Motorcycle T500 I Cobra (1968): technical characteristics, photos, videos

Cobra Crossfire 125 is a lightweight small-cc road motorcycle made in China and Izhevsk. This low budget 125cc classic motorcycle see created for driving on ordinary roads. Its appearance and driving characteristics are reminiscent of the famous brothers of the “land of the rising sun”.

The Cobra Crossfire 125cc is powered by a 125cc single cylinder 4-stroke CXM125B engine. For ease of operation and reducing the load on the engine, a 5-speed gearbox is installed. Front disc and rear drum brakes provide smooth and safe braking.

Like most modern motorcycles, the bike comes from the factory with alloy wheels and good tires. The main component of the motorcycle's power system is the carburetor, which greatly simplifies various repairs of problems related to the fuel supply. The relatively small weight of only 100 kg makes it easy to maneuver the bike within the city.

If you compare this motorcycle with competitors in its class (for example, ABM Phantom 125), you can immediately notice several advantages:

  • The dynamics of acceleration and maximum speed due to the 5-speed gearbox are impressive.
  • Improved optics and the presence of a fairing in the front part.
  • High capacity battery.
  • Less fuel consumption. For the ABM Phantom 125, for example, the figure exceeds 3 liters per hundred.
  • The overall design and coloring, as well as the “raised” exhaust system, resembles more a motorcycle with a sporty character than an ordinary “road car”.
  • The cost of replacing spare parts (spare parts for the Cobra Crossfire are slightly cheaper than for similar bikes in this class).

Photo of Cobra Crossfire 125cc

This motorcycle is perfect for people who value, above all, comfort and a quiet ride. If you decide to conquer forest roads or impassable areas on this motorcycle, then you will be disappointed, since the bike’s ground clearance is only 125 mm. This value is sufficient for driving through small sections of rough terrain, but you shouldn’t count on anything more.

The motorcycle is great for riding around the city or on country roads. The maximum rated speed of 90 km/h is slightly underestimated, but in reality, the device can be accelerated to 110 km/h. The operation of the front telescopic and rear pendulum suspension deserves separate consideration. When driving over small potholes and uneven roads, the motorcycle seems to “float”, the suspension adequately handles all the bumps and potholes. The double rear shock absorber plays an important role in this. Controlling the motorcycle is easy and does not require much effort.

The ability to choose two color options (black-red and blue-white), as well as the presence of an electric starter, alarm, and side mirrors, makes this classic motorcycle stand out among similar Chinese-made devices.

The disadvantages include slight vibration at certain speeds (4000-6000 rpm), but most models of Chinese low-budget motorcycles have this drawback.

Model history

Chinese manufacturers have set themselves the goal of creating the cheapest possible analogue of the Yamaha YBR 125 and Yamaha Serow 250 cc. In general, they coped with their task, since the Cobra crossfire repeats its prototype in terms of technical parameters. By using inexpensive plastic and simplifying the design, the price was reduced by almost 4 times.

The model is very popular in Asian countries. The motorcycle is still one of the top five most sold not only in China, but also in India, Taiwan, and Korea. In Russia and Ukraine, Cobra is also considered popular. True, unlike Asian countries, it is not used for daily purposes (commuting to work, cargo transportation, etc.), but for learning to drive or entertaining teenagers who cannot yet afford more powerful equipment.

Advantages

  • Ideal for beginners who are just learning to ride motorcycles
  • Well suited for driving on smooth asphalt roads.
  • Features fast acceleration.
  • It has low fuel consumption, the tank holds 10 liters (although the passport says 8.5 liters).

Another plus is how much the Cobra motorcycle costs (it can be bought for 42,000-55,000 rubles - the price depends on the modification). Repairing the engine, transmission, wiring and any other part of the motorcycle is inexpensive (all spare parts are simple and inexpensive).

Flaws

  • The ground clearance of the bike is only 125 mm.
  • The motorcycle is not suitable for off-road riding.
  • Thin stock tires slip when cornering.
  • Not very reliable Chinese plastic, cracks easily and does not withstand collisions.
  • Electrical equipment quickly breaks down (Cobra owners often complain that they often have to change the voltage regulator).
  • The Cobra is very lightweight, so the pilot will feel side gusts of wind.
  • It is difficult to find original spare parts (it helps that parts from many other motorcycles are suitable for the Cobra).
  • Vibration is felt at 4000-6000 rpm (especially when releasing the gas).

Design

The motorcycle has a fairly simple appearance. Many call its design outdated, but let's be honest - for such a price the appearance is very decent, analogues in its price category look much more primitive (compare, for example, Cobra with Ural or Voskhod 2M - the first definitely looks more solid and sporty).

The steering wheel is comfortable and provides a low seating position for the pilot. The seat is quite rigid, the driver does not fall through it. The instrument panel is wide, all meters are clearly visible even when driving at speed. It is possible to connect any other “gadgets” to the electrical network at your discretion.

The coloring of the motorcycle is dynamic and masculine. There are several options to choose from - aggressive black and red, calmer blue and white, classic white and black or stylish black and blue.

Specifications

Engine

All users note the quick start of the engine. It starts easily even in winter at temperatures down to -15 degrees, which is very important for the climate of our country. The only thing worth taking into account is the vibration of the engine at rpm above 4500 - they are especially noticeable at the moment of releasing the gas. The resulting shaking reduces ride comfort, but in general is not critical and does not interfere with control.

The car consumes fuel moderately. Average consumption when driving on a flat road is 2.5 liters per 100 km, so the Cobra is quite suitable for a relaxing motorcycle trip around Russia or Ukraine.

Brake system

The motorcycle has front disc brakes (dimensions of each disc: 240 x 50 x 4). The standard pads are FALCON SPEEDFIRE (250 cm3). Rear drum brake with 130 x 30 mm pads. The rim has 4 holes and a diameter of 18″.

U.J.M. Suzuki T500 Cobra.

Suzuki has always stood out among other Japanese motorcycle manufacturers with its very extreme vehicles. Just remember the Hayabusa or the Suzuki GSX-R 750. You could say it’s Suzuki’s tradition to produce motorcycles that produce adrenaline in huge quantities. When Michio Suzuki began to master the production of motorcycles instead of looms in 1952, he quickly realized that all niches in the Japanese motor market were practically occupied. It was relatively free in the segment of sports motorcycles. Honda was not yet interested in this niche; other Japanese manufacturers were also poorly represented there. It was in this segment that Suzuki concentrated its efforts and very quickly achieved success in it. But success in the Japanese market is one thing, and success in the world market is completely different. Suzuki clearly didn’t have enough strength for the world market yet. The company produced motorcycles mainly with two-stroke engines; at that time it was impossible to make a budget sportbike otherwise; in order to achieve great power from four-stroke engines, very expensive technologies were required.

To overcome the technological gap, Suzuki managers made a cunning move. They lured racer and designer Ernst Resner away from MZ. In the fifties, this company from the GDR was a leader in the production of motorcycles with two-stroke engines. MZ motorcycles have won motorcycle Grand Prix more than once. Rosner overturned the engine of his motorcycle in one of the races, which led to a derailment and quietly fled to the West, or, as they said then, he chose freedom. Some drawings leaked along with Rosner. And in the sixties, Suzuki began selling T-series motorcycles. The engines of these motorcycles were suspiciously reminiscent of the engines of MZ motorcycles.

Part 1 After we had lunch, my friend went home to Chelyabinsk, and I decided to go to Ufa straight through the Ural mountains; I really wanted to see what it was like in the mountains)) I really enjoyed driving along the mountain road, good asphalt and excellent views. But it was difficult for the Chinese 150 cc motorcycle to climb to the top when loaded, and over time the traction began to disappear and I was afraid to stop in the middle of a mountain road far from populated areas to take photographs, because I was not sure that the motorcycle, after stopping, would be able to start moving again and continue on its way. After the mountains ended, the craving for a motorcycle returned and I started looking for a place to stay for the night. I decided to spend the night 60 km from Ufa in a forest near the road. I didn’t have a tent and I’d never spent the night in the forest before. It was a little scary, but there was really nowhere to go since it was far from home. I had a camping tent and a cheap Chinese sleeping bag with me. After I found a good place to stay for the night, I lit a fire, had dinner, drank hot tea and went to rest in my makeshift tent. In place of the tent, I pulled an awning with the help of stones and a motorcycle so that I had a place protected from dampness and possible rain, this gave the feeling of a roof over my head. I didn’t use the Chinese sleeping bag as a sleeping bag; instead, I unzipped it and covered my head with it like a blanket, since there were a lot of mosquitoes under the awning.

Day four I slept very well under the tent, warm and comfortable. In the morning I lit a fire again, had breakfast with a can of stew, drank hot coffee and headed to Ufa. The gasket that I installed (in Sibay) between the knee and the cylinder completely collapsed due to vibration while I was overcoming a mountain road and because of this the motorcycle made an unpleasant sound, and the exhaust pipe dangled very much. In Ufa, I stopped at the nearest car service center. At first they said that they didn’t have time to work on the motorcycle right now and that all the mechanics were busy, but then when they saw that the motorcycle was loaded with bags of things and that it had a license plate from another region, the mechanic abandoned the car he was working on and took on my motorcycle. It took about 20 minutes to repair the motorcycle. Instead of a gasket, the mechanic found a thick copper ring; of course, exhaust gases escaped a little from under it, but this no longer interfered with driving, and the exhaust pipe sat rigidly without dangling. After the repair I went to Asha. In the vicinity of Asha there are a lot of caves and incomparable mountain landscapes. One of the largest caves near Asha is “Kiselevskaya”; I headed there and the entrance to the cave turned out to be not very large. But when I went down into it, I discovered that it was a huge cave with a bunch of all sorts of passages and halls in the cave, it was cool, damp and a little scary since I had never been in caves before))). I decided to spend the night on the banks of the Sim River using the same tent and sleeping bag with a rug.

Day five Next on the route I had the Ignatievskaya Cave, which is located near the city of Katav-Ivanovsk. Not far from the cave there was a resting place. The table turned out to be quite large, and I decided to take a nap on it for an hour)) Having rested a little, I went in search of the entrance to the cave and soon saw a huge hole in the rock and began to look for the descent to it. I also discovered that this huge cave is not the only one here.

Ignatievskaya cave turned out to be dry and not scary. I’m not posting photos inside the caves themselves because my camera works disgustingly in complete darkness. The picture shows just the entrance to the cave; the cave itself is quite large and has several large halls and all sorts of corridors. After Ignatievskaya Cave, I headed to a city called Satka. By the time I got to Satka, it had already gotten dark and there was nothing to see, not finding a good place to stay for the night, I drove into the first exit from the road I came across, threw the rug, pulled up the awning and went to bed, this time I didn’t stop at the store in advance and I have nothing for dinner there wasn’t =((The forest was pine and there were pine needles lying everywhere, it was damp and cold, in general it was not comfortable to sleep and I woke up a couple of times at night, looked at the clock, realized that it was still deep at night and forced myself to fall asleep again.

Day six When I woke up once again and found that it was already dawn, I was delighted and went into the city in search of a grocery store and food)) Having bought buns, short bread and canned goods, I turned into the nearest forest, lit a fire and rested from a hard night))) After breakfast I noticed that my chain had grown, I tightened it, lubricated it and went to the next point on the route - it was a dam and an electrometallurgical plant built with it. These buildings are more than 100 years old and now they are used only for excursions, unfortunately, the factory workshops themselves are closed and you can’t go into them (((The dam was the last point on my route, and the next stop was my house))) It was a little distance from home more than 200 km and I covered this distance almost without stopping and around 17:00 I was already sitting at home)))

Results In total, during the trip I traveled 2,000 km and the average speed did not exceed 80 km/h. In total, 2,176 rubles were spent on the trip (gasoline 2,176 rubles, food 1,500 rubles, other 650 rubles)

Using the experience gained during this trip in the summer of 2021, I think I will still ride a motorcycle in Crimea))

How much does a Cobra Crossfire 125 motorcycle cost (new and used)?

Chinese manufacturers are quickly taking over the automobile and motorcycle markets in our country. The price of a new Cobra 125 motorcycle is 45-47 thousand rubles. For that amount you can barely buy a three-year-old “Japanese”. It is quite difficult to compete with such prices, which is why most stores currently selling motorcycles and scooters in Russia are almost completely filled with Chinese equipment.

Used (used) models can be found for 20-30 thousand rubles, it all depends on the condition of the bike.

The motorcycle with the bold name “Cobra Crossfire” is perfect for everyday trips both around the city and on country roads. Any girl can handle it. In its class, this motorcycle represents perhaps the best comparison of characteristics such as price and quality.

Maintenance of the Cobra Crossfire is inexpensive and, in the event of an unexpected breakdown, spare parts can always be found in the shortest possible time. Passport data is slightly underestimated, which is a definite plus.

Snake Charmer: 1968 Suzuki T500 Cobra

If you're looking for a summer project bike this one should be on your list. This is a 1968 Suzuki T500 Cobra and it's a worthy project if there ever was one. This one is an hour southwest of Ann Arbor, Michigan. It'll need some work as it's been in storage for the last five years but being a first-year T500 it's a worthy restoration project. Thanks to Jim S. for tracking this one down!

Suzuki had a game-changer on its hands with the Cobra. Released in 1968, the T500 Cobra was the biggest-displacement two-stroke twin-cylinder engine since pre-war England's Scott bikes that were also water-cooled. Big two-stroke bikes were known to be hard to handle, overheat, and to use as much gas as a car would. And, in fact the '68s weren't too fuel efficient. The '69 T500 engine was modified to act like a four-stroke and to use much less gas, but a first-year bike is usually the one you want if you're a collector.

The owner says that the gas was drained before the bike was put into storage but they still think that the tank should be lined. They speculate that all it would need to run is to rebuild the carb, put in a new battery, clean the tank, and give it a tune up. They may be right. The paint is faded and you can see a couple of smooth dents, hopefully those can be massaged out. There are only 7,621 miles on this bike, that's not a lot of miles for a 2008 Suzuki let alone a 1968 Suzuki. You can plan on spending a few hundred dollars if you do the work yourself, or a few thousand if you farm it out. The seller makes a point of saying that this bike has its original baffles and exhausted, which is good; those might be tough to find.

This is a 46 hp twin and it looks great. If you do a little metal polishing you'll be in business, appearance-wise. Some of the chrome will need to be redone, or you could just get everything working perfectly, clean everything up as good as you can, and drive it as an all-original example. I could go either way on this one, I would love to have it restored to like new condition again. But, there's something about a great-running bike that looks like this; a little hazy and dull and used. I would probably change the rubber parts and cables and go through the fuel system and brakes and get things working reliably and just drive it as it looks now while I mulled over whether to restore it or not.

This bike is listed on eBay with five days left on the auction and the bid is just a bit over $600! If this thing goes for less than $2,000 it'll be painful to have let it go. Would you do with this Cobra, restore it to show bike condition or get it working and drive it as it looks now?

Have something to sell? List it here on Barn Finds!
