Motorcycle Java 350 638: review, technical specifications

In Soviet times, motorcycles of the Java 638 brand were truly the people's means of transportation. It was a mass-produced motorcycle that could be found almost everywhere: from a small village to a large metropolis.

The Java 350 in its various modifications is an economical and unpretentious motorcycle that does not require large expenses from its owner. A large number of varieties and modifications of the Java motorcycle were produced.

A model with a sidecar was provided as a family motorcycle or a motorcycle for long trips. In this way, it was possible to travel with the family or transport small loads. For example, on personal plots.

History of appearance and description of the motorcycle

The motorcycle's history dates back to 1929, when Frantisek Janicek acquired a license for the production of two-wheeled vehicles from the Wanderer company. The first motorcycles were not very popular due to their high cost, complexity of design and operation.

During the occupation of Czechoslovakia, the factory stopped producing equipment altogether and was completely transferred to the needs of the German military department. The jawa 638, familiar in the Soviet Union, began production in 1984 and had a modification of the jawa 638 5 00. This model replaced the previous machine with the index 350-633. Here the driving and performance characteristics of the motorcycle have been thoroughly improved.

The appearance of the motorcycle, although not very outstanding, is nevertheless eye-catching. Among its other brethren, it is distinguished by elements characteristic only of Java: a large headlight and turn signals protruding from it, a harmoniously located instrument panel above the headlight, a large, neatly shaped tank and a double, straight seat.

There are compartments under the seat and on both sides of the tank for storing tools or belongings. The maximum speed that the Java 350 638 motorcycle can reach according to its passport is 130 km/h, but many enthusiasts tuning the Java 638 achieved much higher figures.

The Java 638 engine is air-cooled, and this fact also left its mark on the appearance of the motorcycle. The engine is completely open, with clearly visible structural elements. The engine also operates at higher speeds than all Soviet motorcycles produced at that time.

The Java 638 gearbox leg served as a kick starter. To do this, it was necessary to press it a little into the gearbox housing and lift it up. In the Soviet Union there was only one drawback for the owners of this motorcycle - the almost complete lack of spare parts and zip kits for repairs.

The motorcycle has proven itself remarkably well in motorsports. This bike was used in both speedway and stage racing. Motorcycles with sidecars were also used for racing.

Motorcycle Java 638 Lux

There are also two main modifications of the motorcycle - Lux and Super. They have an additional designation in the name - 000. Accordingly, the Lux modification received a special shock absorber, thanks to which it was possible to ride a motorcycle with a trailer. To make driving this version as comfortable as possible, the manufacturer installed rubber inserts for the knees and a new, more comfortable seat.

The exterior has also been improved, resulting in a different control panel and muffler. The cylinders on the Java Lux are now placed vertically, which saves space on the motorcycle.

Technical and operational characteristics of jawa 350 638

Jawa 350 638 has the following technical characteristics:

  1. Overall dimensions - 2110x750x1070 mm.
  2. Seat height - 810 mm.
  3. Ground clearance is 130 mm.
  4. Wheelbase - 1335 mm.
  5. Weight without fuel - 156 kg.

  7. Engine capacity - 350 cubic meters. mm.
  8. Power - 26 hp
  9. Tank volume - 17 l.
  10. Maximum speed is 130 km/h.

The fuel consumption of the Java 350 638 motorcycle is about 6-7 liters per hundred, which is a pretty good indicator for this class of motorcycle of that time, because only Japanese motorcycles, which are much more expensive, gave similar results.

Smooth running was achieved by a 4-speed gearbox consisting of three main shafts. The steering function was a conventional Java 638 telescopic fork. The electrical circuit of the motorcycle is based on a 12V circuit. Generator Java 638 with a power of 210 W, at 14V and 15A at 5000 rpm.

The Java 638 carburetor is a float carburetor with a central chamber equipped with a device for easy engine starting. When operating a motorcycle, it is necessary to pay due attention to the Java 638 crankshaft, because due to insufficient lubrication, this is a rather vulnerable part of the motorcycle.

Estimated cost

This motorcycle has not been produced for a long time , but the number of people who want to have it practically does not decrease.
The secondary market comes to the aid of fans of this bike, where there are quite enough offers for the Java-350-638.

And prices for it vary from 25 to 250 thousand rubles.

The design of the Jawa 650 motorcycle is designed in such a way that a person can easily maintain it.

The motorcycle of this model represents a new generation of two-wheeled vehicles made in China.

One wise man said - “Deflowering a Japanese bearing is priceless, for everything else there is a mastercard.” Last season I didn’t skate much at all, about 3-4 thousand... but during this period it became clear that I didn’t have enough front drum brakes, absolutely not enough. There were times when I barely had time to release the brakes, once I was even knocked to the side by a small crossover... it was decided in the winter to work on the fork and convert it to a disc. I read a lot about the dreams of driver drivers about good front brakes, but I never saw a worthy implementation. My motto is to make it so that it is not visible what was done in the garage, but to make it as if such a design was originally there, or was purchased as an option. In short, I wanted it to turn out reliably, not collectively, concisely and thoughtfully, whether I succeeded or not is up to you to judge.

In general, at the beginning of winter, I had stupid thoughts of ruining my original fork, by welding, boiling, overcooking, tapping, cutting... in general, nothing good would come of this. Then I accidentally came across a fork from some Japanese guy, a 250cc, two-stroke sport from the 1980s. I made myself a gift for the New Year and bought it along with the caliper and master cylinder, this happiness cost me 6000 rubles. Then the torment of choice began, woe from my mind... I thought for a long time which traverses I should use, because the original traverse had 34mm crowbars, and the purchased one had 37mm... in general, I settled on the following, the lower traverse from JAWA 634, the upper from 360 (the old lady's). The 643 traverse fit perfectly; it’s strong enough, there’s room for boring, and there’s no need to make alterations to the axle, just a little trimming and threading. Said done, the traverses were bored out, both upper and lower, then the big and thick question arose, how to secure the crowbars in the upper traverse, without hesitation, I cut the traverse from the Japanese and we welded these rings onto the traverse from the old woman, metal cast iron, cooked with an argon , stainless steel additive.

We also had to think about how to contort it in order to lower the caliper so that the friction area of the pads would be sufficient for braking. The fact is that I bought a Chinese hub and disk for this a long time ago. But the disk was smaller in diameter than the disk that was originally used on the Japanese. In general, it was decided to castrate the fork and get rid of the damper, which had not worked for a long time; a T-plate was machined according to the calculated dimensions, which made it possible to secure the caliper as we needed.

The next problem is the knitting needles, there is nothing to tell, they measured, counted and ordered 40 knitting needles for production, the knitting needles were made in Hungary through a Ukrainian friend, the cost of this with delivery is 3500, expensive, but I need reliability and confidence, not knitting needles made of shit. There are spokes, the traverses are ready, the caliper fits as it should, all that remains is to decide on the wing and it can be painted. I decided not to bother and use an ordinary old lady's wing. I had to amputate the central mounts, trim some of the side mounts, and rotate one 45 degrees. Nothing complicated, just a couple of days of fussing and you can paint it.

In general, when everything came together for the last time, no jambs surfaced, I began painting work. As a result, a week later, when everything was completely dry, I once again put everything together and installed it on the motorcycle. Having bought hoses and fittings, I assembled the hydraulic line, bled the brakes, and we were ready to drive out.

Tests have shown that it brakes excellently, nothing leaks, whistles or rubs where it shouldn’t. In general, I happily opened the season on March 14, the speedometer shows 61,686, 2 degrees overboard, and Maxim is happy, cutting through the roads of Rostov. Then we had a gusty wind, I was blown away, moved from lane to lane, and I parked the motorcycle until all this crap stopped, because it became scary to ride when the tires don’t hold up and the wind is about to throw you into oncoming traffic. Yesterday evening, when I returned from work, I got bored, pulled out the motorcycle, decided to go for a ride... but after driving 100 meters from the house, I fell... in what happened, the motorcycle suffered more than I did, scratched the fender, bent the kickstand, shook the gas handle, and I just rolled on the asphalt for a couple of meters ... in general, SEALs, fucking SEALs... I was walking at a speed of 15-20 km/h when suddenly two cats jumped out of the bushes, screaming wildly, under the wheels, who, apparently, decided to sort things out among themselves without dividing the female. Well what! The motorcycle is sideways on the asphalt, and I’m on my knees... why did this happen?! Well, because I was driving along my street, which no one cleans, there is sand on the asphalt, and I’m not yet used to the brakes, so I basically blocked the front wheel, and then everything is clear... the most offensive thing... although this was to be expected - there were three people walking who saw this situation, and not one of them approached, although I plopped down quite epically, and for another half a minute I lay on the asphalt cursing the cats and realizing that life was not fair... The cats ran away, they will probably become bros later and will tell the pussies how they knocked down a motorcyclist.

In general, good luck to everyone, spring and predictability on the roads! And I fixed everything and continue skating!
