British Triumph motorcycles: history, features and popular models

Triumph is a British company with a long history of producing modern motorcycles. Bikes of this brand were able to win the hearts of millions of people who dream of a beautiful motorcycle with a unique style and ideology. The Triumph company has been producing motorcycles for more than 100 years, and throughout this time it has shown only high-quality and exemplary models worthy of being called real bikes. If you like powerful motorcycles that have their own unique standard of style, then you should definitely find out what a Triumph motorcycle is today.

Triumph history

The Triumph company was born in 1885. The headquarters were and are still located in the UK. The founder is considered to be Siegfried Bettmann. It was this man who headed the company until 1936. Under his leadership, the very first Triumph motorcycle was introduced in 1902. The bike was more like a bicycle on which an engine and a gas tank were hung. We can say that it was so. The first Triumph motorcycle was made on the basis of a bicycle frame, which was reinforced for strength. The motorcycle was equipped with a Belgian engine from Minerva, which had a volume of 239 cm3 and a power of 2.5 hp. This power was more than enough for the motorcycle, because... the construction was very light. Torque was transmitted to the wheel through a belt drive.

In 1936 Edward Turner took over the reins of Triumph. Until 1990, many motorcycles were produced under his management, and then a new owner came to his place - John Bloor, who to this day is the owner of the Norton Villers Triumph company.

Modern Triumph motorcycle

In 1990, under the leadership of a new owner, Triumph presented three new models at an exhibition in the German city of Cologne. Having received support and approval from the public, in 1991 Norton Villers Triumph launched production of new motorcycles. Each model was sold in two versions, differing only in engine power. In one working month, the company produced approximately 30-40 new motorcycles, which sold out quite quickly. Some of them even took part in various competitive races. Let's take a closer look at the new models.

Important question

Triumph

If you think about motorcycles in a similar way and agree with the above, then you will surely pick one of these machines to suit your requirements. The only question is which one?

The youngest in the team is the Speedmaster. Footrests extended far forward; The wide, swept-back handlebar and split bench with a small passenger seat are the most important features of the British vision of a cruiser, which is undoubtedly the Speedmaster.

Thick, spherical levers and massive adjustable door handles are a bit reminiscent of Milwaukee cars, and the stylish optional waxed cotton bags add to the impression. On the 273kg Speedmaster you sit low at 700mm, which is the lowest of the three.

The wide, curved rear steering wheel, reminiscent of a wheelbarrow handle, is a manifestation of the cruise style. The tank holds 12 liters of fuel. The Speedmaster pegs are set 22cm further than the Bobber pegs and 36cm further than the black T120 pegs.

After a short search, your feet will find their place. Measuring from the reference point I took as the crankshaft pivot point, the footpegs are offset forward by 11 cm. For comparison, this is 10 cm in the Bobber and 25 cm in the T120. These centimeters affect your completely different driving positions!

I start the engine. If Speedmaster could talk, he would probably say that his motto is "Relax instead of spinning." Press – first gear is engaged. I feel that even from idling the big twin is suddenly rushing forward. Another press - second gear. Another third. And so on, until about 70 km/h, when I caught the “six”. Most often I drive between 2000 and 3000 rpm. I am accompanied by a pleasant, low rumble.

After adjusting for weight and fat tires (it is a cruiser after all), I have no reason to complain about the ride. The car takes turns willingly and handles them easily. Of course, to the best of your cruising capabilities. Component clearances are typically extremely tight on this type of bike, so when going fast through tight corners, that massive footrest comes into contact with the tarmac. To avoid overdoing it, I use the front brake to slow down the pace a little.

Triumph Trident

As mentioned earlier, this model was sold in two versions. The less powerful version had an engine capacity of 750 cm3, and in the second version the engine power was all 900 cm3. Triumph Trident motorcycles were made in a retro style, but due to the high power, the owners equipped the motorcycle with various fairings on their own. It is worth saying that this model did not gain much popularity and its sales fell quickly enough. There were two weighty arguments for this - a high price tag and a long delivery time. At that time, Triumph did not yet have sufficient equipment to speed up the production process, which is why the desired model could be waited for more than a month.

Falls and new successes of the Triumph brand - 1936-1990.

Due to the Great Depression of the 1930s, the company experienced many changes. This includes the departure of the founders and a decrease in business profitability. The situation partially improved with the outbreak of the war, when the company was reoriented towards the military-industrial complex. At this time the following models appeared:

  • Triumph Speed (1937). It received a 500 cm3 engine and a maximum speed of up to 150 km/h.
  • Tiger 100 (1939). Became an improved version of the Triumph Speed with an increased top speed (189.93 km/h).
  • 3TW Military (1940). The model was developed for military couriers and became the world's first motorcycle with an alternator.

Triumph Daytona

Triumph Daytona motorcycles were sports bikes that were equipped with special plastic, fairings and all other things inherent in sports bikes. The Daytona model was also equipped with two engine versions - 750 and 900 cm3. An interesting fact is that the engines from Norton Villers Triumph were three-cylinder. It was an unusual decision, but the British company wanted to go this route. In general, motorcycles of this brand have always been famous for their extraordinary solutions, which attracted the majority of motorcyclists.

Triumph Trophy

The latest model from the line was the Triumph Trophy motorcycle. It was a cruiser - a motorcycle designed for traveling and long trips. Again, there were two versions - 900 and 1200 cm3. Trophy resembled a sportbike, but in fact had its own individual characteristics. This model was much more comfortable, featured a smooth gearbox and low fuel consumption. Even then, Triumph motorcycles were equipped with liquid cooling, which greatly helped them maintain their leading position in the market.

Motorcycle maintenance cost

If you calculate the total cost of maintaining this motorcycle, you must take into account that the price of servicing a Triumph Bonneville motorcycle also depends on transport tax, insurance, the cost of gasoline and other things.
The average car tax will be 1,500 rubles, insurance will be around 1,000 rubles. The cost of gasoline is calculated individually based on the travel mode. If you drive intensively, you may need to change the oil; for motorcycles, synthetics are used, 10W40 or 15W40. If you change it together with the oil filter, you will need 3.8 liters for replacement, without replacing the filter - 3.3 liters. The manufacturer recommends using Mobil 1 Racing 4T or Mobil Extra 4T.

Replacement of consumables: brake pads, chain and air filter is carried out depending on the condition and intensity of use of the motorcycle.

What is a Triumph motorcycle today?

Motorcycles from Norton Villers Triumph have always been famous for their originality, and engineers have developed and implemented the most unusual solutions. Today we can highlight the following features of motorcycles from the British company:

  1. A huge selection of models of various classes. Triumph offers its customers sports motorcycles, cruisers, roadsters and even retro bikes. Any buyer will find a model that he loves and wants to purchase.
  2. Original British style and quality. Today, you are unlikely to find other quality motorcycles made in British style. Triumph motorcycles are loved precisely for their unique British design.
  3. Three-cylinder engines. Even today, the company continues to produce bikes with three-cylinder engines. This has become another distinctive feature of Triumph motorcycles.

Decline and revival of the empire

Since the 60s of the twentieth century, powerful Japanese manufacturers have entered the world market - Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha. These motorcycle brands were able to offer buyers in the United States and European countries, where the lion's share of Triumph motorcycles were imported, motorcycles that were inexpensive, stylish, and at the same time high-quality. Demand for the Triumph motorcycle on the foreign market began to seriously decline, which led to an internal production crisis, worker strikes and a complete shutdown of the plant at the beginning of the 80s.

In 1983, the company was declared bankrupt, at the same time the company was bought out by the English billionaire entrepreneur John Bloor. The businessman invested about 170 million pounds sterling in its restoration and in 7 years was able to return the company to the world market.

The most popular modern models

The Triumph Bonneville is a classic British model with a modern twist. A 68 hp engine is installed here. with liquid cooling. Acceleration to hundreds takes 4 seconds, and gear changes are carried out by a 5-speed gearbox.

Triumph Thunderbird is a large and spacious cruiser with an 89 hp engine. The motorcycle is great for long-distance travel. For this purpose, there are glove compartments, comfortable seats, and a soft, customizable suspension. This bike is not meant to go fast, it is designed to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

Triumph Tiger is a reliable enduro with a powerful chassis. Despite the powerful engine, the bike has low consumption. A very useful advantage of this model is the ABS system, which is very helpful when operating the motorcycle in rough terrain.

Motorcycles from Triumph are truly legendary bikes. A British company with a long history continues to create amazingly reliable and beautiful equipment that is worth its money.

Appearance Rocket III

This motorcycle looks really gorgeous. Nothing superfluous, only what is necessary, everything is massive and serious.

The large front wheel covers the top of an equally massive wing. The edges of a wide cooling radiator are visible behind the wheel.

The tilt angle of the fork is not particularly large, which is dictated by the weight of the motorcycle itself; at a higher angle, the fork could not withstand it for a long time. Wide-set front fork stays made it possible to install two headlights at the front.

The handlebars are quite wide, but the motorcycle is massive and you need a good handlebar to control it. On the latest models, the dashboard is presented in the form of two wells with sensors located above the steering wheel.

The tank is quite wide and voluminous, its shape fitting well into the appearance of the motorcycle.

The seat is double, separate. The seat level is relatively low, which only adds to the stability of the motorcycle.

The passenger seat is located on the rear fender, which ends with a small oval brake light. Below the seats are small glove compartments.

History of English motorcycles

During the short lull between the two world wars, two British weeklies, dedicated to two- and three-wheeled vehicles, were popularized to the maximum. The first was called “The Motor Cycle”, and the second received the well-known name “MOTORCYCLYNG”. This fact already speaks of the considerable power of the English motorcycle industry, which creates many remarkable bikes. English motorcycles of this period already had many vintage features. Grace, as well as sophistication, has always been inherent in English products.

There are many interesting facts in the history of the UK motor industry. Take, for example, the fact that the government of the kingdom (like the Soviet leadership of the post-war period) tried in every possible way to attract civilian motorcyclists to serve in the army. If in our country heavy motos were required to be registered with the military registration and enlistment offices, then in United Kingdom of Great Britain the bikes were used in every possible way by the Royal Signal Service. Moreover, such a two-wheeled service attracted many motorcycle enthusiasts.

During World War II, English motorcycles played an important role in achieving victory. Moreover, not only military models took part in army maneuvers, but also civilian bikes, the drivers of which were volunteers at the front.

Royal Enfield motorcycles had an important mission. They tried to slightly prepare them for the harsh realities of military battles. Often such two-wheelers were equipped with protective headlight covers.

Finally, I would like to note that most of the mass-produced models that were lucky enough to contribute to the great victory over the Nazis are available for public attention in the museums of Great Britain. Both Triumph and Royal Enfield - all English moto brands - have not only ergonomics and high practicality, but also a rather original design that captivates the hearts of even those. Who is poor in developed aesthetic tastes.

Twin family

This family is associated with the appearance of the Triumph Bonneville motorcycle model, which continued the traditions of the Triumph company of the 50-60s of the last century. The motorcycle has the classic appearance of that time: vertically positioned cylinders, double steel frame, classic shock absorber suspension. Even the engine crankcase is stylized to resemble the shapes of bygone years.

The Triumph America motorcycle is a reproduction of American tuning: this is exactly how Americans remade English motorcycles in the middle of the last century. The engine capacity is 865 cc.

The intake strokes of the power supply system are shifted by 270 degrees, making the engine sound reminiscent of the sound of a six-cylinder engine. Newly designed mufflers and cast wheels instead of spoked ones give the motorcycle a modern twist.

The company also produces a sports version of this model - the Triumph Speedmaster, which has a powerful double-disc brake on the front wheel.

Another model with a two-cylinder engine is the Triumph Thruxton 900, made in caferacer style. Thruxton is named after the English race track of the same name.

And the whole appearance of the motorcycle is reminiscent of racing motorcycles of the last century - low handlebars, tail fairing and unusual shape of mufflers.

The series of retro motorcycles also includes another model based on the Triumph Bonneville - the Triumph Scrambler, also a very unique model from the middle of the last century.

The company is constantly developing, thanks to which it is still an elite manufacturer of motorcycles with millions of fans around the world.

The range of motorcycles is constantly expanding and in 2013, at the EICMA motorcycle show, Triumph presented a number of new and modernized models:

  • Triumph Speed Triple;
  • Triumph Street Triple;
  • Triumph Bonneville T100;
  • Triumph Scrambler;
  • Triumph Thruxton;
  • Triumph America LT;
  • Triumph Tiger 800XC Special Edition;
  • Triumph Speedmaster;
  • Triumph Thunderbird Commander.

Choosing a motorcycle is a very serious and responsible undertaking. When choosing a motorcycle, you need to decide where and how you will use it. It's unlikely that you plan to become a racer, and even if so, then a powerful sports bike is not for beginners.

Chopper - a motorcycle to impress

If this aspect is very important to you, then your choice may be Triumph America or Triumph America LT - a stylish motorcycle that even people who are far from motorcycles pay attention to. Motorcycles from the Triumph Speedmaster and Triumph Thunderbird series look very good

Classic motorcycles from the Triumph Bonneville series remain very close to this style.

Motorcycles from the Triumph Speedmaster and Triumph Thunderbird series look very good. Classic motorcycles from the Triumph Bonneville series remain very close to this style.

For lovers of off-road riding, the Triumph Speed Triple or Triumph Street Triple series motorcycles are suitable. They are also not bad when driving around the city - they are sort of universal cars.

When choosing a motorcycle, you need to realistically evaluate your physical characteristics with the characteristics of the motorcycle. If you weigh 60 kilograms, the Triumph Rocet III, which weighs 320 kilograms, is unlikely to suit you.

You need to look for exactly your model, in terms of power, weight, and ease of fit. We will try to answer specific questions about each motorcycle model on our website.
