Review and technical characteristics of ktm 85

Technical parameters of the model

The Ktm 85 sx has quite attractive quality indicators, thanks to which there is a demand for the motorcycle:

Fuel tank volume5 l.
Engine2-stroke 1-cylinder liquid cooled
Engine capacity85 cu. cm

Suspensions (front; rear)Inverted telescopic fork; pendulum with monoshock absorber

Since the KTM 85 motorcycle is intended for teenagers, its weight and dimensions are quite miniature. The simple design is at the same time highly durable and reliable - any cross-country equipment must meet these requirements. The responsive suspension with a travel of more than 25 cm takes on all the unevenness of the road surface and sharp turns. Disc brakes improve the model's handling, increasing the level of safety for the novice motorcyclist. It should be noted that the frame of the equipment is made of chrome-molybdenum steel - this determined not only the correct geometry, but also good stability, balancing, and controllability.

The KTM 85 sx motorcycle, information about all the characteristics of which is still unknown, has a fuel tank measuring 5 liters. Considering the low fuel consumption, this volume of the gas tank will be enough for any trips on a specialized route. The stylish modern design of the motorcycle (painted with graffiti), as well as a minimum of plastic parts, made the model more attractive and interesting. Despite the high cost of the equipment (about 300 thousand rubles), the 85 cc model has its fans from the category of people who are not accustomed to saving on the education of their children.

Advantages and disadvantages

The KTM 85 has a whole list of advantages that drown out many disadvantages, including high cost:

  • High quality build.
  • Use of ultra-strong and lightweight materials.
  • Simplicity and light weight design.
  • Reliable self-cleaning disc brakes.
  • Suspension with enough travel for off-road racing.
  • Stylish appearance.
  • Powerful protectors.
  • Comfortable fit.
  • Excellent maneuverability.

There are also weaknesses, among them:

  • Almost complete lack of engine protection.
  • Seat height too high.
  • The cost of the motorcycle, according to potential buyers, is too high.

It’s true what they say - never give up. I never had any special love for the “orange” motorcycle industry, and I never dreamed about them (yes, even secretly))). But sooner or later, any endurist will come to the conclusion that he needs motocross lessons. This is how an orange baby KTM 85sx appeared in our garage.

The decision took a long time to make, there were different options, including replacing the Sherpa with something more “hard”. We analyzed exactly which tasks I needed to complete with a new spender, in general, we didn’t rush to give away the money. As a result, the choice was actually between the 85k class and the 150 crf 4t from Honda. For a very simple reason - given my size, most motorcycles are objectively high and heavy for me, and it is recommended to develop skills on light and small ones in order to fully control it, feel the impact of your actions and feel that you are controlling it, and not it controlling you (namely This is how I feel, for example, on a 250m EXC from KTM). However, it’s not only about height (although it’s very difficult to kick a tall motorcycle with my height, especially in enduro conditions), but also about the specifics of the class of motorcycles - buying for a beginner girl A cross-country bike of an adult size, and even a 2-stroke one, is also very, very stupid.

Well, that’s it. In fact, it turned out that the 85k is easier to find than the Honda, and the 150k is rather exotic. By the way, there are more “live” 85k from KTM than “Japanese”. Well, maybe it was a coincidence, of course, but all the Kawasakis and other Yamahas turned out to be such baker-shop goers that they carry more than they ride. Many people dissuaded me because... 85s are very strange motorcycles, with character and features. After reading a lot of information, I had no illusions about sports equipment - yes, all this repair, consumables, pistons, etc., etc.

The feeling I have is quite funny: this baby simultaneously makes me squeal with delight about the weight, ergonomics, and the joy of driving uphill and especially downhill (I used to be afraid on Sherpa, now I love descents!), and at the same time I am stunned by the difficult to predict throttle handle. On the 85k it is shorter and twitchier than many people think, and the front brakes are better than expected - of course, this is in my case, because the motorcycle is designed for a short rider of 50 kg, consider a teenager 11-15 years old, although a fully grown man The open handle on this moto gives, they say, a good feeling. The lack of engine braking, by the way, surprised me less than the throttle response and the behavior of small wheels in the sand. Actually, on the first trip to the cross-country track in the mixed sand, I performed a good flight in a turn and walked for a week with a blue hip and a sore neck - and because “Sherpogas” and “Sherpoergonomics” did their job, I reflexively stood in the usual stance and opened gas as I was used to, and the turn suddenly turned out to be closer than I expected.

Out of habit, the different clutch and throttle control made me take off at first a little better than in the videos about “horse, slow down,” and the kicking turned out to be more difficult than I expected from myself. Now I kick instantly and have learned to move away in a narrow space without trying to get stuck on the nearest tree or fence. Well, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but yes, as smoothly and smoothly as “the kindest motorcycle in the world” - Sherpa, this Zhikalka is not drives and won't start.

And the 85 is also wonderful because if you have problems, they come out immediately: if you grab the steering wheel, the stance is crooked, you get uncontrollable jerks of the gas, if you don’t sit on the tank, you get very strange handling or the ability to immediately go into a wheelie. I forgot to switch, at any bump I went “higher than necessary” - it would stall, and if “lower”, it would jerk and squeal. Those. either right or not at all. I didn’t think Sherpa was SO forgiving! This Zhikalka naturally infuriated me on the first trip, on the second I stopped in a circle and cried, and on the third training session I exhaled and said “well, I can finally start studying!”

By the way, having stalled on a steep hill almost at the top, I instantly lifted it, holding the bike with one hand, switched neutral with the other, rolled the bike down and was dragged along by the feeling that I could handle it completely myself without cosmic energy consumption! Sherpa doesn't give me that luxury.

I tried to take it to enduro, but I didn’t really like it. Long straights (several km of the grader) are given to her specifically. Well, or for me, where I’m riding 70 on a Sherpa and “picking my nose”, this one goes into wild resonance, squeals, wobbles on small wheels, and from time to time I’m really scared even at 40 with these two-stroke pickups :) On special unevenness and I haven’t driven it in the dirt yet - I don’t feel confident on it yet. Once I've driven it, I can try it. Although a small tank of 5 liters is quite limiting. But on the other hand, 85 cubic meters, maybe it will work like a chainsaw on a glass of gasoline all day long)

Now I mostly drive around the training ground, practicing my stance, turns, acceleration and braking. Sometimes they let you out onto the main road. And, another important point - Vzhikalka made me improve my physical shape quite a bit. Now, in addition to cross-country training, I also do various physical exercises 3-5 times a week - running, swimming, boxing, etc.

In general, I really wanted to ride the 2T. Well, now I ride, well, and all the time - I haven’t ridden the Sherpa like I did the Vzhikalka. So beware of your wishes, they will come true! :)
