Anyone who has purchased their first moped rarely thinks about the rules of its operation, maintenance and possible repairs. As a result, parts wear out faster, the moped constantly breaks down and works intermittently.
While the moped is relatively new, problems with the power unit and chassis system are almost invisible. But every day of driving a vehicle, with such an attitude towards it, adds to the likelihood that the moped will break down.
Unfortunately, it happens that young people, either due to lack of experience or because of their frivolity, do nothing if the vehicle is “jamming” and ride it until the moped stops starting.
Do you want to know why a Minsk motorcycle won’t start? All possible breakdowns.
Is there anything that can be done if the moped does not start from the starter? There are many reasons that lead to this. If the reason is serious, then it’s better to turn to experienced mechanics. Well, minor breakdowns are easy to fix yourself. Fortunately, mopeds produced in the USSR are distinguished by their simplicity of design, which also helps with tuning. For example, you can tune a moped yourself without any problems with a minimum of tools in the garage. Of course, you could use the help of an experienced mechanic, but for a novice motorbike enthusiast it is enough to be attentive and ingenious.
Carburetor clogged
The symptoms of the problem are the same as in the previous case - you can start the moped, but then it stalls. That is, there is a spark, there is gasoline, but the moped does not start. In order to check whether the carburetor has broken down, you need to check how gasoline flows from it into the cylinder.
Take the spark plugs and wet their contacts with gasoline. Then screw the spark plug being tested into the cylinder and try to start the moped. If the bike starts this way, it means the carburetor will have to be repaired.
If you are on the road and need to quickly get to your destination, you can clean the supply hoses by blowing them with a pump. If this does not work, then you need to completely clean the carburetor.
Preparation for purchase
It is advisable to drive as many hours as possible before purchasing your iron horse - and not only on smooth asphalt. It is worth organizing rides along forest roads in order to learn how to stay in the saddle in extreme conditions. You will need to pass a category M license. Obtaining this category is allowed from the age of 16 on the territory of the Russian Federation. And you can go on your first trip on your own motorized vehicle.
Moped license - category M
The undeniable advantage when choosing a moped is its efficiency - consumption is about two liters per hundred kilometers, with a gasoline tank capacity of 4 liters this is quite acceptable. A definite plus when deciding to own an Alpha. And even if you have to ride throughout the warm season, the efficiency of a moped will allow you to partially save your budget. "Alpha" has five horsepower at a maximum speed of 7500 per minute.
The spark plug is not working properly
The moped will not start if the spark plugs are faulty. To diagnose this, you need to check the spark plug and the area under it. The place under the candle should be completely dry. A wet spark plug means there is too much gasoline in the fuel mixture. If something is wrong, the area under the candle needs to be wiped dry.
Very often, starting the engine is prevented by carbon deposits on the spark plug, which prevents it from producing a spark. Using a spark plug, you need to unscrew the spark plug and check it. It's very simple. To check if the spark plug will work, you need to put a cap on it and touch its bottom to the frame of the bike.
Then you need to try to start the bike using the kickstarter. If there is no spark, it means that the contacts in the spark plug cap are not functioning. Then the contacts are “pressed”. And if a spark does not appear even after this, the spark plug needs to be changed.
Brand advantages
If the electric starter malfunctions, which almost never happens, you can always start the moped manually using a kick starter. A four-stroke engine is installed, the cooling system is air; to put it simply, cooling occurs by blowing air over the engine. This type of transport can easily carry two adults, with a maximum load capacity of one hundred and fifty kilograms. For driver safety, the factory installs steel bars on the front of the moped.
Safety bars on the Alpha moped are installed for driver safety
A clear electronic instrument panel, on which there are indicators for low and high beams, an icon for the turn signals, and displays data about the selected speed. Learning to ride a moped with such a panel is quite convenient, because you can always see what works or, conversely, does not work in the equipment. An undoubted advantage is the presence of rear-view mirrors. The running-in of a new moped should be at least three thousand kilometers . For good grinding of parts and calibration of the working gap. Proper running-in is the key to a long and reliable engine service. And riding in a serviceable vehicle is a pleasure.
Design Features
The wheels are 17-inch in size, but unlike the front, the rear has a slightly larger volume. The brakes have a drum design and are activated by levers located on the handlebars of the moped. Hydraulic front shock absorbers and pseudo hydraulic rear shock absorbers are installed - spring type.
Moped design
One cannot ignore the appearance of the Alpha, which has excellent external characteristics. The color range is presented in three primary colors, perfectly combined with the shine of chrome. Footrests are not only practical and comfortable, but also beautiful. Unusual shaped chrome muffler. In the rear of the seat there is space for installing a trunk, which can serve not only as a storage space, but also as a comfortable backrest for the passenger.
The trunk is not only a place for storage, but also a comfortable backrest for the passenger
Moped won't start - what to do
The moped stopped starting - what to do!? The answer is simple - we need to look for the reason. There is a small nuance and that’s it. I personally had this happen a couple of times with a scooter. It stalled and that was it, and due to my inexperience I didn’t know what to do. For the phone and call a familiar “uncle”, and the reason turned out to be simple. By the way, with Japanese mopeds there are a lot of very simple nuances, due to which it stops working, especially if it’s used.
What to do if the engine does not start?
The vital activity of the engine is supported by several systems, the main ones being:
1. Power system (gasoline). 2. Ignition system (spark). 3. Exhaust system.
If one of the systems is screwed up a little, then the engine can no longer work as expected. This means we need to check these systems one by one. So, the main types of faults that make the engine “dead”:
1. Too much/too little fuel mixture (power system) enters the combustion chamber. 2. There is no spark, too weak, or does not occur at the right time (ignition system). 3. It is difficult to remove, excuse me, gases (exhaust system).
The sequence of our actions when checking these systems without additional equipment will be as follows. Let's start with the ignition system. We unscrew the spark plug, place it on the cylinder and crank the engine crankshaft. Now we just need to determine if there is a spark. If there is no spark, the reasons may be the following:
1. The spark plug is faulty. 2. The spark plug cap is faulty. 3. The high voltage wire is damaged. 4. Break or inter-turn short circuit of the ignition coil. 5. Circuit breakage due to oxidation of wiring terminals or mechanical damage. 6. Faulty electronic ignition part.
We begin the test by replacing the spark plug with a known good one. Next we move on to the 5th point, it is quite possible that some connector has simply come loose. To check the serviceability of the spark plug cap, we simply exclude it from the system. We connect the spark plug directly to the core of the high-voltage wire. It is possible that you have already discovered a malfunction, and if not, then check the ignition coil. Almost any coil (from contact and electronic ignition) produces the voltage necessary for a spark if you sharply strike the positive wire from the on-board battery across the primary winding terminal on the ignition coil. If there is a spark, then all that remains is to check the electronic part of the ignition. Unfortunately, in garage and field conditions this can only be done by replacing the switch with one that is known to work. If there is still no spark, you will have to check the integrity of the coils on the generator.
This is interesting: Why is it dangerous to get ahead of a truck on the right side?
If there is a spark, we proceed to checking the power system. If our spark plug is dry, it means there is not enough gasoline. If it is wet, there is an excess of gasoline in the fuel mixture.
Fuel system malfunctions:
1. Dirty or old gasoline, water has entered the gasoline. 2. The gas tap is faulty, the hole in the gas tank cap is clogged, and the fuel filter is clogged. 3. The carburetor is clogged or not adjusted. 4. Wet or torn air filter. 5. Damaged gaskets or carburetor pipe.
By the way, check the gas tank, otherwise the sensors on mopeds, if there are any, sometimes lie.
In the first case, we check whether the carburetor is clogged and whether gasoline is supplied to it from the gas tank. To make sure that the cause is a lack of fuel, pour a few drops of gasoline directly into the spark plug hole, screw the spark plug into place and try to start the engine. If everything is normal, then the engine should make several revolutions on its own. In this case, we check whether the gas filter is clogged, whether the gas tap or vacuum tap is working.
These actions must be performed with the air filter removed and the gas tank cap removed. There is an air hole in it, which can also become clogged. If the faucet is an ordinary mechanical one, then simply open it, remove the hose from the carburetor, and see if gasoline flows. If the valve is vacuum, we do everything the same, only we turn the engine with the starter. At the same time, a vacuum is created in the carburetor inlet pipe and the vacuum valve opens.
It also happens, on Japanese scooters, you just need to close the air filter with your hand and start the moped (this happened to me a couple of times). It's like it's breaking through.
If fuel flows into the carburetor quickly, then remove the carburetor, wash it, and set the standard settings for the quality of the fuel mixture. We do the same if the candle was wet because... in this case, either the quality of the mixture is not adjusted, or the shut-off valve in the float chamber does not work. This malfunction can occur due to contaminated fuel, so you will still have to flush the entire carburetor.
When the engine is flooded, you need to ventilate it by running it a little with the starter with the spark plug removed.
If the engine runs but does not develop full power, more serious diagnostics will be needed. Check to see if the carburetor is adjusted correctly. If the engine is four-stroke, we check the valve clearances; if it is a two-stroke, we check the reed valve. In any case, you will have to check the ignition timing with a strobe light. But sometimes, especially on used Japanese scooters with high mileage, the muffler is simply clogged. It’s impossible not to mention this because... The percentage of this malfunction is quite high.
Ignition coil
If everything looks intact, check the ignition coil. To do this, disconnect it (remembering how the wires are connected) and use a multimeter to check the resistance of the windings.
The primary winding is made of thicker copper wire. Its terminals are connected to two terminal connectors at the end of the coil. It has a small number of turns and therefore its resistance is low, approximately 0.5-5 Ohms. One wire of the coil is connected to ground - you need to check it, attach one multimeter probe to the nearest metal part of the moped, and the second to the coil connector. The resistance should be close to zero.
The high-voltage coil consists of several thousand turns of very thin copper wire, so its resistance should be on the order of 2-5 kOhms. The resistance must be measured between the coil contact connected to ground and the core of the high-voltage wire.
In this way, we will check the coil for a break, but without special equipment we cannot check for other coil faults, for example, an interturn short circuit, so we will leave the coil alone for now, also because a coil without visible mechanical damage is most likely working.
Alfa moped won't start
Chinese-made mopeds have different characteristics, but the reasons why they do not start are almost the same. The fact is that Alpha, Delta, Mustang and the like mopeds have similar engine designs and general starting systems, so breakdowns on the Alpha moped can also occur in cases with other models. This article describes what to do if the alpha moped does not start.
In general, scooterists traditionally recommend looking at the serviceability of two main components - the fuel supply and the presence of a spark on the spark plug. Below we will briefly consider each of the reasons.
Checking the spark plug
In the Alpha moped, a completely standard spark plug is installed; a spark is also supplied to it in the traditional way by generating current from a generator. First of all, we check the spark plug for the absence of mechanical damage; it must not only be intact, but there must be no carbon deposits. It is the presence of carbon deposits that in most cases prevents the Alpha moped from starting; the situation can be corrected after cleaning the contacts. This is done with sandpaper, after which the candle becomes beautiful and, most importantly, working.
Next, check for the presence of a spark plug, without removing the spark plug from the spark plug holder, just attach it to a metal surface and try to start the moped from the foot. A spark should form, if not, the reason is in the parts that are responsible for the formation of the spark. In Chinese Alpha mopeds, the ignition coil is considered to be of rather poor quality; even on new mopeds it tends to break.
Presence of compression
A moped like Alpha should produce excellent compression, which can easily be checked as follows: remove the spark plug from the cylinder head and place your finger in the hole, then pull the leg and with good compression, strong pressure should appear until the finger is pushed out. If there is a lack of compression, you will have to remove the engine and the cylinder-piston group itself.
The piston must not hang out in the cylinder and give out compression, and the rings must also be in good condition and fit in size. Otherwise, you will have to change the rings, piston and cylinder. In frequent cases, air in the cylinder is leaked by gaskets that do not create the proper vacuum.
Alpha moped carburetor
A malfunction of the fuel system is a fairly common problem as to why an alpha moped won’t start; you will have to look for the reasons in the carburetor. It is he who is responsible for the correct supply of fuel and its distribution throughout the engine. Often, the carburetors of an Alpha moped tend to become clogged with various debris, and it’s even worse when moisture and water get into the carburetor. Gasoline mixes with water and the CPG is not able to process such a mixture. Remove the carburetor and blow it out well, clean it, adjust the jets and be sure to adjust the position of the needle. This procedure is easy to perform independently.
"Delta" (V-50M) does not pull. / Help / MotoScoot - motorcycles and scooters
Such a thing, I took a Soviet Delta (used). I didn't go from the very beginning. The former owner said that he had just changed the rings and were getting used to them. I drove it around a bit, but it didn't get any better. When replacing the crankcase (the old one was cracked), I replaced the piston and rings with new ones (there was a small groove on the piston, apparently from a grain of sand; one ring was broken), it still doesn’t work. The clutch doesn’t slip, it just stalls on a flat road in first gear from lack of traction, it only goes uphill and then you have to push it with your feet.)) The carb (K60) has been adjusted. The only thing I don’t like is the jet, the hole in it is too large and somehow crooked.)) Does anyone have any ideas on how to make it go at least 40-50 km/h? PS I did not set the ignition (perhaps too early). Can anyone tell me how to do this correctly? It starts with just a click, the engine runs smoothly without load, and picks up speed well. When starting, when I slowly lower the kick starter, I hear some hissing, as if air is being sucked in. Is this how it should be or is there still a leak in the cylinder?

Alfa moped won't start
If your Alpha moped is well preserved, most likely you know how to start it from the starter. But if you are faced with the impossibility of doing this, and there is no desire to start the Alpha moped from the foot, repairing the electric starter is quite simple. Usually the problem begins precisely because of a dead battery; it is enough to charge it and recheck its functionality.

ELECTRONICS OF ALPHA AND DELTA MOPEDS
Due to the fact that more and more owners of devices with engines of the 139FMB type and lights at recess are faced with six-coil generators (replacing the motor or preferably a more powerful generator), there is a need to write this article. First, let's figure out what the differences are. The picture shows a diagram
The electrical equipment of the mopeds under consideration consists of a source and consumers of electronic energy, auxiliary devices and an electronic network. Electrical equipment ensures timely ignition of the working mixture in the engine cylinder, operation of lighting devices and
What could cause
The reasons why mopeds no longer start may be the following:
- fuel system
- ignition system
- compression
- engine oil.
Each of these categories includes many details, which we will learn about below.
Fuel system
Nothing to burn, or lack of fuel in the combustion chamber, is the main reason why the moped will not start. Below are a number of common breakdowns and ways to fix them.
- Low quality fuel. Diluted gasoline or old fuel will not allow the engine to start. A particularly pressing problem is when the delta or alpha does not start after winter. The fuel in the tank has lost its combustible properties and may not even ignite.
- Faulty fuel valve. If fuel from the tank does not flow into the carburetor, the fault lies in the fuel tap. If you have a scooter, then immediately change the tap, first checking the presence of the supplied vacuum. You can try to clean the faucet on a moped.
- A dirty fuel filter can prevent gasoline from entering the carburetor. The filter must be clean.
- Carburetor. If the moped starts and stalls, there is an 80% chance that the cause is in the carburetor. To clean it, you can use a carburetor cleaner, but the safest thing to do is disassemble it and wash it yourself. The shut-off needle must be free of defects and the fuel jets must not be clogged!
- A clogged air filter is another reason why the moped has difficulty starting. After all, for an engine to operate, it requires not only gasoline, but also air. Remove the air filter and try to see if the moped starts. If it starts, then the problem was in the air filter - clean it.
This is interesting: How, knowing the types of people, can you protect yourself on the road?
Advice! Only the serviceability of all components of the fuel system will ensure normal engine operation.
Ignition system
There is nothing to set on fire, or the lack of an ignition spark is the second most important reason when the moped has trouble starting. Pay special attention to the following details:
- Candle. First of all, make sure there is a spark. Unscrew the spark plug, put the tip on, and then rotate the engine with the starter, pressing the electrodes of the spark plug against the metal of the engine. If there is a spark, it means that the entire ignition system is working properly. Otherwise, clean the spark plug, warm it up and try again. In case of failure, we look for a deeper reason.
- High voltage wire. If the wire is exposed, at least in one place, it will pierce the body, and the spark plug will not work. Insulate the wire or replace it with a new one.
- Ignition coil. If the coil does not work, there will be no spark. The ignition coil is checked using a multimeter. It is necessary to measure the resistance on the primary and secondary windings of the coil. The optimal resistance value can be found for each moped individually.
For example, the primary winding of the ignition coil (between the two coil contacts) of a Delta or Alpha moped should have a resistance in the range of 0.1 to 1.0 Ohms. The secondary winding (from the spark plug contact to the end of the wire) with a spark plug cap should resist with a force of 7-9 kOhms, without a cap - 3-4 kOhms.
If there is no resistance in the secondary winding, measure the resistance of the wire to ground. It should be within 2.5 kOhm.
- Battery. The reason that a moped does not start when cold is often a discharged battery. To get a good push-button start, be sure to install a new battery in the scooter.
Compression
Motorcycles, scooters and mopeds start successfully from the stand only if there is sufficient compression. Compression above 7 kg per cm3 is considered sufficient. The optimal value is 10 atm.
You can measure the degree of compression with a compression meter. This device is inserted into the spark plug hole and then the motor rotates. The compressometer scale will show the exact value of the compression ratio.
Advice! To ensure that your Alpha starts like a clock, change the piston group parts on time, ensuring the necessary compression.
Engine oil
This reason can only be considered in the winter season. The engine oil may thicken and prevent the crankshaft from turning. In this case, you should warm up the engine crankcase with a heater so that the oil becomes less viscous and the shaft can rotate.
Why is there no spark?
The second most common problem is why a scooter won’t start - there is nothing to ignite the fuel, or there is a spark - but there is nothing to ignite. To check the spark, you need to remove the spark plug cap and unscrew the spark plug. It must be dry and clean. The gap between the electrodes is needed 0.6-0.7 mm. The first sign of a lack of spark is that the spark plug is wet and smells of gasoline. This means the fuel did not burn in the cylinder and remained on the spark plug. Dry and clean it, then insert it into the cap and lean it against the cylinder mass.
At the same time, press the starter button for a second or the kick starter a couple of times. The spark between the spark plug electrodes should be clearly visible. If there is no spark, then replace the spark plug with a new one, most often this is the problem.
The quality of gasoline in Russia is not very good, this quickly kills spark plugs, especially iridium ones. If a spark does not appear with the new spark plug, we look for a fault in the wiring. A broken wire or oxidation connecting the ground between the frame and the engine is a common problem. Another reason could be a burnt-out resistor in the spark plug cap. It can be checked with a multimeter; the resistance should be about 5 kOhm. If this is not the problem, then check the ignition coil, this can also be done with a multimeter. In this case, the resistance of the primary and secondary windings is checked. The resistance of the primary winding, as a rule, tends to zero. Well, the resistance of the secondary should be several kOhms. There shouldn't be a break.
It is also worth checking the switch by replacing it with a known good one.
The next possible malfunction is a break in the wire coming from the ignition switch or the wire coming from the switch. Check the wires for breaks or abrasions. Check the reliability of the female-male plug connections. If no visible damage is found, a wire break can be detected by testing each wire with a multimeter. If the above manipulations did not produce results and a spark never appeared, the last reason for its absence is failure of the generator, pulse sensor or generator windings, which happens extremely rarely. The generator windings can also be checked with a multimeter.
How to Check the Starter Relay on a Chinese Scooter
as a check the starter relay on the scooter
Published September 1, 2021
Major relay . Problems with the electric starter itself are not considered.
Why is the pipe crap?
I'm at home relay I disassembled, unwinded the entire winding, rewound it, cleaned the contacts, and for the 5th year everything is fine with the hook, my brain doesn't eat at all, there's simply no point in buying a new one, because there's no guarantee of how long it will last again
tell me that I have a Honda LEAD 90, the problem occurs when I start the scooter with the starter, change the bend, loosen the spring on the mandex, look at the starter, it turns out when I start, get the starter, the bendex engages, turn the crankshaft 2 times, after which the Bendex will return to its original position and begin to rotate, but without turning the crankshaft A.
If I have a Skymoto Spider 50 scooter and such garbage the relay clicks and the starter does not turn and does not connect to the direct wire from the battery, then the starter rotates and the relay has already changed. This could be the reason. A.

Where is the battery located on a moped and how to connect it
Once you find yourself in an unpleasant situation with a battery in the middle of the road, you begin to think about how to avoid this again. You can get home without a battery, but if you ride for a long time, the scooter’s electronics will begin to fail. The battery requires care, so knowing where it is located and how to change it is absolutely necessary.
Connecting the battery is easier than doing any of the operations described above. Its location depends on the model. On Chinese scooters it is usually located under your feet. We remove the floor and look for a rectangular hatch. There is a place for the battery right in it. If the model is made in Japan, then you will have to check other places. The battery may be located in front of the driver's seat or under the seat.
If you don't know what kind of battery your two-wheeled friend needs, then measure the space for it before you go shopping. Or, using one of the methods, get to the seller directly on a moped.
You need to connect the battery like any other electrical device: minus to minus, and plus to plus. The terminals should be as close to the wires as possible. A red wire usually means positive, and a green or black wire usually means negative.
Nuances concerning both schemes
If you connect the security system as discussed above, you can get a workable option, perhaps without remote start. In general, an alarm system on a scooter can be installed in different ways. For example, if you don't need engine lock, just don't cut the wire and connect the "gray" and "pink" cords. You don’t have to connect the siren or the scooter’s turn signals (at the owner’s choice). Further, all the schemes that have been considered will only become more complicated.
We will equip the motor with remote start
The “blue” wire coming from the signaling connector can supply voltage to the relay that turns on the starter. Let's figure out what to connect it to.
There may be several wires coming from the “2” button module, if it is present at all. One of them is connected to a standard relay, and when pressed, the following may appear:
- + 12 Volt. Then, connect the cord itself to the “blue” signal wire (T-shaped connection);
- "Mass" potential. If you need autostart, you will have to buy a relay, the normally open contacts of which are connected between ground and the found cord.
When installing an additional relay, turn on the winding between the “blue” wire and ground. In this case, the signaling electronics must be protected with a diode.
“Chapter 1” looked at how to install an alarm on a scooter with a 4-pin and 2-pin ignition. In the second case, for example, remote start is easier to implement:
The numbers here indicate the relay connection points:
- Contact 30;
- Contact 87;
- Pin 85 (diode cathode);
- Pin 86 (diode anode).
As you can see, no new connection points will be added. The only thing is that you have to stretch the cord from ground to pin 86.
The last paragraph does not apply to any equipment produced in China. Simply, Nexus, Racer, Tachilla and many other scooters use a 4-pin ignition.
Subtleties of connecting to the switch
Let us immediately note: this chapter only talks about the first circuit, that is, the 4-pin ignition. As you remember, to connect the signaling you need to break one wire going to the switch:
The cord in question is marked with an arrow. Finding it in most cases is not difficult:
Here there are 6 cords connected to the switch, and their markings are clear.
Sometimes, at the same time, the switch module is a miniature unit, and it can be difficult to even find its location. Which is true for most Racer models and many others.
It’s hard to guess, but the switch module here is the part numbered “5”. And sometimes, in difficult cases, a digital switch is used, to which a connector with dozens of cords is connected. We have seen such an example in the video. Good luck.
