Modifications of the Izh Planet 5 motorcycle
The produced modifications of Planet-5 may come with various improvements and expansions of the configuration compared to the original 1987 model:
- alloy wheels
- 2 mufflers
- oil pump (on Izh “Planet 5-01”)
- modernized starting system
- reinforced chain in the gearbox
- upgraded shock absorbers in wheel suspensions, equipped with rebound springs
- pneumatic adjustment of the front wheel suspension
- disc brake front
- upgraded rear wheel brake device
- presence of a half-fairing, knee pads, luggage holder
It is fair to conclude, summing up this review: Izh “Planet-5” remains a worthy city and intercity vehicle for those who value good traction and rough engine roar, who like to spend a lot of time with a screwdriver in their hand, as well as those who ready for the characteristic oil smell from your biker equipment.

Experience with IZ
my experience with Izh Planet 5 - you fix it for a week, ride for two days (I got it already dead)
I'll tell anyone who's interested. The 1992 motorcycle is single, they installed a cradle from an old motorcycle, first my grandfather rode it, then my uncle killed it, now I’m finishing it. It stood from 2005 to 2021. When I dug it up, it was a typical boy’s spendthrift, which drove, but was not serviced. I took it apart down to the bolt, let’s just say there is no such unit that I wouldn’t take apart and make! I have more than 10 thousand on the speedak, I have already driven 11) The engine is dead, but it was enough to cripple my leg and start. I tinkered with it all summer, because before that I had nothing to do with technology at all! had a bike at most, then studied it, and eventually made it, although not perfectly. The contact ignition failed once, the capacitor filled up, began to flood, began to stall and would not start. Among the features: 3rd gear slipped, but not 2nd, since 2nd had already been cured by someone. I went through the box twice and adjusted it, the problem disappeared. In general, he had many such “peculiarities”)) and many more adventures.
what was done:
- the cylinder is bored out and everything is new (I’m very glad that the shitty rings ate up the entire liner and provided a gap of two tens instead of the bored 0.05, otherwise an equally shitty piston would have simply smeared all over it) - all speeds in the box work perfectly - the engine runs smoothly , smoothly, starts the first time (and doesn’t even leak from the box, or anywhere at all) - 90 (nothing was modified, not even a 68 carb) - all sorts of little things for completeness - changed the fork stays (these have two mounting options, but I I like it better with one, as it was) -steering bearings -rebuilt front and rear shock absorbers -replaced the black half-rotten front fender with chrome and a lot more to bring it to the point where it sat down and went anywhere comfortably
I am planning a complete 2.0 rebuild of the engine, I will make the landings hard using a clamp, and in general I will put everything on a clamp so that I can simply assemble it and not have to mess with this engine anymore. Well, I can’t figure out the wiring, either the battery is dead, or it’s consuming energy somewhere.
In the summer I stupidly rode it, gained experience working with equipment (I repaired this miracle every day), went to the river, did a lot of enduring through the forests, just drove around the village, or to the store. I drive without a license and without documents, I almost got caught once, eh, at the end of summer!
In general, I could easily make it new (in terms of the engine and chassis) and make my nameplate 120, but I don’t have the machines to restore the bearing fits, sharpen the cylinders, and all that, I don’t have money, in general, even for spare parts, not something for a drill and cutters.
I'm not going to paint it, let it be as it is!
The first 2 are November photos from the last trip this season! the last one in the summer. I know that the silencer pipe is screwed on incorrectly
Izh Cross
Greetings to all connoisseurs of motocross motorcycles! The “All About Moto” website, and in particular its sections related to motorcycle mechanics, will enlighten you about the tuning that creates enduro bikes.
Today we will talk about Izh Cross. After reading this article, you will finally understand what this “nickname” of the iron horse is associated with.
I would like to point out right off the bat that there are no serial bikes with such an official name and never have existed. For some motorcycle enthusiasts, this term serves as another name for the legendary Izh Planet Sport. Others carry out sports tuning of a bike from the Izhevsk Motor Plant, which is later called Izh Pod Cross or Izh Planet Cross. Let us also note that Jupiters are also amenable to such modernization in domestic practice. All types of light and medium bikes are suitable for amateur cross-country reformation. And since the above-mentioned Russian motorcycles are among the most powerful in these classes, they are often taken as a base for further modernization and tuning.
Izh Cross, which can be bought today in many cities and villages (since there are many mechanical enthusiasts in our homeland). In this case, you will not have to study a sea of information regarding the features of the structural alteration of the iron horse. However, such a decision will slightly deplete your family budget.
Side trailer restoration.
Hi all. Recently I wrote a rather small article about the restoration of IZH Planeta 5, in which I said that I would write about the side trailer separately, because there is also quite a lot of material, for a separate article, as for me, it is being typed. So, I didn’t come to the restoration of the side trailer right away, because I had completely forgotten about its existence. First, I’ll tell you the story of his discovery, so it will be clearer what state he was in at the beginning. The trailer was purchased with a motorcycle, but was immediately uncoupled, because in those years they were needed mainly for transporting various cargo, both useful and not very useful, they almost never carried passengers, it was apparently “not fashionable.” So, the trailer was unhooked and left in the old garage, correction, in a damp garage. The garage was made of 40-50 percent wood, over time it all began to rot successfully, the floor, ceiling, door, and with them the trailer itself, and if the motorcycle stood for 5 years, then the trailer was about 6-7 years old. It stood uncovered, in the shade, the sun did not fall on it, just like in the garage in principle, yes, there was such a garage, only doors, no windows. As a result, when I remembered it in 2015, after arriving at that garage, I was not particularly pleasantly surprised. The trailer began to rot rather quickly; it was mainly the bottom of the trunk itself, the walls, and the hood that rotted, but it was the bottom that suffered the most. The fabric awning also almost completely rotted, the seat began to rot a little, but not much, I will later revive it. For the first time in so many years, my friends and I rolled it out onto the street, the tire was flat, we took the pump, started pumping it, and, strangely enough, the camera turned out to be intact. We inflated the tire, attached the trailer itself to the motorcycle, and drove off to a new house, a new garage, to inspect all the consequences of the downtime. As a result, more small problems were discovered, for example, a broken rear trunk lock, a non-functional trailer brake cable, and other little things. In terms of the electrics and chassis, oddly enough, everything was more than OK; it was immediately obvious that it had not been used at all. Even the tires were like new, with small cracks again due to inactivity. Looking at the trailer as a whole, not entirely positive thoughts came to mind, the years and moisture had taken a toll on it, and already in the process of restoring the Planet itself, I decided that I needed to immediately make the trailer as well.
By the way, there aren’t really any photographs, because there was no time for that then, and I didn’t yet know about the existence of the MOTO2 portal, that is, there was no one to take photographs for. Now, of course, I regret it, but there’s nothing you can do about it. I'll continue. Disassembly began, again down to the last nut and bolt, the trailer was completely disassembled, here are a few photos that I took for myself, so as not to forget where and what, there are very few diagrams on the Internet for them, and I had to do it this way, later the photos are very will help me a lot. What was done to the trailer:
1) The trailer itself is completely disassembled.
2) A complete troubleshooting of all working parts was carried out (chassis, electrical, etc.)
3) All parts needing polishing have been polished.
4) White direction indicators and light bulbs in an orange shell were purchased.
5) Photos of the stickers were taken, and their exact location was measured using a ruler so that it would not differ from the original. I ordered stickers, I couldn’t easily find them on the Internet, I had to make an individual order.
6) Everything that should have been in one or another lubricant was lubricated, cables, wheel hub, pendulum, etc.
In my opinion, this is basically all the work that was carried out, a couple of little things like cutting out the sides of the trailer interior from fresh chipboard, etc. I won’t write because it’s not interesting to everyone.
Now comes the hardest part and the fight, the fight against corrosion. There was a lot of it on the trailer, especially at the bottom of the trunk.
It was decided to strip it down to fresh metal, cover the bottom with an anti-gravel layer and then everything according to the standard, primer, paint, varnish. Remember, it will never be possible to defeat metal corrosion 100%; it is almost impossible, and even if it is real, it will cost a lot of money, which not everyone has. Corrosion can only be stopped, then in 5-7 years everything will resume, and you will have to do everything all over again, alas, there is no other way. After cleaning the trailer, my friend sprayed some kind of spray on the affected parts of the metal, I don’t know what it was, and by the way, yes, I didn’t do the trunk itself and the painting myself, I gave it to a knowledgeable person, the process is responsible and I didn’t take any risks. Then the time approached for assembly, and then my imagination ran wild. The first thought, and in fact the only one that came to fruition, was to install an audio system, initially at 50 watts, but alas, the Planet generator could not be taken out, and simply burned out. Therefore, I made do with installing a 15-watt WIRZ audio system on the motorcycle, yes, China, but not very cheap, it even comes with a remote control I ran its receiver (cable) forward to make it more convenient to switch tracks. By the way, 15 watts is enough, it’s quite loud and the passenger and driver can hear everything, even everything is quite clear and legible to those around. Also, one of the ideas was to install a heated passenger seat, but what about making a trailer so just make it “Lux” :))) but alas, the power of such a “curtain” is about 50 watts, and again the generator looked at me reluctantly, and I gave up this idea. A safety bar was also purchased, on which a “luxury” awning could be pulled, and they are not afraid of rain or wind. But alas, I couldn’t find the Soviet awning, and the Chinese gentlemen couldn’t make the dimensions correct, and it simply didn’t reach the fastening buttons. That's why I'm still looking for a suitable case. I also had an idea to install a thermometer for the ambient temperature, I will do that too soon. Next came the idea of casting, a third casting was purchased and painted in the color of the wheels, like on a motorcycle, but it turned out that the bearing seats were broken, I had to do it, and for a while a regular wheel on spokes was installed. And so, the assembly began, all the parts were installed in their place, each bolt received an engraver and a washer, as well as lubricant and, where necessary, thread restoration. The trailer was assembled, the assembly of wiring and lights began, all the indicators were polished and washed to perfection. Glass also did not bypass this process. And so on again for painting. A thick layer of anti-gravel coating, 3 layers of primer, 4-5 layers of paint, and 2-3 layers of varnish followed by polishing. So I struggled with the trailer, and in the end it turned out very nice. By the way, it’s very soft, you can sleep in it if you want. Later I’ll “stuff in” some other fun things, alas, the technical characteristics of the motorcycle don’t allow me to do everything, but still there are no limits to my imagination, and I’ll describe all the innovations in separate articles. Thank you all so much for your attention!;) write, ask questions, I will always answer;) good luck to everyone, take care of yourself and your equipment, in the end according to the standard, what happened in the end, good luck
