Suzuki VZ 800 Desperado (Marauder)
Brief review of Suzuki VZ 800 Desperado (Marauder)
The Suzuki VZ 800 Desperado cruiser was originally developed for the Japanese domestic market, and all models with this name sold on the Russian secondary market are domestic Japanese. Since 1997, an export version of the model was produced, sold in the USA and Europe and called the Suzuki VZ 800 Marauder, completely identical to the domestic Japanese one (the US version differed in the speedometer markings and the use of inch fasteners instead of metric ones). The motorcycle was popular in the USA, and was produced for another five years after the domestic Japanese version was removed from the assembly line.
The motorcycle was produced in two versions - the regular one and the Desperado VZ 800X, which featured a pre-installed fairing and plow (lower fairing). The engine for this model was a proven V-twin from the Suzuki Intruder 800 cruiser, which has good traction at low and medium speeds. Also on the same basis, the Suzuki Desperado 400 model was designed, differing from the 800 cc version in the cylinder block, gas tank and several little things.

Modifications
It is a rare cruiser model that can boast such an abundance of modifications that have always found their fans.
It's time to arrange all the modifications in chronological order. But first, it is worth noting that some left the market in order to make way for a more modern modification, while others were simply discontinued due to obsolescence. Two lists below - year of birth, year of departure.
- 1983 Honda NV750 Custom.
- 1986 - Honda Shadow 750. Replacement of the name, processing of both the filling and appearance.
- 1997 - Honda Shadow 750 ACE (sold in America only) Shadow 400 is released for Japanese markets.
- 2000 - The birth of ACE Вeluxe, the filling of which repeats the Gold Wihg of the same years.
- 2000 - Launch of Honda VT750DC Shadow Spirit. In Japan it goes by the name Slasher, in European markets - Black Widow.
- 2003 - Honda VT750C Aero.
- 2007 - Honda VT750C2 Shadow Spirit, an update to the previously released VT750C.
- 2009 - Honda VT750C2B Phantom (sometimes called Black Spirit), Aero in black packaging.
- 2010 - Honda Shadow RS.
The first couple of versions leave the market replacing each other.
- 1986 Honda NV750 Custom.
- 1997 - Honda Shadow 750.
Next, the intervals add up like this:
- 2003 - Honda Shadow 750 ACE leaves, Aero becomes its successor.
- 2007 - Slasher, Japanese and versions of other countries, becomes history.
- 2013 - Honda Shadow RS goes away.
- 2015 - completion of production of the Honda VT750C2 Shadow Spirit.
Of the total number of models on the assembly line, only Aero and Phantom remained. The release of both continues, taking into account new technological solutions and requirements.
Motorcycle modifications
- Honda NV750. The very first version, produced from 1983 to 1985. It has the most powerful engine (66 hp), and is almost never found on sale due to its advanced age. It was equipped with a cardan and a 6-speed gearbox.
- Honda Shadow 750 ACE (American Classic Edition), 1997-2001. Chain drive wheels, a 14-liter gas tank, deep fenders, a heavy appearance and one balancer shaft instead of two, so that American bikers enjoy the vibrations that are so dear to their hearts.
- Honda Shadow 750 Aero. Produced from 2004 to the present. Equipped with a cardan drive.
- Honda Shadow 750 Phantom. No different from the Aero, except for the matte black color scheme. Still in production today.
- Honda Shadow Slasher 750, Black Widow in some markets. It is a slightly modified Honda Shadow ACE, but with a thin front wheel of increased radius and a gas tank reduced by 1 liter. Produced from 2000 to 2007.
- Honda Shadow VT750RS. Outwardly, it resembles a hybrid between a cruiser and a classic road motorcycle; the differences are clearly visible in the photo. It features the smallest gas tank - 10 liters and a direct fit. The model was not popular, and therefore was produced only briefly, from 2010 to 2013. The wheel drive is a chain.
FAQ
- Is it possible to stick an old full-power motor into the frame of a new model? No, both the frames and engines are different, so such a conversion is impossible without a deep rework of the entire motorcycle. But this is expensive and pointless; it’s easier to just buy a “liter” right away.
- What is the real maximum comfortable speed for the engine to work without strain? About 130-140 km/h. But already at 150 km/h the engine screams so loudly that you feel sorry for it.
- Are spare parts interchangeable between different modifications? 50/50, depending on the year of manufacture and what specific spare part we are talking about. For example, you can transfer a fork from an Aero to a Spirit, but then you will have to change the front wheel as well. But their seats are different, they differ in fasteners.

Estimated cost
The 750 cc motorcycles of the legendary Shadow line were undeservedly forgotten at one time, not having time to really “light up” due to some duties.
But time has passed and this motorcycle is again in this line.
You can now find new 750 cc motorcycles in the Shadow line at dealers. But they won't be very cheap.
For the VT750DC Shadow Spirit model you will have to pay a little more than 800,000 rubles. And the VT750DC Shadow Black Spirit model will cost even more, about 825,000 rubles.
Despite the long period in which a motorcycle with an engine of this size was not produced, this model is still quite common and there are more than enough offers for it on the secondary market.
The prices for it are very varied, since the cost takes into account technical equipment. condition and performance of the motorcycle, its year of production.
So, on the secondary market, a Honda Shadow with a 750 cc engine. cm can be found with a price from 100,000 to 600,000 rubles.
Where can I buy
You can purchase a Honda Shadow from official dealers in your city, while paying for a full-fledged and new model, or you can sell the Honda Shadow on secondary markets for selling goods
Please note that price may vary depending on the region of purchase
If you decide to take the goods by hand, for example, through Avito, then be extremely careful in relation not only to the transport, but also to the seller. Do not carry out such transactions with a seller without a reputation
It is also important to review all the necessary documents for the motorcycle, make sure there are no fines and the not-so-nice “Stolen” status. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions about the product you are going to pay your own money for.
Brief history of the model
- 1992 – start of production and sales of the Suzuki VS800 Intruder model.
- 1996 – start of production and sales of the Suzuki VZ800 Desperado model (in the USA – Marauder).
- 2001 – start of production and sales of the Suzuki VL800 Intruder Volusia model. For the Japanese market, based on this model, a version was developed - Suzuki VL400 Intruder Classic.
- 2005 - all of the above models were combined into the Boulevard series (for the US market) and Intruder (for the European market). The motorcycles received significant external changes, an engine fuel injection system (except for the Boulevard S50) and a number of other updates. The Suzuki VZ800 Marauder/Desperado model (now Boulevard M50, Intruder M800) receives a cardan drive instead of a chain drive. The Suzuki Boulevard 400 model appears for the domestic Japanese market.
- 2010 – the Suzuki Boulevard S50 model is discontinued. The Boulevard M50 model is equipped with the same engine as the Boulevard C50, a small front fairing is added, and the shape of the wings and tank is changed, gaining common visual features with the M109R model.
