Desert Raven Nevada 350i: photos, reviews, technical specifications

Every novice motorcyclist is tormented by the question of what to buy: A new but Chinese or a well-worn Japanese bike, because when you buy something new, you expect that the breakdowns will not be serious and the investment will be large.
This is especially true for people with a small budget. This writing may help a first-season rider to consciously approach the choice of his first horse using my example of using the Desert Raven Nevada 250I.

It should be noted that I had experience with Chinese motorcycles and it was on the basis of this that the requirements for my real, personal conic were formed:

  • no vibration
  • no investments during the season (except for little things without which you can’t go anywhere)
  • the bike had to be able to maintain a speed of 120 mph to be comfortable in traffic.
  • price around 100(+-10) thousand rubles
  • and most importantly, the bike had to be Japanese

Harsh reality slapped me in the face and severely kicked me in the groin area - the only thing that was in my city and met all my requirements was either in terrible condition or in terrible condition and for inadequate money (for example, a 1988 Honda for 140 rubles), so it was decided to sacrifice your wishes and choose from what you have enough for - and there was only enough for him, accidentally seen in one of the stores:

What I fell for:

  • Injector - which somehow hinted at the absence of sexual relations with the carburetor and all sorts of leaks
  • Two cylinders and balancer shaft - no vibration
  • Water cooling - gave hope for trouble-free operation in traffic jams and heat
  • Decent appearance for a Chinese
  • Visually, the quality of welds and assembly in general is not bad for a Chinese product.

In general, I bought it. The amount of happiness bubbling inside me cannot be described in words. The smile stretched the face indecently, but it did not last long. Literally from the first kilometers of the journey problems began.

At a gentle mileage of 300 km, the second gear began to fall out. EPRST — I thought and drove for some time simply by adjusting the moment of switching to 3rd.

At 500 km, I was hesitant to go on a 300-kilometer mini-long trip. I left in the morning and literally after 20 km the light came on, indicating that the fan on the radiator was turned on. Well, the engine can’t overheat at the temperature at which I freeze—I thought, and calling the temperature sensor faulty, I continued on my way. After 50 km, the stop for attaching the cable broke off on the gas handle. from that moment on, I controlled the throttle with my index finger)) After 120 km, stopping for a smoke break, I almost turned gray. The motorcycle was enveloped in smoke with a specific oil smell. A quick inspection showed that the oil came from the breather, glass onto the exhaust pipes where it began to fry and coated the rear wheel.

-exhaust pipes running under the bike—the rubber literally oozed oil if you pressed it with your finger.

Panic, curses in the direction of China, throwing mud at oneself for such an amazing choice took 30 minutes and, with nowhere to go, moved on. Before reaching the finish line 30 km, something began to cool my left leg. Strange, I thought. Nothing strange, thought the antifreeze, getting out of the expansion tank and coming out through the hole in the filler neck. At the end of my trip, the inspection also revealed oil leaks from under the left engine cover where there could be no oil because there is a generator there.

After reading a ton of information on the Internet, acquiring acquaintances with the same motorcycles, improvements began that lasted until I was delivered from this brainchild of Satan.

It turned out that the engine is a copy of the Honda rebel250, but the Chinese would not be Chinese if, in the process of copying, they had not introduced something of their own into the design, such as breakdowns. The cylinders have undergone changes - now they are water-cooled with the old, “air” thermal gaps (only the compression ratio has been slightly increased). Consequently, the motorcycle tolerates overheating with a bang (or almost with a bang).

The cylinders have undergone changes - now they are water-cooled with the old, “air” thermal gaps (only the compression ratio has been slightly increased). Consequently, the motorcycle tolerates overheating with a bang (or almost with a bang).

The valve cover has also changed, due to poor design and terrible quality of execution, the labyrinth of crankcase ventilation spits out drops of oil along with the gases. The fight against this phenomenon ended with the installation of an expansion tank, the contents of which pour back into the engine after 100 km)) and the culprit for the oil leak from under the left engine cover was the neutral sensor gasket.

The offset of the second gear was cured by increasing the groove for the roller on the star for fixing the copy shaft.

With overheating, things are more complicated. The problem is in the radiator, or more precisely in its location. The Chinese fit it into a duplex frame vertically, and not horizontally as all normal Hondas do, as a result of which the air flow cut off by the wing blows on anything but the radiator. Everything can be solved by overcooking or buying a new radiator and installing it in the right place.

In fairness, I would like to note the advantages: Excellent brakes for this class with reinforced hoses; Low consumption both in the city and outside. Non-slippery, comfortably molded seat (subjective).

The distributed injection system from Delphi does not force the brain at all, and with regards to its wiring and elements, everything is also cool. waterproof terminals and the overall quality of the injectors/sensors are up to par. By the way, the throttle position sensor is from a Lanos, the idle air valve is from a Niva, and the fine filter on the fuel pump is the same as on a Zhiguli)

During the entire time I owned the motorcycle, I traveled more than 10,000 km. Maintenance costs amounted to 5,000 rubles, the lion's share of which was due to overcooking the radiator. All other negative aspects were corrected with our own hands and did not cause any discomfort.

Motorcyclist

After suffering for a month, it was decided to change the horse to a lighter and more suitable one. Because after the first fall, a fear of driving appeared and I was ready to give up and give up these attempts to master two wheels.

“But there is no money, and we are living people,” as Noggano says in the song. Therefore, having traded in a heavy horse, we went to choose from what we could afford to trade in. But the choice was small and consisted mainly of Chinese motorcycles.

I didn’t initially consider a Chinese motorcycle. Firstly, the image is the contemptuous attitude towards them on the part of all my friends, plus my own experience when, while studying in Minsk, China, the rear brake did not work. But it was decided to put an end to pride and ride until the end of the season on what would be convenient and affordable. Even if it's China.

The choice of Chinese in Russia is now huge. Initially, no Lifans were considered, their name alone would cause goosebumps. They simply persuaded me to sit on different models of the Confucian motorcycle industry in order to at least understand what size motorcycle I needed in order to move comfortably, brake and steer.

Having tried on several more powerful choppers and not finding anything I liked, I accidentally noticed this miracle in the corner. Small and quite nice-looking (there’s no denying that the Chinese are very nice looking creatures while the engine is silent), the Arizona 250 looked attractive in my case with its toy-like visual lightness. And when my butt sat on his seat and seemed to drown in marshmallows, it was so soft and comfortable, I changed my anger from “why do you need a Chinese moto” to “but you can look at this one.”

The advantages of standing in the cabin were immediately visible. Comfortable low seating position, smartly welded footrests and feet, a soft comfortable seat and a fork like a bicycle (which later came in handy more than once). The arches are in stock, which the previous motorcycle, crippled by my inability, lacked so much. And it was easy. Plastic and light, it felt like you could pick it up with one hand. After riding a 300-kilogram motorcycle, this factor became one of the most important for me - I picked it up, dusted it off and rode on.

Well, and the landing is like a chopper. I had a naked, I had a classic, but I didn’t have a chopper yet, and it was interesting to try what it was like to ride feet first.

When I picked up the Desert Eagle from the salon, to be honest, I had no illusions. Even a pole might stand beautifully, but riding a Chinese meant chaos and destruction, first of all, of himself. And this is what came out of it.

If you like to ride, first assemble it yourself

There were four disgusting things about this motorcycle: the handles, the reserve tap, the side stand and the sound.

Well, the general feeling of fragility and fragility cannot be avoided. Everything is light, the plastic is as thin as blotting paper. The gearbox crunches pitifully when shifting and seems about to throw off its paw. While driving, if you turn more than 5 thousand revolutions, it starts to rattle at the back somewhere in the area of the wing, and I have never found the source of this “squealing for a reason.”

Here's a new twist. More precisely - old

I have one turn in front of the house, almost a turn cursed by me. So sharp, plus with a pedestrian crossing and a bunch of cars right around the bend. I couldn’t fit into it cleanly on any of my motorcycles, and this lowered my morale and in every possible way insulted the inner Valentino Rossi in me.

And I thought: if I don’t fit into this entrance to Valhalla in Chinese, then I’ll definitely give up the idea with motorcycles, and it’s so clear that it’s not a given, but here it won’t be given squared.

Why am I saying this? Moreover, this moped steers easily and naturally. I made the turn the first time without experiencing any problems. During the week of driving the Chinese, several fears fell away on their own.

Fear of the road and cars nearby. There is no shame in driving a Chinese car at the speed with which you control everything, well, what a show-off there is. You go 40 and go, well, 60, thanks to its lightness it is very easy to maneuver. When turning, you don't feel its weight and you're not afraid to lean it to the best of your ability. At the same time, the cars see you, and if they suddenly don’t see you, the horn is so vile that even the deaf will hear it. It's not scary, that's all. Although all my friends are very afraid to sit on it.

Fear of not being able to control the car and flying into oncoming traffic, for example (this has happened before). You realize that you control him. It is so small that you can easily drive between cars without fear of hitting it. The landing is low, the weight is light - you stop, press your butt to the road, put your feet up - and you are the king of the asphalt. At the same time, if you need to speed up and pass a flashing green traffic light, his agility is quite enough.

Fear of braking. It brakes well and clearly. Again, weight plays a role.

Specifications

The engine of the motorcycle was unusual.

Having copied it from the Japanese, the Chinese redesigned the cooling system. Moreover, if the Japanese motorcycle with this engine belonged to the class of air-cooled machines, the Nevada has... liquid cooling . In an effort to save on everything they could, the Chinese did not change anything else in the settings,

The result was a hybrid designed for air cooling (compression ratio), but at the same time running on a liquid version.

However, the bike still has an air filter, but more about it below. The resulting hybrid turned out to be very interesting.

Mechanics note: gasoline is not lower than AI-92 .

Transmission and clutch

The motorcycle is equipped with a 5-speed gearbox . With the exception of the problem with the second gear, which slips during dynamic driving, it has no other problems. The issue is resolved by a faster transition to the third.

  • Clutch - standard, multi-disc , oil bath, power transmission - cable .
  • The main drive is chain .

Brakes

The braking system of the bike might be the envy of some Japanese. Hydraulic drive, discs on both axles.

Front: brakes:

  • number of disks - 2;
  • diameter - 260 mm;
  • support - 2-piston .

Rear brakes:

  • number of disks - 1;
  • diameter - 240 mm;
  • support - 2-piston.

Flaws

The most common problems are leaking here, dripping here. The photo shows oil leaking from the breather onto the exhaust pipes.

In addition to the valve covers, which can be treated either by replacing or additionally installing an expansion tank with oil being thrown back into the engine (mechanics have a detailed diagram of the device), users noted the following:

  • The air radiator, although taken from a Honda, was installed extremely poorly . There is not enough flow from the front wheel to it, as a result of which the fan constantly works (signaling overheating to the panel). be treated with a grinder and overcooking it to a more favorable place.
    The radiator of the cooling system has an elongated shape and is squeezed between the frame tubes.
  • Antifreeze tends to leak out of the inlet . There are opinions that you need to use another one, which expands less when heated.
  • Second gear. Either go to third in advance or use a file to make the groove of this gear in the gearbox comb deeper.
  • Weak generator - sometimes the bike itself is not enough, and you can forget about external consumers . It can only be treated by replacement.

If we tackle the previous problem, many recommend immediately changing all the optics to LED , as well as installing a more powerful headlight.

and dignity

Already in stock, the motorcycle comes with a trunk attached to the double seat and somewhat obscuring the visibility of the rear light.

Despite such an impressive list of disadvantages, the bike also has advantages. These include:

  • comfortable fit and saddle (classic);
  • low consumption (according to users - up to 500 km on 1 tank);
  • price - China;
  • high-quality assembly (despite the fact that it is China);
  • injector from Delphi (one or leaders in the production of components for cars and motorcycles);

    All wiring is done with dignity, equipped with very high-quality waterproof terminals.

  • reinforced brake hoses.

One of the distinguishing features is the stock roll bars , which are prescribed in the PTS, which can “upset” patrol inspectors.

Driving performance,

The Desert Raven Nevada 350i model has a decent appearance for a Chinese.

There are various rumors about the maximum speed of the model. From 105 km/h to 160 km/h . The official documentation supplied with the striker gives a figure of 147 km/h. But users note that it is possible to accelerate it to such a speed, but it is the same as making a tortoise run at the speed of a hare. The optimal cruiser for a country route is 105 km.

Acceleration to hundreds

  • Acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h - 12 seconds .
  • From standstill to 60 km/h (traffic police limit for the city) - 5.5 seconds .

According to users, 80 km/h well, confidently, in about 6-6.5 seconds . Further, extremely reluctantly, as if there were restrictions.

Fuel consumption

Fuel consumption is 3 liters on a country road, up to 5 liters during city driving. Depends on the quality of the road and the capabilities of the pilot.

Dimensions and weight

The dimensions and weight of the Chinese bike correspond to the road class of motorcycles.

  • The curb weight of the bike, with all fluids filled, is 174 kg .
  • Dry - 150 kg .

The motorcycle belongs to the road class, so its dimensions differ slightly from its “brothers”:

  • length - 2,181 mm;
  • width - 801 mm;
  • in height - 1,091 mm;
  • seat height - 710 mm;
  • wheelbase - 1,510 mm;
  • ground clearance - 130 mm.

For whom is it intended?

The rather low seating position will appeal to short bikers, but according to reviews, people whose height is approximately 170–175 cm .

The Desert Raven Nevada 350i is a budget road motorcycle, optimally suited as a first bike for city trips and short distance trips.

Modifications and competitors

The described motorcycle has no modifications, however, the entire Desert Raven line can be considered as separate variations of the same bike.

At the same time, the developers of this brand have surpassed all previously known ones. The love of the Chinese to copy the successful developments of other manufacturers (in particular the Japanese) is already legendary. But Desert Raven Nevada has received so many copies... In addition to the hybrid engine, it has:

  • throttle position sensor from Daewoo Lanos ;
  • idle valve - Niva 4x4 ;
  • fine filter - Vaz Lada 2107 ;

and in addition - an air vent from the original Honda Rebel 250 .

Almost any road bike from manufacturers from the Middle Kingdom can be considered a competitor to the bike, but the most striking of them will be the same Desert Raven, but a modification of the Arizona.

Nevada's direct competitor is the Desert Raven Arizona 350i chopper.

The main difference between motorcycles is class . If Nevada belongs to the classic road bikes (or naked bikes ), then its competitor is a chopper , with all that it implies. Comfortable seating with legs extended forward, part of the instruments on the tank, stock backrests for numbers 1 and 2, etc.

Features of the Desert Raven Nevada 350i

After the bike picked up components from everyone (including Russian developers), it would seem unnecessary to talk about the features, but the Chinese decided otherwise.

Rear shock absorber.

Round headlight.

Rear lighting.

Front fender.

So:

  • two springs on the rear shock absorber;
  • upside-down fork;
  • hydraulic support;
  • reinforced stock chain 520;
  • reinforced brake line hoses are already in stock (latest editions);
  • not a very good valve cover - as a result of which the bike spits drops of oil from the exhaust (like the 2T);
  • electronic tachometer.

In addition, the cooling system is somewhat non-standard ; while driving you need to constantly keep the readings in your field of view (fortunately, they guessed to put the temperature sensor on the dashboard).
