycles and accompanied by a powerful kick of iron on iron. The gear ratios in the gearbox are ideally selected, the gears are moderately long, and already at 60-70 km/h you can engage fourth.

Chassis and brakes

Forget about alloy frames - just good old steel , and the most standard suspensions in the form of a telescopic fork in the front and two DualShocks in the rear. The Street Rod has much more interesting suspension, but the basic modification has what it has. No adjustments are provided, except for the preload of the rear shock absorbers. The brakes can be called quite good, but this is mainly the merit of the ABS system , since 1-piston calipers and one brake disc each front and rear do not add efficiency to the system.

Electronics

Harley Davidsons have always had minimal electronics, with the exception of touring models like the Electra Glide and Road Glide. Nobody began to stuff the most budget model in the line with electronic auxiliary systems, and this is for the better - the simpler, the more reliable.

Weight and dimensions

The curb weight of the Street 750 does not exceed 220 kg - a very modest figure by the standards of cruisers. And subjectively, the bike seems even lighter, it’s very easy to move it and roll it around the parking lot with your feet, since thanks to the center of gravity shifted down, the weight is almost not felt. Thanks to this, Harley Street is perfect even for short and not very strong motorcyclists.

Controllability

Maneuverability is one of the main advantages of this motorcycle. Harley-Davidson has created an almost perfect city bike that looks like a cruiser and handles like a modern road bike. The motorcycle obeys the steering wheel perfectly, quickly picks up speed and brakes tolerably. 's no exaggeration to call it one of the best-handling cruisers in the world .

Fuel consumption

During a quiet ride, fuel consumption will not exceed 5 liters , and in the city it can increase to 6.5-7 liters . Overall it remains moderate, and even the small teardrop-shaped fuel tank with a volume of 13.1 liters does not spoil the picture. A power reserve of 200+ kilometers is large enough for any purpose, and even more so for urban conditions.

This was the most controversial test drive. Never before has a motorcycle on test given me so many conflicting expectations. It all started with the fact that, thanks to a complex confluence of stars, the Harley-Davidson company invited me to test the Street 750. When I read about it, I thought they were joking, but they weren’t joking... Refusal on my part was unacceptable, he called himself a milk mushroom - get into the back. And so, when I went to receive this device, I was literally torn apart by a cacophony of thoughts. So, “in the blue corner of the ring” is the most budget-friendly, the smallest (in the most literal sense of the word), assembled not only not in Milwaukee, but not even in the USA, positioned as “for beginning motorcyclists, to introduce them to the spirit of Harley-Davidson " motorbike. And in the “red corner of the ring” is 120-odd kilograms of “mad stew”, 186 cm tall, with almost 20 years of motorcycle experience, who adores his hooligan sportbike, having firmly established stereotypes about all motorcycles in general and about Harley in particular. The meeting of these essences seemed to me to be a meeting of matter and antimatter, which, as we know from the course of quantum physics, inevitably leads to the collapse of the universal scale. The reality turned out to be so far from everything that I could imagine that it literally turned the world upside down.

For anyone interested, please see below under cat. Now I will tell you about all the shortcomings, of which there were very few, except for one, which greatly affects the overall conclusion from the entire test drive, and therefore about it at the end.

Firstly, this is still the most budget motorcycle in the Harley-Davidson line. And this, unfortunately, can be seen almost at first glance. No matter how they tried to convince me at the company’s representative office that in America Harley is a “people’s motorcycle” and not at all a premium segment, it is, unfortunately, impossible to change this stereotype in our realities. So you expect a certain level of quality from Harley. No, don’t think that oil is leaking somewhere or that something is unscrewing or falling off, in no case, everything is done to the level. This is still a world-famous company, and not AvtoVAZ. But. And this “but” is hidden in the details. The remotes are made of inexpensive plastic, a minimum of buttons (the turn signals are turned on and off the old fashioned way, everything is on the left remote control, without the now classic for Harley and BMW chips - the left turn signal is on the left remote control, the right one is on the right one, there is not even a “blink high beam” button ", low/far switch only). All the connecting blocks of the wires are not hidden at all under the gas tank, but are striking upon closer inspection; the brake hoses are ordinary rubber without any braiding. For example, I still didn’t have enough clock on the dashboard, it’s so easy, in addition to two daily mileage and one total mileage, to also build a clock into the LCD “odometer”, a worthless trifle, but it would be very nice. And it doesn't have ABS. That’s all, and I couldn’t find whether installation is possible (which, in general, is strange since, as far as I know, according to new safety requirements, all new motorcycles with a volume of more than 500 cc must be equipped with ABS). In general, as one of my friends put it, however, regarding cars: “When you get into a Renault Logan, you immediately understand that you got into a Renault Logan, and not into a foreign car.”

Secondly, what you hear when you start it is the sound. God forgive me, but I think Harley should be exempt from exhaust noise laws. I felt humanly sorry for the engineer who developed the exhaust system for this device. With all the praises about the philosophy and "signature sound" of Harley-Davidson, this poor soul must have cried tears of blood while developing "it." And after “this” was agreed upon, he had to hang himself, right on the first lamppost near the plant in Milwaukee. Want to understand what it sounds like? No way! There's just no way. My washing machine sounds louder and more aesthetically pleasing. The sound from the operation of the valves and gas distribution mechanism is louder than the exhaust. I have never heard the sound correlate so badly with the appearance. I want you to understand me correctly. This is not a mistake or a defect of the manufacturer, this is the reality of the modern world, when in order to comply (and therefore be able to sell in a given territory) to standards, you have to sacrifice, sometimes almost the most important thing. My dear reader, if you ever want to buy this motorcycle, I conjure you by all the gods and demons, in the name of Krishna, Shiva and the spaghetti monster, I beg you to immediately install a normal exhaust system upon purchase. I'm sure you'll find something in the Harley-Davidson catalog that you'll like both in terms of sound and style, and even if not, third-party manufacturers will definitely save the day. No motorcycle at all, and especially not a Harley, should sound like this. Forgive me for this overly emotional digression, but I could not remain silent. Let's go further.

Actually, everything is about the shortcomings. But further... Next we will turn the world upside down.

Let's start with the fact that it is very stylish. No, really, very much, and the judges of this were the beautiful half of humanity. Over the 4 and a half years that I have been working in my company, not a single colleague has asked her for a ride (when I once, while drinking a glass of tea, blurted this out to one of my old friends, she, laughing, answered something like “oh Can you imagine yourself next to your motorcycle? You both look like natural maniacs, it’s scary”). And then four of them said something like: “Oh, how cool, will you give me a ride?” Hand face. And in general, all the women I asked for their opinions about him unanimously said that he was very handsome. Do you still need proof? However, I almost agree with women. I received it in black for testing, and it looks very good. Compared to other Harleys, it has an even silhouette, that is, the tank is almost parallel to the ground, which, suddenly, does not spoil its appearance. Speaking of the tank, despite its external massiveness, its volume is approximately 9 liters (excluding reserve), which surprised me a lot, but this volume of fuel is enough for almost 200 km, which surprised me even more. The motorcycle as a whole looks finished; you almost don’t want to make any changes to its appearance, for fear of thereby disturbing the overall balance and smoothness of the picture. And it’s also very comfortable to sit on, at least for the driver. I thought that I would sit in some strange position, propping my ears with my knees, or indecently spreading my legs, but in fact, slightly leaning back, which I just had to get used to after sports, I felt very comfortable. The only thing I adjusted for myself was lowering the steering wheel slightly so that my hands lay comfortably.

My average travel time from home to work (from Lianozovo to Taganka) on my miracle sportbike is 30 minutes in quiet mode, or 18-22 minutes in aggressive mode (this is still within the bounds of decency and “without violating to the point of deprivation”, I will not mention the record time , so as not to traumatize the delicate psyche of local moralists). On Street, the same route was covered in 32 minutes. And what’s most amazing is that I drove off the road the same people that I usually drive off when driving my miracle. Apparently it's not the motorcycle... Anyway, Street is riding. It drives smoothly and thoroughly, pulls almost from idle to the cutoff. And there was one small pitfall hiding here. To drive at my usual rhythm, the engine has to be turned quite thoroughly, there is no tachometer, and the cut-off is implemented quite rigidly (apparently, when a certain speed is reached, the ignition is cut off for a couple of seconds). As a result, I almost got hit in the face with the steering wheel several times, and I still need to get used to understanding the proximity to the cutoff by hearing (more likely by vibrations). And it’s also quite powerful, and managed to accelerate all my 120-odd kilograms of crazy stew to 160 km/h (and this on a flat area, and not from some mountain). Yes, for a burnout you will most likely have to push him against the wall, and it is unlikely that he will be able to drift, but for this class this is not at all the main thing. In general, the engine pleased me with its thrust and power, which are more than sufficient for the urban cycle and not long-distance travel outside the city. There were also no complaints about the operation of the checkpoint. Sometimes, however, the neutral was not caught the first time, but on the second day dexterity came in this matter as well.

We need to talk about maneuverability separately. The Street is fantastically maneuverable. You almost don’t feel its weight under you, large steering angles and uniform thrust (with a certain skill) allow it to be screwed into simply fantastically narrow cracks. The full turning radius is indecently small. Having gone to a motorcycle gymkhana one day, I was simply amazed - passing those turns where on my miracle I sometimes needed more than one attempt to understand the trajectory and technique, on the Street I went through it smoothly, the first time and on pure intuition. And that was not the limit. For many motorcycle gymkhana regulars on choppers, the footpegs are almost a consumable, and they ride along the track, scraping them on the asphalt without hesitation. I, for obvious reasons, could not afford such luxury. But one time I specifically folded the left footrest (the exhaust pipe is located quite low on the right side and, “to avoid”, I did not experiment with right turns), moved my leg higher, and decided to check the maximum angle at which I can tilt the motorcycle in a turn and not overwhelm him at the same time. I was pleasantly pleased with the result. As a result of such maneuverability, where in city traffic more powerful motorcycles come off on straight and free sections, the Street climbs into the most impassable cracks and gaps, and a fairly wide steering wheel is not a hindrance at all, you just need to be able to work with this steering wheel.

And he also handles the road very well. When you enter a straight section of the road and pick up speed, you feel like a locomotive on rails. I never once had the feeling that the motorcycle was behaving capriciously regarding its trajectory. Where you look, you go, period. I remember my struggle with the “electric train” for stability, I expected that after 110 km/h the next “battle of the titans” or “how are you, you bastard, sausage” will begin. But there is no hint of anything like that. The steering wheel does not rattle or shake, side and head winds have almost no effect on handling. This is, of course, quite understandable, because the Street’s windage is significantly less than that of the “electric”, and the music, lights and fairings don’t weigh “half a ton” on the steering wheel, but I didn’t expect such a significant difference.

I also need to say about the lights, instruments and brakes. Everything is clear with light - it exists. Both the high and low beams are exactly what you expect - that is, you see exactly what you expect to see. In the catalog I also saw LED optics for it, it will probably be even better, comparable to the “Electric Train”. But I haven’t tried it, I don’t know. The instrument panel is ascetic: only a dial speedometer, two daily mileage, and total mileage, plus indicator lights integrated into the speedometer dial. As I said above, I did not have enough hours, but this is a subjective opinion. The readings of all instruments were easy to read at any time of the day in any lighting conditions, and in general the dashboard fits very harmoniously into the overall design. But the brakes were a bit lame. Before starting the test, I was warned that the main brake was the rear, and that was damn good advice. Do you want to brake quickly? Push in the back. Do you want to add more braking force or slow down before a traffic light or keep it from rolling down the hill? Push the front one. The opposite is true for my miracle sportbike. Break the rear wheel into a skid? No problem. And this, coupled with the lack of ABS, became the reason for several gray hairs on my head, when overly zealous pedestrians think that the motorcycle can stop dead in its tracks with just the power of thought. But then you realize that the brakes are, in fact, adequate to the engine and the bike, even with a reserve, and that it’s unlikely that anyone will drive it the way I do. I wanted to say something about the suspension, but there’s not much to say here. She works. It works exactly as it should, easily swallows small and medium-sized unevenness of Russian roads, mockingly ignores markings (except for the very blatant insanity of our road workers, like intermittent markings 2 cm high). There is nothing more to add about the suspension.

The technical side of the issue is over, all that remains are emotions and conclusions. And the emotions must be said to be the most positive. Street gives that same feeling of simple driving. It doesn’t have the pathos of a chopper, it doesn’t have the madness of a sportbike, it doesn’t have any special technology, it’s a kind of “faithful friend from next door.” This is a motorcycle for every day, just to ride, simple and at the same time stylish, economical and quite responsive, keeping up with the times and remembering its origins. It gives that almost forgotten feeling of just riding, riding not for the sake of a goal, not for the sake of adrenaline or self-affirmation, but for the sake of the process itself. I've always tried to find a musical style for every bike I've ever ridden. For the train it was classic Hard Rock (AC/DC - Highway to hell - I wanted to put it on endless repeat), for my miracle sport it was some kind of Power Metal, and for Street Reggie is best suited. You’re riding it, and you suddenly start humming something from Bob Marley, or Laid Back, or even Jah Division under your breath. You drive and smile. I want to drive it every day, ride and smile. In general, it is exactly as the manufacturer intended it. It was created for young people, like the first Harley-Davidson they bought, to “get into the brand”, in order to understand what Harley-Davidson is, and damn, it does it 146%. After a week of test driving, I got so used to it and rode with it that when I returned it, I was truly sorry to give it away, I wanted to keep it for myself. It was like parting with a dear friend with whom I was used to sharing my life...

But then emotions come to be replaced by reason. And the time has come for conclusions. And there is only one conclusion from everything that is written above. I would never buy a Street in my life! Even if they give it to me, I will sell it to hell. And you might be surprised that after all those flattering words above, I come to such a conclusion? But everything is simple, and this is the main “disadvantage” of this motorcycle, which I promised to reveal at the beginning of the review - it is small, very small. And I'm very big. It makes me look like an elephant on a children's bike. Yes, I drove it for a week and was happy like a schoolboy, yes, I flew between cars in traffic jams and discovered new limits for maneuvering, yes, I drove for my own pleasure and at my own pace every day and it gave me a smile, yes, I drove out of my lane everyone from the Goldwing to the Hayabusa (there was such a case, yes - the driver of the Hayabusa either didn’t know how to drive it, or was completely thinking about completely different matters than moving in the aisles), but I like it. But every time I looked into the eyes of other road users, I saw in them bewilderment mixed with a grin. And this is easily explained, the absurdity of what was happening caused laughter, like a classic caricature of a Hollywood farce, and somehow I was not used to associating myself with farce. And what conclusion could I actually draw from all of the above? That's right: this Harley and I are not made for each other, no matter how much we like each other. Sad, but true...

This conclusion should under no circumstances mislead anyone. If you are young, if your height is below 180 cm, you do not stand out for your obesity, and ideally, if you are still bearded (for a man, of course), you wear Ray-Ban glasses, and in your soul the words smoothie, iPhone and London evoke serious trepidation , and you have a little over half a million rubles (at the time of writing) to buy a two-wheeled friend, then this is the best choice! For the money, you won't find such comprehensive compromise in any respect. Yes, you will find a faster motorcycle, or more stylish, or more maneuverable, but you will not find everything in one set and for such a price (of course, we are talking only about new motorcycles, we are not even considering the secondary market, since for this we will have to take into account that the motorcycle being tested on the secondary market will have a completely different price).

PS Many thanks to Harley-Davidson for the opportunity to test drive. Yura Khvorostov for, once again, magnificent photographs. Special thanks to the motorcycle workshop “Dust Road” for providing invaluable assistance during the photo shoot.

Repair and tuning

Wide possibilities for customization have always been a strong point of American motorcycles. There are tons of aftermarket spare parts on sale, both original and from third-party manufacturers. The Harley-Davidson catalog alone is comparable in thickness to a weighty book.

Repair

If you wish, you can service the Street 750 on your own; there is nothing overly complicated in its design. But when purchasing a new motorcycle, the buyer receives a warranty, which will be lost if not serviced by an authorized dealer. And dealer prices are quite high.

Spare parts

Almost all spare parts are available at dealerships. Those that are not in stock can be ordered, and they arrive quite quickly. In addition, there is always Ebay and hundreds of foreign online stores where you can find everything you need.

Tuning

To say that there is a lot of tuning on the Street 750 is a gross understatement. There is not a lot of it, but a lot! You can replace everything, from mirrors and grips to deep modifications to the engine. Budget and imagination would be enough.

Motorcycle modifications

Russian dealers offer two modifications of the Harley Davidson Street 750, regular and modified , called Street Rod 750. The latter has a sportier and less old-fashioned appearance , a more powerful engine ( 68.4 hp versus 53 hp for Harley Street, the rev limit has been increased from 8000 to 9000) with reinforced suspension and a different seat, as well as a few other little things. The Street Rod 750 costs about 100 thousand rubles more than the regular Street 750, and is positioned as a motorcycle for those who like aggressive riding. There is also a version called the XG750R, also known as the Street Legal. This is a stylization of a retro racing bike from the first half of the 20th century, and very interesting! The Harley Davidson XG750 Street costs a little more than the basic version.

MY MOTORCYCLE

Recently, motorcycle companies have finally begun to target different age categories of people. And especially for beginner motorcyclists.

Japanese marketers were the first to come to this point - new “fours” began to appear in their new products in the lines of sports and road motorcycles, and today they are actively increasing their presence in this segment, preparing for the release of “three hundred”.

Basically, in practice, a young motorcyclist rarely changes the brand with which he began his motorcycle life. In this regard, Harley-Davidson designers began to worry that they also needed to create suitable models for young fans of the brand. They simply fear that, once behind the wheel of a Star Bolt or Kawasaki W800, novice riders will in the future prefer the heavy cruisers of these companies. This is quite expected, given that the quality of motorcycles from leading manufacturers today is equally high. And as a result, they created new models of motorcycles for young people.

Another reason for this step by Harley-Davidson is the lack of models in the line that a beginner could get behind the wheel of. Even the most compact Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster is not suitable for these purposes - it is still too heavy for a beginner.

One of the new products is the Harley-Davidson Street 750, specially created for young people. Despite the reduction in price of the model, which was done again to please young people, the designers managed to preserve the style inherent to the American motorcycle legend in the appearance of the Harley-Davidson Street 750. Belonging to the Harley-Davidson line is especially emphasized by the Dark Custom color, corrugated covers on the fork legs, magnesium alloy wheels and a round headlight. The middle part also looks quite impressive - a classic gas tank, a fairly large radiator, but at the rear the designers failed to maintain the style - the wing and optics look quite modern, which, however, does not spoil the overall appearance of the motorcycle. Well, as expected, the HD logo is on the gas tank.

Of course, whatever you say, you can see where the designers saved money - the clutch and front brake levers on the Harley-Davidson Street 750 are thinner than on all other Harleys. The paint, which looks great on parts of the body that face outward, in hard-to-reach and covered areas looks as if it was applied with a regular paint brush. The plastic elements are also poorly fitted, which does not apply to the control switches - they are made to last.

This motorcycle is big only in appearance, this is the conclusion you come to when sitting behind the wheel of a Harley-Davidson Street 750. You feel quite cramped in the seat - with a height of 700 mm in the saddle, the engineers should have moved the footrests further forward, because for tall drivers the landing will clearly seem uncomfortable - your knees will be located above the gas tank. There is no need to reach for the steering wheel handles; they are even a little closer than necessary. For some reason, the designers decided that the younger generation of buyers was mainly represented by people of not the most serious build, although, perhaps, they expected that at least half of the buyers of the new model would be fragile representatives of the fair sex.

However, despite some cramped conditions on the road, this does not in any way affect the handling of the Harley-Davidson Street 750 - the steering wheel is very informative and requires almost no effort to maneuver. Overall, the bike may feel very light despite its curb weight being a whopping 222kg - a respectable weight for an entry-level bike. At the same time, it cannot be said that the company’s engineers have reduced costs on the suspension - in terms of performance, it is not much different from the components installed on its older brothers. It may not be soft enough, but it is perfectly balanced. But the weak point of the motorcycle can be called the brakes - one floating disc and a two-piston caliper at the front and rear are clearly not enough to be able to stop quickly if necessary. To make an emergency stop, you will have to simultaneously squeeze the lever and press the brake foot with your foot.

As for the engine, we must pay tribute to the developers - like all Harleys, it is magnificent. This is a two-cylinder V-shaped 749 cc liquid-cooled Revolution X power unit with a cylinder camber of 60 degrees. Thanks to it, the motorcycle produces almost 53 horsepower and 53 Nm of torque on the dyno. This is more than enough for traveling on city streets and country highways. In general, novice motorcyclists will be able to appreciate the Harley-Davidson Street 750 motorcycle specially created for them, even more so. that its price also falls into the category of pleasant bonuses and in Russia will be about 400,000 rubles.

Advantages and disadvantages

The release of the Harley Davidson Street 750 divided Harley lovers into two camps. Some were delighted with him, pointing out the technical perfection of the newcomer, while others turned away contemptuously from the “dropsy” and small cubic capacity by cruiser standards. But practice shows that this model has more strengths than weaknesses.

Advantages

  • Affordable price . For a reasonable amount, anyone can join the club of owners of the most famous brand in the world.
  • Excellent maneuverability . The Harley Davidson Street 750 shatters the stereotypes that a cruiser must be heavy and clumsy.
  • A huge amount of tuning and spare parts, both original and not.
  • Economical . Thanks to the technologically advanced engine, the bike consumes fuel very economically, and, according to reviews from owners, it can easily digest even AI-92, although the manufacturer recommends using AI-95.
  • Good dynamics . And not just by cruiser standards! Top speed is low, but at the speeds most riders ride at 95% of the time, the Harley Street feels confident and there's always plenty of traction to spare on the right handlebar.

Flaws

  • Engine settings . The Harley Street engine likes to rev relatively high, higher than most cruisers. But this can only be a disadvantage in the eyes of the most stubborn cruiser lovers, accustomed to tractor traction at the bottom.
  • Passenger seat . In stock, it is an uncomfortable perch on which it will be difficult to sit for more than an hour.
  • Rigid pendants . The motorcycle loves good asphalt.

Test drive: How the legendary Harley-Davidson has changed

What is a Harley-Davidson motorcycle? A lot of chrome, a lot of weight, a lot of money - a lot of motorcycle. If we draw analogies with car brands, then this is the Bentley Flying Spur in terms of price, Cadillac Escalade in terms of the amount of chrome and Toyota Century in terms of old-school quality in one bottle. But the world is changing, and now KTM is releasing the younger Duke 200 and 390, followed by BMW with its G310. Everything is made in India. The Americans are not lagging behind and in 2014 they are launching a cheap (relative to other brand models) 750 cc Harley-Davidson Street, also produced in the country of rajahs and programmers. After 3 years, we are presented with the Street Rod - “added” in the technology and design of the Street. Entering the world of Harley has become more pleasant and comfortable.

Technique

Baby Harley finally got two brake discs at the front, so necessary for a city dweller (if only in Milwaukee they heard the prayers of Softail owners and installed two discs on them too). Beginners, who are most likely the main target audience, will also appreciate the presence of ABS.

The new engine - HighOutput RevolutionX, compared to the regular Street 750, has added a little in maximum power and torque.

Appearance

It’s unlikely that anyone could ever have any complaints about the design of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Street Rod was no exception. You can recognize the corporate style and continuity in it, and even if such a bike rushes past at a speed of 100 km/h, you will undoubtedly recognize it as a Harley-Davidson.

The color scheme adds brutality. You can choose from black, dark gray and military olive. No chrome or decoration, everything is stern and to the point.

Behind the wheel

From the first approach you feel the unexpected lightness of the motorcycle. The curb weight of the Harley-Davidson Street Rod is only 238 kg. Surely most owners of modern neoclassical and sport bikes are now grunting at our “everything” - for them, a weight of more than 200 kg with a 750 cc engine is “heavy cast iron,” but, within the framework of the genre in which Street Rod performs, this weight is not bad at all. The same goes for the low seat height and low center of gravity. For people with short stature, everything is great; pulling a heavy bike in a parking lot in the heat is still a blessing.

There was nothing on the dashboard except a speedometer and a small screen on which you can see the mileage, daily mileage and engine speed in order. The fuel level must be monitored independently; the motorcycle will only indicate with a light that it has reached the reserve level.

The first obvious drawback of the Street Rod, which cannot be ignored, is the location of the mirrors at the ends of the handle. While you look from the outside, it’s beautiful and stylish, but in traffic jams, between the rows, you get a false sense of unreal width. You brake, checking - but no, we pass with a reserve. Of course, the feeling of size is a matter of habit, which is difficult to develop in a week of test ride.

Another ergonomic flaw is the location of the exhaust pipe. A powerful heat source is located near the right leg and actively fries it to a “grilled leg” state. When stopping at traffic lights, you have to control yourself and put your foot further away, otherwise burns cannot be avoided. For those whose height is 190 cm and above, the problem looks funny, but they will have another nuance: the motorcycle is very small in height and dimensions, and with a height of more than 190 it will be uncomfortable to sit, and you will look like a hooligan who took away a child’s bicycle.

I was a little confused by the stiff suspension - any bumps and unevenness in the road are felt quite strongly. Getting into a pothole can result in a painful blow to the spine. In addition, the vibrations on the steering wheel are strong - after an hour or two behind the wheel, your hands become dry.

Dynamics

749 cc engine cm produces 65 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. Not to say that this is a lot, but if you move within the limits of traffic rules, then you will not experience a lack of engine. The low end of the engine does not impress with its “locomotive” quality, but starting from a standstill does not require a significant opening of the throttle.

The dynamics up to 100 from a standstill are higher than most road cars, so there is no particular inconvenience when starting in traffic; you can watch the traffic exclusively in the rear-view mirrors.

I would also like to note the velvety sound of the exhaust - you don’t expect anything special from a small and cheap 750, but it seems that the engineers have worked a little on the sound.

The handling of the motorcycle is also in perfect order - it is responsive to the driver’s commands, stable in long turns and when braking. Girls will be pleased with the soft clutch - everything switches without any extra effort. The steering angle is large, so coupled with the low weight and low center of gravity, maneuvering at low speeds and in tight parking conditions does not cause any inconvenience.

Price

The cost of a motorcycle in classic black color starts from 660 thousand rubles. For a bike in a different color you will have to pay another 20 thousand. Whether it is expensive or not - everyone decides for himself. For those who have already fallen ill with the Harley virus and want to try something simpler first, this is just right.

Owner reviews

Moved to Street 750 from Shadovy 1100, heaven and earth. It feels like I have been transported from the last century somewhere into the future. I forgot about the choke, cleaning the carbs with synchronization, regularly tightening everything that came loose on a 20-year-old motorcycle. Here I just bought it and went, that’s it, only storage in the garage. In two seasons it has never failed, it was serviced by the officials, because it is guaranteed. Service, by the way, is expensive, but if you don’t need a guarantee, you can forget about it. Tuning in bulk, costs much less than older Harleys. Vadim, Moscow, Harley Davidson XG750 Street '2019.

The ideal city motorcycle. Before him, I drove both a Warrior 1700 and a VTX 1800, since I don’t like anything other than cruisers, but in the city it was always crowded and at times uncomfortable. Street is the best choice for a biker who rides around the city 90% of the time, and not on long journeys, steers like a bull, crawls into any hole, pushes powerfully, leaving all the cars behind. I haven’t tried long-distance driving, I think it will be OK, but nothing more. In the reviews on the Internet, everything is correct; in general, they say that the spender is lively and nimble. Alexander, Kazan, Harley Davidson Street 750 Custom '2017.

A very friendly spender, suitable for beginners, and won’t let old people get bored either. There's plenty of low-end, no matter what they say about its engine, it's a comfortable cruiser on the highway at 110-120, but at 130-140 the vibrations start to get boring and the dynamics drop sharply. The seat is comfortable, the stock seat is oak, but can be altered or replaced. Dmitry, Sevastopol, Harley Davidson Street 750 Custom '2019.

Street 750 from Harley-Davidson: custom with character from Buell

Despite the fact that people don’t ride motorcycles in winter due to the weather, this time is the best time for modifications and customization of their iron horses. The winter of 2016–2017 was no exception, when motorcycle enthusiasts took the Street 750 model from Harley-Davidson of the unique Dark Custom line as a basis.

It took four months for lovers of unusual motorcycles to turn a standard Harley-Davidson Street 750 Dark Custom bike into something original and exclusive. They created a spectacular street that absorbs and exudes the best qualities of Buell.

The custom was based on the idea that a motorcycle should be interesting, and not only from the outside. So the bike was adapted for driving around the city, achieving ideal handling and maneuverability. This was made possible by installing high-performance 380mm Buell ZTL brakes. In addition, the custom one has a rear caliper and lightweight wheels from the same manufacturer.

To improve the efficiency of the braking system, the front fork offset was increased, which made it possible to transfer more of the load to the front axle. Thanks to the use of side covers made of aluminum alloy, it was possible to reduce the weight of the bike, and changing the shape of the fuel tank made the motorcycle more comfortable, adapted for use in city traffic: the recesses located on the sides are designed for knees.

Yes, there are a number of elements that remain untouched and have not been changed. We are talking about the power unit, frame and part of the exhaust system, thanks to which it was possible to achieve a luxurious sound. All other elements of the bike's design have undergone changes, been replaced or modernized.

The goal of modifying the Harley-Davidson Street 750 was to create a beautiful urban custom with improved performance characteristics and a braking system.

The custom has a street dragster design, which emphasizes its purpose - a city bike, ideal for racing on straight, long tracks. To create the custom, exclusively original factory components from Harley-Davidson and Buell were used.

The wheels, brakes (calipers, discs), and front and rear shock absorbers were taken from the XR 1 200 from Harley-Davidson. The fork, front fender, and front and rear optics installed on the custom are from Night Rod. The swingarm and exhaust are stock designs but have been redesigned.

The customizers also used spare parts of their own production: front crossbars, clip-ons, seat and handles. These are all unique parts, as are the tail section, swingarm and side covers of the bike.

It should be noted that most of the ideas were introduced into the design of the motorcycle on the fly. There was no clear understanding of what the device would be like after completion of the modifications. So, during the discussion, the idea came up to make and use aluminum side covers.

The customizers moved the ignition switch. It is now located under the left side cover. This is more of a desire to make it look like old-school style bikes. Moreover, it is currently a fashion trend.

The pulleys, both driving and driven, remained standard with some modifications. The fuel tank filler cap and the ignition coil cover are individually designed.

Street 750 as a city cruiser

Harley Davidson advertises the Street 750 as a city cruiser and it really is great for the big city. It moves quickly between traffic lights, is nimble enough for heavy traffic, and turns with minimal effort. He drives quickly and smoothly. The control levers are quite high, which makes it possible to “put” the motorcycle at a fairly acute angle when turning. The only downside to its ground clearance is that its exhaust pipe is lower than the running boards. Overall the bike is compact and light with surprisingly comfortable suspension, especially for guys my size.

Regarding the 749cc liquid-cooled Revolution X V-Twin engine, a friend of mine said:

When you grab the right handle well, you first get the lower limit of torque, which then moves into the middle range. The power then levels out just before the rev limiter engages.

On the stand he said:

The Street 750 produces a respectable 52.89 hp. at 7,900 rpm and 53.36 Nm at 6,400 rpm, however, the torque curve was remaining flat all the way through the varied rev range.

The Street 750's engine is quite fiery. Fuel is supplied via a 38mm Mikuni throttle body. The Revolution X V-Twin engine is very well mounted and balanced. Engine vibration is small. It has a chain drive. If you periodically give the engine a large number of revolutions and drive all day, even with frequent stops, the rear cylinder head will begin to release heat into the space between the seat and the tank. The 6-speed gearbox and motor are mounted side by side, which gives the bike the right center of gravity and also makes the transmission perform very well.

I was surprised by the gearbox. Shifting on the Harley Davidson Street 750 is smooth and quiet. The gear ratio is well taken into account. The clutch performance is also good. It interacts with the gearbox without unnecessary fuss and noise.

Another area that surprised me about the Street 750 was its suspension. When I got on the bike with a friend of my size, I figured it would "fatigue" the shock absorbers. But the reality turned out to be completely opposite. Thanks to the motorcycle's suspension, our ride was comfortable. At the rear there are two shock absorbers with adjustable spring preload, and at the front there is a 37 mm telescopic fork. They cushion well.

Regarding the comfort of the driver's seat on the motorcycle, my friend said that his knees were higher than the low tank and that he had the impression that he was sitting on top of the motorcycle, and not on it. He called the distance to the instruments quite acceptable. And, summing up, he put it this way:

To put it simply, the Street 750 looks big, but it really isn't.

I also agree with him on this, since for people of the same build as me the motorcycle is not very comfortable. I also sat on it somehow too high. When driving at high speeds on the motorway, the Café-Racer-style windscreen vibrates unpleasantly.

FAQ

  • Is the Harley Street series really assembled in India? True, but there's nothing unusual about it. Many models from BMW, KTM and other major companies are also produced in this country. The main thing is quality control, and it is very strict.
  • Are the nuts and hexagons on it also inch? Depends on the market. Models officially sold in Europe, including Russia, use metric nuts and bolts.
  • How is he going long distance? Great, but it will most likely be a bit cramped for two people with a passenger. Although some people ride all over the world in “400” cars, so it’s all individual.

Conclusion

Harley Street is significantly different from all its brothers in the model range. Modest cubic capacity, Indian assembly, liquid cooling of a revving engine by cruiser standards... But who said that this is bad? With this model, HD has opened the way to the world of leather and chrome for those who cannot afford a bike for a couple of million rubles. And high reliability, style and good technical characteristics make the Harley Davidson Street Custom interesting not only for beginners, but also for experienced bikers who are not chasing cubic capacity.

Review of the Harley-Davidson Street 750 2015 motorcycle

The first all-new Harley-Davidson bike since 2001.

Even for those who have learned and become accustomed to Japanese bikes, the new Harley-Davidson Street 750 (the first new Harley since the 2001 V-Rod) will fit without any problems. All six gears shift smoothly and quietly, and after about the third you can do without a light clutch. The steering is quick and light, and the ergonomics are close to ideal if you're not too tall. No one was expecting a drag racing bike, so no one should be disappointed. However, the new liquid-cooled V-twin engine performs great straight from idle, without any lag or stumbling, and the engine is flexible enough to cruise at speeds of 55-65 kilometers per hour in top gear without any problems.

The prototype of the new Street produced 57.6 horsepower on the dynamometer at almost 8000 rpm. This is 11 more horses than the 883 Sportster . This makes up for the 883's more low-end torque, and gives an idea of how the new Street 750 stacks up against the old Sportster. The Sportster is equipped with an outdated two-valve engine with a camshaft in the cylinder block, a piston stroke longer than the cylinder diameter and a compression ratio of 9:1. The new Street is a modern motorcycle equipped with a new four-valve, single-cam engine with a compression ratio of 11:1 and a bore-to-stroke ratio of 85 x 66 millimeters.

A 60-degree camber angle instead of 45 degrees allowed the gas tank to be conveniently and compactly mounted above the 38mm Mikuni throttle body.

When you first see the Street 750 in the flesh, what strikes you most is how small the bike is. Harley has always made the seat as low as possible on its entry-level bikes (all of its bikes, to be honest), but this time the manufacturer literally shrunk the entire bike down. The official HD website states that the curb weight of the Iron 883 is 255 kilograms; Street 750 - 218 kilograms. In fact, it's a huge difference that you feel every time you take the bike off the stand, accelerate and brake, and turn into a turn.

Widely spaced (at an angle of 60 degrees) and shorter cylinders allowed everything to be placed lower and more compact. Simply put, the guys from Milwaukee have created a modern and compact motorcycle. This is also a motorcycle that needs valve adjustments every 15,000 miles.

A version of the motorcycle in a spectacular dark red Mysterious Red Sunglo color scheme.

Now for the bad news. To make the Street 750's price as attractive as possible, the manufacturer had to make some sacrifices in finishing. The yoke molding looks like it was just pulled out of a sand mold, painted black and slapped onto the bike. The last time we saw this was on the Chinese Cleveland Heist - not the most pleasant comparison. While on some of their Harley-Davidson motorcycles they go to great lengths to hide all the cables and wires, on the new Street 750 the designers seem to have deliberately left everything in plain sight. Perhaps they will release a Dark Custom Trim Kit? Perhaps, but is it fair?

Finding faults is part of the purpose of a review like this, but if this is your first bike you'll almost certainly notice none of it. Overall, the Street 750 has an understated, narrow and stylish appearance. Its striking lines, especially at the gas tank, are reminiscent of the old Yamaha Radian, which was also a great little city bike.

It’s unlikely that anything good can be written about the traverse and the suspension of electrical wiring, so we won’t write anything. Wait though! The fork lock is built into the ignition switch!

“Urban” is the word that perfectly describes this new product from Harley-Davidson. “On the street and for the street,” say the advertising slogans on the manufacturer’s official website, convincing potential buyers of the availability of this new model.

A driver with a height of about 170 centimeters and a weight of approximately 70 kilograms will be very comfortable behind the wheel of a bike. Tall bikers may find it a little cramped, but not critical.

Another big jump in city riding is 89 millimeters of rear suspension travel, which is about 35 millimeters more than the Iron 883. And the Street 750 soaks up most bumps rather than having the rear tire hit them. Speaking of the rear tire, it's a custom-sized Michelin Scorcher 140/75 R15 with unusually high sidewalls, which is probably what the designers asked for. However, Mark Daniels, lead designer of the Street 750, said the tire was approved by the design department. Either way, the bike moves deftly wherever the rider points its 37mm fork tubes, and even likes to be handled hard like some naked sport bike.

The suspension cannot be called advanced, but it is well calibrated, although on bumpy sections of the road at more or less decent speeds it may lack damping. There's just enough cornering clearance to have fun, but not so much that you forget you're riding a Harley after all. The brakes have the "old-fashioned" version of ABS, meaning the 292mm front disc is simply not strong enough to lock the wheel. There is no real anti-lock braking system.

The agonizing wait is finally over - the first new Harley-Davidson since 2001 turned out to be a decent bike.

The seat turned out to be extremely comfortable, soft and conveniently shaped, but this feeling only lasts for the first hour. After a few hours of driving, the seat may feel too soft for the rest of the day. But this may be a matter of taste, and besides, the HD accessories catalog already has three alternative seats.

According to Harley-Davidson representatives, average fuel consumption is 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. The tank volume is small - 13.2 liters, which can limit trips over long distances. Another obstacle for long rides is a strong vibration that begins to hit the steering wheel at a speed of about 130 kilometers per hour, despite the balance shaft in the engine.

The marketing genius at Harley-Davidson who decided to compete in the X Games definitely deserves a medal. They want to make racing on flat tracks a new discipline at the games, which could breathe new life into the sport.

Harley-Davidson may be facing the following problem: will today's poor youth, spoiled by environmentally friendly self-propelled cars, want to get behind the wheel of a flashy motorcycle that runs on fossil fuels? Is it possible to lure them away?

Harley-Davidson has already ignited the enthusiasm of designers showcasing their capabilities. Supporting the accessories and parts market is a big benefit for any motorcycle with the HD logo on the tank.

Perhaps yes. Harley-Davidson's demonstration at the Circuit of the Americas for the World Extreme Games attracted a lot of attention from young people, and many 20-year-olds can't wait to try out the new Street.

Mark Daniels was the lead designer on the Street team. Behind the scenes of the industry, designers were already working on modifications and new designs of the motorcycle.

+ Pros
  • Comfort and convenience
  • Very modern transmission
  • The market for accessories and spare parts has already picked up
- Minuses
  • Some savings were made on assembly
  • End of an era: HD has gone mainstream
  • The model cannot be called innovative. I wonder what Erik Buell would come up with?
