BMW K1300S: comparative test drive with Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa

The model has been produced from 1999 to the present.

In many countries, this hyperbike has been elevated to the rank of a cult due to its crazy reputation, which it has honestly won for itself, due to the potential of the engine, striking appearance and confident handling at any speed.

Hayabusa - "falcon" in Japanese - is the world's first mass-produced motorcycle capable of accelerating over 320 km/h. The motorcycle is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest production motorcycle.

Despite the similarity, from year to year Hayabusa changed colors and some parts, and only for the anniversary, in 2008, the engineers decided to release an almost new motorcycle.

Description

The Suzuki GSX 1300R Hayabusa hyperbike model appeared in 1999 and continues to be produced to the present day. The main reason for the appearance of the motorcycle was Suzuki's desire to beat Honda with its CBR1100xx Blackbird and release the fastest production motorcycle. And they succeeded - for 6 years no one managed to catch up with the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa. Only in 2005, with the release of the Kawasaki ZX-14R, the leadership among the most powerful mass-produced motorcycles passed to the Kawasaki company, but even this fact did not help reduce the popularity of the legendary Hayabusa. In the market of some countries, the model is called Suzuki Hayabusa.

By the way, even the release of the Kawasaki ZX-12R Ninja could not dislodge Hayabusa from the throne. Despite decent technical characteristics, the maximum speed achieved on the Kawasaki ZX-12R Ninja was 308 km/h, while the Suzuki GSX 1300R Hayabusa managed to accelerate to 312 km/h. In general, Kawasaki could have caught up with Suzuki at that moment (and even planned a large-scale presentation of the advantages of the ZX-12R over the Suzuki Hayabusa), but it was in 2000 that an agreement was signed between the Japanese manufacturers and BMW to limit the maximum possible speed to 299 km/h, which automatically made the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa the fastest production motorcycle in the world until 2005, when the Kawasaki ZX-14R came out.

The main feature of the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa is a specially developed in-line 4-cylinder liquid-cooled engine with a displacement of 1340 cc, producing 197 hp. power and 155 Nm of torque. The maximum speed is electronically limited to 299 km/h.

The model has an aluminum diagonal frame, sports adjustable suspension, powerful radial brakes, a fuel injection system with double flaps (proprietary SDTV system), a slipper clutch and a whole range of electronic systems (from ABS to engine power selection).

A naked model, the Suzuki B-King, was built on the basis of the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa.

Brief history of the model

1999-2007 - first generation. During this period, the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa has a 1299 cc engine. and produces 162.6 hp. (173 hp - with inertial supercharging) Thanks to the use of a complex motorcycle aerodynamics system in combination with inertial supercharging, the maximum speed was higher than all the main competitors of the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa. According to numerous tests, the first generation Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa managed to accelerate to 100 km/h in 2.47 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 312 km/h.

2008 - to present vr. - second generation. The Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa model has undergone restyling and numerous modifications to the engine and suspension. The engine capacity increased to 1340 cc, the compression ratio increased (from 11.1 to 12.5) and the maximum power increased to 197 hp. The model also gets lightweight titanium valves, fuel injectors from the Suzuki GSX-R1000, dual throttle bodies (SDTV system) and engine traction control. In addition, the exhaust system (4-2-1-2) is changed and brought into compliance with Euro-3 environmental standards. The motorcycle also gets a new fork and a stiffer rear shock absorber, all suspensions are fully adjustable. According to tests, the second generation Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa managed to accelerate to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds, and the top speed was 299 km/h (limiter). This engine was taken as the basis for the creation of the naked Suzuki B-King.

MUFFLER

Visually balances the massive stern.
Can be replaced with straight-flow Akrapovic But the traction is so soft and inexhaustible that the motorcycle simply tears up the space and imperceptibly, smoothly unloads the front wheel. And to do a wheelie, you just need to let off the gas and immediately open the throttle sharply. Still the same feeling! But the 260-kilogram colossus lands not too gracefully.

On the first day I drove about 700 km, more than half of which were in very high-speed directions with sweeping turns. Only about a hundred kilometers were spent on relatively narrow roads, and even less on city traffic. I am sharing these details because the Hayabusa is a comfortable motorcycle.

I never had the desire to stop to stretch my limbs or give my butt a break. The ergonomics are thought out to the smallest detail, and it allows for both a sporty semi-recumbent landing and a straight tourist one.
