WHAT CATEGORY IS NEEDED FOR A MOTORCYCLE AND HOW TO GET IT

A category “A” license gives the driver the right to drive a motorcycle. They are one of the easiest to obtain. Motorcycles with a small engine capacity, as well as mopeds, are available for riding from the age of 16, but only with open categories M or A1.

You can drive powerful motorcycles and motorcycles with sidecars from the age of 18. Training is easier for those who know the rules of the road or already have an open category B.

Category A training includes the same as category B – a car, the only difference is control exercises during practical driving training and the cost of training. Learning to ride a motorcycle is significantly cheaper and costs around 10-15 thousand rubles. Of course, not counting the fact that you will then have to go broke paying for the medical examination (about 2,000 rubles) and the state fee for obtaining a license (still 2,000 rubles).

How to learn to ride a motorcycle

Learning to ride a motorcycle takes place in several stages. The first stage is common to all categories of driver's license: studying the rules of the road.

You can learn traffic rules for subsequent passing of the traffic police exam either at a driving school or on your own - manuals containing the rules are updated annually in bookstores. This is important - you should not try to learn the rules from outdated textbooks.

The second stage is learning to drive a motorcycle. For many novice drivers, the motorcycle itself looks scary, because it is known that falls or collisions at high speed often cause disability or death.

Therefore, it is better to approach the exam with practical experience. It is clear that riding around the city on the two-wheeled “horse” at your disposal is not the best option, where learning to ride a motorcycle is fraught with either an accident or an administrative penalty from the traffic police.

Motorcycle driving is taught only at the race track. Of course, just like in a car, no one will sit next to you. The instructor will explain the maneuvers, and you will practice them yourself on a training vehicle under his supervision.

Which motorcycles do not require licenses or registration according to the law in 2021?

In accordance with Russian legislation, a driver's license is not required to drive motorcycles whose power ratings are less than those required for the "M" category.

In addition, in 2021, a license is not required to drive the following motorcycle vehicles:

  • motocross motorcycles that cannot be ridden on public roads;

  • snowmobiles, which can only move on snow;

  • with an ATV when driving on rough terrain, a tractor license may be required (from 16 years of age);

  • a bicycle with a removable low-power internal combustion engine;

  • mono-wheels - you can ride them only on special bicycle paths, where they are considered equal to bicycles; outside the sidewalk they are equal to mopeds.

Traveling on the vehicles described above is allowed without any documents. In addition, they are not required to register with the traffic police.

How long does driving school last?

The full course of study is divided into theory and practice. According to the law, it takes 2.5 months to fully prepare for the exam.

  • You will have to spend at least 108 hours on theoretical classes. The traffic rules are the same for everyone. Therefore, I will explain to you, as well as to future motorists, the categories of road signs and how to read each of them correctly. They will also talk about the operation of traffic lights and the rules of first aid on the roads. By the way, the “Medicine” section is often explained by a real doctor working in emergency ambulances. Usually, no more than 4 hours are allocated for such classes. In addition, together with the teacher, you decide on the tickets that will appear in the exam. As you study, they will explain to you in detail what kind of ticket it is and how it is solved. That is, from you, in an amicable way, all that is required is presence and normal memory.
  • You will conduct practical training at the race track. On average, 18 hours are allotted for driving. It all depends on the driving school where you will study. The instructor will teach you how to perform the following exercises: “Overall corridor”, “Overall semicircle”, “Acceleration - braking”. In other words, you will need to start in first gear at the starting gate. Then drive in a straight line, reach the control post, signal for a left turn by extending your left hand up, and, having passed the counter, lower your hand. Similarly, you will need to make a semicircle, switch speeds from low to high and stop at the finish line by giving a signal.

Also used are the exercises “Snake” (drive like a snake, going around the marking cones), “Rut board” (drive straight along the rut board), “Move at low speed” (everything is clear here) and “Overall eight” (first drive in a straight line in the overall corridor, then along the figure eight trajectory and return to the finish). The same tasks will be completed in the exam.

Be careful. Since the instructor does not sit next to you, but watches your movement while standing on the road, he sees very well any slightest errors.

Is a driver's license required for scooters with an engine up to 50cc

Thinking about the need for a driver's license for motorcyclists, many Russians wonder whether they are necessary for those who ride scooters with an engine up to 50 cc. According to federal law, this type of transport requires the driver to have a category “M” license. This means that a minor can obtain a license to drive a scooter.

Until 2013, young people could safely ride this type of motor vehicle. At that time, there were many traffic accidents, which became the main reason for the ban on driving a scooter or moped without obtaining an “M” category driver’s license.

By law, a teenager is required not only to present documents if stopped by a traffic police officer, but also to wear a motorcycle helmet. If he does not even have a passport, the vehicle will be temporarily confiscated from the young man until he pays a fine for violating traffic rules.

Some schoolchildren equip their bicycles with engines, which results in a homemade moped, which is done in order to deceive the law and move freely on this vehicle on any roads.

It is worth noting that this technique also requires a category “M” driver’s license. In order to be able to legally use motorcycles, you must take courses and pass an exam for category “A” or “A1”. The first license applies to classic and sports motorcycles, and the second license applies to light motorcycles up to 125 cc.

How to get a motorcycle license through a driving school

Experienced bikers recommend courses at a driving school that teaches category A driving licenses. Motorcycle driving is taught in the vast majority of driving schools, and exam exercises are not always immediately given even to those who have already dealt with such vehicles.

In total, the practical exam in the traffic police includes five exercises:

  • maneuvering in confined spaces;
  • braking and stopping when driving at various speeds, including emergency stop;
  • parking a vehicle and leaving a parking space;
  • stopping for safe boarding or disembarking of passengers;
  • driving through a controlled intersection.

To successfully overcome the final exam in a driving school, each cadet undergoes both theoretical and practical classes. During the training, the future motorcyclist rides for 10 hours - five practical lessons of two hours each, and also studies theory for 16 hours. This is not very much, but motorcycle training is intensive, which allows you to pass a difficult exam.

How to get a category A and A1 license for a motorcycle in 2020?

According to Russian laws, any driver driving on the roads must have an appropriate license. And it doesn’t matter how many wheels your vehicle has - four or just two. Relatively recently, the requirements for motorcycle and scooter drivers were more flexible. Since 2013, the situation has changed radically and even a scooter driver is required to undergo training at a motorcycle school.

Motorcycle license: is it possible to do without them?

The law is adamant. If you are not going to sit behind the wheel of a bicycle forever, but plan to at least occasionally get behind the wheel of at least a moped, a license is required. And this is not a whim of traffic police inspectors and motorcycle schools who want to “extract” more money from you.

A qualified driver who has undergone training clearly knows how to behave in a given traffic situation. While the “disenfranchised” driver only guesses about the correctness of his behavior on the road. And it’s good if such driving only ends with a fine and confiscation of the two-wheeled horse.

Don’t even hope that the weak engine of your scooter will be a mitigating circumstance when meeting with traffic police officers. No one has canceled age restrictions either.

But owners of motocross motorcycles can breathe easy. They do not face fines or confiscation of the vehicle for driving without a license. But as long as they remain on the territory of sports tracks.

The reason for the “indulgence” is simple: a motocross motorcycle belongs to the category of sports equipment. And as long as its owner races on dirt tracks, he does not break any rules.

At what age can you drive a motorcycle?

This parameter is directly related to the type of two-wheeled vehicle that the driver plans to drive. There are motorcycles that you can drive no earlier than 18 years old. But there are categories of vehicles available for driving from the age of 16.

Scooters, mopedsEngine capacity not exceeding 50 cubic metersFrom 16 years old
Light motorcyclesEngine capacity up to 125 ccFrom 16 years old
MotorcyclesEngine capacity is more than 125 cubic metersFrom 18 years old
Tricycles, ATVsEngine capacity from 50 cubic metersFrom 18 years old

You are allowed to start learning how to operate a motorcycle long before your 18th birthday. But be patient, you will be allowed to take the exams only when you reach this age.

What categories of motorcycle licenses are there in 2021?

The motor market is ready to offer a huge selection of motorcycles. How not to get confused in this diversity and understand which category is needed to control a particular two-wheeled horse? The classification decided everything.

Since motorcycles are different, it was decided to distinguish three categories: “M”, “A”, “A1”. Each of them makes it possible to control motorcycles with different weights and engine sizes.

Category “M” Appeared in 2013Engine capacity not exceeding 50 cubic metersMopeds (tricycles, scooters); quads; mokiki; scooters
Category “A1” (most common among teenagers)engine capacity from 50 to 125 cubic meters; maximum power – up to 11 kW. Light motorcycles
Category "A"engine capacity up to 125 cubic meters; vehicle weight in running order up to 400 kg Motorcycles

If the future driver has already crossed the 18-year mark, it makes sense to study for category “A”. In this case, “M” and “A1” will be given to him as bonuses. The significant date is far away, but you really want to drive, choose “M” or “A1” - depending on your vehicle.

License for a motorcycle with a sidecar

Are you planning to buy a motorcycle with a sidecar? Hurry up to get your category “A” license. For your own safety, do not be lazy to take a couple of lessons on riding such a motorcycle.

This type of transport is fundamentally different from its two-wheeled counterpart. Because of the stroller on one side, it takes up much more space on the road. And this requires a special habit.

Moped and scooter licenses

The emergence of the “M” category has made life easier for owners of scooters and mopeds. Having reached 16 years of age, complete training at a motorcycle school and freely ride lightweight vehicles.

If the driver has been trained for category “A”, then “M” is entered automatically. What gives you the right to drive a light scooter.

Driver requirements

  • The future driver must be healthy; the appropriate certificate is obtained before the start of the training course. It would be a shame to take a course at a motorcycle school and find yourself unfit for health.

When undergoing a medical examination, warn the medical commission about your desire to open the “M” category.

If you do not do this, the category will not appear in your rights. You will not be able to drive a moped.

  • Reaching a certain age – each category has age parameters;
  • Completion of training at a motorcycle school corresponding to the required category.

Obtaining rights: specifics

To obtain a motorcycle license, you do not have to take the traditional city exam for obtaining any other license. In the case of a motorcycle, traffic police inspectors are limited to checking theoretical knowledge of traffic rules. Testing of practical skills takes place in special training grounds and sites.

Until the newly minted motorcyclist passes the theoretical course, he will not be allowed to take practical tests. In case of failure, retaking the theory is allowed after 2 weeks.

Some schools refuse to enroll in motorcycle riding courses in the winter. This is due to the complexity of road conditions. It is difficult to teach an inexperienced driver all the subtleties of driving on slippery roads.

Documents of the future driver

Until the applicant submits a full package of documents, he simply will not be allowed to study.

  • Copy of the passport.
  • Certificate with a conclusion from the medical board.
  • 2 photos 3x4.
  • Statement.
  • A document confirming the fact of successful training in a motorcycle school.
  • Payment for payment of state duty.
  • Consent from parents - if the future motorcyclist is under 18 years of age.

Procedure for obtaining a driver's license

This procedure also has its own course of events.

  • Checking the authenticity of each piece of paper - rest assured, the chance with false documents will definitely not work here;
  • The applicant for a license receives access to testing;
  • The first stage of exams is theory;
  • The second stage is practice at a special training ground;
  • Obtaining a driver's license.

Passing exams: step by step

The exam is divided into two independent blocks: theoretical and practical. The first involves testing the theoretical framework and rules. The second is aimed at identifying practical skills and abilities.

The theoretical part is taken entirely computer-based. During the test for knowledge of traffic rules, the test taker answers 20 questions. Ideally, the number of errors is zero.

20 minutes of time are allotted for the test - one minute per question. If one mistake is made, another 5 minutes are added to the time. During these minutes you need to answer an additional 5 questions from the block where the mistake was made.

If you make mistakes on 2 questions, 10 minutes and 10 questions are added to the time. If you miss 3 questions, the examinee is sent to retake.

The practical side of the exam takes place in the fresh air - at the training ground. Here everything is like at school, for a mistake - a minus to the final mark. It is enough to score 4 penalty points to be considered for a retake.

Minus 1 point for:

  • a warning signal not given by hand about planned braking;
  • late braking before the stop line;
  • low beam lights not turned on.

What type of motorcycle does not require a driver's license in 2021?

According to the legislation of the Russian Federation, a driver's license in 2021 is not required only for motocross motorcycles. This rule only works if a person does motocross on it and does not use it for driving on public roads.

Thus, the law requires that the owner of this vehicle must move motocross to special tracks using special equipment. This type of motorcycle is considered a sports motorcycle, for this reason it does not require registration measures.

If a person went onto the road on a motorcycle without a license, then if stopped by a traffic police officer, he will be issued a fine in the amount of 5-15 thousand rubles, followed by the evacuation of the vehicle to a special parking lot. The law states that if the motorcycle belongs to another person, the fine will be up to 30 thousand rubles.
