Troubleshooting electrical equipment ATV Stels 500 GT

Stels ATVs, like other all-terrain vehicles, have their own weak points, which, due to intense load, manifest themselves in both the engine and the chassis. But finding faults in the electrical equipment of an ATV is much more difficult, and this process is very labor-intensive. For example, let's take the Stels 500GT ATV. The electrical equipment of this ATV contains a very important unit that is responsible for charging the battery and stable operation of the electrical equipment on the ATV as a whole. As you may have guessed, we are talking about a voltage regulator relay. When this relay fails on a Stels 500GT ATV, not only the charging of the battery is turned off, but the relay itself becomes a kind of closing device in the electrical system, which leads to electrical wiring smoke: the connecting chips melt, and, as a result, you get a short circuit and a burnt out electrical wiring. How can you protect yourself from this?

The first signs of a breakdown of the relay-regulator on any ATV is the rapid drainage of the battery. The engine stalls and the instruments do not work. Checking whether the relay regulator is working is very simple. All you need is a voltmeter with the function of measuring DC voltage above 12 volts. We start the engine and connect the voltmeter to the battery terminals. With the ATV engine running, the voltage on the voltmeter should be approximately 13 -14 volts, depending on the degree of discharge of the battery. As charging progresses, the voltage at the terminals drops to 12.5 - 12.8 volts. If the ATV engine is running and when you press the throttle lever, the voltage is 12 volts and does not increase upward, then the relay regulator is faulty. In this case, you can remove the terminals from the battery and the engine will immediately stall, since there will be no spark if the generator or relay regulator is not working. Thus, if the first “bells” appear that the battery on the ATV is quickly running out, do not rush to blame its old age and run to the store and buy a new one. First, check whether your battery is being charged from the standard electrical network. Of course, if charging does not occur, then this is not only a problem with the relay regulator. Here the generator may not work. To check it, you need to disconnect the generator chip coming out of the engine wiring harness while the engine is running. We take the voltmeter again, but now switch it to the position for measuring alternating voltage. We take measurements between the phases of the generator. The voltage on the Stels 500GT ATV ​​generator should be 24-26 volts alternating current. If this is not the case, then first we disassemble the generator and determine its performance, after which we can deal with the relay regulator.

Repairing the electrical equipment of an ATV is a rather complex and time-consuming process, sometimes requiring the removal of all the casing from the all-terrain vehicle.
