TMZ (Tutachevsky Motor Plant) is an enterprise specializing in the production of engines for road equipment, trucks, dump trucks, etc. But in addition to engines, the company develops and produces ATVs. The most famous device of the enterprise is Lynx 2, presented back in 2005. What is so interesting about an all-terrain vehicle from a domestic company?

It’s worth starting with the fact that the development of ATVs for the TMZ enterprise is far from being a core area. But despite this, the Lynx 2 model turned out to be quite decent. The company produces only two devices:

  • Lynx 6.903. The model, introduced back in 2003, is equipped with a 350 cc engine producing 21.7 hp. The two-stroke motor of the device is equipped with a water cooling system. It is essentially a workhorse designed for towing loads, working in the fields and other agricultural tasks.
  • ATV Lynx 2. An updated model was introduced in 2004. This is a lightweight version of the 6.903, characterized by smaller dimensions and an engine capacity of 347.6 cc. see. The purpose of the device has not changed; the machine can still be used for fishing, hunting and performing household tasks.

An interesting feature of TMZ equipment is its classic Soviet design. Many owners call Lynx 2 a motorcycle version of the GAZ 67B SUV. Indeed, if you look closely, the cars have some similarities. Unfortunately, such an outdated design does not add to the attractiveness of the ATV.

An ATV is a four-wheeled off-road vehicle. This vehicle is in demand today. “Lynx” ATVs are an excellent type of off-road vehicle that became popular immediately after the release of the first domestic models in 2009.

Description of the Lynx 500 model

The Lynx 500 ATV is the first proprietary model. Its technical indicators and characteristics were of great interest to the services of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the FSB. The advantages of this model are the following features:

  • Ease of maintenance.
  • Excellent cross-country ability in muddy and swampy areas, as well as in rugged forests and other off-road conditions.

The ATV has excellent design and maneuverability. This model can be confidently used for outdoor activities, although its direct purpose is to work in agriculture. This mechanism is also used in rescue operations, for hunting or fishing.

  • Nikolay, Kazan: had the opportunity to ride a Lynx 440 snowmobile for several years (I borrowed it from my brother). The model was redesigned as a sports one. The equipment goes well on hard snow in the fields, but in the forest it is not very comfortable. Due to its heavy weight, the Lynx 440 sinks a little in heavy snow levels. On virgin soil, the snowmobile is suitable for use in a well-worn trench. At short distances the model looks good, but for long journeys and hunting this is not the best option. I had problems several times while on the road. On top of everything else, the fuel consumption of a snowmobile is very high.
  • Omsk_500: I rode the Lynx 440 snowmobile for quite a long time (from 2005 to 2009). I bought the equipment used (second owner). After 4 years of operation, I realized that the snowmobile is not nearly as good as it was described to me when I bought it:

– it’s simply impossible to drive on loose and deep snow without a shovel;

– the ignition regularly failed;

– in comparison with the Buran series, the traction qualities of the Lynx 440 are much worse (compared with a friend);

– the transmission broke down 5-6 times in 4 years;

– fuel hoses had to be changed after the first year of operation;

– repairing the Lynx 440 in the field is not always possible and not for everyone (the same Buran was easily sorted right in the forest).

  • Snowmobile owner 1975: Good afternoon! I used the Lynx 440 snowmobile for two years. Before purchasing, I looked at the information on the forums. Despite the complaints, I decided to buy the Lynx. In the first week of skating, the belt fell apart. As a result, I had to change and reconfigure the variator. At the end of the first year, the suspension spring burst, so I bought a new one. The Lynx 440 rides very poorly on powder, but on a pond or on a rut it’s fine (I accelerated to 100 km/h). In the second season, the gearbox jammed right in the forest, and it was difficult to get home. This was the last straw that prompted me to sell this unit. Lynx 440 is a very problematic snowmobile.
  • Nikonor: The advantages of the Lynx 440 snowmobile are clear. The model is quite cheap to operate, Russian spare parts are always available, and the price tag for the equipment is small (does not exceed 150,000 rubles). At the same time, the snowmobile has a roomy seat, good traction and reverse speed. Lynx 440 is unpretentious and quite reliable, although there are a lot of shortcomings in the design. Among the disadvantages, I would like to note the poor headlight switches, which complicate the process of starting the equipment. In terms of characteristics, the Lynx 440 reminds me of the domestic Buran, but is inferior to it in quality and reliability.

Lynx 440 is a Russian-made universal snowmobile. The car was created by specialists at the plant in Ufa. The developers had high hopes for this model, which was first introduced in 1991. This device was positioned as a first-class snowmobile, designed for driving on snowy plains, deep snowdrifts and rough terrain. As a result, this snowmobile has gained very high popularity in the post-Soviet space. The car remained relevant for another 18 long years. On its basis, various modifications with certain characteristics were produced. At the same time, the entire family of Lynx 440 snowmobiles was united by the high quality of workmanship characteristic of the products of the Ufa enterprise.

Description of the model “Lynx RM 150”

The Lynx RM 150 ATV of the domestic brand “Russian Mechanics” is in demand on tourist trips. The model is also suitable as a functional wheeled all-terrain vehicle. It was released in 2021 in Russia. The engine capacity is 150 cm³.

Thanks to a well-designed chassis and rubber with increased lug, the machine can easily overcome very difficult terrain. And thanks to the installed forced cooling system, engine overheating under increased loads is out of the question.

Model line of snowmobiles

The main representatives of the “family” of Lynx snowmobiles are models 113, 119, 500 and 440.

All-terrain vehicles "Lynx" were produced for eighteen years, during which they were modified and modified more than once. UMPO (manufacturer of snowmobiles), starting from the very first vehicle models, tried to find the most successful solutions to increase the reliability of domestic all-terrain vehicles and improve the main characteristics of Lynx snowmobiles.

The first model in the series is considered to be “Lynx 113”. The prototype of the all-terrain vehicle was the well-known and time-tested Arctic Cat. In order to reduce the weight of the car, the engine was made of light metal alloys. Silicon-coated aluminum cylinders could not cope with high loads. The lack of a liner had a negative effect: in the first tens of kilometers of the journey, the engine could jam, which would disable the equipment. As a result, the copy of the all-terrain vehicle turned out to be not the best.

The next model - 119 - has undergone significant changes, surpassing its predecessor in technical characteristics. The manufacturer has improved the design of the all-terrain vehicle, equipping it with an improved pan and hood that make it easier to overcome snow obstacles. An improved cooling system and the use of liners have reduced the number of engine cylinder failures.

“Lynx-Sport 121” became the next model released by UMPO. Thanks to the reduced body length, the snowmobile has increased maneuverability.

In the model line of Ufa manufacturers of special equipment, the Lynx 500 machines are considered. It was these modifications that began to be equipped with Mikuni carburetors. The all-terrain vehicle received design changes and acquired tracks 500 mm wide. It was equipped with a gear gearbox. All snowmobiles of this model were equipped with heated steering grips.

“Lynx 440” has become an improved version of the 500 model, which is currently in wide use.

Technical differences between models

The range of Lynx ATVs is quite diverse. Models for both beginners and more experienced drivers are on sale. Lynx 150 is a more versatile SUV. It is suitable for both teenagers and adults. Its recommended load is up to 110 kg.

At first glance, experienced drivers may think that the 150 cc engine is too small. But it is worth considering that the engine of this model is four-stroke. This is a significant advantage over a less traction and more consuming two-stroke engine.

Thanks to the three-speed variator, you can choose the appropriate driving mode in any conditions. This car also has a reverse gear, which makes driving much more comfortable. The Lynx 150 (Russian Mechanics) ATV has excellent stability on rough terrain, as well as comfortable movement on asphalt. This is the merit of the designers, who endowed the ATV with excellent suspension and wide tires with a well-designed tread pattern.

The model has a small tank of 4.5 liters. The ATV also has effective braking, thanks to the hydraulic drive installed on all wheels. With such characteristics, you can feel safe and comfortable while operating this unit.

The Lynx 500 ATV differs from the previous model in power, endurance, and dimensions. This SUV has a carburetor engine originally from China. The engine capacity is 493 cm³. It has a power of 32 horsepower. This model is a powerful unit that can overcome particularly complex loads.

The SUV overcomes water obstacles without much difficulty, since the engine and air intake have a high structural location. The braking system is a single-disc type for the front wheels, and a disc transmission for the rear wheels. This ensures ease of operation. A hydraulic brake drive is installed on both the front and rear wheels.

The model also has a reinforced frame, all-wheel drive, a spacious trunk and a 17-liter fuel tank. This ensures movement of up to 110 kilometers without refueling.

ATV frame

Depending on the “donor” and the design of the quad, you either have to make the frame yourself, or you can reconstruct a finished, used one.

The most important thing is that the engine is securely bolted to the bottom along the frame, which can be located either front or rear. The transmission and drive should also be firmly attached to the frame to avoid play.

Homemade frame

The material used is ordinary water and gas pipes with a wall thickness of no more than 3 mm:

Reconstruction of an existing frame

To reconstruct a finished frame, you should remove everything, leaving the frame, dismantle the back part and build up the front. Then weld elements for fastening a complete set of components and assemblies of the ATV. When reconstructing a motorcycle frame, the seatposts should be moved back by 40 - 45 cm.

The front and rear luggage racks are cut out of a metal sheet and welded to the frame. Finally, the finished frame is painted; there is no need to varnish it.

Fuel system

Incorrect fuel supply and increased/decreased fuel consumption indicate a problem with the fuel pump. To eliminate them, simply clean the part thoroughly.

The advantage of domestic Lynx snowmobiles is simple and cheap repairs that do not cause many problems. Original spare parts for all-terrain vehicles can be purchased at most auto stores, and some of them are comparable to motorcycle counterparts.
