Snowmobile "Lynx 440": technical characteristics, features and reviews

The Lynx 500 snowmobile is a representative of the products of the Ufa Motor Manufacturing Production Association (UMPO). This manufacturer has been specializing in serial production of utilitarian equipment since 1991. In 2009, the Ufa Motor-Building Production Association announced a complete refusal to produce snowmobiles. The latest model that was released by UMPO is the Lynx 500 snowmobile.

This snowmobile has a trunk with a large capacity, and there is also a high visor that protects the driver from headwinds and various precipitation. All this has a positive effect on operating comfort.

This car was so named for a reason, as it is very fast and at the same time quite maneuverable. In order to ensure smooth movement even on rough terrain, the manufacturer has improved the designs of the rear and front suspension. The wide caterpillar track allows the snowmobile to confidently move both on loose and deep snow, and on crusty snow.

The Lynx 500 snowmobile turned out to be quite multi-purpose, with improved performance characteristics with a fairly powerful and at the same time quite economical power unit. This model is ideal as a workhorse, so it is often used on farms, in forestry, in oil and gas pipeline maintenance, and in patrolling state borders. In snowy off-road conditions, a snowmobile is capable of covering a long distance, dragging sleds and sleds with loads weighing no more than 250 kilograms. Another feature is the ability to operate at fairly low ambient temperatures, namely, the power plant can be easily started even in frosts of minus 40 degrees. The snowmobile performed well in various tests conducted in Yakutia, beyond the Arctic Circle.

Reviews of the Lynx 500 snowmobile

  • “Overall, this is a good unit for harsh winter conditions. Like any vehicle, the Lynx has its pros and cons. The advantages include good stability, excellent engine thrust and, accordingly, load capacity. The snowmobile is still a hard worker. If you attach a trailer, you can transport various loads. Personally, I transported a lot of firewood with a snowmobile and am very grateful to the Lynx 500 for this. The downside of the model and almost all “Lynxes” is simply the enormous turning angle and the “wooden” shock-absorbing system. All the “delights” of the suspension are perfectly felt on the bumps.”
  • “Perhaps the main advantage of Lynx over its competitors, including foreign ones, is the price. The cost of a snowmobile is several times less than, for example, the same Japanese cars. Yes, the quality is different, but the fact remains a fact. I don't like the lack of neutral speed, it affects the handling. For example, this will definitely prevent a beginner from fully owning the unit.”
  • “Normal equipment for the money. Easy to maintain, it is difficult to find an easier snowmobile to operate. The speed limit is decent, 90-100 km/h is the only way to go. Cruising speed is approximately 50-60 km/h.

Modifications

This snowmobile was produced in several modified versions, namely this:

  • Modification Lynx 500+. This modified version is more of a touring car than a work car. It uses a 500mm wide track, which ensures high maneuverability on any surface. The basic package for this modification includes an electric starter.
  • Modification Lynx 500M. This is the basic version with a modified hood. In addition, instead of the previous carburetor, a Japanese-made single-chamber carburetor, Mikuni model, was installed. The basic package for this modification includes an electric starter.
  • Modification Lynx 500MP. This modification also has a modified hood and a single-chamber carburetor. This version featured a gear-type gearbox. Externally, the snowmobile is completely similar to the previous modification. The basic package for this modification includes an electric starter.

Currently, this snowmobile is also very popular among fishermen and hunters, as it allows you to perform all the necessary tasks, including moving to hard-to-reach places.

The device itself - the Lynx snow blower (from Nikkey) is very easy to control and operate, multifunctional, spartanly minimalistic and always reliable. At the same time, snow removal equipment will truly blend harmoniously into the busy everyday life.

The Lynx snow blower, manufactured by Nikkey, allows the driver to move in any conditions. Also, among the hundreds of advantages of the device, one cannot fail to note a significant range of speeds: from minimal to fresh.

Engine

The Lynx 500 snowmobile is equipped with a gasoline two-stroke power plant. This unit has only two cylinders in the block, the total working volume of which is 0.431 liters. The rated output power reaches 29.42 kilowatts, which translates to 40 horsepower. An air-forced cooling system is used, which allows the machine to be operated not only at low temperatures, but also in warm conditions. The lubrication system uses a special mixture that includes gasoline and oil. This provides the lubricating fluid with frost resistance, which is one of the necessary parameters in harsh operating conditions. The engine consumes about 20 liters of gasoline for every hundred. It is unpretentious in terms of the quality of the fuel being poured, but it is worth noting that gasoline of at least AI-80 is required. The engine is started manually, however, an electric starter can also be included in the package. A non-contact electronic ignition system is used, ensuring smooth and stable operation of the unit under various operating conditions.

Engine parameters

The “filling” of the model is a two-stroke engine with two cylinders. The operation of the engine creates quite a lot of noise. At the same time, fuel consumption cannot be called gentle. Compared to 4-stroke engines, the power unit on the Lynx 119 is very voracious. During the development of the snowmobile, engineers and designers did not think about the environment. The exhaust leaves a dirty trail in the snow. Later, with the arrival of warm weather, all this falls into the soil.

The advantages of the engine include unpretentiousness and high reliability. Also, the power unit is small in size, which is good news. A powerful engine provides the necessary traction, which makes the Lynx rush forward under any conditions. For practical use, a trailer can be hitched to the rear. Although the manufacturer stated that the trailer weight is no more than 250 kg, the Lynx can handle a whole ton. The “quality” of the snow is important so that it is not loose.

Price

Due to the complete cessation of mass production of the Lynx 500 snowmobile, finding it in a completely new technical condition is quite a difficult task, and it is not a fact that there are still such ones left. Used cars are available for sale and their prices vary from 80 thousand rubles to 150 thousand Russian rubles. The cost for this snowmobile is quite low, since in terms of functionality and performance it can compete strongly with newer imported models of snowmobiles.

Flaws

Unfortunately, Lynx has significant shortcomings. These include build quality and resource. It is still possible to cope with the first “illness”. All you have to do is go through the entire snowmobile with your own hands and tighten all the connections properly. At the same time, from time to time it is necessary to monitor the technical condition of the snowmobile. There’s nothing you can do about the resource, except take care of the snowmobile like the apple of your eye. But, as people say, “there would be no happiness, but misfortune would help.” Due to these shortcomings, the price of Lynx is not that high. You can purchase this model for under $1000.

The range of domestic Lynx snowmobiles includes many interesting models. One of these is the Lynx 500, which also refers to tourist snowmobiles. To learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of the unit, consider the reviews.

Owner reviews

Positive feedback from owners:

  • In the winter of 2005, my father and I sold our old Buran snowmobile and decided to find a more improved alternative. And then we came across the Lynx 500 snowmobile. Not only did we like the machine for its design and performance, but another advantage was that it can also be used with 76-grade gasoline (AI-80). In general, we purchased a snowmobile at a cost of 115 thousand Russian rubles. The first impressions of this model were positive, and if we compare it with the same snowstorm, it is noticeable that the Lynx is superior to our first snowmobile in almost all respects: it is more powerful, convenient, maneuverable and simpler. Later it turned out that the car has one weak point, namely the gearbox chain, which very often needs to be tensioned again. As for the rest, we are quite pleased with the technology. So far there have been no serious breakdowns.
  • I bought Lynx 500+ and didn’t regret it at all. The snowmobile starts perfectly regardless of weather conditions. Personally, I have successfully and quickly started the engine many times at a temperature of minus 35 degrees, which is good news. The snowmobile is also very resistant to rollovers on slopes, which is due to the wide-spaced front skis. My configuration has heated steering wheel grips, which prevents your hands from freezing. Among the shortcomings, I would like to note that the engine is a little weak, and the gearbox does not have a neutral speed. The equipment is very reliable in operation. Once I reached a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour, and the snowmobile confidently stayed on the surface. But as the manufacturer claims about 20 liters of consumption per 100 kilometers, this did not happen. Consumption is much higher even when used in gentle mode.
  • I bought this snowmobile in the spring for half the price. All summer I waited for winter to come so I could test the purchase, and finally it happened. At the beginning of operation, no problems were identified, which was surprising, since I bought a used one from 2004. After the purchase, I replaced the variator belt with a Kevlar one. I drove every day for several hours for a month, before the first problems appeared. The return spring in the “kick starter” has flown (there is no electric starter...). But we still managed to fix it.
  • The advantages of this snowmobile are immediately clear. The market price, accessible to everyone (ranging from 80 thousand rubles to 150 thousand Russian rubles), will not cause large financial costs for maintenance. There is a speed for rear movement, which is very convenient off-road. There is also airflow for the steering wheel handles and legs, and a roomy seat. So far I have noticed the following shortcomings: poor placement of voltage regulators, which leads to oxidation of the terminals and loss of spark at the candles, and weak headlight switches, which is why many people connect directly, but this leads to a more difficult engine start when cold. Otherwise, it’s a good device, superior in appearance to the well-known Buran snowmobile, but slightly inferior to it in technical characteristics.

Fast domestic snowmobile Lynx, which has shown itself well in work

The Lynx snowmobile has been produced by the Ufa Motor-Building Production Association (UMPO) since 1991. In 2009, UMPO completely abandoned the production of snowmobiles, and production of this model was discontinued.

The Lynx snowmobile is designed to operate in the harshest conditions; it is able to maintain normal performance even at ambient temperatures down to -40 degrees Celsius. Tests of this vehicle took place beyond the Arctic Circle, in Yakutia, where the iron “predator” showed excellent results.

The Lynx snowmobile is equipped with a very spacious trunk, as well as a high canopy that reliably protects from wind and precipitation. This creates additional comfort during operation.

The unit fully justifies its name: the Lynx snowmobile is a high-speed, but at the same time very maneuverable machine.

Its rear and front suspension design ensures smooth ride even over rough terrain at high speed. Thanks to the wide track, the machine confidently moves both on loose deep snow and on crusty snow.

The lineup

"Lynx" 113

- the first and not entirely successful model with an engine capacity of 440 cc, copied from an Arctic Cat car.
The engine cylinders were made entirely of aluminum, they were silicon coated, there were no liners. Because of this flaw, the piston “stuck” occurred, and the engine often failed without traveling even a few tens of kilometers. • “Lynx” 119
– a tourist-class snowmobile. In this model, the hood design was changed, and a new “boat” pan was made for the bottom of the engine compartment, replacing fragile fiberglass with plastic.

The engine also underwent changes: its volume was reduced to 432 cc, wider purge windows were made for the cylinders and they were equipped with liners, reducing the likelihood that “hot seizure” would occur during operation. • “Lynx-sport” 121

— sports class snowmobile, shortened version of the 119 model.
“Lynx-500+” 219
- a tourist-class snowmobile with a 50 cm wide track. •
“Lynx-500M”
- the hood of the base model was changed, the car was equipped with a Japanese MIKUNI carburetor.

"Lynx-500MP"

— a modified model with a gear transmission.

Each Lynx snowmobile could be equipped with an electric starter as an option.

Basic technical characteristics:

• capacity: 2 people;• engine: 2-stroke, 2-cylinder, carburetor, air-cooled, volume 432 cc, power 40 hp;• maximum speed: 70 km/h;• fuel tank: 18 l ;• fuel type: A-76, AI-92;• fuel consumption: 20 liters per 100 km;• dry weight: 280 kg;• weight of loaded towed sled: 250 kg;• caterpillar: rubber-fabric with reinforcement rods, width 50 cm ;

• dimensions: length 3.2 m; width 1.24 m; height 1.32 m.

Many Russians speak positively about this snowmobile model: a comfortable, quite powerful and very economical model. The Lynx snowmobile is preferred by both hunters and tourists. Like any model, the Lynx has its drawbacks, but according to reviews of this car, it has more pros than cons.
