Motorcycle IZH Planet 3 fuel consumption per 100 km.

IZH Planet 3 is a popular motorcycle; during Soviet times it was one of the most common models in its class. Planet-3 belongs to the middle segment, and is intended for public roads, as well as off-road. The model entered production in 1971, and production continued until 1977. Over all the years of production, the IZH plant has assembled almost half a million motorcycles of the same name. In 1977, an updated modification appeared with the index 3-01, which was produced until 1981. During this period, over 400 thousand copies were produced. Then the latest modification of the 3rd generation IZH Planet family came out. We are talking about version 3-02, which was produced in the amount of 216 thousand units. Production of the entire IZH Planet-3 family was discontinued in 1985. The motorcycle was replaced by the Planet-4 model.

Motorcycle IZH Planet 3 owner reviews

  • David, Nizhny Novgorod region. I decided to share my impressions about this miracle of technology. A solid, powerful motorcycle with low fuel consumption. This machine is unpretentious in maintenance. In order not to look for spare parts, I bought another identical motorcycle as a donor, so now I have all the parts in stock. There is probably no point in constantly messing with the engine - it is quite reliable. We can conclude that IZH Planet 3 is ideal for village paths, because its chassis is perfectly adapted for driving over potholes, gullies, stones and potholes. It’s quite difficult for a motorcycle to survive in cold weather, so I ride mostly when there is no snow - even in winter. In frosty weather the engine starts reliably, but not always. There are unpredictable surprises with him that you have to put up with. The maximum speed is about 100 km/h, which is enough for me. Moreover, I ride mostly off-road, and on such roads you can rarely even accelerate to 80. I was pleased that many details were unified with other “Planets”. For example, I dismantled my original rusty gas tank and installed a tank from Planet-2 (a “Droplet” type tank). I also installed glove compartments from Planet 5. And finally, I borrowed the panel from Planet 4, it looks much more solid than the “egg” from Planet 3. The cylinder is installed from the fifth generation model. The muffler and gearbox were also eventually installed from Planet-5. The tires also had to be updated, as the motorcycle was quite old and needed a major overhaul. The gasoline consumption per 100 km for Planet-3 is 3-4 liters per hundred. The motorcycle is worth the money.
  • Kirill, Volgograd. I am the owner of a 1980 IZH Planeta-3 motorcycle, I am the second owner. The model has been in use for 12 months. Among the advantages, I will briefly highlight the reliability, simplicity and maintainability of the motorcycle. It handles clearly, brakes effectively and rides comfortably over uneven roads and along bumpy country roads. Undoubtedly, this is the best representative of the Planet motorcycle family. In addition, this is the most common model compared to other ILs. It is so easy to repair that even the Planet-3 engine can be repaired by an inexperienced mechanic or an untrained driver. A motorcycle can also be repaired in the field, provided (of course) that you have a special tool that can be stored in the sidecar. But if the motorcycle is not often used off-road, then there will be no problems with repairs at all - if only because there will be almost no breakdowns! The engine is not boosted, without a turbine and other unnecessary bells and whistles, because of which it reduces its service life, but is of no benefit. The dynamics are normal, for my needs the engine power is enough with a reserve. A clear instruction manual will help you understand the engine. You can count the engine systems on one hand - ignition, fuel system (carburetor). They can be easily adjusted, just like the clutch. The bike has generous low-end torque to compensate for regular maintenance. At low speeds the engine operates pleasantly - in the sense that, unlike modern engines, it does not have sudden and excessive power at the bottom. The gas supply is smooth, without jerks or sudden starts. In the city you can achieve 4 liters per hundred, off-road about 5 liters.
  • Sergey, Kazan. I have a motorcycle IZH Planeta-3 manufactured in 1990, I have only used it for three years. But this was enough to appreciate this miracle of technology. I decided to remember my childhood and bought a used Planet, I always dreamed of it - as a child (in the Soviet years) I rode a motorcycle with friends, but at the same time I always wanted to have my own transport, but there was no money. Now I have a car, but at the same time I didn’t mind remembering my childhood, and I had the opportunity to buy this horse. I took it for 1500 rubles. The motorcycle was not running. Fortunately, all the spare parts were in place; there was no need to look for anything. The motik is red. I brought it home in my own VAZ-2106 car, this is my workhorse. Since almost all the parts were in place, I only had to buy the battery, pistons, wires and clean the engine. I started the engine and my heart immediately filled with emotions that did not disappear for a long time, so to speak. I even forgot for a moment that I had a full-fledged car - I fell so much into childhood, driving Planet-3 I felt small again, but not for long, of course. The speed is about 90 km/h, it doesn’t take more. The gearbox is a four-speed manual, it works great, the shifts are very clear. Fuel consumption is around 3-4 liters. For comparison, this is two times less than the good old Urals. The motorbike is suitable for household needs and for small off-road cargo transportation. The stroller can be used to transport firewood, hay and other luggage. At the same time, consumption increases slightly. I fill up with 92-grade gasoline, no problems. I have my own garage, just right for my six and Planet.
  • Oleg, Krasnodar region. I drive a 1970 Planet-3. The 18 horsepower engine works excellently; at low speeds it loves low, medium and high speeds. At speeds of 80-90, the traction already disappears, but the adrenaline still goes through the roof. In terms of price-quality ratio, Planet-3 is the best among Soviet motorcycles of that time. It’s clear that it needs to be repaired regularly, because you shouldn’t expect miracles from old equipment. On this model, the ignition often malfunctions and needs to be adjusted. The single-cylinder engine is endowed with excellent traction, which helps off-road. The seating position is comfortable, the seat does not press. There is room for two to sit. I was pleased with the high maneuverability due to the short wheelbase, which is not surprising - after all, this is a middle-class motorcycle, but it is perceived as a lightweight two-wheeler, it is like a moped. A serious drawback is the weak 6-watt generator. This chassis and engine could use a 12 W generator. Unfortunately, it is only available in the 4th model, which I did not find in good condition. Izh Planet-3 consumes 3-4 liters in the city, on the highway you can keep within 3 liters, no more. Full support for both 76, 80 and 92 gasoline. And pouring 95 into the Planet for the sake of increasing dynamics is generally suicide, I don’t see the point in it. The appearance is normal, but the four are certainly prettier.
  • Pavel, Kyiv. I’ll tell you about my Planet-3, which I inherited from my grandfather. I’m generally an expert on Soviet motorcycles, I’ve read well about each model. I did not ignore Planet-3 - in fact, this is a deep modernization of the IZH-56 and IZH-Planet2 models. The main differences can be seen in dynamics, efficiency and design. Power increased to 18 horses. Comfort is also better - at least vibrations at idle and high speeds have disappeared. The gearbox works better thanks to changed gear ratios; due to this feature, the two-wheeler has a higher maximum speed. I will also note the changes in the side trailer, which has acquired a square shape. Thanks to this, the trailer has become more spacious. Its design has also changed. Perhaps Planet-3 borrowed only advantages from its predecessors, and at the same time added improvements. As long as I drive it, it never fails on a long road, off-road or anywhere else. Gasoline consumption is 5 liters maximum. It is comfortable to sit down and sit comfortably, more comfortable than in the previous generation. In Soviet times, these motorcycles were like gold; they are probably still kept by grandfathers, who from time to time also want to ride, remember their childhood, so to speak. The main disadvantage of Planet-3 is the high toxicity of exhaust gases, which do not even meet basic Euro standards. Of course, all this is nit-picking, because what kind of ecology could we be talking about in the 50s when this motorcycle was built. The power unit is absolutely trouble-free, but very noisy, and a lot of black and smelly smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe. In addition, Planet-3 is a frankly weak 6-watt generator, the power of which is not enough even for basic things - for example, to illuminate the road. The battery also drains quickly with frequent driving. There are many other shortcomings, but the Planet-3 motorcycle is worth the money spent, no matter what condition it is in. If you have direct hands, this device will serve its next owner faithfully.
  • Garik, Kemerovo. This motorcycle belongs to my godfather, he sometimes lets me ride. In general, I often come across this motik, because my friends from the village still have it. This old lady apparently doesn't care about age. I have no idea how Planet-3 still works (I’m talking about the godfather’s motorcycle). The godfather bought this car from a semi-assembled state. It took about three weeks to assemble, no more. For the first time, the engine was started successfully, without dancing with a tambourine. True, problems already arose during the trip - the gearbox was knocked out of second gear, and in general the gearbox worked with a stretch - gears were shifted lazily. My well-read godfather couldn’t leave it all like that, and decided to rebuild the entire transmission. True, for this I had to re-read a bunch of reviews, literature and writings on the Internet - and this in order to find more or less adequate disassembly instructions. As a result, the godfather managed to fix the problems, and the gearbox worked as expected. Moreover, thanks to lubrication and overhaul of the gearbox, the dynamics have noticeably improved, and gears began to engage more clearly. We have been riding a motorcycle for more than five years, during which time we have not had a single major repair, with the exception of an incident with the gearbox. The exterior, of course, leaves much to be desired. All the paint on the motorcycle has peeled off, but the godfather laughs it off and says it doesn’t affect the reliability. The main thing is that the body is intact, there is no rust, and nothing is leaking anywhere. However, the stroller still had to be updated - it was completely rotten and rusty. After much rework, the godfather decided to abandon this idea. Instead of a stroller, an iron frame was welded and installed in place of the stroller. This frame is great for transporting goods. The motorcycle consumes 4-5 liters per 100 km. The dynamics are normal, as is the handling.

Improvement of technical parameters

Tuning to increase power.

The design of the motorcycle engine allows for tuning to increase its power. One option is to re-press the engine crankshaft and change the support bearings. Usually, secondary shaft bearings from a Java motorcycle were installed as new bearings. This restoration made it possible to achieve an increase in engine power of the IZH Planet - 5 by 10-15%.

The next option for adding power was to increase the cylinder volume. For this purpose, its upper part was cut off and the sleeve was bored to 76 mm. Then the appropriate piston was installed, usually a piston from a Planet Sport motorcycle was used.

Increasing the speed of the motorcycle.

After this operation, the speed of the motorcycle increased, according to some sources, to 160 km per hour. Therefore, work to increase engine capacity was carried out by owners who planned to operate their vehicle mainly on highways.

The most difficult technical tuning option for adding power to the IZH Planet - 5 is the installation of supercharging. For this purpose, an exhaust valve is installed, the device of which corresponds to the analogues on the sports versions.

Then an exhaust resonator is installed, which has sharply directed parameters. Its task is to create a wave backpressure of the fuel mixture. Next, a spool valve is installed to obtain asymmetrical phases of engine operation, which avoids the direct release of the spent mixture.

Performing supercharging on the engine of the Fifth Planet is a rather complex process and therefore is not widely used.

Improved grip.

As engine power increases, it is necessary to carry out work to improve the clutch. Under standard conditions, the standard clutch works reliably.

But as the load increases, the risk of “burning” it and subsequent repairs increases sharply. The main steps for tuning the clutch come down to replacing standard discs with larger metal ones. Typically, such discs are made of two millimeter iron.

The use of thicker metal discs reduces slippage, warping, breakage and provides greater heat transfer.

Appearance tuning.

If external tuning of a motorcycle changes the design and makes it recognizable, then tuning the technical characteristics almost always reduces the resource of the power unit. Therefore, when starting to modify his motorcycle, the owner should always remember that modernization can bring not only benefits, but also harm.

Tuning the IZH Planet-5 motorcycle is the dream of many boys, which they sometimes begin to realize only in adulthood, when they can afford to purchase a product from the Izhevsk Motor Plant. Then you can get serious about Planet 5. Their male and sometimes female children and grandchildren join such “operations”, joining the amazing and mysterious world of the motorcycle maker.

Change in appearance.

Despite the fact that the design of the fifth Planet model was probably the most interesting among all domestic motorcycles, tuning the IZH Planet - 5 motorcycle most often began with the appearance. The main reason for this was that work to change the external image can be classified as the simplest, not requiring deep technical knowledge and skills.

For this purpose, the following main work was carried out:

  • double-sided arches and knee guards were installed;
  • the windshield was replaced;
  • higher wings were mounted;
  • direction indicators were replaced;
  • the muffler pipe was replaced;
  • enlarged side mirrors were installed.

Complete or partial tuning operations to change the appearance immediately made the motorcycle recognizable and different from its serial counterpart.
