Review of Patron Sport 250 or How I became a motorcyclist

China produces a great variety of budget motorcycles of various classes. The Patron company, for example, produces more than a dozen different models. And Sport 200 is its answer to other motorcycle manufacturers from China.

For any beginner looking for a sportbike, the Patron Sport 200 may seem like a very interesting choice. It doesn’t particularly stand out among other small-capacity Chinese pseudo-sport motorcycles, except perhaps because it’s cheap, but the low price is its main argument. Externally, it generally resembles the first generation Yamaha FZ-1S, at least with the front fairing and scanty side plastic. So you shouldn’t expect any impressive capabilities from the Patron Sport 200 - this is the most ordinary small-capacity bike, slightly stylized as a racing vehicle. Which doesn't make him bad at all! Because the Patron Sport 200 motorcycle copes quite confidently with the task of learning to ride a motorcycle, and just with everyday trips.

Technical characteristics of Cartridge Sport 200

Considering how much dealers are asking for this bike, it's obvious that it's something of an extreme budget item. That's the way it is - forget about modern technology. Only solutions proven over the years! Simple, cheap, not very effective, but quite reliable. A steel frame, an ancient air-cooled motor in its design (14.7 hp and 15 Nm of torque), which must be desperately turned to high speeds in order for the motorcycle to pick up speed. The picture is completed by a conventional 5-speed gearbox, kickstarter, analogue instrument panel and hard, slippery seats. The maximum speed of the Patron Sport 200 is stated to be 120 km/h, but in reality it can only accelerate to it with a tailwind, and there is also a suspicion that the speedometer is slightly fibbing.

The pendants add some nice variety to this set of archaisms that make up the Patron Sport 200. At the rear there is a regular pendulum with a monoshock absorber, but at the front the Chinese have installed an inverted telescopic fork. The suspensions have two disadvantages - they are too soft, and they do not have full settings, and they are clearly designed for lightweight Asians, and not for larger Russians. However, this drawback is easily eliminated; fortunately, you can buy reinforced springs for the fork and, optionally, another rear shock absorber without any problems. The Patron Sport itself weighs a little, about 128 kg, and it really doesn’t seem heavy. The braking system is also quite decent; both wheels are equipped with disc brakes with 2-piston calipers, like on the younger brother of this motorcycle, the Patron Sport 150.

The dimensions of the bike are puzzling. It is indeed very compact, and in city traffic jams this is a significant plus, but the problem is different - it is simply cramped to sit on it. There is nothing to say about the passenger - technically, of course, there is an opportunity to take him on board, but in reality, sitting in this case will be uncomfortable for both, the pilot and the number two. Not to mention the fact that with such a load, the Patron Sport 200 immediately loses the last vestiges of dynamics. But it has a spacious gas tank! As much as 14 liters, but the gasoline consumption of this bike does not exceed 3-3.5 liters even with the most aggressive driving.

Reviews from owners of Patron Sport 200

I don’t know why some people complain about the flimsy suspension, as for me, the rear shock absorber is generally too hard, you can beat your ass on our roads. It’s normal to sit on the Patron with a height of 175 cm, but after an hour and a half, your legs become numb and you want to get off and stretch. There are no complaints about the technical part, there were no breakdowns, only replacement of consumables and timely maintenance. Ivan, Moscow, Patron Sport 200 '2016.

The worst thing about this motorcycle is the vibrations, they are everywhere and always as soon as the revs become above average. You get used to it, of course, after 10 minutes you don’t notice them anymore, but every time you get on the bike, it’s really annoying. Sergey, Nizhny Novgorod, Patron Sport 200 '2017.

A very good motorcycle, I bought it for 74k, then invested about 30 more in tuning during the season, not counting consumables, including normal tires. I stuck the Mikuni carb in, installed a larger driven sprocket, and replaced the chain with a normal Japanese one (it’s better to immediately throw the original one in the trash). The engine reaches a maximum speed of 120 km/h, I think if there was a sixth gear, it would go faster. The headlights at the front are excellent, they shine powerfully and are adjustable both horizontally and vertically. The tidy is good, readable, no glare from the sun. I don't plan to change the motor yet. Evgeniy, Voronezh, Patron Sport 200 '2018.

Pros and cons of Patron Sport 200

Advantages

  • Affordable price. The motorcycle itself, its spare parts, and consumables are very cheap.
  • Abundance of tuning. The same Aliexpress is full of different parts for the Patron Sport 200, there is even a piston with an increased displacement.
  • Good handling. Thanks to its low weight and short wheelbase, the bike steers very easily indeed.
  • Simplicity of design. You can repair and maintain this motorcycle on your own without spending money on motorcycle services.

Flaws

  • Too compact in size. Riders who are at least slightly taller than average will likely find the Patron Sport 200 to be cramped.
  • Low quality plastic and paintwork. Noticeable gaps, thin and easily scratched paint, fragile plastic elements.
  • Sluggish dynamics. After 70-80 km/h the motorcycle picks up speed rather reluctantly.
  • Design. The appearance of the Patron Sport 200 is completely unmemorable and secondary.

Total

In terms of technology, the Patron Sport 200 is inferior not only to Japanese small-capacity sportbikes, but also to many Chinese ones. All the technologies used in its design were tested decades ago, and externally it is stylized as a racing motorcycle only superficially. However, all this does not make him bad. Just don’t think that the Patron Sport 200 is a sportbike, even a small one. This is the most ordinary road motorcycle, budget, light and archaic, to which Chinese designers have given slightly modernized, albeit completely secondary, features. But it is inexpensive, and also very good in quality. It can be argued that the Patron Sport 200 is very, very good as a first motorcycle.

Most Chinese sportbikes are as similar to each other as two peas in a pod. How does the Sport 150 differ from them from the famous company Patron? In general, nothing serious, but when choosing your first motorcycle, you can still pay attention to it.

The lightweight Patron Sport 150 motorcycle is positioned by the manufacturer as a sports bike, but it seems that Chinese designers didn’t even try very hard to give it the features of a racing vehicle. We are all, of course, already accustomed to numerous Chinese “sport motorcycles” that have only a superficial resemblance to real sport bikes, and even that is superficial, but the Patron Sport 150, it seems, does not even outwardly try to seem like one. This is probably for the best - in most cases, attempts to copy the appearance of some Honda CBR 600RR or Yamaha YZF-R1 look at best simply unconvincing, and at worst - simply pathetic. However, the Patron Sport 150 does not look like a copy of any famous Japanese model. The bike may be unprepossessing, but it is, so to speak, on its own. Whether someone in particular likes him or not is another matter.

MOTORCYCLE PATRON FABIO 200

Fabio (The name emphasizes the Italian style in motorcycle design). Classic style, modern design, excellent performance characteristics, as well as the exceptional friendliness of the motorcycle to the driver and passenger - these are the distinctive features of the Fabio 150 model. The appearance of the motorcycle lacks elements that emphasize brutality and aggression. On the contrary, the elegance and charm of the Fabio 150 are given by smooth, rounded lines that form a harmonious silhouette. A high level of comfort is ensured thanks to refined ergonomics and convenient location of controls. A reliable and economical four-stroke engine in combination with a five-speed gearbox provides good dynamic qualities, and the modern design of the chassis, suspension and brakes provides excellent controllability, comfort and safety when operating the motorcycle in various road conditions. In all respects of safety, ecology and quality, the Patron Fabio 150 motorcycle meets current international and domestic standards, which is confirmed by the presence of European and Russian certificates, according to which a “Vehicle Type Approval” has been issued for this motorcycle model.

Technical characteristics of Patron Sport 150

The first thing that should alert you when buying a motorcycle that has the word “sport” in its name is the price. At the time of this writing, this bike costs on average just under a thousand dollars, which is both good and bad. It’s good because the price tag is more than affordable, but it’s bad because for that kind of money you can’t buy a real sportbike, even a small one. However, the Patron Sport 150 is de facto the most ordinary classic “road car”, extremely simple and budget-friendly, and “sport” is only the name.

So, what do the Chinese offer us? The usual diagonal steel frame, in which a 1-cylinder, 2-valve 150 cc air-cooled engine is placed, is extremely archaic, but, according to reviews, very reliable. It works with a carburetor, a classic 5-speed transmission and a chain wheel drive. Simple, budget-friendly, familiar, there’s simply nothing to add here. The Patron Sport 150 engine can produce 11.3 hp. (at 8500 rpm) and produce a torque of 10 Nm (at 6000 rpm). It has neither lows nor highs, but in the main operating speed range it drives quite confidently, of course, taking into account its cubic capacity. In addition, the dry weight of the Patron Sport 150 does not exceed 115 kg, which also makes a positive contribution to the dynamics. The maximum speed of the Patron Sport 150, declared by the manufacturer, is 95 km/h. Everything is fair - it really accelerates to 95 km/h. True, already at about 70-80 km/h you will have to unscrew the throttle all the way, be patient and firmly withstand the vibrations that appear in abundance after about 6000-7000 rpm. There is no need to be afraid of speed in suitable conditions, since the motorcycle’s brakes are quite good, with brake discs and 2-piston calipers on both wheels.

Otherwise, the Patron Sport 150 motorcycle is also unremarkable. The suspension is simple, without any adjustments other than the pretension of the rear monoshock. An inverted telescopic fork is installed at the front, which, by the way, is surprising given the low cost of this model. But this is a nice feature; there really are no complaints about the performance of the fork. The only criticism concerns the fork oil filled from the factory; it seems too soft. Apparently, it is designed for the weight of the average Chinese driver, and under the tall Russian motorcyclist the Patron Sport 150 immediately sags noticeably. This problem can be resolved easily and simply, just pour harder oil into the fork, and in extreme cases, install other springs; fortunately, tuning is available in bulk on the Patron Sport 150, and it is inexpensive.

Pros and cons of Patron Sport 150

Advantages

  • Affordable price. The bike is cheap, the price of spare parts and consumables is also not bad.
  • Good brakes. Considering the lack of explosive dynamics and the low weight of the motorcycle, they are really enough to feel confident behind the wheel.
  • Good handling. The Cartridge Sport 150 is capable of turning around in a two-meter space, and it’s easy to dart between cars in city traffic. It can easily outpace even liter sportbikes in traffic jams thanks to its nimbleness and compactness.
  • Modest fuel consumption, not exceeding 2.5-3 liters per 100 km. In addition, the motorcycle seems to be able to run on any gasoline at all - its simple but reliable carburetor will digest whatever you pour into the gas tank.
  • Efficient headlight. It shines much better than one would expect from a budget Chinese small-capacity camera.

Flaws

  • Sluggish acceleration dynamics. Alas, this cannot be taken away - the bike accelerates extremely slowly.
  • Inconvenient standard mirrors. Judging by the reviews, most Patron Sport 150 owners see them mainly as their own shoulders. Luckily, you can buy new ones anywhere.
  • A large number of annoying parasitic vibrations. At high speeds, you generally get the impression that the entire Patron Sport 150 vibrates.
  • Low quality components. While the main components of the motorcycle do not cause any complaints, there are many annoying little things, such as low-quality small parts. Not critical, of course, but still.

If you want a sportbike, even a small one, then it’s better to avoid the Patron Sport 150. But if your goal is to buy a cheap road car for every day, it’s still worth considering. It may not have enough stars in the sky, but it is cheap, and there are plenty of spare parts and tuning for it.

I drove the Patron Sport 200 for six months. A typical representative of the “heavenly Empire”, having a European design, but, alas, not quality. The motorcycle is rather “stedtly”. The dynamics are at the level of a good scooter. For a beginner it will do just fine as a very first motorcycle for experience. True, with one very important condition - if the driver has at least some knowledge of motorcycle repair and knows how to hold a key in his hands. Otherwise, the Patron Sport 200 is an ordinary Chinese motorcycle with all the consequences.

Advantages: price. Appearance. Suitable as a first motorcycle.

Disadvantages: Chinese quality.

Patron Sport 200, 2013

I bought a white Patron Sport 200 today for 80,000 rubles. I was pleased with the build quality. There is an excellent Taiwanese CDI engine paired with a Japanese carburetor - there should be no problems. For 200 cubes it picks up quite well, I think after proper running in 140 will run. I liked the sound. Very comfortable, love the fit. On the track the Patron Sport 200 performs well. I'll go install the alarm tomorrow.

Advantages: controllability. Nice seat. Landing. Stylish design.

Disadvantages: haven't found any yet.

Patron Sport 200, 2012

There is such a motorcycle, I bought it a year ago. To date, my Patron Sport 200 has covered 9400 km. Capable of driving 145 km/h while lying on the tank. He eats not a lot and not a little - 4 liters. Nothing broke, I managed to burn out the two rear “cylinders”. 120 tires will fit and there is still room. In the city, the Patron Sport 200 is ideal; on the highway, 110-120 km/h is not very comfortable.

Advantages: ideal for the city.

Disadvantages: consumption is too high for me.

From a dialogue in a motorcycle showroom

Ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, workers and collective farmers, an idiot's dream has come true! I finally bought myself a motorcycle. I lazily dreamed about this purchase for about 3-4 years. Every time another biker on some Honda flew past me to a deafening roar, I trembled, my knees gave way and I, like an inexperienced chick, started to leak. Chick, leak, hmm, chick.

I have always been and continue to be bothered by 2 questions.

The first concerned those hiking-type people who roam the streets with backpacks, tanned faces and toned bodies. Where are they coming from? For what? How much have they seen in their lifetime? Well and so on. Such characters are not often encountered, so I have a genuine interest in them. For me they are the personification of wild freedom and strength. I don’t know why, maybe it’s some kind of childhood trauma or a childhood dream.

The second question concerned bikers wearing integral helmets (these are closed helmets through which only a person’s gaze can be distinguished). These are some semblance of people with glasses. But here only the glance is visible. Serious, focused, purposeful. It is with such eyes that people on sports bikes fly around the city, cutting through city traffic. For some reason, such people are also very attractive to me. Who are they? Why are they? Where did these bastards get the money for their beautiful jalopies? I’ll send these questions to Alexander Druz, you can’t constantly be tormented by them.

People in helmets and people with backpacks. Apparently, my secret fetish is a biker on a motorcycle, with a backpack, on the top of Elbrus.

The attraction of such people makes you strive for them on a subconscious level. I still have to grow and grow to become a lonely but free tourist (if there is any possibility of transformation at all), but I have become one step closer to bikers.

And let my gaze sometimes be scattered and not purposeful. Even if the only equipment I have is a helmet, which I have already managed to scratch. And even my motorcycle is not a Kawasaki Ninja or a Honda CBR, but some kind of semi-Russian Patron Sport 250

. But the sensations you get when you face the wind with your visor open are unforgettable. Driving a car does not dilute your blood with the spirit of freedom, it does not force you to convulsively inhale huge streams of air. This is different. I'm just getting into it, but I'm already starting to like it.

Let's move on directly to the motorcycle, since the title obliges us to write at least a couple of words as a review.

When I was lazily looking for a bike on Slando, Avito and Auto.ru, I accidentally came across a motorcycle dealership that sells motorcycles assembled from Chinese spare parts on ours from Izhevsk. The picture turned out to be very beautiful, the Patron Sport looks very aggressive, just like a real sports bike. If I'm not mistaken, this is an analogue of the Honda CBR 150 or 250. They are assembled from our own, assembled from spare parts under our brand.

This pleasure costs 105k. For a sport bike the price is ugh. At the same time, for that kind of money you can only buy a completely killed Japanese and tinker with it in the garage after work. Therefore, the choice was made towards a Chinese scooter.

I came to the salon, completed the purchase, showed how to start it and adjust the idle speed. I sat down and drove off.

Compared to Minsk, where I studied at the driving school, Patron is not bad at all. Heavy, beautiful, even goes.

In general: sporty look, price. That's all the positives for now (:

Next came the cons.

From the very beginning, the clutch worked poorly, it was almost impossible to catch neutral when you were standing somewhere at a traffic light. I had to hold the clutch handle. As a result, we tightened the clutch cable - everything was ok. Minus the problem.

Idling. Since I don’t know much about motorcycles yet, I couldn’t manage to adjust the idle speed properly. Without the throttle, the bike constantly stalled. This crap was fixed for me in the salon in 5 minutes. Minus problem number two.

Battery. It happened that once the motorcycle refused to start due to a dead battery. I had to carry it to charge it. At the same time, the instruments show that the generator is charging, everything is ok. The problem was never solved, but it seemed to disappear temporarily.

Speed. In fifth gear at 4500 rpm, the motorcycle begins to behave like the rocket on which Belka and Strelka conquered space. It’s scary to open the throttle any further, because it seems that I’m about to reach escape velocity. To be fair, it must be said that the motorcycle must be run-in at 1600 km and after that you will need to look at how it accelerates and rides. I have driven 400 km so far, so I can leave the acceleration and speed limit for later. Maybe he'll take a shit and run 100 km/hour like Grandma's Buryonka running away from a drunken shepherd.

For a beginner, this technique is quite appropriate. There is only one thing. You will have to come to terms with the fact that minibus drivers, Kaenov and other bikers you meet on the road will look at you condescendingly. Kaen gives this motorcycle one left hand, but I’m generally silent about Japanese motorcycles (:

I won’t say anything about the danger of the device and the fact that a lot of people end up playing on bikes in hospitals. Every second person who finds out that I bought myself a motorcycle tells me about this >_

Honda SBR250 with its 249 cc produces 40 horses, and drives more than 200 mph

Such a comparison would rightly be considered offensive by the Japanese.

and for 100 rubles you can bring the bike straight from Japan, which is what I did, and after 3 years of operation I changed the oil and tires.

Yeah. 130. According to the lying Chinese speedometer. My speedometer goes 110-115 on a flat road, 25-30 grams 100 on a hill. A friend of mine has a Chinese Magnum 200cc, according to his speedometer it goes 130 and at this moment I overtake him by 110-115 km. In total, it lies for 20-25 km.
