Motorcycle as a way of life: stories of Tula bikers

The essence of bikers:

Bikers are lovers and admirers of motorcycles, but unlike ordinary motorcyclists, bikers have a motorcycle as part of their lifestyle.
Their ideology is based on three symbols: road, speed and freedom. It is also characteristic to unite with like-minded people based on this way of life. — Advertising —

The spirit of brotherhood, freedom and truth, which underlies the philosophy of a true biker, tries to resist the temptations and temptations of a society of consumerism and hypocrisy. The motorcycle always comes first for a biker. Then everything else, including love and family.

The knowledge of a bike club member includes knowledge of the technical intricacies of servicing your favorite iron horse, as well as the history of the movement and the club, and rules of behavior. Many motorcycle clubs have a president, vice-president, sergeant-at-arms, treasurer, and secretary who perform their duties. Every biker is an active participant in the motorcycle life, whose activities are aimed at benefiting the community.

Biker Style:

Leather biker jacket, denim or leather vest with the symbols of a motorcycle club, leather pants. Bandanas, black knitted hats that protect from the wind, motorcycle glasses, long hair, a beard and mustache. Helmets in the form of stylized German helmets from the Second World War. Symbolism: skull, number 13, iron cross and confederate flag.

Motorcycle as a way of life: stories of Tula bikers

Sergey Tiunov, 39 years old, driving experience – 23 years:

– I’ve been driving a motorcycle since I was 16 years old. For my 15th birthday, my dad gave me a Minsk motorcycle, disassembled for parts, and special literature. This is where my journey into the world of motorcycles began. Over the winter I assembled it, and since then I have never parted with two-wheeled equipment. I bought my first serious motorcycle in 2003 – a Japanese Suzuki GSX 400.

Sergey Tiunov: “The main thing is to have the opportunity to do what you love.”

– Since childhood, I was brave and athletic, I wanted to always be at the peak. Just riding a motorcycle soon became uninteresting; I wanted something extreme, on the edge. I was very interested in stunt riding - stunt riding. When I watched the video of the guys riding on one wheel, how they “burn rubber,” it sank into my soul, I wanted to do the same. Like-minded people immediately found themselves. At first we “stunted” in the city, and other drivers most likely considered us city hooligans. But gradually we went for a ride in the parking lot of one of the shopping centers - here we don’t bother anyone. As athletes, we are invited to perform at city events, such as City Day and Youth Day.

For the sake of stunt riding, the motorcycle had to be re-equipped - it is now not very suitable for driving around the city. Of course, we can take a ride around the city, go to a cafe in the evening, and say hello to friends. But for long trips I prefer a car.

The basic rule of a motorcyclist is that no one sees you, you see everyone. On the road you need to be as attentive and careful as possible, slow down before an intersection, analyze the road surface for the presence of dust, asphalt cuts, because any little thing can lead to tragedy. I can't say that I'm a very experienced driver. When I’m 90 years old, I’m alive and well, then I’ll say: “Guys, I drive a motorcycle cool!”

Alexander Utkin, 44 years old, 30 years of driving experience:

– I was born in the city of Pevek in Chukotka, where one of the main entertainments for boys was the “Falcon” motorcycle club. Dad brought me here. Motorcycles fascinated me very much. Since 2000, I have lived in Tula, and it was here that I bought my first serious Kawasaki motorcycle, and a couple of years later, a Yamaha chopper. Since then I have owned a lot of motorcycles, now I have five!

Alexander Utkin: “I don’t consider myself a biker. I am a motorcycle tourist!

– I drive around the city very rarely. For me, a motorcycle is a journey. I have everything in my motorcycle: a tent, a bed, pillows, blankets, a quadcopter, a TV... I always have enough food for a week. I really love long journeys, even in winter. Sometimes alone, sometimes a whole company gathers. My wife lets me go. Forbidding a loved one to do something is stupid. For what?

The most exciting adventure was in 2009, we crossed the Polar Urals on motorcycles - Nadym, Salekhard, Labytnangi, Vorkuta... We got caught in a terrible snowstorm and couldn’t leave for four days. The most beautiful places are Norway, Lofoten Islands. Well, the most pleasant trip is to Georgia, there are friends there. I am an atheist and believe only in friendship. Only my friends saved me in life. I really value friendship with every person, for me it’s like gold.

My dream is to get to the Bering Strait, where I served in the army. I really want to travel along the coast of Scandinavia with my family. I left America before my 55th birthday, I want to take a Harley-Davidson and ride there.

Yulia Bubenkova, 23 years old, driving experience – 3 years:

– I just wanted to learn how to drive a motorcycle, and at the age of 19 I came to a driving school. This thought had been in my head for a long time, and then I had free time, and I decided - why not try? Everything worked out for me right away, I passed the exams the first time. And a week later I already bought a Honda motorcycle. Now I have my third motorcycle – Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit. Mom trusts me completely and rides with me as a passenger. In fact, there are a lot of girls driving motorcycles. More than you think.

Yulia Bubenkova: “Take care of yourself on the road!”

– I love long trips. I went to Crimea twice, to the village of Teriberka on the Kola Peninsula of the Murmansk region (more than two thousand kilometers!), I often go to festivals. On weekends – to the nearest regions. I want to attach a sidecar to the motorcycle for greater stability, so that I can ride in winter.

In my dreams - to go to Akbaital, this is a pass in the Eastern Pamirs in Tajikistan. This is a difficult route that requires a different class of motorcycle. Maybe I'll buy myself another one.

Driving alone is not scary at all. It's even easier than in a group. Difficulties may arise along the way, especially technical ones. Last year I was driving in the rain, the spark plugs were flooded, and I started having problems with the ignition. I had to stop and dry out. So you need to know at least a little about the structure of a motorcycle.

For me, the main rule of a motorcyclist is: you cannot ride at a higher speed than the speed at which you can control the road situation.

Ilya Shanin, 33 years old, driving experience – 3 years:

– All my life I dreamed of getting behind the wheel of a motorcycle, and at the age of 29 I realized - either now or never. I went to driving school, completed category “A” and soon bought my first motorcycle – a Suzuki-Desperado. Now I have a Yamaha Royal Star. I called my motorcycle “Moto-Moto”, after the hippopotamus from the cartoon “Madagascar”. But when I learned to use it, it became light and nimble, and I could no longer call it that, because I was the hippopotamus, since at first I could not control it.

Ilya Shanin opened his fourth motorcycle season this spring.

– Previously, my wife and I used to travel by bus or car, now we try to make all long trips on a motorcycle, any such trip – more than 300-400 km – is already cool and exciting. Yes, traveling by car is more convenient: you can take a lot of things with you, sleep in the back seat, and take wine and watermelons home. But on a motorcycle it’s a completely different emotion. You ride in a car, like in a capsule - your own climate, your own music, you are fenced off from the world. On a motorcycle you are open to the world, you are here and now, the wind is blowing, the rain is pouring... At a gas station there is always a dialogue with other motorcyclists, my circle of friends has grown very much. I drive a car in winter if I need to transport something or someone. But not for pleasure anymore.

A motorcyclist should do everything based on safety considerations, and not on how he looks or what impression he makes. Because the price is very high - life or health. Yuri Dud in a film about Kamchatka told his comrades that they were snowboarding without helmets. And one of them, although experienced, broke his head. Dying may not be scary, but it’s scary to remain a vegetable and become a burden to your loved ones. When you ride a motorcycle, you have to think about it all the time.

Maria (40 years old) and Sergey (51 years old) Muratovs, 15 years of experience:

“Together we decided to learn to drive motorcycles, and since then we travel only on two-wheelers. At first we bought small mopeds and rode around the city, then we wanted more - we bought motorcycles. Now for 11 years we have had powerful BMW motorcycles, they are ideal for tourism: they are heavy, like a car, they have “crazy” brains and a security system.

Maria and Sergey: “We have many active hobbies: windsurfing, alpine skiing, ATVs, motocross. We spend all our holidays actively – lying on the beach is not for us.”

– Every year we definitely go somewhere for the May holidays. We traveled to many interesting places in the world. And one of the most memorable was the trip in 2021 to Ossetia, Georgia and Chechnya. We were led onto a narrow mountain path 60 km long, we drove along it for about five hours in the rain, the wheels “floated”, and even sat down every now and then. It was very dangerous.

Is it difficult to drive a motorcycle? The main thing is to take it very seriously, go to a good driving school and enjoy it. People ask us what’s fun about driving thousands of kilometers, sometimes in difficult weather conditions. This is an indescribable feeling of freedom, the whole world around you, smells, sounds. The motorcycle becomes a part of you, and after 400 km you and it become one. The speed at which we travel is approximately 160 km/h, and only on the ideal roads of Germany we allowed ourselves 270 km/h. But at this speed you can't control anything, so this is the exception to the rule.

It is very important to follow traffic rules on the road. No distractions. And buy good equipment: a helmet, suits made of non-flammable fabric, motorcycle boots - you can’t do without it.

All motorcyclists are adrenaline junkies, it’s like a drug, you get hooked on it. The buzz you get is incomparable.

[edit] General overview

Typical representative How to distinguish motorcycles by sounds They also come with a national bias
Usually SUDDENLY appear in the default city in the middle of spring, shocking with their squeal (if we are talking about a sportbike) or hellish roar (if the biker is the owner of a chopper with direct flow) of blondes who have bought pumping rights in winter. However, in the conditions of Default City and others like it, the main task of a loud exhaust is to alert stupid four-wheelers who tend to ignore the motorcycle until the sound of “bam” sounds. But, wow, a heart-rending squeal or growl puts quite a lot of pressure on the ears of the owner himself, if he drives further than the tavern in the next block, of course.

Initially, bikers, as is commonly said, appeared in post-war America, when a crowd of discharged pilots began to suffer from adrenaline withdrawal[1]. And since a used “X-D” or “Indian” was then quoted approximately the same as “Ural” in this country of grandfathers, and these companies themselves sponsored amateur motorcycle racing quite a bit... In general, it was quite logical.

In Russia, there has not yet been a clear classification of who is a biker and who cannot be one. It is believed that the biker

- this is a member of some motorcycle club, with “colors”, subject to the charter, etc., but simply a person freely riding a motorcycle -
a motorcyclist
, or
a freerider
. However, there is also a point of view that there are no bikers here at all, just like rock.

Kids whose parents bought a moped may think differently, but who gives a fuck?

In any case, topics like: “Who are bikers” or “What do you need to do to become a biker?” are the cause of fierce sracha, or even holiwar, on many motorcycle forums in this country.

Three Steps Above Heaven

Tres metros sobre el cielo

  • Spain, 2010.
  • Action, drama, melodrama.
  • Duration: 123 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6.9.

Still from the film “Three Meters Above the Sky”
A young biker, Ache, who loves to take risks, falls in love with Babi, a well-bred girl from a wealthy family. Despite the circumstances, a relationship begins between them that will not lead to anything good.

The plot about the love of an innocent schoolgirl and a notorious hooligan, of course, does not sparkle with novelty. But still, the film adaptation of Federico Moccia’s book captivated audiences around the world. And all thanks to the charming actors Maria Valverde and Mario Casas, as well as the gorgeous views of Barcelona, where the main passions are in full swing.

Beyond the Law

Beyond the Law

  • USA, 1993.
  • Drama, crime.
  • Duration: 108 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6.5.

Undercover cop Dan Sachs infiltrates a gang of bikers involved in the arms trade. The hero quickly gains authority, but is so imbued with a rebellious spirit that he almost goes over to the dark side.

The cult film of the nineties with the flamboyant Charlie Sheen and Michael Madsen as the main villain still looks great. The picture is complemented by a cool rock'n'roll soundtrack.

Savage (1953)

Marlon Brando already looked too cool just standing there, and The Savage upped the cool factor by adding a motorcycle. The film is often credited with popularizing the idea of motorcycle gangs in Hollywood films. Soon after it came out, many more followed.

Brando plays Johnny Strabler, the cop-hating leader of the Black Rebels biker gang. The British Board of Film Classification banned the film for glorifying crime and violence. Some UK local councils later lifted the ban.
