Verdict
A generation grew up on this motorcycle and it is impossible to deny its contribution to the life of the domestic motorcycle industry. Therefore, no matter how many minuses or pluses this motorcycle has, it is worth preserving those released copies and treating them with special warmth and care. After all, this is already part of our history.
The motorcycle was produced by the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant from 1987 to 2008.
Over the 20 years of production, the basic concept of the motorcycle has remained the same as what the developers intended - it is a middle-class motorcycle designed for travel on public roads, regardless of the type of surface.
If necessary, it was possible to change the adjustment of the rear suspension of the motorcycle for comfortable movement in off-road conditions. The motorcycle had a side trailer, which allowed it to carry one more passenger. Although in rural areas the “cradle” was often used as a body for various types of cargo.
Repair and tuning
Repair
Over the long period of production, the IZH Planet-5 motorcycle has acquired a large army of fans who have developed methods for repairing and modernizing almost any module.
The motorcycle has clearly established itself as an unpretentious vehicle. However, it had to be repaired quite often, although this does not require special skills. It's all about the resource of spare parts and improper care of the motorcycle. Often the motorcycle is used in rural areas without an air filter and with low-quality oil. So for fans of this technology, it will not be a surprise to replace the piston once a season.
In the first models, the malfunction of the motorcycle's electrical circuit progressed, which consisted mainly of poor-quality terminal connections and oxidation of the battery contacts. Therefore, popular technical magazines of those years quickly published the electrical circuit diagram of the IZH Planet-5 motorcycle.

The design of the model itself was not particularly intricate or complex, which allowed even a non-specialist to understand its structure.

Spare parts
The motorcycle is unpretentious and does not require close attention. The main complaints are caused by the poor quality of the batteries and the rapid failure of the ignition switch. But, despite the fact that the model has not been produced for more than 7 years, spare parts are available to the average owner. Thus, the website zapchasti-izh.ru presents a wide list of parts necessary for repairs of any complexity. For example, an ignition switch costs about $2.
Tuning
An army of fans of the reliable IZH Planet-5 motorcycle model tried in every possible way to change its appearance in order to stand out from the crowd and adapt it as much as possible to their taste:

Engine IZH Jupiter-5-03
The IZ Jupiter-5 liquid-cooled engine differs favorably from counter-air cooling in that it can operate for a long time in extreme mode at high ambient temperatures. This allows use in stationary installations without external airflow. At the same time, the technical, economic and environmental parameters of the motorcycle are increased.
Piston water cooling of the motorcycle IZH Jupiter-5-03 (IZH 6.113-03): 1 – generator cover; 2 – right crankcase cover; 3 – generator; 4 – seal with right cover; 5 – right crankshaft; 6 – right half of the crankcase; 7 – flywheel; 8 – crankshaft seal; 9 – crank chamber cover; 10 – left crankshaft; 11 – left seal; 12 – right half of the crankcase; 13 – crankshaft sprocket; 14 – right crankcase cover; 15 – water pump; 16 – cylinder; 17 – spark plug; 18 – cylinder head; 19 – piston; 20 – connecting rod.
The IZ Jupiter-5-03 liquid cooling system with forced liquid circulation includes: - special cylinders and cylinder heads with cavities for liquid circulation; — cylinder head covers; - manifold with thermostat; — water pump with drive; — a radiator with an expansion tank and steam-air valves in the radiator cap; — a fan with an electric motor and a thermal relay for turning on the fan; — thermostatic switch for overheating warning indicator; — flexible connecting hoses and clamps for their fastening.
The liquid-cooled Jupiter-5-03 engine has pistons, piston rings and a crankshaft that are not interchangeable with the air-cooled engine, along the hole in the upper connecting rod head, into which a special needle bearing is installed.
Antifreeze A40 M (TOSOL) is recommended as a coolant for IZ Jupiter-5-03. It is allowed to use water for a short time, preferably boiled, without allowing it to freeze. Using water in the system leads to premature wear of water pump parts.
Cooling system of the motorcycle IZH Jupiter-5-03 (IZH 6.113-03): 1 – thermal relay; 2 – fan with casing; 3 – collector assembly; 4 – supply hose; 5 – outlet pipe; 6 – carburetor; 7 – upper pipe of the chain cover; 8 – lower pipe of the chain cover; 9 – gearbox drain plug; 10 – flywheel hatch cover; 11 – flywheel hatch gasket; 12 – flywheel cavity plug; 13 – supply hose; 14 – mounting damper; 15 – hose clamp; 16 – radiator protection; 17 – radiator; 18 – plug.
The IZ Jupiter-5-03 cooling system operates in automatic mode, maintaining the liquid temperature within 80...90 degrees. During the warm-up period of a cold engine, the thermostat valves are closed, antifreeze circulates through a small hole in the manifold, having a limiting flow rate and flow rate. When heated to 80 degrees, the thermostat valve opens, reducing resistance to the flow of antifreeze, increasing the speed and thereby increasing the cooling efficiency.
The fan motor turns on at an antifreeze temperature of 92 degrees and turns off at a temperature of 87 degrees.
When the liquid is heated to a temperature of 98...104 degrees, the temperature sensor turns on the overheating indicator on the motorcycle instrument panel.
Safety valves in the radiator plug regulate excess pressure of 0.05 MPa and vacuum of 0.012 MPa.
The increased coefficient of volumetric expansion of antifreeze is compensated by an expansion tank connected by a tube to the radiator.
Coolant is poured into the radiator through the neck until the upper tubes are recessed (filling capacity 2.1 liters). Draining the fluid through the drain holes in the engine with the radiator cap removed.
We are constructing a cross-country motorcycle based on Izh Planet 4
The idea of creating a cross-country motorcycle appeared a long time ago; simply buying a good Japanese motorcycle is not interesting, and it is very expensive, so it was decided to use a domestically produced motorcycle as a donor. The choice was between Izh Planet and Izh Jupiter. Heavy motorcycles such as the Ural and Dnepr were immediately discarded. Later the choice fell on Izh Planet, since the single-cylinder engine of this unit produces good torque at low speeds. And spare parts, almost everything, can be found in stores.
This motorcycle was purchased as the basis of the project. All subsequent work began on the basis of its frame. The condition of all the components was not impressive, so the motorcycle was completely disassembled.
Disassembly. Disassembly took only an evening, since there was almost nothing to disassemble. Everything attached to the motorcycle was removed. Then it came to the chassis and engine.
Appeared before us in all its glory.
Working with the engine.
The engine was completely disassembled and all washed. All seals in the engine were replaced. Also, all bearings were selected from Japanese counterparts; only the roller bearings of the crankshaft remained domestic.
A new Soviet-made piston engine was purchased (it took a lot of effort to find such a rarity). The gear pair of the first gear was supplied from Izh Planet 2, as it has a large gear ratio to obtain more torque. For the same reason, a leading star with a number of teeth of 16 was supplied. This is the smallest number of the produced series. A new chain, new clutch rings and a clutch basket with a double-row chain were also installed. The engine was assembled and all bolt holes were sealed with sealant to prevent oil leaks (domestic engines like to drip oil onto the asphalt). The rear engine mounts to the frame were also strengthened by welding plates onto the main mounts.
Liquid cooling.
It was decided to install liquid cooling on the motorcycle because it will be used for cross-country racing and will often have to work at maximum speed. Air cooling performs its role well if the motorcycle is used with a cradle, and at a normal riding pace. This option was not suitable here. An article was found on the Internet on installing a cylinder on an Izh Planet from the PD10 Starting Engine. According to historical data, it was developed on the basis of the Planet engine, so the mountings are completely identical. All that remained was to solve the problem of the difference in power of these engines. It was solved by installing a Carburetor from Izh Planet K68I. And boring of inlet and outlet channels, as well as purge windows.
Here you see a scan of the combination of the Izh Planet cylinder and the cylinder from PD10. Green indicates the layer of metal that needs to be removed. After modification, the cylinder is placed on the engine, it will work in tandem with a stove radiator from a VAZ 2105. An electric pump for additional heating from a Gazelle car will be installed, it will be controlled by a temperature sensor from a VAZ 2108/09 through a relay. The expansion barrel will be selected according to the volume required liquids.
Remaining improvements:
The frame was cleaned, primed and painted black (well, that's how I wanted it). The rear end has been re-welded to reduce weight and increase ground clearance.
The side covers for the battery and tool have been removed. The front fork was rebuilt. but later a plug was purchased from Izh Planet Sport, it will be installed. Also from Planet Sport a front wheel with a larger radius will be installed. Both tires are supplied with mud, the rear is R18, Czech-made BARUM, the front is R19, domestically produced. The muffler will be manufactured manually, due to the impossibility of installing a standard one and its low efficiency. The front and rear fenders will come from a Kawasaki TTR250 motorcycle.
Now work on the motorcycle has paused a bit, but will continue in the near future. By spring, the motorcycle will leave the garage under its own power.
Thanks everyone for your attention.
If anyone is interested, I’ll tell you in more detail what I did and how.
Specifications
The main technical characteristics of the IZH Planet-5 motorcycle are:
- engine – single-cylinder two-stroke with a volume of 350 cubic centimeters, the maximum developed power reaches 20 horsepower at 4850 rpm;
- air cooling system is standard for most domestic motorcycles;
- The engine lubrication system is combined with the fuel system;
- the weight of the unloaded motorcycle is 165 kg;
- the maximum load of the motorcycle without a sidecar is 150 kg and another 20 can be put on the trunk;
- maximum speed 120 kilometers per hour;
- Fuel consumption at a speed of 90 kilometers per hour is 5 liters, at 60 it drops to 4;
- The fuel used is AI-76 gasoline with oil (for 1 part oil, 25 parts gasoline).
I would especially like to dwell on the engine of the model. It turned out to be extremely successful and unpretentious. In later modifications of the motorcycle, the manufacturer replaced the joint lubrication system with a separate one, in which the main link was the oil pump. The device made it possible to switch the lubrication mode depending on the load characteristics of the engine in a ratio of 1 to 25 or 1 to 100. To meter the fuel supply and prepare the gasoline mixture, a K-62I carburetor was used, which was replaced by the K-65I in later modifications. The gearbox is made according to a three-shaft design in a single housing with the engine.
The frame of the IZH Planet 5 motorcycle is welded, consisting of hollow thick-walled tubes. The front suspension is dependent, telescopic, which allows you to feel quite comfortable on rough terrain. The rear suspension is independent with hydraulic shock absorbers and a working spring.
