A difficult topic has emerged, namely, DVRs for motorcycles, ATVs, motorcycles and scooters. This is a specific, even narrower niche than car video recorders. Sometimes motorcyclists simply don’t know what to choose from and what manufacturers actually offer. We worked on the material, adding those models that cannot be bought in Russia, since Russian brands ignore motorcycle recorders. And this is what happened.
So, to begin with, motor vehicle recorders are divided into two types:
- helmet-mounted, self-contained
- installed on equipment, stationary
The first type is perhaps the most popular among motorcyclists around the world . An inexpensive action camera is mounted on the helmet and off you go. The biggest disadvantage of this option is the battery life, usually 1-2 hours and that’s it.
The most popular solution is the Gopro action camera and similar inexpensive Chinese devices of the same form factor. Only specialized series can distinguish themselves, which manufacturers project as created specifically for motorcycles, and not as action cameras. These are exactly what we will talk about – gadgets for motorcyclists.
The first type is autonomous
MIO (Taiwan)
Thus, the Taiwanese MIO sells a whole bunch of motorcycle video recorders in the shape of a cylinder with attachment to the helmet on the side (and not on the top, like Gopro). Alas, not a single model is sold in Russia, but in Taiwan they are in particular demand among scooterists. There are as many as 8 models presented on the official website!
At the same time, the top model MiVue M733 has very good technical characteristics: [email protected] , f/1.6 aperture, Sony matrix, built-in WiFi module, support for memory cards up to 128GB and a 1200mAh battery, compliance with the IPX7 standard, small dimensions 30x30x91 and good weight in 85g.
ION (USA)
These are oblong action cameras that are positioned for any consumer group, but are very convenient for motorcyclists. Unfortunately, they are not very popular; they were previously sold in Russia, but judging by the dead site, now you can’t buy them in Moscow. However, you can find some options on ebay for $240.
One of the flagships, Ion Air PRO 3 WiFi has a Sony IMX117 matrix, recording in [email protected] , built-in WiFi. In terms of dimensions, it is no longer small - 40x40x105 with a weight of 142g, but the body is made of anodized aluminum. The second type is stationary
This type seems to be less popular, but it turned out that it is more numerous. And there is plenty to choose from. Stationary motor vehicle recorders are increasingly gaining popularity in the West and Asia. First of all, due to the convenience, there is no need to hang anything on the helmet, and due to the stationary power supply from the motorcycle battery. In addition, you can install not 1, but as many as 2 cameras, because people very often drive into a motorcycle from behind.
Autostars (Taiwan)
X550 and X680 are expensive solutions from the Taiwanese manufacturer. The company's portfolio includes quite a few specialized products, including 7 for motorcycles. But the price! For example, a dealer in Australia under the MotoSuperCam brand sells them at some astronomical cost, from $660 to $880 (I think if you contact the manufacturer directly, everything will be much cheaper). The characteristics are nothing special, [email protected] for each camera, IPX6, f/1.8 aperture, 6 lenses, matrix and platform are unknown. There is WiFi, G-sensor and support for memory cards up to 64GB. What are they asking for that kind of money? But anodized metal remote chambers.
LonginTech (Taiwan)
Another highly specialized manufacturer that offers several interesting solutions for motorcycles. Thus, the S100 F3 , although it cannot boast of anything special, can be used as a stationary camera on the handlebars, or mounted on the side of the helmet, and has a built-in 800mAh battery. Dimensions are modest, weight 70g, resolution [email protected] HDR, IP66 protection. S100 F2 version generally writes like this [email protected] But the prices are encouraging - if in rubles (transfer from Taiwanese dollar) 7300 rubles for the first and about 8200 rubles for the F2. Cheap! But there may be problems with the purchase.
DOD (Taiwan)
DOD Hummer - 1 camera car recorder with a 1.5′ screen, released in 2021, although it did not gain popularity and was sold only in the USA, Taiwan and Europe, it looks interesting. It has a built-in 750mAh battery, but at the same time a power connector and a stationary mount on the steering wheel. A matrix of as much as 14Mpx, built-in GPS/WiFi and supposedly electronic stabilization. Judging by the videos, it doesn't help much. The gadget costs about $345 on Amazon.
The DOD QJ10 jakiro is a brand new model that was recently launched at CES 2021 that we mentioned. It was shown there
prototype and, most likely, assessed the demand for the new product. Whether and when it will go into production is unknown, but the characteristics are impressive.
This is a 2-channel motor recorder with QHD resolution for EACH camera, with a waterproof main unit and a 3-inch screen, remote cameras, built-in WiFi/GPS modules and even a remote microphone.
Nextbase RIDE BikeCam is very similar to the branded solution from DOD Hummer, and at the same price.
From DOD there is another, very interesting model without a screen, with a battery and the possibility of both stationary and installation on a helmet like MIO, Sony matrix and WiFi. It doesn’t have a name yet, but we will definitely tell you more, follow the news on the portal.
MIO (Taiwan)
And again Mio appeared in motor vehicle recorders, this time in stationary ones. The newest model Mio MiVue M760D has 2 remote cameras, each with FullHD resolution on an IMX291 matrix, a waterproof unit, supercapacitors, a remote control panel, GPS and a built-in WiFi module. The new product was shown at Cebit 2021 and Computex 2021, the price and release dates are still unknown.
FOXeye (Taiwan)
FOXeye GC1 is a Taiwanese development, previously sold in Russia. At one time, we held it in our hands and even saw it tested on a car in front of the radiator grille. The cost is quite high - in stores the model is now offered for 18-19,000 rubles, but it is unknown whether it is actually available. The manufacturer’s website is also in decline; the last firmware update dates back to 2016.

Or they don’t harness it at all. So the risk of waiting is not justified, and the price will not be low, that’s for sure.

Innovv (China)
Innovv is one of the specialized companies that does not give up and brings more and more new models to the market. Now the brand has 2 current gadgets - the new 2-channel K2 for $338 and the portable C5 with 1 camera for $228.
Innovv K2 is a completely new car recorder with good prospects from a professional team. Of course, the models are made in a Chinese factory, but with quality control. There is delivery to Russia, and it is free. The K2 model is still only in pre-order, but they promise to start shipping in July.
According to those characteristics: [email protected] for each channel, Novatek NT96663 platform, IP67 for cameras and IP65 for the main unit, WiFi/GPS, IMX323 matrices in each camera, aluminum cameras and small sizes of both cameras and the unit.
BulletHD (USA)
This company also specializes in action cameras for motorcyclists, so most of the models are aimed specifically at them. The brand has been represented in Russia since 2021, but, apparently, in 2 years it has not succeeded in promotion, so it is not sold everywhere. But it’s good that it’s on sale at all.
The top model for motorcyclists, Biker PRo plus costs 12,700 rubles and has quite typical characteristics: [email protected] , f/1.8 aperture, support for memory cards up to 64GB, 160 degree angle. The battery is weak, only 850mAh, but has the ability to connect to the on-board network and, surprisingly, the lack of dimensions of the device on the official websites (both Russian and American) does not allow us to praise it.
V-Sys (China)
V-SYS offers a whole variety of DVRs for motorcycles from $65 to $240 with 2 cameras. Moreover, some of the solutions from the Chinese manufacturer look quite interesting in terms of characteristics and form factor; it would be nice to see live videos. By the way, here you can read a review of the Vsys M6L.
The manufacturer's flagship MF2 for >$200 has 2 cameras with an IMX323 matrix in each, a waterproof IP68 housing for the unit, additional GPS and a built-in WiFi module, as well as a 3-inch screen. The cameras seem to be made of aluminum. In general, it looks decent and inexpensive. The same cannot be said about the video examples that are on YouTube. Somehow the work with the firmware was not impressive.
Outside the main list
Among Chinese inexpensive solutions there is the Blueskysea DV188 for $130. And in the low-segment, we liked a simple OEM device (sold under different brands) for 2 cameras in the rearview mirror . One camera is mounted in the mirror and films the road in front, the second is remote, mounted behind, and the image is displayed on the mirror itself. I don’t know how the implementation is, but the idea is interesting, because there are few elements and space on a motorcycle, so mirrors for the screen are a great idea. For just $53, you can take a chance and try to buy a set. You shouldn't expect a high-quality picture, of course.
Outdated models and brands
Comffanion (South Korea), these Chinese-Korean Lookam motor recorders, which were imported to Russia by subini and iconbit in 2013-2014, but even the manufacturing company has not survived to this day. Although there was potential there.
AVIS AVS1080BOX – in 2015, 3 configurations were presented with one, 2 and 1+gps cameras. Remote compact metal cameras, camera moisture protection IPx6.. Recording in Full HD 1080P format (1920×1080, 30 fps per channel). Viewing angle of each camera: 120°. The AVS1080BOX device based on the Ambarella A7LA70 processor supports SD cards up to 32 GB and has a USB 2.0 connection interface. Built-in shock sensor (G-sensor). External microphone and external GPS module for some configurations.
Fuho (Varcon, Taiwan)
A large number of specialized options, including those with remote cameras. Fuho was once introduced in Russia, now you can look for some remnants, but the chances are slim. As for the technical characteristics, they do not have the latest matrices, so you should not count on a very high-quality picture.
Carpa (South Korea)
Nobody officially imported DVRs from the Korean DS telecom to Russia, but nevertheless, in 2015-2016 they were sold in some stores. The Carpa-2000 (Alpha) model had excellent performance quality, but only filmed in HD quality on each camera (2-channel solution).
Summary
Oddly enough, there are many more less popular stationary solutions than we imagined. We also noticed that the price for motor vehicle recorders is much higher than for a car. This is explained by weak demand in a narrow niche, which is logical. You can buy something decent for no less than $150-$250.
Many manufacturers and importers close after 1-3 years without seeing demand, so you may end up with no support for your purchase. It is worth choosing an old brand if you decide to spend money.
There is no point in making a fuss about car recorders; the waterproofness of external cameras and wiring are what you should pay attention to.
The main problem with car recorders is electronic stabilization. Alas, the kind shown by the latest gopro or action cameras from Sony are not seen here. Maybe there will be more to come or Thinkware will release an M1?
If you want to take a closer look at the purchase, then up to $200 you should buy Chinese V-Sys, and if your budget is higher, choose Innovv. When real samples from DOD and Thinkware come out, take them. Alas, although Mio looks very tasty, the complexity of payment and delivery can cause significant difficulties.
