Ural Retro motorcycle - a legacy of Soviet motorcycle manufacturing

Of course, one of the most legendary motorcycles - the Ural Solo - has survived from the period of the USSR to the present day without undergoing any fundamental changes. A huge amount of old-style equipment still travels along modern Russian highways, but the Izhevsk Machine Plant constantly made changes and improved its motorcycle.

However, apart from some modifications, the original external details remain unchanged and maintain the same retro style of a bygone era. Only the technical parameters of the motorcycles that were relevant for the moment in time were installed. The Ural Solo motorcycle model series demonstrated today includes both sidecar models and single motorcycles, for example: Ural Retro Solo and Ural Solo ST.

Durability and power of the Ural Retro motorcycle

The Ural Retro Solo motorcycle equipment is known for its increased engine power and long-term wear resistance, thanks to which they handle perfectly on city streets and wide highways.

It is the increased degree of reliability that needs to be given attention. The motorcycle is equipped with a 4-speed gearbox, which has the ability to move backwards, pendulum suspension at the rear, or telescopic suspension at the front. It also has an electric starter, hydraulic front disc brakes and a rear drum brake.

The gasoline tank has a fuel capacity of 19 liters. For safety purposes, specialized arc frames are installed.

Such a specimen is capable of reaching a speed of about 130 km/h. With such data, it can be classified as a heavy weight category, with a mass of 235 kg, but the weight does not have a significant effect on comfortable handling. The motorcycle does not lose its maneuverability and remains a leader among vehicles in an urban environment.

A standard driver's position, a straight, low-slung steering wheel, chrome-trimmed 18-inch wheels with built-in spokes, and in addition to this, a unique optical device that allows you to monitor the road situation - these are the very unique features of this model of motorcycle equipment.

Retro motorcycle Ural M70 is being discontinued

The American headquarters of the Ural company (distributor of the Irbit IMZ plant) announced that sales of the M70 motorcycle model will stop this year. This version appeared in the program of the Ural plant seven years ago and was timed to coincide with the seventieth anniversary of the production of the very first Ural - the M72 motorcycle: according to the company's estimates, 9,799 of these machines served in the army during the war.

The Ural M70 was initially produced in a limited edition: 30 copies with a sidecar (Sidecar) and ten without it (Solo). The M70 version differed externally from standard motorcycles in its retro motifs: the original shape of the gas tank, the nostalgic “gazebo” of the single seat, protective paint and special memorable name tags. In addition, the car had a Marzocchi telescopic front fork and was offered without additional sidecar wheel drive, as it was considered a version for paved roads. Prices were immediately set in foreign currency (IMZ was already working mainly for export): $14,200 for a three-wheeled vehicle and $9,150 for a mono version.

However, the appearance of the M70 coincided with the growing popularity of Ural motorcycles in the United States. In 2011, sales increased by 39%, cars were registered in the garages of celebrities (for example, actors Brad Pitt and Ewan McGregor), and the entire retro version was sold out in two weeks. Therefore, the Ural M70 entered the production program on a permanent basis. But now interest in the M70 is fading: Ural motorcycles are already quite “retro” in themselves, and almost everyone has bought the “seventy”. The fate of the model was decided.

The Ural M70 met its last year of sales with last year's modifications: the car now has an electronic speedometer and additional storage capacity under the stroller seat cushion, and the reverse gear shift has moved to the foot lever. In the American specification, the car is equipped with a 749 cc two-cylinder injection opposed engine with a power of 42 hp, a Marzocchi front fork with feathers with a diameter of 40 mm, Sachs shock absorbers in the pendulum suspensions of the rear wheel and sidecar, a four-piston Brembo disc brake on the front wheel, an electric starter, a Denso generator , NGK spark plugs and spoked wheels with Heidenau tires measuring 4.0x18 inches.

The base MSRP excluding taxes is $16,500 for a khaki car. Plain coloring of other colors will cost another thousand dollars, and camouflage - one and a half thousand. Another thousand dollars is needed to paint the engine and transmission black. However, for Urals in America these are usual prices. Only the base Ural ST is cheaper ($14.5 thousand). Sales of other Ural motorcycle models continue, and original spare parts for the retro model M70, according to promises from the American distributor, will be available until 2028 inclusive.

Standard driver's seat on a Ural Retro motorcycle

The Ural Retro motorcycle may be equipped with a driver's windshield, and split saddles can be easily replaced with one single seat with a fabric or leather cover. All of these upgrades increase the feeling of convenience while traveling.

It is worth noting that the outer shell of the Ural is not much different from the models of the 50s, but its boldness does not go away from this.

It harmoniously combines the classic style of the last century and the modern technological potential of our time.

One of the special models of this Solo series motorcycle is the Ural “Solo-DPS” for patrolling by police. Its package includes an additional wind shield, special signal lights, as well as a modified form of construction for mounting traffic police equipment.

Modern quality Ural - Retro

Despite the presence of a classic boxer engine, some components of the motorcycle were replaced with imported analogues:

  • Ducati electronic ignition.
  • Sachs shock absorbers made in Germany
  • Japanese Keihin carburetors and Denso generator
  • Brembo disc brakes
  • Marzocchi telescopic fork

These components made it possible to significantly increase the reliability of the motorcycle and its performance characteristics, so Ural - Retro is rightfully considered deservedly popular abroad.

Ural Solo ST - a classic of the motorcycle industry in the USSR

Today, the Ural Solo ST model follows the classic traditions of the Ural motorcycle, the production of which began in the Soviet Union. The example that forms its main part comes with stainless steel exhaust pipes, a traditional fuel tank, a tractor-style seat and a black fender at the rear. The standard black finish is used here.

But, when ordering this model, the buyer will receive an offer to order secondary equipment for motorcycle equipment to improve the basic configuration.

Comfort

Ural Solo ST models are equipped with two transformable seats: standard single-seat solutions are equipped with seats covered in rubber. There is also the option to choose seats for one seat.

First and foremost, current models are designed for a comfortable ride on asphalt surfaces. But this does not stop him from driving on country roads and off-road. The track will feel very confident, and when turning, it will be more stable. The model shows excellent aerodynamic parameters.

The manufacturer has provided the equipment with excellent shock absorption, so that minor road irregularities will not be felt. An improved braking system significantly increases the degree of safety while driving, especially when maneuvering in an urban environment.

Parameters of the Ural Solo ST motorcycle

Moving smoothly to the machine characteristics, it should be noted that there are no special differences from the standard properties of the IMZ models. It has a good two-cylinder engine with a volume of 745 cc. see. An up-to-date ignition system will allow you to start the engine simply and quickly. Equipped with a four-speed gearbox. The rear wheel moves due to the driveshaft. Fuel consumption per 100 km of city driving is 5-6 liters.

History of Ural Retro Solo 2012

09.24.2012 It would probably be wrong to say that the idea of buying a Russian motorcycle came to me suddenly. Back in 2010, when selling my Ural M67-36, I told myself: “The time will come when you will buy yourself a NEW Ural!” Of course, this was just a conspiracy with my conscience. Somehow it turns out that it is quite difficult for me to part with those things that have belonged to me for some time. I didn’t even drive 1000 km in that Urals, but I still felt guilty.

I had the same feeling of guilt when I sold my Golda, which died for a long time due to a faulty box. At the time of its sale, I had already decided on my next motorcycle. My next motorcycle will be NEW.

And one day in September I was wandering aimlessly around the Internet. Once again I wandered onto the website of the Moscow office that sells our motorcycles, Plamen LLC. In 2010, also in September, I took my Minsk “Lesnik” there, which helped me out in the 2012 season, when I was left without wheels. To be honest, I was not without surprise when I saw that the guys had Ural motorcycles and two motels, “Solo St” and “Retro-Solo”. I called them and asked about the availability of motorcycles. It turns out that these three motorcycles arrived quite recently.

The next day, and it was Wednesday, I already arrived at the salon, where the manager met me. He showed me the available Ural motorcycles, there were three of them: two “Solo St” (black and beige) and a cherry “Retro-Solo”. I started looking at them and then a voice came from behind me: “Hello!” Turning around, I recognized the man who called out to me as Andrei, my friend whom I met in the fall of 2007. This year, fans of Czechoslovak Java motorcycles celebrated some date on the Mountain, among them was a great admirer and lover of these motorcycles. On the same day, we drove with him a couple of tens of kilometers in the rain: he was an old woman in Java, and 3.114 in Minsk. Since then we have seen him a couple of times. It turns out that he works in this salon and oversees the Java motorcycle sector.

After much torment and questioning of everyone present in the salon, the choice fell on the Ural “Retro-Solo”, which I really didn’t like in the photo on the Internet. The cost of the presented device is 280 thousand rubles. Without hesitation, I paid in advance for it and went home. The next day I picked up the motorcycle and registered it with the traffic police.

Now a few words about the device. With the motorcycle in the cabin, I received two sets of keys, which include: the ignition key, the gas filler flap key, the steering column key and the glove compartment key. The motorcycle is equipped with a tool in a branded case, which has nowhere to put, it belongs in the stroller, two cans of paint (black and cherry), an instruction manual and a service book.

A separate word should be given to printed material. The instructions are for a motorcycle produced in 2008, the technical specifications indicate the wrong engine power, they underestimated it by as much as 5 hp. The PTS has 45 hp. The paper on which the instructions and service book are written looks like recycled materials. For this IMZ minus. You can also give the factory a minus for the text part of the instructions; it seems to me that the text is translated from English. Those. Initially, this instruction was written for the American market, but when this instruction was needed to sell the motorcycle in Russia, it was simply translated.

Now I'll turn my attention to the motorcycle. In appearance, not a single element of the motorcycle gives away its place of birth, that is, there are no weld beads, crooked welds, broken bolt heads, paint chips, scratches, etc. anywhere. Although if you look closely, you can see the proud “Made in Russia” on the turn signals, the no less proud “GOST .....” is written on the speedometer in Russian, but the main scale is in miles...

I’ll give a few words to the motorcycle’s equipment: Japanese Keihin carburetors, Japanese Denso generator, German valve springs, valves, gears in the Herchog gearbox, Italian Marzcochi fork, Brembo brakes, Domino steering panels, Ducati ignition, Japanese gas tap with 4 positions. The tires with the self-explanatory name Duro are a little annoying. We plan to select sizes from more famous manufacturers. The mufflers are made of stainless steel and begin to acquire a noble golden color. Naturally there is an electric starter.

At the time of writing this material, the motorcycle had traveled a little over 300 km, I did not notice any problems except one: the valve in the right cylinder knocks a little. Maybe it’s the influence of the summer spent in Minsk, where the valves cannot knock by definition, and the knock just seems to me. The lack of a fuel gauge is also annoying, although the 19-liter tank allows you to feel confident on the road. According to preliminary estimates, fuel consumption (AI-92) does not exceed 6 liters. While I don’t accelerate the motorcycle more than 80 km/h, it’s running in. Run-in up to 1500 km. Soon there will be a trip to zero maintenance, which the dealer does at 500 km. Although this action is not indicated in the service book, I was recommended to do it. There I will express my suspicions about the valve. The motorcycle warranty is 1 year or 10,000 km. TO-1 at 1000 km, TO-2 at 5000 km, then every 5000 km.

The impressions from the motorcycle are excellent: confident acceleration, strong traction in all gears. A separate word must be said about the brakes. When you press the front brake lever, it feels like a huge anchor is being thrown out from behind and biting into the asphalt. The brakes are super!!!

09.26.2012 Today, at a mileage of 560 km, I noticed a slight leak of oil from the air filter, i.e. oil is driven from the breather into the air filter box. As a result, the starter became somewhat dirty. The junctions between the cylinders and the crankcase also sweated a little. I went to the dealer today and pre-arranged for the first maintenance and reported the shortcomings I had identified. Next week on Monday I’ll take it to the maintenance center, where these shortcomings will be eliminated and scheduled measures will be carried out. The motorcycle continues to make me happy, my hands are just itching to give it a burn. I haven’t overclocked it to more than 80 yet, but it has great potential.

10/12/2012 I picked up the Ural from the service center today. For all the maintenance I paid 4200 with consumables. The knocking of the valves was removed and the fasteners were tightened. Oil was pressing out of the breather due to a level that was slightly higher than the maximum. Now the motorcycle runs smoothly, but there is a metallic knock that was previously inaudible due to the valves. The servicemen sent a letter to the factory, and according to the recommendations they received, they checked everything - everything is normal. So, as they say, let’s dance according to ****! I will report on further adventures. The weather is just letting us down, the motorcycle has become dirty and ugly.

10/16/2012 Today such a story happened to me. The motorcycle ran very unevenly, constantly fired, rode on one cylinder, and eventually stopped altogether. The starter turns, but does not engage. Well, I think: “That’s it, ruin the Russian motorcycle!” But no. the faucet is on reserve, turned a little and off we go again. Gasoline, it turns out, has run out. I drove 230 km from a full tank to reserve.

04/18/2013 Hello again! I picked up my Retra from hibernation on Tuesday. The motorcycle was standing in a cold garage, the terminals were removed from the battery. After connecting the terminals, the motorcycle started the first time without recharging the battery. So far I have traveled about 150 km. Among the troubles for today: the low beam burned out. At the end of last season, I lost the reverse gear handle and two screws that secured the handle bracket to the tank due to vibration. The handle was purchased from officials in St. Petersburg, the screws were purchased at an auto store for 2 rubles/piece.

04/28/2013 Well, dear listeners! He promised everything honestly!!! At 1669 km the spark disappeared and the motorcycle no longer wants to start!!! Most likely, the ignition unit and coil burned out, which, by the way, were made by Italian specialists from little-known . As I understand it, next week I’ll take it to the service center for warranty, and at the same time we’ll check whether this warranty works.

05/03/2013 Today the only and unique specialist in the Urals came to see me. I repaired everything, replaced the Hall sensor, and adjusted the ignition. The Ural is rolling again. I received a lot of useful advice on how to operate a motorcycle.

05/06/2013 WARRANTY repairs cost me 3,500 rubles. 3000 - on-site mechanic work, 500 - used sensor, no new one available. This is the guarantee at Plamen LLC. Today I went to them and asked: how can I get my money back? The mechanic who carried out the repair will write a report on the malfunction and submit it to Plamen LLC. Plamen sends it to the factory, where they study the report and make their own conclusion. The faulty part is also sent to the factory. Only even I understand that the Hall sensor cannot fail due to the fault of the motorcycle owner; it simply burned out and did not exhaust its service life. But a conclusion is needed... In general, I roughly expected this approach, I don’t know how to proceed with the guarantee: stay on it or jump off. I can mix butter myself, and I can do a lot of other things.

05/10/2013 By the way, according to Vasya PZ, my ignition is equipped with a Hall sensor from a carb eight. I bought two pieces in reserve, they look exactly the same. Only in the native language is the inscription “USA”. The problem is in the connectors; in the Urals all connectors are splash-proof. I'll find a couple, solder them and test them. Now the mileage has exceeded 2000. Due to its crookedness, the tool box hatch was lost on the road and the bolt did not tighten properly. You cannot buy the hatch separately, only assembled with a tool box.

05/15/2013 I haven’t written about my adventures for six whole days. And today they happened. On the right boiler, the rubber flange burst, which connects the boiler and the carburetor and also serves as a support for the carburetor. As a result, the motorcycle fired and sucked air. I went to Planet Zhelezyaku, he was there a couple of months ago - out of stock, they say: never was! But I definitely saw it when I bought oil filters from them. Okay, for luck I looked into the basement on Aviamotornaya. The seller said that they have such garbage. What a success!!!

True, the previous flange model is available, without carburetor support. Costs 100 rubles. I changed it on the spot and drove off. Upon arrival home, I looked at the cost of the original - 880 rubles. And here again is a situation that I don’t understand. The Russian flange looks in no way inferior to the brand name “KOK”, but the factory installs an imported one. Which costs 8.8 times more. Perhaps these are first impressions and operation will show something different. Time will show. Mileage today is 2300 km.

05/30/2013 Another small anniversary on the speedometer - 3000 km. There were no new breakdowns. Today I went to Plamen and talked with the management. The conversation turned out to be constructive, the Hall sensor has already been ordered, the carburetor flange will also be replaced. By the way, today 4 strollers were assembled there, which have already been sold. As I understand it, IMZ will sell more than 100 motorcycles in Russia this year. People seem to have tried the Urals, or maybe they have had enough of foreign motorcycles and quads.

05/31/2013 Today, out of the blue, in a traffic jam, I spun at a snail's pace. I didn’t even understand why I fell, I did everything as usual. Most likely, the front wheel fell into a longitudinal crack that was on the asphalt, and the steering wheel broke. The arc saved the left cylinder, although initially, judging by the amount of gasoline that leaked out, I thought that I had broken the cap. Everything worked out fine. As a result of this misunderstanding, I have the following losses: a scratch on the left arch and a dent on the mirror housing. By the way, trends about motorcycle fraternity: not a single motorcycle brother stopped. One even drove past me when I lay down on the asphalt and looked at the cylinder from top to bottom. So the theory about the absence of a motorcycle brotherhood is confirmed. One guy stopped in an old American sedan and offered a tool. It turns out his friend recently took the Ural Solo St and asked permission to photograph the motorcycle. I don’t know what would happen to the cylinder if it fell at a higher speed, but in this case the arcs worked. Although at first I had certain concerns about the functionality of these arcs.

06/23/2013 On Friday, at mileage 4584, maintenance 2 was done, which is recommended by the manufacturer in the period 4900-5100. There was a mechanic in my area, so we decided to do it. It turns out we have a whole cell of Uralists here, and also Retrovodov. The motorcycle continues to please me; there are no new breakdowns.

07/08/2013 After maintenance, oil began to leak from the oil filter, the mechanic did not replace the gasket with a new one. Oil drips onto the exhaust - it stinks and smokes. In general everything is good.

07/31/2013 The mileage is currently about 5300, I have lost all the documents for all my vehicles and driver's license. Just today everything was restored, all that’s left is to get insurance for the Urals and you’ll be able to ride.

08/10/2013 Today, finally, I had the opportunity to replace the rubber sealing ring in the oil filter. After the replacement, the oil leakage from this unit stopped. As expected, the ring broke and did not provide a tight connection between the oil filter housing and the crankcase. Now it is clear that this ring is disposable and must be changed every time the oil filter is changed. Yesterday I took a ride to Ryazan, 320 km round trip. Consumption on the highway is significantly lower than consumption in the city. The speed was kept at 100 - 110 km/h. There are no new breakdowns.

08/16/2013 Another anniversary - 6000 km on the speedometer. The motorcycle today looks like this. Former stripes on the wheels - flippers, inserts. I bought them back in the winter and only installed them now. They look cool in the picture and look great in real life, but they get dirty quickly. On the rear wheel on the right, the flipper has come out a little from its seat and is rubbing against the rubber of the cardan, causing a black stripe to appear. In general, the thing is not bad, but it doesn’t last long. On average it lasts for 5,000 km. I will look for tires with a white edge for 18 radius, I may have to order them overseas. Today I noticed oil leaks from the rear gearbox cover. So far I have not determined the reason. At TO-2, Mobil 1 10W60 engine oil was poured into the box, not the transmission.

09/02/2013 The speedometer shows 7500. Oil is leaking from the oil seal. And Retra needs to be washed, otherwise the motorcycle is already starting to become overgrown with dirt.

09/24/2013 A little more than a year has passed in operation of the Ural-IMZ-8.1239 motorcycle with the beautiful name “Retro Solo”. The mileage is currently 8300. The motorcycle is cool, I like it.

To be continued…
