Polaris RZR 2021

Polaris RZR XP 1000 – a new headache for competitors

INNER WORLD Polaris prepared its counterattack to Canadian competitors very thoughtfully, calculating all the possible pros and cons of the new car. This is probably why the liter RZR was designed almost from scratch. True, with maximum preservation of the external generic characteristics of the entire family. The main sensation of the new product was, of course, the engine. The ProStar dual overhead camshaft, twin-cylinder, inline-four engine with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) delivers a class-leading 110 horsepower! And this without the use of turbocharging or compressor! Just yesterday, such characteristics in the world of all-terrain vehicles could be considered fantastic, but today they are already quite commonplace.

The new RZR has the familiar PVT variator and all-wheel drive transmission with two operating modes, familiar to the entire family. The all-terrain vehicle can travel in rear-wheel drive or, when the AWD system is activated, in full. Here it is necessary to note one feature inherent in all Polaris equipment: all-wheel drive is activated automatically when the rear wheels slip and is turned off when their traction with the ground is restored. The suspension of the car is made according to a completely traditional design. Up front there are dual A-arms with Walker Evans 2″ Needle shocks with 406mm of travel, rebound and compression adjustments and a remote reservoir. On the rear axle there is an independent suspension on trailing arms with a transverse stabilizer and adjustable Walker Evans 2.5″ Needle shock absorbers with a stroke of 457 mm. The brakes on all four wheels are hydraulic discs with two-piston calipers.

To make it easier to pilot the car, an EPS electric power steering system is installed in the steering system. Interestingly, unlike the Can-Am Maverick, the new XP 1000 has a full-fledged cargo bed in the rear with a lifting capacity of 136.1 kg. If necessary, it can carry the necessary tools, fuel supply and necessary spare parts.

Double A-arms with Walker Evans 2'' Needle shocks

In the High Lifter Edition, snorkels are installed directly on the conveyor

The ergonomics of the driver's seat of the new RZR can be called almost standard

Seats with well-developed lateral support hold the driver and passenger well in sharp turns.

The gearbox selector surprises with its precise operation

The rear view mirror is more likely a nod to certification authorities than a functional working part

To access the engine, it is enough to remove a special cover in a small body

Colored inserts in the interior of the all-terrain vehicle look very fresh and fashionable

ROAD TESTS

With careless manipulation of the gas pedal, even with all-wheel drive engaged, the RZR XP 1000 tends to drive sideways and on relatively straight sections. And when cornering you have to keep your eyes open. The engine power is not just a lot - its supply seems endless. I don't know how the turbo Can-Am performs (unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to test it yet), but the new Polaris is simply great. To be honest, I don’t even want to bother with the traditional description of its driving characteristics, you just have to drive it at least once. By the way, the undoubted advantages of its power plant were successfully proven by the past racing season, in which crews using the XP 1000 took the majority of prizes in all more or less high-status racing series. The power steering works almost perfectly, if not for some delay in its reactions at high speeds. Another undoubted advantage of the car is that the “mad liter”, traditionally for all “sides” of this series, does not try to treacherously fall to one side when cornering, which is what distinguishes it from some of its direct competitors. But the energy capacity of the stock Walker Evans shock absorbers is sorely lacking on the cross-country track. But if you don’t force the XP 1000 to make high and long twenty-meter jumps, then otherwise it copes with its responsibilities quite well.

To summarize, I would like to note that Polaris has once again raised the bar in the sports SSV class to a new level and created a considerable headache for its competitors. The new American all-terrain vehicle turned out to be powerful, fast and very comfortable. Even by the standards of its sports liter class. Of course, the X DS Turbo is much more powerful than its American counterpart, but, firstly, this turbocharged car will most likely be allocated in a separate class at most competitions and will not be a direct competitor to the RZR XP 1000. And secondly, the cost of the RZR XP 1000 starts at RUB 1,905,420, while the Maverick turbo starts at RUB 2,399,000. And whether all the delights of a “supercharged” all-terrain vehicle are worth almost 500,000 rubles, buyers will have to decide.

From simple and unassuming farm mini-trucks, side-by-side all-terrain vehicles have evolved into uncompromising off-road athletes pumped up with engineering anabolic steroids. And the new Polaris RZR XP1000 is one of the brightest representatives of this tribe.

Of course, the classic four-wheel all-wheel drive “rednecks” have not disappeared from the manufacturers’ lineups, but everyone is talking about innovative 100-horsepower beauties, and not farm carts. Today, the competitive wars in this segment in terms of intensity of passions will surpass many of the annual sluggish automobile disputes from the “who is faster and more powerful” series. The pioneer in the class of such ultimate all-terrain vehicles, as you know, is the Polaris company with its legendary “side” RZR. The next arms race was continued by the all-wheel drive Arctic Cat Wild Cat and the main competitor of the American, the Canadian Can-Am Maverick. It was he who was the first in the world to overcome the 100 hp bar, which is iconic for production cars of this class. With. Polaris’ response was not long in coming: in 2014, the RZR XP1000 appeared with a 107-horsepower engine, and for the 2015 model year, the manufacturer increased the maximum engine performance to 110 “horses”! Parrying, in the fall of 2014, the BRP concern presented to the public the new Maverick X DS Turbo, equipped with a turbocharged power plant producing an impressive 121 hp. With. The comparison of an “atmospheric” car with a turbocharged one, which is incorrect at first glance, is probably still more competent. After all, the “liter” Maverick 1000 X RS has a power of “only” 101 hp. s., so it’s a stretch to say that it’s initially a competitor to the XP1000.

Pumping up the muscles Polaris designers started designing a new leader in the class from scratch, trying not to use most of the ready-made solutions that had been tested for so long on the previous models of the RZR family. In defiance of competitors, who usually use V-twin engines in similar equipment, the XP1000 is equipped with an in-line motor!

The 2-cylinder ProStar powerplant with dual overhead camshafts and electronic fuel injection system develops a class-record naturally aspirated 110 hp. s.—a value that just a few years ago was simply fantastic for a serial side-by-side! The engine's potential seems endless, and its torque reserves are bottomless! I haven't driven a turbocharged Maverick XDS, but the powertrain capabilities of the Polaris RZR XP1000 are amazing. The engine is combined with a PVT variator and gearbox, traditional for the entire family, with two operating modes - rear-wheel drive and, accordingly, all-wheel drive. When the AWD system is activated, front-wheel drive engages when the rear wheels slip and disengages when their traction is restored. The car is equipped with a front suspension of a traditional design for such “athletes” - double A-arms with Walker Evans 2" Needle shock absorbers with remote reservoirs of compensation chambers, rebound and compression hydraulic damping adjustments and wheel travel of 406 mm. The rear suspension is also independent, on trailing arms with a transverse stabilizer and adjustable Walker Evans 2.5″ Needle shock absorbers with a stroke of 457 mm. The suspension travel, by the way, is slightly greater than that of its closest competitor, the Maverick X DS Turbo, and these 25 mm in the front and 51 mm in the rear may be decisive for someone when choosing their sports equipment. Brakes with 2-piston calipers are hydraulic, disc on all four wheels. The steering system is equipped with an EPS electric power steering, which works very correctly, damping well all the irregularities transmitted to the steering wheel during fast driving over rough terrain.

The pilot's cockpit has become slightly larger compared to the previous flagship of the RZR lineup. Good sports seats with lateral support, a larger glove compartment and hard plastic gates that protect the driver and passenger. The huge cyclopean eye of the multifunctional speedometer and bright colored inserts on the dashboard and seats create a very dynamic and harmonious modern image. All the lighting devices on the new RZR are LED and shine almost as standard. Its special cargo platform with a lifting capacity of 136 kg allows you to carry a supply of fuel, tools and spare parts. I think it’s unlikely that the miniature Maverick platform with a carrying capacity of only 92 kg will be able to attach a similar amount of payload.

New leader? To be honest, I don’t really understand who devices with such horsepower are designed for, sensitively reacting to any manipulations with the gas pedal... Even with all-wheel drive connected, the new RZR strives to break the wheels into a mad spin and will definitely try to take the nearest turn in controlled (or not... it depends on your luck) skidding. Perhaps only a professional athlete can get behind the wheel of such a car and immediately drive “with all the money”.

The XP1000 has not just a lot of motor, but perhaps even more than enough. This, by the way, was proven by the Russian summer racing season of 2014, when almost all the prizes in most specialized competitions were won by Polaris riders, who easily “took starts” and overtook competitors on long straights... Here I will allow myself a small lyrical digression: the 2015 season It's going to be very hot. If most of the announced competitions take place, we can expect uncompromising and brutal fights in the Side-by-side class between two sworn competitors RZR and Maverick. Unless, of course, turbocharged cars are universally allocated to a separate racing class. But let's get back to the running tests of the new product. The operation of the power steering could be called standard if it were not for some delay in reactions at high speeds - but in general everything is very predictable and convenient. One of the main advantages of the car is that the RZR does not tend to roll over on its side when cornering, which compares favorably with some competitors. I would also like to say a few words about Walker Evans shock absorbers: their energy capacity is sorely lacking on the cross-country track! They allow you to ride painlessly and quickly over tough “intersections”, but on high jumps they “deflate” almost immediately. So if you want to try to perform the dizzying 30-meter flights from popular Internet videos, then replacing the shock absorbers is guaranteed. But, I repeat, in other cases their energy intensity is quite sufficient. As the ancestor and founder of the class of sports all-terrain vehicles, Polaris was simply obliged to get involved in this very expensive muscle flexing. And it looks like his efforts were not in vain! The Americans managed to create a very stylish, powerful and, most importantly, very fast car, which immediately after its appearance showed who is who on the world sports arena. Of course, the Canadian answer turned out to be very, very eloquent, and in a head-on battle, it is quite possible that Maverick will put the RZR “on its shoulder”... But here there are, in my opinion, several nuances, the main one of which is the possible separation of turbomachines into a separate class, which will inevitably separate competitors into different test groups. The second rather weighty argument is the price. The cost of the Polaris RZR XP1000 starts from 1,905,420 rubles, while the Maverick X DS Turbo starts from 2,399,000 rubles... The difference, you see, is significant. Although whether all the delights of turbocharging are worth almost 500,000 rubles, the buyer will decide. And while I was not able to try out the new “side” from BRP, the XP1000 is clearly the leader in my personal rating.
