Review of BRP Outlander 400 XT (2006)

At the time of writing this review, there are already 21,000 thousand reviews about cars on the auto market and not a single one about the ATV. Well, I'll be the first! :)

My passion for ATVs began back in 2005, when I bought a small semi-children's Yamaha Breeze ATV (volume 125 m3) of an unknown year of manufacture and practically without documents. (at that time ATVs were not subject to mandatory registration with the State Technical Supervision Authority). The toy lived with me for 5 years. Of course, it was not suitable for any serious rides. So, drive along the sidewalks and go get some beer. But it had a very important advantage: it was light (you could lift it by the back and move it) and therefore maneuverable.

Meanwhile, my neighbor bought himself a BRP Outlander XT650 MAX, and every time he drove past it, he proudly and looked at me with a contemplative gaze.:) I could no longer feel such withering glances on myself and decided to join the crowd of serious ATV riders by purchasing an equally serious single-seat BRP Outlander 400 XT ATV ​​:). Now many people will start throwing themselves at me, like, how serious is 400?! But screw you! But first things first.

The seating position is comfortable. Even with two people you can ride without any discomfort. The ATV is shorter and lighter than its two-seater counterparts, so it is not inferior to them in cross-country ability in most cases. We rode with four of us once. I had two 650 doubles and an 850 with me. I walked through the windfall first. For owners of more powerful qualrs, such cross-country ability of the 400 was a revelation. Over beer in the evening, everyone came to the conclusion that there were no visible differences in cross-country ability between our quads. The only time you start to feel a lack of engine power is when kneading in mud or water up to the seat (this is more than a meter from the ground).

The 400 has a single-cylinder engine, so it is not so afraid of water that can get into the engine in a deep puddle through the exhaust pipe or the variator. Those who have snorkels installed have nothing to fear. However, if water gets into one of the two cylinders of a two-cylinder engine, then we get a seized engine. They say the 400 engine is very reliable and very durable. Didn't check..

To be honest, I didn’t track the consumption. But one tank is enough for about 3 hours of heavy riding.

They say that BRP has the most comfortable suspension for light rides, which is also not unimportant. I accelerated it to 87 km/h on asphalt. Not scary. It's going quite confidently.

I saw an interesting topic on the import BRP forum - “who has the highest mileage?” I was surprised by the mileage of 20, 30, 40 thousand km. However, people never climbed into the engine.

Breakdowns:

The first thing that broke was the inclusion of front-wheel drive. It turns out there is a finger inside by which the electric motor drives some kind of stray back and forth, and it turns the front-wheel drive on and off. So this finger has been erased to zero. They fixed it.

Then the winch died for a long time. And just at that moment when my friend and I sat down in the forest up to our ears in water and clay, alone. The quadr simply stuck to the muffler with its belly. We thought we were about to get sick - fuck it. Quinoa died. The nearest settlement was about 5 kilometers away. It was getting dark, and there was just a cloud of mosquitoes. My friend swore so much that I think nothing alive still grows in that place. But at that moment all living things were crawling and flying towards us: mosquitoes, worms and ants! I started looking for a lighter and in the last pocket, when there was no more hope, I finally found it. A fire made of wet sticks produced more smoke than fire... but at least it somehow repelled the insects. A call to a neighbor and we are saved. He pulled us out of that ass, for which we are very grateful to him.

The third candidate for elimination was the battery charge relay. It didn’t inspire confidence anyway, and somehow in the forest, with the radiator cooling fan actively working and the high beams on, it died completely. The same neighbor was dragging us back for his 650)) through such paths and swamps that it seemed to me 5 times that now we would both be left waist-deep in this puddle. But he dragged! It was a revelation for me. He and I each had a passenger.

On the next ride, I let a friend steer, and I sat in the back. Returning to the camp on 4 ATVs, we really accelerated and for some reason a tree crossed our path. In the morning it turned out that we had torn off the front right wheel mount and the right axle shaft from the frame. The mood was spoiled, and the square acquired the appearance of “you can’t look at it without tears.” Everyone had to return home without even eating barbecue. We rode 120 km from home almost in vain. It turned out that the BRP frame is made almost of foil! Be careful, gentlemen! We bought a piece of frame from some broken ATV, welded the required part and welded it to us. It became stronger than before. Everything cost 12,000 rubles. But….

The brakes were gone... we didn't bleed them for 3 days. We tried all the methods and advice from experienced and unexperienced. In the end, we fucked so much that, out of powerlessness, we were ready to believe the advice of any grandmother passing by. The advice of some Jim Carrey from an import forum helped. You need to open the lid of the brake fluid reservoir located on the steering wheel. Then tie the brake handle in the squeezed state with a zip-tie to the main handle and leave the structure for 6 hours. The air will escape on its own during this time. Then return, press the handle to its normal position, add brake fluid and repeat. That's it, the brakes are bled!

Back into the forest...into the mud. The variator is stuck. Analysis showed that dirt and dust stick to the main shaft over time. The main disk simply stops spinning on the shaft. Was cleaned and assembled. Subsequently, it turned out that during assembly I couldn’t reach the bolt and the whole structure came loose 200 meters from the house. I pushed it along the dirt road for 25 minutes alone. Although physically developed. Then I felt the real weight of the ATV.

On the last autumn ride, we finally returned to where the birch trees run across the road at night and had a great ride there with the same group on 4 quads. And finally, after watching enough movies on YouTube, I decided to drive one wheel onto the vertical side of the MAZ cab, which was lying not far away. Result: the front gearbox seal was squeezed out and the axle shaft fell out of the grenade. Repair at the service = 10,000 rubles.

Despite all the problems, I am happy with the ATV. All breakdowns are most likely a consequence of the careless operation of the previous owner and our own stupidity. :)

I highly recommend installing a towbar! For it we transported a trailer with a jet ski, a boat, provisions and water for the tent camp.

There are luggage racks at the rear, it is possible to place a passenger seat without covering the trunk. The extended base ensures sitting comfort, and the footrests are also designed for this. This vehicle provides emotions and adrenaline from extreme rides.

The configuration is characterized by a huge number of technological nuances that provide increased handling and additional control on the vehicle. The ATV has great power and the best power-to-weight ratio in its class. Its features:

This is a level above the basic configuration, although the performance remains at the highest level. Differences from the basic version include the presence of more aggressive tires, cast alloy wheels, protection of hands from loads and vibration when transferring to the steering wheel, rigid wheel guards, and electric power steering. Also included is a winch capable of pulling a three-ton unit. Such a rich content of the car ensures its off-road racing operation.

It includes all-wheel drive and a proprietary front limited-slip differential system. Since 2013, all ATVs in this series are equipped with the latest platform. They have a new frame, which is more rigid and durable, because it is famous for its unusual set of elements. By reducing the number of parts and welds, the weight is further reduced and the center of gravity is reduced, which leads to improved handling and stability while driving.

The front suspension is equipped with two A-arms. Moreover, the installation planes of each of the levers are not parallel, but the attachment points of the pendulum levers are shifted down. According to the official manufacturer itself, due to such innovations, the contact of the wheels with the coating is improved. Moreover, the car is not afraid of bumps, holes, turns, or skids.

The ATV has a large and powerful motor. The two-cylinder injection engine with a V-shaped structure is equipped with liquid cooling and a CVT with a reduction range. The new models have a slightly modified power system. In them, the air filter housing is located at the highest point of the car - right behind the steering wheel, where the gas tank is located. To open the filter, you need to snap off a small part of the lining and open the lid that covers it. You can do this directly with your hands; no additional tools are required. This is especially valuable if the filter is flooded in a swamp and there is nothing at hand. Then to change you just need to open the lid and put in a new element.

The base of the ATV is oblong, which is determined by the presence of a passenger seat. This brings its advantages:

The ease of cornering is also impressive. Of course, the electric power steering also plays a role here, but the chassis settings are no less important.

The amplifier of a special modification is characterized by nonlinear operation. It depends on the speed. The lower the acceleration, the maximum assistance. Similarly, there is more power when simply parking. This helps you maneuver the machine and move it comfortably through deep mud. As speed increases, the force from the electric motor weakens, which increases steering feedback. The driver is also offered 3 levels of control input to choose from. The simplest one is easy even for beginners. Higher ones are suitable for professionals and experienced drivers.
