Technical characteristics of IZH "Jupiter 5", a brief overview of the domestic motorcycle

How did the motorcycle turn out the way it is?

The metal is sanded and coated with clear acrylic varnish. Selected color combinations and everything glossy are still boring from fiddling with computer programs. I wanted something like the so-called post-apocalyptic industrial theme. Here, for example, from the Detroit Bros workshop:

In general, I decided to assemble the Jupiter without the side borders and so that it would all shine with the steel from which it is made.

I bought a kilogram package of car varnish, it turned out to be acrylic, from Vika (about 500 rubles). I also bought thinner for acrylic paints and varnishes, also from Vika (a couple of jars for 90 rubles each), but later the hardener ran out faster than the thinner (a small jar of hardener was included with a jar of varnish). It seems that the domestic solvent R-12 is friendly with any acrylic paints and varnishes, but I have not checked.

I planned to paint with a purchased touch-up airbrush from MATRIX - with a simple round nozzle, a 0.2-liter aluminum tank, designed specifically for regular paint (not for all sorts of filling primers, which require a large diameter nozzle, greater pressure and, accordingly, greater air flow), produces spot from 5 mm to 4-5 centimeters, economically consumes paint.

I bought this touch-up airbrush for 690 rubles. And for 200 rubles a filter drier is small for him, for another 50 rubles for a set of two flanges (for a thin oxygen hose) and two nuts for a bayonet connection of such a flange to the airbrush.

On occasion, I got the compressor quite inexpensively, homemade, from a compressor from a refrigerator, a small receiver, a pressure gauge on the receiver itself, and an oxygen reducer with a thin oxygen hose. I've already modified it a little:

And also modified:

Steampunk compressor:

Such a compressor will not handle spray guns with high air consumption, but my touch-up airbrush works, and a small airbrush will work even more so. Although you can try a small spray gun with an LVLP spray system (originally made to work at low pressure and air flow) from IWATA, for example (I saw it on the Internet for 2300 rubles). But the compressor works no louder than a refrigerator. Otherwise, I would buy a compressor from my next salary (this is approximately 5,000 - 7,000 rubles).

Technical characteristics of IZH "Jupiter 5", a brief overview of the domestic motorcycle

The popularity of motorcycles is ensured by their small overall dimensions, lower fuel consumption than a car, and most importantly, very high maneuverability. And if we take modern motorcycles, then another advantage is their high speed performance.

Of course, now the roads are driven mainly by motorcycles from foreign manufacturers belonging to different classes. But some 20 years ago, only domestic motorcycles were seen on the roads.

The leaders on our roads were IZH motorcycles, represented by two models “Jupiter” and “Planet”. The manufacturers ran these two models in parallel; they had significant similarities, but there was one significant difference – the engine. “Planet” was equipped with a single-cylinder power unit, while “Jupiter” was equipped with a two-cylinder one.

The presence of two cylinders provided not only more power than the Planet, but also easier engine starting, since this unit did not have a return compression blow to the winding stem. Perhaps the best model was the IZH Jupiter-5, which should be considered in more detail.

Reviews

Reviews of “Jupiter IZH-4” have both positive and negative. Some of the bike owners are confident that if you treat your equipment with care and carry out technical inspections and repairs in a timely manner, the results will not take long to arrive. When purchasing a motorcycle, you can have virtually zero knowledge regarding repair and operation. The main thing is that the Jupiter IZH-4 was purchased either in good condition or was completely renovated. Then many problems and “diseases” of the motorcycle will not bother the driver.

Other owners of this motorcycle consider high engine power and excellent acceleration performance to be positive aspects. If you make a few changes to the design, IZH Jupiter-4 can easily take on a modern, attractive look.

Complaints mainly concern unstable voltage regulator relays, problems with the ignition system and rapid wear of engine elements.

Design

The design of this bike was typically Soviet, in the best traditions of the domestic school of motorcycle building - a bulging round headlight, a flat seat, shock absorbers a la “candle”... But the gas tank visually raised up on the frame, the muffler pipes that went around the engine and shiny chrome wheels looked very good , like all of Planet 5 as a whole. The overall impression of the appearance of the motorcycle was somewhat spoiled by the cheap-looking turn signals and the pipes themselves, which, unlike the mufflers, for some reason they decided not to chrome, but simply paint them. Well, okay, in the USSR motorcycles were valued not for their external gloss, but for what they were capable of, and IZH is doing well with this.

Design and reliability

IZH Planet 2, as evidenced by the number in the model name, became the second motorcycle in the Izhevsk Planet series.

It differs from the “ancestor” of the family in greater comfort and power of the power unit, as well as an updated, more modern (for that period of time) design.

Thus, Planet 2 received a signature paint job, a muffler and wheel rims covered with decorative chrome, a polished crankcase cover, as well as brake covers and a carburetor casing with a layer of hammer enamel.

The motorcycle seat has become wider and more comfortable. Its finishing is made of colored textinite.

The second generation model is designed in such a way that its repair does not require special or specific tools, conditions or equipment.

The mechanics are quite simple and straightforward, and spare parts are produced in abundance.

IZh Planet 2 owes its excellent cross-country characteristics to good traction at low speeds, high suspension and competent gearbox design.

Among other things, the owners of the bike unanimously declare the highest reliability of the engine and its amazing durability. This is confirmed by the manufacturer, who provided a warranty for a mileage of 15 thousand kilometers or a year and a half of operation.

Technical characteristics of Izh Jupiter 5

In general, the characteristics of the Izh Jupiter 5 motorcycle corresponded to its time. But in the 2000s, when it continued to be produced, it could no longer compete with imported models. The Chinese had already flooded the market with budget, but still more modern models, and a flood of used motorcycles poured from Japan, Europe and the USA. The characteristics of the Izh Yu5 engine were not bad, but everything else was hopelessly outdated a couple of decades ago.

Engine

The technical characteristics of the engine are not amazing - two cylinders, 347 cubic meters. There is enough horsepower, as much as 24, torque - 34 Nm. Compared to the previous generation, the engine lost 4 hp, but gained torque, and there was also noticeably more thrust at the bottom, so in general the characteristics of the Izh Jupiter 5 became more balanced. But the engine remained two-stroke, and the gas tank must be filled with oil mixed with gasoline in a ratio of 1 to 25. But it can easily digest even AI-76, not to mention AI-80. The declared maximum speed is 125 km/h, and it can be achieved on Jupiter without a stroller. And if you look at the engine in cross-section, it turns out that it subtly resembles all the engines at once that were ever produced at the Izhevsk Motor Plant.

Transmission

Standard 4-speed transmission, where first gear is downshifted and all others are upshifted. It has never been reliable, but thanks to its high maintainability and availability of spare parts, Soviet motorcyclists quickly learned how to solve problems on their own. Some garage craftsmen even completely rebuilt the transmission, adding a fifth gear to the bike, but these were custom ones.

Chassis and brakes

The chassis was developed back in the 70s, if not earlier, and in Jupiter 5 it has remained virtually unchanged. A conventional steel frame with a telescopic fork in front and ancient shock absorbers a la “candle” in the rear, plus drum brakes on both wheels. The effectiveness of the suspension and braking system was mediocre even for its time, but they also had a significant advantage - endurance and maintainability. On modern motorcycles (except perhaps enduro), oil from the fork quickly begins to leak on rural dirt roads, and Izh Yu5, it seems, can ride without it at all. But we still do not recommend testing this in practice.

Electronics

The fifth generation Jupiter does not have the same electrical problems that the fourth had. In fact, this model is the same Jupiter 4, but with a number of corrected shortcomings, such as regular wiring problems. Gasoline consumption has also become lower thanks to a redesigned ignition. In general, the electrical circuit has changed slightly, but the weak points that regularly served as a source of headaches for owners have been removed.

Weight and dimensions

The dimensions of the bike can be called average, as well as its weight. How much does Izh Jupiter 5 weigh? By modern standards - quite a lot, about 160 kg, and this is only dry weight. But the motorcycle engine is located low, so the center of gravity is also shifted down. The relatively large weight is due to the fact that in the USSR they did not skimp on hardware, and plastic elements were practically not used. If something can be made from iron, it must be made from iron! That is why the weight of the Izh Jupiter 5 engine is about a quarter of its total mass, if we consider the specimen without a sidecar.

Controllability

This mastodon handles mediocrely, not least because of the ancient design, and with a stroller the handling becomes even worse. But the cradles for Izh Jupiter 5 were also produced separately, so if you don’t need it, you can always disconnect it. But don't forget about the weak brakes, which are not enough to effectively stop a massive bike. On the other hand, the Izh stroller is good because you can load a lot of spare parts and other goods into it when going on a long trip, since its volume allows this.

Fuel consumption

Compared to the previous generation, gasoline consumption has noticeably decreased, from 7-8 liters to 5.5-6. The stated figures are about 5.9 liters at an average speed of 90 km/h. The quality of gasoline does not matter; the carburetor calmly consumes everything that burns. Tank volume - 18 liters.

Disadvantages and childhood diseases

The car is not without its drawbacks, for which many people do not like it. Most of them manifest themselves as a result of improper operation or overheating of the engine in difficult road conditions. The most annoying are the following disadvantages:

  • Rapid wear of parts of the cylinder-piston group and crankshafts.
  • Low resource of chain drive parts.
  • Uneven operation of the cylinders.
  • Poor quality connectors of electrical equipment wires.
  • Imperfect, archaic design of attaching the saddle to the frame.

Wear of the main engine parts causes the most problems for motorcycle owners. Even correct and careful operation is accompanied by early wear of pistons, cylinders, and crankshaft parts. With a new engine, after running 15-20 thousand km, extraneous metallic sounds appear, which intensify over time. They can be caused by one or more reasons:

  1. Wear of the connecting rod upper head bushing.
  2. Cylinder wear.
  3. Wear of the piston skirt.
  4. The lock falls out of the piston ring groove and is broken.
  5. Destruction of the connecting rod needle bearing on the crankshaft.

These defects can only be eliminated by replacing parts of the next repair size, boring the cylinders and bushings. All of this work, except for replacing the crankshafts, can be performed without removing the engine.

Poor quality chains or inattention to the condition of the rubber covers lead to rapid wear of the drive. At the same time, the drive sprocket wears out just as quickly and must be replaced along with the chain. The rear gear lasts longer and can survive 3 or even 4 chains.

It’s rare that an engine is characterized by perfect uniformity of cylinder operation. The primitive mechanism for adjusting the distribution of fuel mixture flows across the cylinders does not allow precise adjustment of the supply. As a result, each cylinder produces its own torque. Although the difference is not great, the load on the crank system is not uniform and balanced. As a result, it works with a skew in the values of the force vectors; the more loaded crankshaft quickly fails. The presence of unevenness can be easily detected by the color of candle soot. The color of the carbon deposits on the spark plugs should be the same; if there is a significant difference, then this primarily indicates uneven operation of the cylinders. It can be adjusted, but the regular process is poorly managed and laborious.

Electrical wiring is made with low quality wires and connectors. Cases of contact oxidation or wire breakage as a result of vibration of a loose connection are a widespread phenomenon.

The design of fastening the saddle to the frame has not changed since the appearance of the first IZhs of a similar arrangement in the early 60s. After a short period of use, the lock becomes loose due to vibration, and unpleasant play appears in the joints. Under the saddle there are connectors from the wires going to the optics of the rear flap and to the side trailer. Many owners, forgetting about this, simply tear the wires under the saddle when removing it. The rear wheel cannot be removed without removing the seat.

Izh Jupiter-5 is the best Soviet motorcycle in a number of parameters

Soviet motorcycles will soon remain only in legends, unless the Urals will continue to have their sidecars, which cost like a budget car. But the company that produces Ural motorcycles has been exporting for a long time, most of the motorcycles go to the USA, and the motorcycles themselves are partially assembled from imported components, where at least 30 percent of the components are imported.

But now quite a lot of Soviet motorcycles are still sold, and in villages and towns old motorcycles produced during the Soviet Union are still popular, although there are already many more Chinese motorcycles and mopeds.

Today I will tell you about one of the most popular Soviet motorcycles - Izh Jupiter-5. By the way, this model can be called not only Soviet, but also Russian, since the Izh Jupiter-5 motorcycle was produced until 2008.

Izh Jupiter-5 appeared in 1985, replacing the previous generation model on the assembly line - Izh Jupiter-4. The main difference between the Jupiter model and the Planet model, produced in parallel, is its engine - the Planet has a single-cylinder engine, and the Jupiter has a two-cylinder engine.

By the way, it is possible to install an engine from Jupiter on the Planet and vice versa, but this is out of despair, as they say.

When developing the Jupiter-5 model, it was decided, without further ado, to take Jupiter-4 and fix all the problems that the owners of these motorcycles complained about. What did the owners of Jupiter-4 complain about? If my memory serves me correctly (oh, it was a long time ago), then the main problems with Jupiter-4 were electrical problems and fuel consumption was also somehow not very modest.

In itself, Izh Jupiter-5 is a classic motorcycle, as they say now; in Soviet times it was called universal. The creators of Izh Jupiter-5 somehow failed to cope with the unreliability of electrical equipment, but they managed to reduce the appetite for the new engine.

The new engine was derated from 28 to 24 horsepower, and retuned for low-end traction due to increased torque. It’s just that in 1985 it became clear that Izh motorcycles were in demand mainly in rural areas; in cities, family people preferred cars, and urban youth bought Javas and Chesets. Why do you need speed characteristics in the countryside if there have never been normal roads there? But the traction at the bottom will never be superfluous!

Izh Jupiter-5 was more comfortable for movement than Izh Planet-5. There was significantly less vibration when driving on the Jupiter, all thanks to the two-cylinder engine. But at the same time, Jupiter-5 did not tolerate disregard for itself. For all those who don't care, Izh Jupiter periodically malfunctioned, the cylinders worked unevenly.

But in the hands of a handy man, Jupiter-5 was better than the Planet. The process of starting Jupiter-5 alone is worth it - the motorcycle could be started even while sitting astride it. But by starting Planet-5 like this, you could get a specific kick in the foot or ankle.

And this is a liquid-cooled version

The weight of the Izh Jupiter-5 motorcycle is 160 kg, so boys of 16-18 years old might not be able to cope with such a heavy motorcycle. Although some people in the village rode such motorcycles even at the age of 14, the village boys in the Soviet Union were healthy and strong.

The Izh Jupiter-5 engine is two-cylinder with a displacement of 347 cubic centimeters. The engine is two-stroke, in case anyone has forgotten, this means that gasoline must be mixed with oil right in the tank. Air cooled engine.

The Izh Jupiter-5 motorcycle alone, that is, without a sidecar, can pull 145 kg. But this is only official, and in the village on Izhak three people could easily fit in, and Jupiter-5 easily pulled two men over a hundred kg, but then it was not worth jumping over bumps and holes, otherwise the shock absorbers would fly.

Structurally, the Izh Jupiter-5 motorcycle was much more modern and technologically advanced than the Urals and Dneprs of the same years of production. Jupiter-5 easily beat any Soviet boxer on the track, both from a standstill and at maximum speed.

But the reliability of Soviet boxer engines is higher, and there is less fuss with four-stroke engines, and they have more resource. And what about the boxer consuming 10 liters of gasoline, while Izh Jupiter -5 only 5 liters, so all this can be treated by installing a normal carburetor (one!). Then the consumption of the boxer becomes 6 liters, no more. But that's a completely different story, as they say.

Now it’s not difficult to buy an Izh Jupiter-5 motorcycle; it will cost from 15,000 rubles to approximately 75,000 rubles. But now spare parts made in the USSR are difficult to find, and often expensive, and installing Chinese plasticine is a so-so repair.

Review of Izh Planet 3

In the Soviet Union, the motorcycle was considered one of the best models, because it was not for nothing that 478,496 copies were produced for sale. The engineers could boast that they were the first in the USSR to create a motorcycle equipped with direction indicators. IL was used by people who just wanted to go for a ride or by those who wanted to transport cargo or go fishing or hunting. The tubular frame could withstand a high weight; the weight of Planet 3 was 168 kilograms. The maximum recommended load was 170 kg, but this is far from the limit.

For off-road driving, more or less comfortable conditions were provided by the telescopic front fork and spring suspension on the rear wheel.

The appearance of the Planet 3 motorcycle was quite famous, but engineers were able to improve it with new parts and their location. The wheel guards were new, the rims themselves were larger and had a radius of 18 inches, and the rear swingarm was significantly improved. Looking at the photo, many notice the presence of chrome parts. The appearance became better after removing the protective cover on the rear shock absorbers.

The dashboard on Planet 3 is simple; many people don’t even like it. They decided to place two lights on the panel, the first of which is green and indicates the neutral speed sensor. The second is red and shows the operation of the generator. Accordingly, there is a large speedometer. The speedometer backlight is made in a pleasant green color.

Over the course of several years of production, Izhevsk designers managed to create three modifications of this model - 01, 02 and Planet 3K. The latter differed only in the presence of a side stroller. Today this model is already considered old and ugly, but among Soviet technology it is one of the favorite “old ladies”. The most common motorcycle is in villages and countryside, where such equipment is useful to anyone.

"Minsk M1A". First Belarusian

To this day, the “Minskachi” remains the most “popular” motorcycle in Belarus. They run along the roads of the entire former Union, and not only. But most of them, of course, are in their homeland.

Minsk motorcycles passed their half-century anniversary a long time ago (the first models already fully deserve the name “vintage”), and very soon, on July 12, they will celebrate their 61st birthday.

The first Belarusian “bike” was the Minsk M1A, which had many “relatives” not only in the USSR, but also abroad. The “ancestor” of the motorcycle was developed in 1939 by the Germans. The DKW RT125 turned out to be so successful that analogues of this motorcycle were produced under different names in 7 countries around the world, including the USA, England and Japan.

By the way, one of the old “Minsk racers” was tested in harsh conditions by one of the hosts of the famous British show Top Gear, Richard Hammond. He drove it from south to north almost all of Vietnam. CV of the charismatic “car maniac”: “This is the AK-47 among motorcycles - reliable, simple, easy to repair. It was made specifically for those countries where there are no roads.”

Elimination of loose brake pedal on an IZh motorcycle with a sidecar

Reliable fastening On IZh motorcycles with a sidecar equipped with a brake, the pedal soon becomes loose. In this case, the order of operation of the brakes of the motorcycle and the trailer is disrupted, which is why the crew skids to the side when braking, especially sharply. In addition, the adjustment of the brake light switch changes. To eliminate this drawback, I turned out axle 9 (see Fig. “b”) and attached the brake pedal to it, drilling a hole in the support plate 2 of the frame to 12 mm. Since then this unit has been working properly. Extending the service life of the RP1S relay for motorcycles IZH-Planet 3, Jupiter-3

A more reliable method For some motorcycles IZH-P3, IZH-YU3, the electronic relay RP1S of the turn indicators is constantly turned on along with the ignition, which shortens its service life. It was suggested that it should only work when the turn indicators are turned on (in B.F. Demchenko’s book “Tips” for motorcyclists", published by DOSAAF, 1986 and the magazine "Behind the Wheel"), a minor modification of the relay by changing the power circuits and introducing two diodes. However, they turned out to impair the clarity of the relay operation. In order to eliminate this drawback, I found a more reliable way to connect the relay with the same change in the power circuits, but without additional diodes. Instead of the standard turn signal switch, we install a P25 A light switch (it is sold in all auto and motorcycle stores) and connect it as shown in figure (b). Do not forget to seal the three additional terminals from the relay like the existing ones. A. KOROLCHUK Volyn region, village. Milushi Output stage of relay RP1S and... Read more >>

Three-wheeled all-terrain vehicle Transmission diagram: 1 - engine; 2 — clutch; 3 — gearbox; main gear; 5 - gearbox; 6 — differential; 7 - drive wheel. It is known how much demand there is in our countryside for “Dnepr” and “Ural” - heavy motorcycles with sidecars. And you can carry cargo on this one, and its cross-country ability is not bad. But still, these machines, having solid power (32 - 36 hp), cannot fully use it on soft ground due to insufficient traction of the only one of the three driving wheels. The wheel of the sidecar located on the side not only creates great resistance to movement, since it follows its own track, but also tends to turn the motorcycle in its direction, making movement even more difficult. Therefore, for a three-wheeled vehicle, the most effective way to increase cross-country ability is to transfer torque to the sidecar wheel. According to this scheme, the MV-750 motorcycle was made, produced... Read more >>

Dnepr-11 and Dnepr-16. New items

Motorcycle with the brand “Dnepr” Motorcycle “Dnepr-11”. The “Dnepr-16” model with a sidecar wheel drive can be easily distinguished from the one shown in the picture by its separate saddles. The Kiev Motorcycle Plant has begun serial production of new machines “Dnepr-11” and “Dnepr-16”. The first replaced the Dnepr MT10-36 road model, the second replaced the Dnepr-12 off-road motorcycle. During their development, the latest requirements of active and passive safety standards, as well as the wishes of motorcyclists, were taken into account. First, let’s talk about the new components that are common to both models. These are the stroller wheel brake, parking brake, lights and combination switches. Improvements refer to design factors that improve traffic safety. The braking distance from a speed of 60 km/h has become 5 meters shorter. The mechanically operated parking brake operates reliably... Read more >>

Main advantages

Motorcycles IZH Jupiter -5 were quite simple in design and did not require large maintenance costs. Today there are many who want to criticize this technique without regard to the times, but the model was in great demand among the population. She is not forgotten even now. On the secondary market only, on Avito websites, more than 2,000 units of equipment are offered for sale every day. The main reasons for its popularity are:

  • Maintainability and simplicity of design.
  • The presence of a semi-automatic clutch.
  • Smooth ride, comfortable movement.
  • Can be used with or without a side trailer.
  • Good car dynamics without a side trailer.
  • Durable welded tubular frame.
  • Reliable and simple gearbox.
  • Powerful alternator, good light.
  • Confident engine starting in any weather conditions.

This is not an exhaustive list of the outstanding qualities of the machine.

The motorcycle has the highest level of maintainability. The shortage of spare parts of that time has given way to their abundance today. Any components can be purchased through online stores or in markets at affordable prices. With a small set of tools, a motorcycle of the simplest design can easily be rebuilt on the road. Replacing parts of the cylinder-piston group can be done without any problems directly in the field. More complex repairs involving removal and complete disassembly of the engine are possible in a garage without the involvement of large specialists or special tools.

The motorcycle is equipped with a semi-automatic clutch, which greatly facilitates the driver’s work. Gear shifting is possible without squeezing the clutch lever on the steering wheel. The clutch release mechanism is activated automatically when you press the gear shift foot. Before pressing the foot, it is advisable to release the gas - the switching will occur smoothly, without jerking the transmission. No other domestic motorcycle has such a system.

The machine is characterized by a smooth ride in single mode and with a side trailer. Riding a well-maintained motorcycle is a pleasure. The driver's position is comfortable and ergonomic. The passenger in the side trailer feels comfortable, protected from the flow of oncoming air and dust by a high transparent plastic reflector and a soft, durable awning made of leatherette. The trailer wheel has a spring-hydraulic shock absorber, which effectively absorbs uneven road surfaces.

A motorcycle with the index Izh Jupiter-5K-01 can be used with or without a side trailer. Operation of a motorcycle with a trailer is possible only if there is a corresponding mark in the technical passport when registering with the traffic police. When installing a trailer, the final drive gear ratio is changed by installing a smaller diameter drive sprocket with 16 teeth. At the same time, the engine traction force increases significantly due to an increase in the number of crankshaft revolutions. A 19-tooth drive sprocket is installed on a single motorcycle, increasing the speed capabilities of the motorcycle.

Without a side trailer, the machine has good dynamic capabilities. The two-cylinder engine quickly picks up speed and is capable of accelerating the car from a parking lot to 100 km/h in 12 seconds. This figure is 0.5-1.0 seconds better than that of the most advanced car at that time, the VAZ-2109, or the popular imported Java-350 motorcycle.

The motorcycle is assembled on a durable tubular frame, which is simply impossible to damage if used correctly. The side trailer has its own, no less durable frame, made of thick-walled steel pipes.

The gearbox is assembled in the same housing with the engine and has its own crankcase compartment. The unit is powerful, reliable, always working without problems throughout the entire service life of the motorcycle. There is an inspection hatch on the side cover of the clutch drive mechanism to check the oil level in the clutch housing and gearbox.

Electrical equipment operates from a powerful modern 12 V alternating current generator. Alternating current is converted to direct current by a diode bridge. All old problems associated with the operation of 6-volt DC generators installed on previous machines have been eliminated. The electrical system has become significantly more reliable. The headlight has halogen optics, which produces a fairly powerful stream of light.

The engine starts reliably at any time of the year due to the installation of an emergency start system that supports starting with a weakly charged battery.

Major renovation

A technical revision of the IZH Planet-5 model should be carried out as necessary:

  • when the piston group wears out, when compression decreases and engine power drops;
  • when extraneous noise appears in the gearbox;
  • when the clutch “drives”.

Simultaneously with the overhaul of the motorcycle, you should carry out an inspection and preventive maintenance of all components and assemblies without exception, as well as touch up scratches and level out dents on the motorcycle body, if any.

If it is necessary to replace individual parts, they should only be replaced with new ones purchased in specialized stores. Spare parts for IZH Planet-5 are sold in a sufficient range.

Preventive motorcycle repairs can be done in a home workshop or garage

It is important that you have a set of necessary tools at hand, these are spanners and open-end wrenches, drifts, files and rasps, a vice, a drilling machine and a grinder

Major repairs of a motorcycle, engine or gearbox are only possible in a specialized workshop equipped with all the necessary equipment, lathes and milling machines and a full set of metalworking tools.

If there is a need to replace a worn cylinder along with the piston, then you should purchase new parts in the original packaging, since in this case they will be matched in pairs and match the parameters. In this case, no adjustment is required.

Engine diagnostics and repair

It is sometimes impossible to find the cause of a breakdown after one visual inspection. In some cases, complete disassembly of the IZH Jupiter 5 engine is necessary. But if you find out the reason, you can quickly solve the problem yourself. Here are examples of main faults and repair recommendations:

  1. If your kickstarter turns on the crankshaft, you must:
Tighten the fasteners more tightly, and in case of severe damage, replace the kickstarter shaft and lever. This usually happens after the IZ Jupiter 5 engine has been boosted.
  2. If the oil is selected incorrectly, especially if it is very viscous in winter, it is necessary to select a more correct temperature regime.
  3. If the trigger spring is weakened, it must be replaced.
  4. If no fuel gets into the carburetor, you should clean it in a solvent, and also blow out the channels and fuel supply hose with pressurized air.
  5. If there is no spark in the combustion chamber, replace the spark plug or clean it.
  6. When the throttle valve sticks, it is necessary to adjust its drive and clean the carburetor.
  7. If the engine is unstable or does not start the first time, it is worth checking:
Fuel supply system. The fuel mixture may be oversaturated with air. The solution to this problem is to replace the air filters and install new gaskets.
  8. Is the capacitor OK? If strong sparking occurs between the contacts, the capacitor must be replaced.
  9. Severe wear or burning of the spark plug. In most cases, it is the spark plugs that cause poor starting and uneven engine operation.

These are the main problems that may occur during operation. How to disassemble the IZ Jupiter 5 engine is written in detail in the maintenance book issued upon purchase. Everything stated in it is written in clear text, with diagrams and detailed instructions.

Not only the repair of a Soviet unit is within the power of any owner.

There are many questions about how to assemble the IZH Jupiter 5 engine yourself, modifying it. For example, installing a more reliable carburetor or a more stylish and loud muffler can be done quickly enough without significant financial investments.

Tuning an IZH Jupiter engine with your own hands is possible if you have enough time and enthusiasm. You just need to be persistent.

The motorcycle has a favorable ratio of cost, build quality and maintenance requirements. An ideal option for people with a small budget and those who want to get universal equipment. However, frequent breakdowns will take a lot of time. It's worth being prepared for this, since some bikes can be 40-50 years old.

“IZH Planet 5”: repair and prevention

Motorcycles, like any road equipment, need maintenance and repair. The IZH Planeta-5 model has a fairly long service life, but at the same time the machine requires preventive and sometimes major repairs. Routine maintenance of the motorcycle can be limited to timely lubrication of the hinge and sliding components, which include the rear suspension bushings, chain drive, accelerator handle and front brake lever.

The brake mechanisms themselves also need periodic cleaning. If the front wheel of the motorcycle is equipped with a disc brake, it must be disassembled and washed with a liquid cleaner such as Schnell-Reiniger or another product of a similar effect. As a rule, front disc brake maintenance is carried out when replacing the pads.

If the motorcycle has drum brakes, they also need to be periodically disassembled, cleaned and adjusted. This must be done at least once a year, and in the event of extraneous sounds during movement, knocking or friction, an inspection of the brake mechanism should be carried out immediately. The malfunction can be eliminated by adjusting the unit, and if the part breaks or becomes deformed, it must be replaced. It is unacceptable to ride a motorcycle with faulty brakes.

The Unfinished Story

Despite these shortcomings, residents of the outback showed a certain interest in this specific technique. Due to the specific design of the equipment, tuning has become a favorite pastime of many owners. This gave TMZ specialists a reason to develop several additional modifications, among which was even the Tula TMZ-5.971 tricycle, produced in a small series.

It was assumed that the three-wheeled model would become an alternative to the popular TGA 200 Ant scooter. It is not known exactly how many of these machines were produced. The collapse of the USSR and the resulting problems in the economy could not but affect the work of TMZ.

In an effort to survive, enterprises of the defense complex, which included the Tula Machine-Building Plant, sometimes even took risky steps. Another attempt was made to improve the Tula motorcycle and promote the model to the European market.

But it soon became clear that, according to EEC standards, a bike with a center of gravity so significantly shifted to the side cannot be allowed for use. The idea is dead. The model was finally discontinued in 1996.

How to make water cooling on Izh Planet 5? | Topic author: Bryda

Tuning (Baha) For those who want to put the cylinder from the launcher on the planet. I wrote briefly about 2 types of cylinders. Many people say that this cylinder is G and the motor will have traction, but there will be no power. Partially right. But we have 2 types of launcher cylinders: 1. Front cylinder 10 (the purge windows are like the Izh 350 and Izh 49 there, and we can adjust the exhaust to the inlet, because there is enough meat) it has 9 hp.

2. P 350 (blow windows as in p 4) maximum speed 4000 and power with a membrane carb and without a muffler 13.5 hp. And these Puskachev hp were obtained without a resonator, and on a diaphragm carburetor (which is needed so as not to waste almost any fuel, and so that the internal combustion engine works and pulls at the bottom). That is, by replacing the planetary carb we will already increase the power significantly by approximately 3-5 hp. because the stock speed will increase by approximately 1.5 times due to the larger diffuser (the starter, like a 14 mm one, generally has a carb diffuser). Well, we install a muffler with a factory resonator from p5. And in the first case, when using the front end of the 10th cylinder, we get a slightly weaker engine than the stock p5 engine, but clearly more powerful than the Izh 49 (that is, the engine will spin weaker, but it will pull at the bottom. It will be better) . Well, when using the n 350 Puskachev cylinder, we will get the same characteristics of the internal combustion engine as the n 5 and n 4. That is, we ourselves choose what is preferable to you. We often hear that on the launch cylinder some have the same performance characteristics, and some have the tops cut off, but the traction at the bottom has increased. The reason for this is that the cylinders from launchers p 350 and pd 10 are identical in appearance. But the p 350 has an aluminum cylinder head, and the purge windows are different (i.e. the p 350 has 13.5 hp, versus 9 hp for the pd 10). That's why many people generalize like this. The cylinders are different - compare for yourself author https://vk.com/turbomoto92

Nikolka (Punyabharita) how to visually distinguish the P-10 and P 350 cylinders?

We are constructing a cross-country motorcycle based on Izh Planet 4

The idea of creating a cross-country motorcycle appeared a long time ago; simply buying a good Japanese motorcycle is not interesting, and it is very expensive, so it was decided to use a domestically produced motorcycle as a donor. The choice was between Izh Planet and Izh Jupiter. Heavy motorcycles such as the Ural and Dnepr were immediately discarded. Later the choice fell on Izh Planet, since the single-cylinder engine of this unit produces good torque at low speeds. And spare parts, almost everything, can be found in stores.

This motorcycle was purchased as the basis of the project. All subsequent work began on the basis of its frame. The condition of all the components was not impressive, so the motorcycle was completely disassembled.

Disassembly. Disassembly took only an evening, since there was almost nothing to disassemble. Everything attached to the motorcycle was removed. Then it came to the chassis and engine.

Appeared before us in all its glory.

Working with the engine.

The engine was completely disassembled and all washed. All seals in the engine were replaced. Also, all bearings were selected from Japanese counterparts; only the roller bearings of the crankshaft remained domestic.

A new Soviet-made piston engine was purchased (it took a lot of effort to find such a rarity). The gear pair of the first gear was supplied from Izh Planet 2, as it has a large gear ratio to obtain more torque. For the same reason, a leading star with a number of teeth of 16 was supplied. This is the smallest number of the produced series. A new chain, new clutch rings and a clutch basket with a double-row chain were also installed. The engine was assembled and all bolt holes were sealed with sealant to prevent oil leaks (domestic engines like to drip oil onto the asphalt). The rear engine mounts to the frame were also strengthened by welding plates onto the main mounts.

Liquid cooling.

It was decided to install liquid cooling on the motorcycle because it will be used for cross-country racing and will often have to work at maximum speed. Air cooling performs its role well if the motorcycle is used with a cradle, and at a normal riding pace. This option was not suitable here. An article was found on the Internet on installing a cylinder on an Izh Planet from the PD10 Starting Engine. According to historical data, it was developed on the basis of the Planet engine, so the mountings are completely identical. All that remained was to solve the problem of the difference in power of these engines. It was solved by installing a Carburetor from Izh Planet K68I. And boring of inlet and outlet channels, as well as purge windows.

Here you see a scan of the combination of the Izh Planet cylinder and the cylinder from PD10. Green indicates the layer of metal that needs to be removed. After modification, the cylinder is placed on the engine, it will work in tandem with a stove radiator from a VAZ 2105. An electric pump for additional heating from a Gazelle car will be installed, it will be controlled by a temperature sensor from a VAZ 2108/09 through a relay. The expansion barrel will be selected according to the volume required liquids.

Remaining improvements:

The frame was cleaned, primed and painted black (well, that's how I wanted it). The rear end has been re-welded to reduce weight and increase ground clearance.

The side covers for the battery and tool have been removed. The front fork was rebuilt. but later a plug was purchased from Izh Planet Sport, it will be installed. Also from Planet Sport a front wheel with a larger radius will be installed. Both tires are supplied with mud, the rear is R18, Czech-made BARUM, the front is R19, domestically produced. The muffler will be manufactured manually, due to the impossibility of installing a standard one and its low efficiency. The front and rear fenders will come from a Kawasaki TTR250 motorcycle.

Now work on the motorcycle has paused a bit, but will continue in the near future. By spring, the motorcycle will leave the garage under its own power.

Thanks everyone for your attention. If anyone is interested, I’ll tell you in more detail what I did and how

Tuning Izh Planet Sport

Making changes to the design of a motorcycle is impractical for a number of reasons:

  1. The resource of many components and assemblies is small. For this reason, it is almost impossible to improve their characteristics without causing damage.
  2. An Izh Planet Sport 350 restored to its original condition is valued significantly higher than its tuned versions.

However, if there is a desire, something can be done. Many athletes participating in cross-country or circuit racing competitions modified the Izh Planet Sport engine, making various changes to its design. A frequently asked question is how many cubic meters can the engine capacity be increased by.

Engine tuning (boosting)

When boosting the engine, the sports team masters altered many things, from the connecting rod and piston group to the exhaust system. The maximum that could be obtained by pressing in a liner from a CZ 500 and using the piston that came with it was a little over four hundred cubic centimeters of working volume.

But such boosting of the Izh Planet Sport engine requires serious professional skills and sophisticated equipment. The thin walls of a standard cast-iron sleeve pressed into an aluminum cylinder do not allow the engine to be bored up to 500 cc.

The exhaust system cannot cope with the removal of the increased volume of exhaust gases, and the support bearings cannot cope with the increased loads. All the talk that there was a factory version of the Izh Planet Sport 500cc is nothing more than a fairy tale. But boring a cylinder is not the only way to increase power and add agility to a motorcycle.

DIY tuning

Installing a new carburetor is a proven way to improve the performance of the Izh Sport without making significant changes to the design. Over the years, Mikuni has released many new, increasingly advanced models with a diffuser diameter of 32 mm.

Engine tuning can be done in other ways without affecting its mechanical components. Starting and stable operation of single-cylinder engines has always presented certain problems, which can be solved by installing electronic ignition on the Izh Planet Sport. Such kits are produced by several manufacturers, and their installation does not take much time.

When using BKSZ with power units of other modifications, you should be very careful. When installing the ignition from a Minsk motorcycle on the Izh Planet Sport, you must remember that the crankshafts of the engines of these machines rotate in opposite directions. The wires going from the coil to ground and the switch will have to be swapped. Such an engine modification is quite justified.

Sunrise. The most rustic.

Voskhod motorcycles began to be produced in the city of Kovrov, Vladimir region, in 1957. These were very unpretentious single-cylinder motorcycles (173.7 cm3 engine). The Dyagterev plant constantly improved this model, releasing onto the market after the Voskhod its modernized versions, Voskhod-2, Voskhod-3, Voskhod-3M. The latest Voskhod motorcycle was the 3M-01 model with a 15 hp engine.

Because of their reliability, Voskhod motorcycles became real workers in thousands of Soviet villages. Even now you can easily find a Voskhod motorcycle in good condition there.

Advantages and disadvantages

It is unfair to evaluate Izh p3 by modern standards. Its development took place almost half a century ago, and the bike was completely consistent with its time.

Advantages

  • Easily removable wheels with tangential spokes. If necessary, they can be easily dismantled and put back.
  • Spacious 18-liter gas tank. The range without refueling during quiet driving on the highway reaches 350 km/h.
  • Maintainability. There is nothing on this bike that can't be fixed.
  • Possibility to install a stroller.

Flaws

  • 2-stroke engine. Its lifespan is short, and you need to fill the gas tank with oil at every gas station.
  • Mechanical drum brakes. They are ineffective even taking into account the sluggish acceleration dynamics.
  • The advanced age of all specimens. Finding Izh Planet 3 in a “living” state is becoming more and more difficult every year.
