Why won't the Izh Jupiter 5 start? Is there any spark coming from gasoline?

Why did they stop producing the IZH Planet motorcycle in Russia? Oddly enough, the Kovrov Machine-Building Plant named after Dektyarev (ZID), as well as the former Soviet, now Belarusian Minsk Motorcycle Plant, still supply their motorcycles to the market. As for the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant, which produces IZH motorcycles (Planet, Planet-Sport, Jupiter), the last production batch of motorcycles was produced in 2008, then, due to difficulties arising from the economic crisis, the production of IZH motorcycles was curtailed. It’s a pity, because the state could have provided assistance to the plant. At that time, Izhmash had a lot of experimental design work on promising motorcycles, both with two-stroke and four-stroke engines. I have a lot of positive memories associated with the IZh “Planet-3” and “Planet-5” motorcycles.

Any motorcycle model starting from Planet-2 gave a head start to Jupiters in terms of cross-country ability, old or new, it doesn’t matter. He didn’t sail on it, even in the taiga or in the forest, fishing or hunting. A very reliable “workhorse” with traction like a tractor, and my father and I never transported anything on it. We bought it in 1989 and to this day my father drives it, but it looks like new and makes my heart happy with its proper operation. Planet motorcycles, even its oldest models, continue to serve their owners regularly and reliably, despite the stoppage of production, there are no problems with spare parts for repairs on the market, and there is no limit to the maintainability stock. In this article, we will look at the IZH-P5 power unit of the IZH Planet 5 motorcycle, or more precisely, its technical characteristics, weaknesses and disadvantages. The IZH-P5 power unit differs from the IZH-P4 20 hp. the previous model of the motorcycle “IZH Planety-4” increased by 2 hp. power, a higher compression ratio and an engine head, the 4th model has two exhaust pipes, the 5th has one. Gearboxes differ in the number of teeth on the gears and, accordingly, in the gear ratios. Gearboxes are interchangeable.

URAL starter does not turn

If the control system of the above equipment does not turn on the starter when turning the ignition key to start, then the cause of the breakdown lies in the electrical equipment or electronic systems of the truck. The reasons may be the following:

  • Faulty relay and fuse box
  • Lack of contacts in electrical wiring connectors
  • Truck main relay malfunction
  • Failure of the ignition switch Failure of the starter
  • CAN bus break or short circuit
  • Lack of “mass”
  • No supply voltage at the engine control unit
  • Open or shorted wiring harness
  • Starter solenoid relay malfunction
  • Failure of the ignition switch
  • Failure of the engine control unit

Required Parts

In order for the ignition system to work correctly, a number of auxiliary parts are required. They are listed below:

  • Switch for BSZ VAZ cars. You should not choose exclusively from the low price segment. The Astro switch has a lot of positive reviews;
  • Hall Sensor. The best option for Jupiter 5 is a similar manufacturer VAZ. By purchasing it in branded packaging, you protect yourself from counterfeits;
  • Ignition coil with two terminals. You should choose between the gazelle engine number 406 or Oka with an electronic ignition system;
  • A pair of silicone armor wires with rubber caps;
  • The modulator is a butterfly-shaped plate made of iron.

Starter turns but won't start

If the starter of the described equipment spins when you turn the key in the ignition, but the engine does not show any signs. The cause of the malfunction may lie in both the electrical equipment of the car and the mechanics. Auto electrician malfunctions can be as described above, except for malfunctions associated with the starter and its circuits, plus the following reasons:

  • Malfunction of the high pressure fuel pump (HPF)
  • Mechanical engine failure
  • “Airing” of fuel equipment
  • Immobilizer malfunction
  • Lack of diesel fuel in the tank
  • Fuel filter clogged
  • Chip in the key is faulty
  • Clogged fuel lines
  • Check valve failure
  • Mechanical faults of injectors

If everything is in order with this, then we look at the spark plugs.

Unscrew the spark plugs. Are they damp and smell like gasoline? This means they are flooded. This can be for two reasons - you filled them or there is a malfunction in the motorcycle.

If you did this, for example, you turned off or started the motorcycle incorrectly, then you can fix it as follows.

Dry the spark plugs, blow them out and heat them. !We do not clean with a wire brush!

Next, put the dry spark plugs in place and try to start the motorcycle. If the motorcycle works, then !hurray! we continue our way.

TIP: purchase and carry a spare set of candles with you; once filled candles can stop working at any time, even if you bought them just yesterday.

If after the above steps the motorcycle does not start, then there is a clear malfunction either in the presence of a spark or in the fuel supply. You will have to take the motorcycle to a specialist motorcycle service center.

The candles are fine, they are dry.

Checking the fuel supply.

Remove the fuel supply hose from the carburetor/injector.

Carefully! There must be gasoline in the hose, and it may be under pressure.

If there is no gasoline there, then the problem is most likely in the fuel pump or fuel tap.

And if you can try to solve the problem with the faucet yourself (rinse, blow out, clean), then it is better to entrust the problem with the gas pumps to specialists, so as not to make things worse.

About the motorcycle

I bought a motorcycle in the fall of 2012 in a neighboring village, based on an ad on the Internet. According to the photo on the Internet, the outside appearance was normal, at that time it still had the lining of the 4th model, or rather the engine from the 5th model stood on the frame of the 4th model. Also, the owner of the motorcycle gave the engine from the 4th model in addition, and the frame from the 5th model, which was taken later. When I came to buy it, the motorcycle was dirty. Despite this, it started from the first push - honestly, I didn’t expect it. The motor worked well. I asked for a ride. The engine pulled well. after all this we decided to buy it, since I didn’t have much of a choice. After the purchase, while driving home, the right cylinder failed halfway home. The engine overheated greatly and started smoking, I stopped and turned off the engine. After stopping, I tried to start the engine, but it was no use, it wouldn’t even start. And it wouldn't start at all. As usual, based on experience on the old Riga moped, I tried to do everything, checked the spark plugs, there was a spark, adjusted the ignition, and generally tricked it for half an hour. Started up. but the right cylinder still did not work. To avoid a wedge, we had to tow it by car the rest of the way. After arriving, I took off the stroller (yes, she has a light blue stroller) and started tinkering with this contact ignition. I changed the capacitor, reconfigured the ignition, installed normal working BOSCH spark plugs from the car. I'm trying to start it. I fired it up several times, and lo and behold, it started up and worked on both boilers! My joy knew no bounds, the engine roared cheerfully. Then I filled up with more gasoline and went for a ride with friends in my village. While I was riding, I was happy and smiling that I finally had my own normal motorcycle. I wasn’t driving fast, I was afraid to turn the handle more, the motorcycle was very fast for me. A month later, they brought a frame from model 5 without an engine, partially rearranged the trim from it... I installed a contactless ignition system on the hall sensor from a VAZ in the same year, and later soldered the optical sensor. The next year, the engine jammed, I had to inject it, and in one go I changed the consumables (except for the pistons). After reassembly, I completely got rid of the problem of the pot not working. The engine became faster and pulled many times stronger than before. In the summer I changed the pistons, tuned the panel a little, rearranged the lining from 4, prepared the lining from 5 for painting, bought the missing parts (carrots, covers, etc.) The motorcycle was then completely disassembled to paint the frame. The painting of the frame was completed back in August 2013, I started assembling the motorcycle, I really wanted to ride =). I bought turn signals, completely reassembled the wiring, adjusted the lights, and at the same time rode it without lining (it had a tank from 4 and a saddle). Later, in September 2013, we completed painting the cladding from model 5. a week after painting I installed everything on IZh. Well, so to speak, subscribe!! Gasoline supply

If the faucet flows fuel normally, check to see if sediment has accumulated in the carburetor float chamber. Open the drain hole, drain the contents, close it, and try to start the engine again.

To find out whether gasoline is entering the combustion chamber itself, you will need a spark plug wrench. Remove the armor wire from the spark plug, open the tap and operate the starter, then unscrew the spark plug and inspect the insulator. If it is dry, there is a problem with the fuel supply. A wet spark plug will need to be dried before screwing it back in.

Fuel quality

Normal operation of the internal combustion engine depends on the quality of gasoline. Moreover, when “hot” the engine is less susceptible to this factor, but “when cold” it may not start at all.

If your motorcycle does not start after a recent refueling, you may have been given poor quality fuel. If you refueled from a canister, condensation, rust particles or sand could get into the tank along with gasoline.

To correct the situation, drain low-quality gasoline from the fuel tank and carburetor. With injection engines it is more difficult - in order to drain fuel from the tank, you may have to remove the fuel module. This way, low-quality fuel will not pass through the pump and fine filter.

If you don't know how to get to the spark plugs or carburetor, don't torture yourself and your motorcycle in vain. Contact the professionals: call a field service specialist or call a motorcycle tow truck.

The motorcycle did not start after a long period of inactivity

During the cold season, the motorcycle may not start due to condensation collected in the tank or inlet pipe, carburetor float chamber or air filter housing. It is also worth remembering that gasoline has a limited shelf life.

If the motorcycle has been parked all winter, change the gasoline, oil, spark plugs, fuel and air filters. Check the condition of the wiring.

Checking cylinder compression.

If the Minsk motorcycle still does not start, then you need to check the compression. To do this, you need to unscrew the spark plug and pour a few grams of gasoline directly into the cylinder through the vacated hole.

Next, tighten the spark plug and try to start the motorcycle. After this, the engine should start and after running at full speed for a few seconds, stall.

If the motorcycle starts, then you should move on to more careful adjustment of the carburetor. Namely, using the appropriate bolts, try to adjust the opening of the idle air damper and adjust the proportions of the mixture entering the combustion chamber.

If the Minsk motorcycle does not start, there is a spark - this means that the mixture entering the combustion chamber does not reach the required compression and does not ignite.

There are many reasons why there may be no compression in the cylinder of a Minsk motorcycle:

  • If the engine is equipped with valves, you may need to check for cracks on them. Also, the valves may not fit tightly to the “seat” or it may have quite a lot of wear.
  • Burnout of the cylinder head gasket due to wear;
  • Cylinder seizure due to engine overheating;
  • Severe wear on the cylinder or piston;
  • The cylinder rings have collapsed or are not installed correctly;
  • Cracks have formed on the piston or cylinder due to long use;
  • For engines equipped with valves, the gas distribution valve circuit may be broken, or this mechanism may not be installed correctly.

Therefore, for subsequent diagnosis of a malfunction of the Minsk motorcycle, it is necessary to completely disassemble the cylinder. It should be done slowly and ensure the cleanliness of all components.

Armed with patience, you need to examine all available spare parts for faults, defects, or simply incorrect installation.

Having made a lot of effort to carry out the described manipulations, it is safe to say that all attempts were made to eliminate the cause of the motorcycle malfunction: the functionality of the fuel system and ignition system was checked, and the presence of compression was checked.

But if the Minsk motorcycle still fails to start, then perhaps you should contact a motorcycle service center with specialized specialists for accurate diagnostics and subsequent repair of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle sat in a barn for 2.5 years... due to a dead piston...

I pulled it out, washed it, removed the head, cylinders, installed NEW ones: pistons, rings, spark plugs, high-voltage wires, all the gaskets that came along the way...

I collected everything in a pile, placed a car battery next to it, ran the wires, pumped up the carburetor with gasoline - the result was zero, it won’t start, it won’t even catch...

Attempt 2: put 2-3 drops of gasoline into the cylinders - 0 emotions. Attempt 3: we hooked a cable to mark 2 :), dragged 500 meters to the 2nd... byrk byrk byrk, doesn’t grab it..

We checked: the ignition was set according to the marks, the spark plugs gave an excellent spark when pulled with a cable while increasing the gas on the motorcycle, the byrk byrk was heard more clearly, so I believe that the carburetor is working.

Guys, what could be the problem? PS I myself have never disassembled or repaired motorcycles in my life... but in 2 days I kind of realized that there was nothing supernatural there.

  • I sprayed gasoline through a sprinkler for watering flowers directly into the diffuser of the carb, if there is a spark it should catch it.
    and if the marks are all OK and there is a spark, then I think it’s in the carb! Did you remove the spark plug after starting it? If it's dry, check the carb; if it's wet, there's something wrong with the ignition.

    after 2.5 years of inactivity, the carb could actually get ***** from the old gasoline, etc. take it apart, wash it and clean it all, and then try again.
