Motorcycle Triumph Daytona 955i Centennial Edition (2002)

The manufacturer describes the new 2022 Triumph Speed Triple RS as “A revolution in performance – the fastest, most torquey and most powerful Speed Triple ever” (this model is presented as a 2021 and 2022 model at the same time).

A strong statement, but the list of changes, updates, improvements and modifications at least confirms the serious intentions behind this statement. It included an updated engine, which became almost 7 kilos lighter and grew to 1160cc, a new lightweight aluminum frame, a new exhaust system, gearbox, easy-squeeze slipper clutch, quickshifter and much, much more. For a model that Triumph says is “built for the road first,” it delivers absolutely stunning performance that's well suited for the track. The manufacturer, of course, is being modest, because Triumph also conducted the test on the track.

What is this “road” road bike like on the track? I put on my gear and go ahead.

Triumph Daytona 955i – Triumph Daytona 955i

The Triumph Daytona 955i
is a sports bike produced by Triumph from 1997 to 2006. It was powered by a 955 cc (58.3 cu in) liquid-cooled inline-three four-stroke engine.
The bike was launched in 1997 as the Triumph Daytona T595
and renamed Triumph Daytona 955i in 1999.

story

The Triumph Daytona T595 was introduced in 1997 in Triumph's attempt to tap into the sports bike market. Despite the T595 name, the motorcycle featured a 955 cc in-line displacement three-cylinder engine designed in part by Lotus. Along with other triple-cylinder triumphs, Daytona helped establish the manufacturer's newly-managed and distinctive and unique three-cylinder motorcycles.

The name T595 is a cascade model of the new engine of the "T5" series and the first two numbers are at "955 cc" displacement. In 1999, the motorcycle was renamed 955i, since the T595 model name gives the impression that the motorcycle's engine is displaced to 595 cc.

Large-scale changes were made in 2001, with a complete body restyling by designer Gareth Davies, a newly designed engine boosting up to 149 horsepower with internal performance upgrades including a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons. Focused on weight reduction and better handling, the 2001 955i used a more common double-sided swing arm (DSSA) as opposed to the single-sided swing arm (GASS) of previous Daytonas. The DSSA version weighs 7.5 lb (3.4 kg) less than the GASSA due to the lighter weight of the bracket, and the DSSA version of the handle is claimed to be better than the GASSA as it has less flex in the swing arm. The 2001+ 955i version had a more compact and improved Sagem MC1000 (2-pin) electronic motor control system instead of the original Sagem MC2000 (1-pin) controller.

In 2002, a limited production Centennial Edition (CE) Daytona 955i was offered. The 955i CE had several notable additions and differences from the non-CE '02 DSSA Daytona 955i:

  • One of the Aston (British Racing) Green color options that was only offered on the 2002 955i Centennial Edition.
  • Carbon fiber fill panels between the fuel tank and tail fairing.
  • Carbon fiber fill panels between the fuel tank and the front fairing.
  • Single-sided swing arm (like the previous one and then the Daytona 955i).

In 2002, a limited production Special Edition (SE) Daytona 955i was offered. The 955i SE is similar to the C, except for the red body work and the removal of the century-old logos.

In 2004, some minor changes were made including the removal of the Jack logos from the union.

For 2005, the bodywork was revised to include horizontally split headlights, a more streamlined upper fairing, and a smaller tail "hump". The frame was also painted black, rather than the silver of all previous models. The fuel injection system was changed from bypass rail control to a non-rail return system.

Information on the Triumph Daytona 955i Centennial Edition (2002) motorcycle

In 2002, the Centennial Edition (CE) of the Daytona 955i was released in limited quantities. It had some differences from the standard model. Only 200 copies were produced. The motorcycle had a number of carbon elements. Unlike the standard version, which had cast steel connecting rods, pistons and crankshaft, the CE version had these elements made of forged steel, with the pistons being forged aluminum.

This made it possible to increase the maximum engine power. It was 147 horsepower at 10,700 rpm. The maximum torque was 100 Nm at 8200 rpm. The compression ratio was 12:1.

The front suspension was a telescopic fork with 45 mm stays, and an adjustable monoshock absorber was installed at the rear of the motorcycle. The motorcycle had a 6-speed gearbox and chain drive. The weight of the motorcycle was 191 kg, and the volume of the gas tank was 21 liters.

The front tire size was 120/70 ZR17 and the rear tire size was 190/50 ZR17. Braking is handled by two 320mm disc brakes with four-piston calipers on the front wheel and a 220mm disc brake with a two-piston caliper on the rear.

Why Triumph Speed Triple RS is called urban

In 1994, a new company revived the legendary Triumph name, and the Speed Triple was one of their first models. More than 100,000 of them were sold, and it was largely thanks to this model that the streetfighter/hypernaked/sports road category was formed and settled down, and the new Triumph gained character, fame and reputation. In subsequent years, it was eclipsed by newer models, in particular the Street Triple, which became more cubical and generally interesting, and the once legendary Speed Triple practically disappeared into history. Meanwhile, competitors were making 200-horsepower hypernaked bikes like the Kawasaki H2, Ducati Streetfighter V4, and many others were approaching this figure. In 2021 and 2022, the Speed Triple RS aims to restore honor and respect to the legendary name and take a new position in the market. Actually, that’s why the more basic versions were removed from the line and only RS was left with all the technologies and top-end components.

It's not entirely clear why Triumph calls the Triumph Speed Triple RS a "city bike first and foremost" - and then tests it on a track. With fully adjustable suspension, a very tractable engine and even adjustable control arms, the Speed Triple is a truly capable road performer, but can it really deliver on the road? We'll see.

Triumph Speed Triple RS 2021 and 2022

In the meantime, I know for sure that the Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS 2021-2022 is an excellent track motorcycle, equipped with top-end components, riding modes for all conditions, and an engine that can outperform almost any in-line four. So for those guys who come to the track under their own power, the Speed Triple is an excellent option, the capabilities of which will not be so easy to exhaust, and at the same time comfortable in normal city use.
