What determines fuel consumption?
What is the first thing that interests a person buying a motorcycle?
Power that ensures its speed, throttle response, ease of landing, wheel diameter and other indicators on which maneuverability and cross-country ability depend, and, perhaps last but not least, fuel consumption. They start thinking about it later if it clearly exceeds the normative one. Motorcycle tourists are usually concerned about this during long trips: the excessive “appetite” of the engine leads to unnecessary delays for refueling and therefore sharply reduces the average speed, or even threatens an unforeseen stop in a place remote from the gas station. Why are most motorcyclists so indifferent to fuel consumption? This can probably be explained by one thing - the low price of gasoline in our country. So low that we don’t think about the enormous social labor that was spent on its production, about that. that although our reserves of raw materials are large, they are not unlimited and there is no need to take excess from nature. Fuel is figuratively called the bread of industry. But if we have learned to handle bread with care, then, to be honest, we often spend gasoline without looking
The designers are putting in a lot of effort. to improve the fuel efficiency of the car by at least a few percent. But they only create the possibility of saving, and the rest depends on the owner of the car, and it is the duty of each driver to take all measures. so as not to waste a single gram of gasoline unnecessarily.
What affects fuel consumption and what can be done to reduce it? Operating fuel consumption depends on many factors. We cannot influence some of them, such as weather and road conditions. But others are almost completely dependent on us. We will talk about them.

View topic - who has what fuel consumption? But on almost any motorcycle you can install either specialized or universal luggage systems, thanks to which the carrying capacity increases dramatically. Our and your knowledge now allows us to evaluate the influence of descent and ascent on speed, but it is not worth drawing these curves on the same graph; it will be overly cluttered. |
- Mobility, maneuverability. Where the car will inevitably get stuck in a traffic jam, the bike has every chance to avoid obstacles, so the time savings are undeniable.
- Speed. Motorcycles, especially sports bikes, are considered higher-speed transportation.
Engine and motorcycle condition
When running a new car, there is no need to talk about fuel consumption. During this period, the fuel mixture should be enriched to ensure proper cooling and lubrication. In addition, in a non-run-in engine, power losses due to friction between parts are high. At the end of the break-in, as indicated in the instructions, it is necessary to change the carburetor adjustment, that is, by lowering the needle, slightly lean the mixture. This will significantly reduce fuel consumption, especially at partial loads, when interruptions due to excessive enrichment of the mixture cease. At the same time, exhaust smoke is reduced, less carbon deposits are deposited in the engine and exhaust system, and spark plugs operate in more favorable conditions. As you know, an engine can develop maximum power with a slightly enriched mixture, at the cost of a significant increase in fuel consumption, and it operates most economically with a slightly lean mixture, to which the carburetor of a road motorcycle is mainly “tuned”. A too lean mixture, sharply reducing power, ultimately leads to an increase in fuel consumption, since the engine operates inefficiently in this case. In addition, a lean mixture can cause accelerated wear. This is especially dangerous for a two-stroke engine lubricated only by oil. contained in the fuel mixture. Its depletion accordingly impoverishes the lubrication of parts. Therefore, the use of jets with reduced throughput, lowering the carburetor metering needle to the limit, and thoughtlessly changing the air purifier are not so innocent “experiments.” There are many cases of damage and even destruction of engine components as a result of such experiments. This means that you should not save on gasoline beyond what the motorcycle manufacturer’s instructions allow. Engine repairs sometimes turn out to be much more expensive.
The ignition system also affects engine efficiency, although not to the same extent as is sometimes thought. Of course, if it is faulty, the mixture in the cylinders ignites poorly or irregularly - engine power drops and fuel consumption increases. Every missed flash is fuel. thrown down the drain in its purest form. As for the ignition timing value, experience has shown that it is better to set its average value from those allowed by the factory for a given engine. Otherwise, it works less economically.
But even with an excellent engine, your motorcycle will be power hungry if you do not pay due attention to its chassis. Fuel consumption increases from anything that increases driving resistance: poorly inflated tires. overtightened and unlubricated chain drive, brake pads rubbing against the drum, etc. Some consider these to be small things. But. When added up, “little things” can negate the advantages of the motor.
So what should you choose?
For this money, a design that is truly worthy of its name and which has hardly become outdated in ten years, a rear suspension with a monoshock absorber and disc brakes on both wheels of a 17-inch sportbike size. 15 9 8 11 number of cylinders 1 1 1 1 stroke 4 4 4 4 Number of gears 4 4 4 4 Cooling air-oil air air Drive chain chain chain chain Curb weight, kg 74 75 75 71 Maximum speed, km h 85 80 80 85 Gas tank volume, l 5 5.
Motorcycle load and additional equipment
Motorcyclists know that when operating a vehicle with a side trailer, fuel consumption increases sharply, and they take it for granted. But equipping the motorcycle with knee and petro guards. trunk, many do not think about how this will affect the performance of the car, including fuel consumption.
Meanwhile, the simplest low-streamliner flaps in most cases increase the movement resistance of the motorcycle. This is immediately followed by fuel burnout. This is why refined, streamlined shapes are so desirable for shields, which simultaneously improve the stability of the motorcycle on the road and increase riding safety.
When equipping your motorcycle before a tourist trip, do not rush to place large items on the side platforms of the trunk, no matter how tempting it may be. Two full-fledged tourist backpacks stacked in this way increase the frontal area of the car with the driver by approximately 40-50%. Why not a motorcycle with a sidecar!
Let's also pay attention to the seat and clothing of the driver and passenger. The one sitting in the back wants to see not only everything around, but also in front, so he tries to lean out from behind the driver. This manner is not only dangerous, but also increases resistance to movement. and therefore fuel consumption.
Many have seen the luxurious leather overalls the “ring” racers perform in. Such clothing not only protects them from injury in case of a fall. It is also important that a suit that fits tightly to the body makes it more streamlined. And vice versa. The effect of clothes that rinse and flap loudly, threatening to tear in the wind, reduces speed and increases fuel consumption. How does the weight of the motorcycle with driver and cargo affect it? On good flat roads with minor inclines and turns, its effect is small, if, of course, the tire pressure corresponds to the load. But when you are moving, for example, on a mountain road with numerous turns and steep climbs, or simply along city streets, where there are many intersections and traffic lights, weight already significantly increases fuel consumption. After all, such a motorcycle is more difficult to accelerate, and this has to be done around every turn or traffic light.
Advantages of the car
- Comfort. In the cabin you can hide from bad weather, use the air conditioning in hot weather, and turn on the heater in cold weather. The motorcyclist is exposed to all winds and not protected from precipitation.
- Possibility of all-season use of the car. Motorized vehicles in Russia are mainly used from mid-spring to mid-autumn, when the air temperature is not too low. Even the warmest clothes will not protect you in cold weather at speed.
- Cabin capacity. The motorcycle is designed for two people (except for models with sidecars), most cars can accommodate 4 more passengers in addition to the driver. Even infants can be transported in a special car seat, but children under 12 years of age are prohibited from being transported in the back seat of a motorcycle.
A car is transport for the whole family
- Lots of space for luggage. The car has a spacious standard trunk, another one can be installed on the roof, and there is also space in the cabin for hand luggage.
Synchronizing carburetors
If you are the owner of an iron horse with a carburetor fuel supply, for example, a Kawasaki W650, and you feel vibration when the engine is running, you should pay special attention to the fuel system. Motorcycle manufacturers recommend synchronizing carburetors after every 6 thousand km traveled. Other indications for the procedure are:
- The above vibration
- Fuel system clogged
- Uneven wear of components,
- Increased fuel consumption.
Those who love working with iron and mechanics can perform the manipulations themselves. To do this, you will need special synchronizing vacuum gauges. The rest can contact the service, where the service will be completed quickly enough and will cost less than buying a special device for synchronization.

We are undergoing maintenance
In addition to tire pressure, it is worth monitoring other comfortable driving conditions, for example:
- An adjusted, clean chain will improve transmission efficiency and reduce energy transfer to the rear wheel.
- A properly functioning braking system will improve the vehicle's response to pressing the brake lever.
- Filling the motorcycle with oil in a timely manner is the key to proper operation of the fuel system elements.
- The proper condition of the chassis and wheels means the correct reaction of the equipment to any maneuvering, the absence of vibrations and other deviations from the norm that entail additional gasoline consumption.
- A tuned ignition will help avoid malfunction of spark plugs and inefficient combustion of fuel.
In addition to the scheduled technical inspection, do not forget about the extraordinary one, which should be carried out if any of the systems operates suspiciously.
Suzuki Van-Van 125
The first on the list is the Suzuki Van-Van 125, its owners affectionately call it “van vanych”. He is already approaching retirement age; the first copies were released back in 1970. The model looks old-fashioned, but is still popular among classic lovers.
The 125 cc engine is capable of accelerating the bike to 110 km per hour, it is powered by an injector, fuel consumption is about 3 liters per 100 km.
The dashboard also has a classic look; there is only a mechanical speedometer, no tachometer.
The wheels are 18 inch, with wide tires on the rear wheel; although the ground clearance is 20 cm, it is still not worth flying over curbs; the bike does not have crankcase protection installed.

Its handling is good, so even if you turn the throttle or drop the clutch too hard, nothing critical will happen, and it has a good braking system. In the Category A course we learn to use the front and rear brakes as well as the clutch and throttle, but it takes time to master all four things smoothly. |
Comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of automobile and motorcycle transport But, let us remind you that in reality no one drives at this speed while sitting, so either the true speed is even higher, or the power consumed is somewhat less. perform some work within a second - for example, lifting a load weighing 10 kg to a height of 1 meter per second, you will have to develop a power of 10 kilograms per second. |
