Aprilia RS250

is a two-stroke 249 cc (15.2 cu in) sports motorcycle from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Aprilia.

The Aprilia RS250 is a racing motorcycle with technologies derived from Aprilia's racing experience. It is inspired by the Aprilia RSW250 Grand Prix motorcycle used by riders such as Valentino Rossi, Max Biaggi and Loris Capirossi in MotoGP racing. [12]

You might think that you can only find lightweight wheels, radial calipers, an aluminum frame and swingarm on larger bikes, but you'd be wrong.

The RS 250 is more than an unusual motorcycle - it's one of the few two-stroke road bikes still in production today, as high-displacement two-stroke engines are quickly becoming a thing of the past due to stringent emissions regulations.

But the Aprilia RS 250 still remains in the company's production program. The heart of this motorcycle is the outdated engine from the Suzuki RGV 250, first presented to the public in 1989. This V-twin two-stroke engine features a number of power-enhancing features, such as a power exhaust valve, electronic sensor-equipped 34mm Mikuni flat-spool carburetors, and ceramic-coated cylinder walls. Aprilia has modified the engine's intake and exhaust system, resulting in an increase in power to 52 kW (70 hp) at the crankshaft, equivalent to 280 hp/liter - the maximum power output for road motorcycles.

The motorcycle's high-quality chassis is designed to provide control over the enormous power of this two-legged projectile. The diagonal-type aluminum frame has amazing rigidity, equipped with a full set of adjustments, an inverted telescopic fork and a rear shock absorber, both manufactured by Showa, allowing you to increase the motorcycle’s suspension in accordance with the conditions of any route and any condition of the road surface. Wide sports tires provide incredible grip, and Brembo dual-disc front brakes with 4-piston calipers provide high stopping power, more than enough for a motorcycle weighing just 140 kg.

While the RS 250's engine is based on a design that's more than a decade old, the design of the bike is undeniably modern. The aluminum swingarm of the rear suspension of the spatial design and the dual exhaust system mufflers located on one side are made in the style of cars that participated in the world championship in road racing.

Ever since Suzuki discontinued the RGV 250, the RS 250 has become a motorcycle second to none in its class. Aprilia RS 250 SP Trofeo 2021

Despite the difficult conditions associated with the coronavirus pandemic, the Aprilia RS 250 SP Trofeo was a success. Borrowing the sporty features of the Aprilia RS 125, the first Trofeo was equipped with Brembo brakes, Öhlins suspension, Marchesini wheels in good tires, and in addition, the special version was made lighter by 36 kg. The RS 125 chassis was a good base for the single-cylinder 250 cc four-valve DOHC engine, tuned to produce 28 hp at 9500 rpm and vigorously firing the 105 kg motorcycle from the start, while remaining controllable and predictable even for beginners.

Chassis[edit]

The frame is made from a cast aluminum-magnesium twin-spar alloy and is reinforced with a thin-walled monocoque. The engine is a fully stressed unit manufactured by Benelli for Aprilia. The banana swingarm is made from the same polished aluminum alloy as the rest of the frame. The reason for the banana swingarm shape is so that the expansion chambers can work unimpeded under the engine to improve cornering clearance.

The fork is a 41mm Showa inverted fork (on MY98+ models) with adjustable compression and rebound, while the rear suspension is a Sachs monoshock adjustable for preload, compression and rebound. The front brakes of the RS 250 are Brembo dual 298 mm discs with Brembo Oro four calipers. The rear brake is a 220mm single disc with a Brembo two-piston caliper.

Front and rear wheels are lightweight 5-spoke cast aluminum wheels measuring 3.50x17 front (3.0x17 on older models) and 4.50x17 rear, requiring 120/60x17 and 150 tires / 60×17 respectively.

The RS 250 SP Trofeo was so well received that Aprilia decided to repeat the experience this year, but in a new form. In 2021, the RS 660 Trofeo awaits us - a new stage in the implementation of the same idea. The Aprilia RS 660 was also conceived as a racing option, but allowing novice riders to take it to the next level. Aprilia will produce a limited edition of 42 units of this version, which will be equipped with an engine tuned to produce 105 hp, enough to give the 153 kg motorcycle a very significant acceleration. Aprilia's racing director, Romano Albesiano, said the bike will deliver lap times almost on par with professional riders, which should certainly appeal to beginners. Despite the fact that the RS 660 Trofeo is built on the road version of the RS, it is equipped with quite serious components that reflect its racing purpose: Öhlins Racing suspension, Brembo brakes, lightweight forged aluminum wheels in racing tires in sizes 120/70-17 and 180/60 -17.

The Aprilia RS 660 Trofeo opens a series of six races open to novice riders aged 15 years and above, with the first race taking place on 16 May at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Both Trofeo models will be there, as Aprilia Racing will keep 21 of the 42 RS 660 Trofeo units produced in its fleet. These motorcycles can be rented for a season for 34,900 euros, with Aprilia Racing taking care of all servicing, tuning and restoration.

The price may seem steep, but it also includes tires, fuel, lube, brake pads, assistance in the paddock and on the track, as well as accommodation and even food.

This rental formula is designed to create a closer relationship between Aprilia Racing and potential champions, allowing young riders to focus on racing rather than the hassle of maintaining a bike or finding hotels. The remaining 21 motorcycles will be available for 17,959 euros, but only in other markets (probably North American).

In 1998, Aprilia released an all-new look RS250, also called RS250GP1, to celebrate Aprilia's victory in the 250cc racing class. Its appearance is similar to Marco Melandri's RSWGP250 bike, with the same engine and frame as the pre-1998 model. The bike has a dummy air intake. Changes include:

  • Revised overall styling of the bike with a more modern feel.
  • New Showa front forks and adjustable rear ride height
  • New style instrument panel with new functionality.
  • New wheels and tires: The front rim is now 3.5x17 rather than 3.0x17 on pre-1998 models. Front tire 120/60x17 instead of 110/70x17 installed on pre-1998 models.

Suspension system

If we go deeper, we need to say the following: there is a telescopic fork installed at the front, and two spring shock absorbers at the rear.
