Electric starter does not work

Starter relay does not work

Starter button doesn't work

A failed electric starter button cannot close the circuit and supply power to the relay and starter, respectively. The button needs to be replaced. Sometimes wd-40 helps.

Brake contact (toad) does not work

As you know, modern scooters cannot be started from an electric starter without pressing the handle of one of the brakes. Each brake lever is equipped with a closing contact that turns on the brake light during braking. It is also responsible for closing the circuit to the electric starter.

Make sure that when you press the brake handle, the brake light is activated.

Contacts have come loose or oxidized

The starter contacts, as well as the starter relay chip, could have oxidized or come off. Inspect the contacts carefully and the quality of their connections. Make sure there is no oxide on the contacts.

Bendix doesn't work


If, when you try to start the scooter with an electric starter, the electric starter itself rotates and does not engage with the crankshaft, most likely the bendix has failed.

Dead battery

The scooter will not start from the starter if the battery is dead. A dead battery cannot crank the crankshaft with the proper force. Sometimes, when the battery is dead, the bendix does not transmit force to the crankshaft and we simply hear the starter twisting, as happens with a faulty bendix. Make sure the battery is charged.

The battery has failed

Over time, the battery capacity decreases, especially when used year-round. Such a battery, even if fully charged, instantly loses capacity under load. Even a fully charged battery, when trying to start it with the starter, can reduce the voltage to 6-8 volts. Starting the scooter with an electric starter in this situation will not work. The battery needs to be replaced.

Fuse blown

The fuse located near the battery could simply have blown.

If the turn signals, brake light and horn work, then everything is in order. If not, change the fuse.

Crankshaft seals are leaking

Check the crankshaft seals. If at least one of them shows signs of leaks, starting the scooter from the starter, especially when cold, will be problematic. Leaky seals need to be replaced.

Low compression

The most common reason for owners of scooters and mopeds to visit a workshop is that the scooter will not start from the starter, although all the electrics and battery are in order.

There is one rule, it’s better to remember - if the scooter starts normally with a kick starter, but doesn’t want to start with an electric starter, although the starter cranks the crankshaft perfectly and with sufficient force, the fault will almost always be low compression.

What does it mean? Most likely, your piston is already running out and you will need to change the piston with rings at best.

At the same time, question number two always arises - why does the scooter start from kickstarter? The answer is that when we rotate the kickstarter with our foot, especially when it is sharp, we turn the crankshaft faster.

A simple and understandable example can be given - remember the old pump with which you wanted to inflate the inner tube of your bicycle or scooter. Often these pumps do not have a sealed cuff that does not fit tightly enough to the walls. If you tried to slowly pump the chamber, all the air simply passed through the leaks in the cuff. And if you pumped quickly and with good effort, everything worked out. It’s the same here.

How to check PP with a multimeter on a moped?

The relay regulator on a Chinese scooter is checked using a multimeter with a voltmeter function. For this purpose, a simple DT-830 (or equivalent) is usually used. It is better to carry out diagnostics and measurement of output voltage with the device removed.

Verification algorithm:

  1. You need to unscrew the fairing with the central phase and find on the frame a device with 4 wires: red, green, yellow and white.

  6. If at idle this value is 16 V or higher, and with a sharp increase in engine speed it jumps to 25 V, the device does not stabilize the voltage and, therefore, does not work. With such readings, the device must be replaced with a new one.

Since I created a comprehensive site, I want to devote a little time to Chinese mopeds, or rather, today we will touch on the voltage relay regulator of Viper, Delta, Alfa mopeds. I found the relevant information and want to share it with you.

The wiring of the Chinese mopeds Viper, Delta, Alfa is very interesting. The ignition is separate, the lighting is separate, which is similar in many other scooters and motorcycles. But the lighting itself is very confusing. We have two lighting branches, one is the electricity from the generator, the other is from the battery. At the same time, the generator itself also powers the battery. And to connect these two wires, a voltage regulator relay is used.

It is designed to rectify the voltage and stabilize it so that the battery and lighting do not receive more current than usual (remember how the light bulbs burned in old motorcycles, all because there was no stabilizer). This is the main task of this voltage regulator relay. And if you look at the number of wires of such a relay-regulator, we see four of them. One, green, is the ground (in scooters the ground is often green), the other is red, it goes to the battery. The third and fourth come from the generator. And here you can get confused. Each wire comes with a voltage of 12 V, but if you look closely at the structure of the generator, it is clear that one has a slightly lower voltage, this is done for the sake of relativity, so that the relay can compare two voltages. It is important here not to confuse the wires, since in some scooters they are marked with white and yellow colors, while in others there are two white ones. But they are not the same, they cannot be confused.

By the way, if you look at the wiring in the Viper Active moped, the relay-regulator has a pink wire instead of a white one. Therefore, remember, when comparing wires or other relay regulators, white is equivalent to pink. There are other voltage regulator relays, where the colors are even more changed, but more about that later.

So, the purpose of the regulator relay has been explained. Voltage relay regulators for Viper, Alfa, Delta mopeds are interchangeable. They can be easily changed, moreover, spare parts for the Viper moped are hard to find, and here many will have to take a voltage regulator relay from an Alfa or Delta scooter, since they cannot find the “original” one. The difference here will be in the connections, you will have to resolder, and as has already been mentioned, in Viper they often use pink instead of white.

Likewise, generators can be changed. The difference between them is the number of wires wound and the colors. Also, the connection is different when the wires come out, so here you will have to resolder or simply connect without a “mother-father”.

In Viper mopeds, the voltage regulator relay is located under the seat. In order not to confuse it with another wiring element, we are looking for a spare part with ribs, since the relay-regulator requires cooling and they will definitely be on the metal case. But the sizes may be different. This relay is very similar to the Minsk or Voskhod motorcycle switch. That's all for now...

How to replace a faulty relay regulator on a scooter?

If the charging current is not supplied to the battery contacts when the generator is working properly, the stabilizer needs to be changed. Replacing it yourself is not difficult.

To do this you need to do the following:

  1. Place the scooter on the central support.
  2. Find the location of the device in a specific moped model. If you can’t find it right away, you can use the instruction manual.
  3. Dismantle the cladding. Depending on the moped model, the stabilizer may be located on the front (under the front plastic), in the rear, or under the seat. In this case, the underseat space is removed along with the seat.
  4. Unscrew the device from its seat while maintaining the fasteners. As a rule, the relay is attached to the scooter frame with a bolt, or less often with a self-tapping screw.
  5. Disconnect the connector and secure the new regulator with the fastener. The installed device must have a pinout and connector similar to the one replaced, and be suitable in terms of parameters for this particular scooter model.
  6. Connect the relay-regulator on the scooter to a standard connector and assemble the remaining spare parts in the reverse order of disassembly.

Service Features

Unfortunately, suppliers of motorcycle equipment do not always take into account the specific features of a particular type of vehicle, assuming that low price is more important. In particular, the majority of mopeds supplied to Russia under the ALPHA brand are not designed for our climatic and road conditions.

This manifests itself in the following:

  1. Most mopeds are used off-road (in rural areas, for trips to nature, fishing, etc.). And factory tires, alloy rims, springs and shock absorbers are not designed for such loads;
  2. The quality of gasoline and oil is also far from ideal, which affects the performance parameters of the moped;
  3. The moped is not intended for operation at sub-zero temperatures.

Advice: The wiring of the Alpha moped especially suffers from harsh climates, since its insulation is made of cheap plastic. At sub-zero temperatures it becomes brittle and breaks down. Experienced owners, after purchase, replace it with rubber-insulated wiring.

In the same way as wiring for an Alpha moped, other “diseases” of Alpha mopeds can be cured with the help of replacement. In particular:

  1. Factory tires are replaced with more wear-resistant ones;
  2. Alloy wheels are replaced by traditional spoked rims;
  3. Shock absorbers are reinstalled from domestic motorcycles.

Features of electrical equipment

Unlike domestic motorcycles and mopeds, Alfa already in its basic version has a number of advantages:

  1. Electronic 12V ignition;
  2. Electric starter;
  3. Electronic tachometer on the instrument panel.

For reference: electronic ignition ensures trouble-free engine starting and stable operation in all operating modes. A simple circuit and the ease of replacing failed components with your own hands greatly simplifies the use of the vehicle.

Energy sources

The moped uses a circuit with a battery power source. The manufacturer does not recommend its operation without a battery, and the wiring diagram for the Alpha moped is additionally equipped with a relay regulator (see also the wiring diagram for UAZ 31512).

The six-coil generator also copes well with its duties:

  1. Maintains voltage throughout the entire engine speed range;
  2. Ensures that the headlights and headlights work while driving.

For reference: the factory instructions do not allow the installation of additional lighting fixtures. It is also prohibited to use headlight lamps on a moped that exceed the power specified in the technical documentation.

The stabilizer has an aluminum body and plastic contacts, each of which has its own wire. Each contact has its own wire color. This makes it convenient to connect the device to the wires if the plastic connector is worn out. The wires must be connected to the contacts according to the electrical diagram (Figure 3).

Moped maintenance

Like any vehicle, Alpha mopeds require routine maintenance, the essence of which boils down to:

  1. Replacement of parts and assemblies whose service life has expired;
  2. Setting up and restoring the factory parameters of the main components and assemblies;
  3. Visual inspection of the moped to identify damage.

Chinese engines quite confidently “maintain” 20,000 km on our domestic fuels and lubricants without breakdowns or overhaul of the piston group. The main thing is to change the oil in a timely manner, especially during the break-in period.

If you do not operate the moped in harsh conditions (winter, cross-country racing, etc.), then all oil seals and rubber seals will also last a long time.

Tip: Change your air filter often. This will save the carburetor and make it easier to start the engine in all operating modes.
