Motorcycle "Ural-Wolf": technical characteristics, photos

It is difficult to find a domestic motorcycle that would attract the attention of not only ordinary passers-by, but also experienced bikers. This difficulty is caused by the almost complete absence of models with beautiful external design. But one brave biker began to destroy this offensive fact. Not an iron motorcycle, but a wolf. To be more precise, the Ural-Wolf. Over the short years of its production, the elegant chopper has managed to melt more than one heart of a brutal man. Therefore, the popularity of this two-wheeled vehicle, in some cases, has not subsided to this day.

History of creation

The Ural-Wolf motorcycle began production in 1998. This was Irbitsky's first attempt at motorcycles. Ural-Wolf tried to create competition in the domestic market (up to this point, Japanese models had easily established a monopoly).

But, unfortunately, mass success was not observed for the above two-wheeled transport. It's all due to the greed of the manufacturer. The fact is that the new Wolf cost the same as a used Japanese cruiser. The logic is simple. Why buy untested models when you can find high-quality foreign copies for the same price. But success is a temporary thing. Basically, many experts give high marks to the “wolf” product.

Just 15-20 years ago, the main mode of transport for rural youth was the so-called heavy Ural or Dnepr motorcycles. And at one time I also drove one of these devices, or to be more precise, I had a Dnepr-11. And at least three of my classmates were “heavies” back in their school years.

Now, when coming to the very village where I spent my childhood, it is very rare to hear the sound of a Ural or Dnieper engine. Mostly young people either ride scooters, light mopeds, or those whose richer parents can afford faster models of motorcycles. But many people still have an interest in the old models of heavy motorcycles, and some buy them not so much for use as for collection or simply, as they say, to remember their youth, to ride once or twice a month or two. I remember that before you could buy a Ural or Dnepr with a stroller in decent condition for around 10,000 rubles, although if you tried hard, there were good options even for 5 thousand. And I wanted to know if such motorcycles are now sold new, and how much they cost. It is impossible to find them in showrooms, at least in small towns across the country, but the manufacturer’s official website has such information. But when I went to the page with prices for new Urals, to put it mildly, I couldn’t believe my eyes. And at first I thought that I was seeing double, and I was seeing an extra zero, but after taking a closer look, I realized that my vision was completely fine-) So, the cheapest version of Ural City 2021 costs from 798,000 rubles. And for this money you get this:

Opposite two-cylinder four-stroke engine, 41 hp, electronic fuel injection system, front fork with linkage with two shock absorbers, disc brakes both front and rear. Of course, this version has single rear wheel drive. And there is another, more expensive version, the price tag of which starts from 879,000 rubles, and it differs in that it already has a wheelchair drive, which can be connected if necessary if you are planning to conquer light off-road conditions on this iron horse.

And if among domestic lovers of motorcycle equipment there are not many who buy expensive toys like these, then these models are very popular abroad. And you won’t believe it, but taking into account all the duties and other extra charges, foreigners buy our Urals for $20,000, which is close to 1.5 million rubles. How do you like this device? Would you buy it for your soul?

Appearance

Perhaps the only undeniable advantage of “Wolf” is its appearance. It is innovative, elegant and attractive. It is for its external indicators that this bike has become the cover of the domestic motorcycle industry. At the front you can see a large round headlight. She certainly doesn’t fascinate, but she doesn’t repel either. It should immediately be noted that there is an abundance of chromium. Absolutely everything that is possible sparkles in the sun.

From the side you can get a better look at the Ural-Wolf motorcycle. The photo cannot convey the greatness of this iron machine. The fuel tank, like a powerful chest, is pushed forward. Beneath it lies the heart of this motorcycle - the engine. I'm pleased with the bike's seat. It is made of high-quality leather with a curved shape. Especially in order not to fly off while driving. The exhaust pipes point straight, parallel to the ground.

The appearance of the “Wolf” can truly be called beautiful. Everything is in its place. And most importantly, nothing else is required. The lack of desire to replace any part already speaks of the external perfection of the motorcycle.

Classic cruiser

The Ural-Wolf motorcycle belongs to the cruiser class. By the name itself (from the English word cruiser - literally “to follow the course”) you can understand the purpose of this bike. Traveling calmly is the mission of “Wolf”. And it doesn’t need high speed, good maneuverability, just a comfortable seat.

Cruisers are motorcycles for people. Therefore, the Ural-Wolf is characterized by a classic vertical landing. A straight back does not strain from a long ride, and this is important for every biker.

For a complete picture of imposingness, the seat is lowered quite low. The driver's seat itself is strong and soft, made of high-quality leather. The footrests are placed forward, which prevents your legs from bending at the knees or going numb. Cruisers are a little heavy by nature. That's why they don't chase speed records. They don't have a good, powerful, high-revving engine, but they do have pretty decent handling. In general, the Ural-Wolf is a motorcycle for touring, not for the track. We need to build on this.

Features of cruiser motorcycles: what you need to know before buying?

A cruiser is a pontoon cutter. Regardless of whether it is an old-school bagger hung with panniers, a powercruiser capable of accelerating in 2.7 seconds to a hundred from a standstill, or an American dragster show stopper skeletonized like a chopper, its purpose is to move its blessed owner and passenger in space with maximum comfort and pathos.

The same “cruise” style includes motorcycles that are so different in appearance that it will be difficult to convince a person “not in the know” otherwise. However, modern Triumph Rocket 3, Yamaha V Star (250), Victory Cross Country, Harley-Davidson Road King (Classic), the now defunct Ural Voyage, as well as the “icons” Indian Chief and Sport Scout of the 40s These are all cruiser motorcycles. Cruiser with the prefix “retro”, “hi-tech”, “sport” and “power” - there are them for every taste.

Style attributes are deeply embedded design solutions, not at the level of body kit shape, but deeper - in the geometry of the frame, landing, weight distribution, and handling. External differences in more modern or archaic design of parts are very distracting to the eye, but if you look closely, you will clearly see the same classic silhouette (triangle) of the frame in each example.

Cruiser, in its classical sense, is:

  • Direct, relaxed seating position: forward footrests, a wide, comfortable steering wheel tilted toward the driver, a thick, wide seat with a pronounced “step” that supports the back.
  • “Mattered” duplex (with some exceptions) frame, capacious soft rear suspension, powerful brakes, high-quality wind and mud protection, rake (fork angle) from 30 to 35 degrees, relatively high ground clearance.
  • Large engine capacity. Mostly two-cylinder, with a longitudinal V-shaped arrangement of cylinders. Hence - a huge engine life, a long service interval, a decent reserve of power for overtaking and maneuvering at good speed.

The last point was especially critical, because where to get comfort, or “show-off” - in Zhuzhik. But a large cubic capacity means, a priori, high power, as well as price. Both purchases and contents. Expensive, difficult and a lot - this is not for primary driving lessons. Therefore, the concept: cruisers for beginners (and even more so a cruiser for beginners), and cruise “classics” are like “children’s champagne” and “Dom Perignon”, like a trolley and a steam locomotive... The meaning seems to be the same, but even in form – you can immediately see the cardinal difference, not only in content.

But what if you want something beautiful, but inexpensive? Practical motorcycle manufacturers decided to choose a compromise, and now in public opinion the right to be called a cruiser belongs to even very small-sized motorcycles, as long as the appearance matches the “breed.”

A moment of history

Early beach and boulevard cruisers grew out of the 1930s, when this silhouette was the dominant silhouette for most American motorcycles. Then the evolution of moto moved forward more actively, leaving the “fathers” (Harley and Indian) on the sidelines. Harley transformed successfully, continuing its development, and the Indian was on the verge of bankruptcy several times, stopping the production of its very charismatic, but unclaimed models. In the mid-80s, suddenly, there was a new round of popularity for old-school motorcycles, returning demand (which Milwaukee had technically harnessed) and spawning a sea of clones and imitators.

One of the first “standards of style” was the Indian Chief Hawk of the 50s, with its 1450 cc, and the world looked askance at modern “Japanese attempts at style” with a cubic capacity of less than 1000 cc. But in vain! When time “put all the dots in place,” it was the “cruising” motorcycles of the Japanese Big Four that became the most widespread and popular. Since the beginning of the 2000s (the culmination of consumer interest), in order of popularity, manufacturers have been distributed as follows: Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Harley-Davidson, Indian, BMW.

The best cruiser motorcycles in their class:

  • Honda VT1100 Shadow 1100 cc (1996)
  • Indian Chief 1600 ss (2001-2016)
  • Honda VTX 1.8 1800 cc (2002)
  • Yamaha VMAX 1700 cc (2006)
  • Kawasaki Vulcan VN 1600cc Classic (2008)
  • Harley-Davidson V-Rod 1131 cc (2009)
  • Suzuki Intruder M1800R (aka Boulevard) (2012)
  • Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe 1750 cc (2016)
  • Triumph Rocket III 2300 cc, (2016-2020)

General characteristics

A good motorcycle is a “peppy” motorcycle. “Ural-Wolf” (whose technical characteristics are not very impressive) is not used to showing off its power plant, since it can only compete with old Soviet motorcycles. Well, the Irbit product inherited the insides from its ancestors.

But this is not the worst thing that could happen, you still need to move on. The Ural-Wolf motorcycle feels comfortable both in urban conditions and on highways. He has enough traction for everything. Good management also instills confidence. It came from Italian colleagues.

Motorcycle engine "Ural-Wolf"

Once again, it must be repeated that the “Wolf” is not chasing the right to become the fastest motorcycle on any road. No, this bike has a rather unpretentious engine that simply pushes forward at medium speeds. The motor, standard for the Ural, is of the opposed type. Belongs to a four-stroke system. The total volume of its cylinders is an impressive 745 cubic centimeters. With a maximum power of 45 horsepower, the engine is capable of delivering 4000 rpm. In addition, this motorcycle has two L 22 A carburetors.

The Ural-Wolf is powered by gasoline with an octane rating of at least 92. Like all its brothers, the Wolf is not the number one economical model. Fuel consumption per 100 kilometers is quite high. At a speed of 60 kilometers per hour, this figure stops at 5.5 liters. At a speed of 90 kilometers per hour, consumption increases to 6.5 liters per hundred kilometers. And within the city limits, a motorcycle consumes as much as 7 liters. Quite a lot even for a cruiser. The fuel tank holds 22 liters of fuel. From this it turns out that with a mixed type of driving, you can travel 400 kilometers without refueling.

The gearbox is four-speed. Has reverse gear. Therefore, every time you park, you don’t have to worry about how to get the bike out. Reverse gear and you're good to go.

Technical specifications

  • The volume of the gas tank is 23 liters.
  • Weight – 230 kg.
  • Maximum speed – 120 km/h.
  • Engine power – 36 hp.
  • Engine type – 4-stroke opposed air-cooled.
  • The starting system is a classic version with kickstarter, as well as electric start.

Dimensions

The Ural-Wolf motorcycle has never been a “baby”. On the contrary, the designers tried to make not a bike, but an entire frigate on wheels. Which is what can be observed. The distance from start to finish is 2.31 meters. The wheelbase extends over 1690 millimeters. In the world of motorcycles, these are not small sizes. The thickness of the bike is not that thin - almost ninety centimeters. The height of the motorcycle has grown to 1.15 meters. The weight of the motorcycle without internal fluids (lubricants, fuel, brake fluid) is 229 kilograms.

Motorcycle constructor

“Wolf” does not look like a collapsing bucket, like all its other brothers, only because of one factor: the use of foreign components in the development. Yes, to make their car better, the Irbit plant used foreign spare parts. The Ural-Wolf motorcycle turned out to be something of a successful design rather than a 100% domestic development.

The bike owes its maneuverability to good handling. The steering system uses conical bearings made in Italy. In addition to the kick starter, the bike also has an electronic ignition system. He got it from Ducati. Foreign batteries and generators are also available.

Motorcycle Features

First of all , the Ural Voyage was produced for lovers of long-distance travel - the technical parameters of the motorcycle made it possible to ride throughout the country, while the presence of serious breakdowns was practically excluded. The ability to start a motorcycle with a button and reliable disc brakes - in those days, for the average motorcyclist, such features were in the realm of fantasy.

The electric starter was very useful when operating the motorcycle in city conditions; in addition, improved headlight optics allowed motorcyclists to travel at night with greater comfort. The saddle of the Ural Voyage motorcycle ensured the comfort of the driver and passenger - even after long trips, the “fifth point” did not make itself felt.

The price of the Ural Voyage motorcycle turned out to be affordable for most motorcyclists: they purchased this model due to its significant power reserves, as well as the possibility of rapid acceleration. Despite the brutal appearance and good technical parameters, the Ural Voyage had one serious drawback - the wiring of the motorcycle at the factory left much to be desired.

In addition, when the motorcycle was overloaded, some structural elements could simply fall off while driving, so regular tightening of the main bolts was required before leaving.
