Honda Super Dio AF-27/28 scooter review

The Japanese-made Honda Dio 27 scooter has gained wide popularity around the world, including in Russia. The progenitor of the modification in question was released back in the late eighties of the last century. Stylish design and excellent driving performance are the main reasons for the popularity of this moped. At the same time, a driver’s license is not required to operate the equipment, since the volume of the power unit does not exceed fifty “cubes”. Over more than two and a half decades of production, the scooter was constantly improved, equipped with new lighting elements, improved suspension and upgraded brakes.

History of creation

The Honda Dio 27 moped was created on the basis of the predecessor of the eighteenth series and became the basis for several subsequent generations in its class. The modification was launched into mass production in 1992, but before that, Japanese designers produced scooters under the designations 18/25. The developers were faced with the task of creating a two-wheeled motor vehicle that would be convenient and economical to move around the city.

However, the released model was quite suitable for driving on country roads and over long distances. Buyers were simply fascinated by the unusual design, as well as the characteristics of the moped. Due to the great excitement, the manufacturer increased mass production. In addition, modifications are being created aimed at Western Europe and Asia.

Production Features

The Honda Dio 27 scooter was in such demand that at first there were problems with exports, since the Japanese market also needed an economical, practical and convenient two-wheeled vehicle. After part of the production facilities were built in Taiwan, the production of cars increased significantly, and they ceased to be in short supply.

The designers experimented with the type of braking system, after which they chose a more modern disc unit. Several limited edition mopeds were produced, which were distinguished by a completely different dashboard design and bright, unusual body colors.

Specifications

The scooter has a Japanese engine with a volume of 49.9 cm3 and a power of 7 hp, the maximum speed of which is 60 km/h. Fuel consumption in moderate mode does not exceed 2-2.5 l/100 km. Of course, liquid cooling is not provided here, since the scooter is intended for the city, and not for long trips. A three-speed CVT gearbox is installed as a transmission.

In general, the Honda Dio 27 scooter is an excellent vehicle for the city and outdoor trips. Thanks to the reliable engine from the Japanese company Honda, you don't have to worry about getting stuck in the middle of the road. This is why most people choose this scooter.

"Honda Dio AF 27"

The vehicle in question is produced on the basis of the outdated modification “AF 18”. The power plant remains the same, but the brakes, suspension, steering and exterior design have been restyled.

The main difference between the twenty-seventh series scooter and its predecessor is its increased dimensions. In addition, a steering wheel trunk appeared, the instrument panel was transformed, which was equipped with additional indicators and given a new shape.

The Honda Dio AF 27 scooter has several main modifications, namely:

  1. The SR model is equipped with a front disc brake, a rear drum brake and a forced engine with increased power, but without changing the displacement.
  2. The ZX series is made in a sporty style, has a larger front disc brake, a rear spoiler, a deep-set brake light and a new muffler.
  3. XR Baja - has pronounced characteristics of light Enduro motorcycles, has updated optics, wind protection for hands and a motorcycle steering bar.

Honda Super Dio AF-27/28 scooter review

The second generation scooters - Honda Super Dio (AF-27) - began to be produced in 1990. They differed little from the previous model Dio AF-18 - except in design. Even the AF18E engine remained almost unchanged.

Three main variants of the Super Dio were produced: the basic AF-27 model with drum brakes and an AF18E engine, the AF-28 SR model with a front disc brake and an uprated AF18E engine, and the AF-28 ZX model - all the same, plus instead of a trunk she had a spoiler with a brake light.

Honda scooters of the Super Dio series continued to be produced until 1999. At a certain period, this design was produced under the name Dio Fit, with a new design of plastic body kit and headlights.

Advantages and disadvantages

The Honda Super Dio scooter is one of the most popular and beloved models among scooterists. The secret of success is a simple and reliable design, which has already been well tested on the previous Dio AF-18 model. The successful design is still considered quite modern to this day.

As mentioned, the design of the AF-27 is not much different from the AF-18. The slightly updated AF18E engine is almost completely identical to the previous one - the only difference is the crankshaft diameter. The brake system also remains unchanged.

The engine easily develops 60-65 km/h, although if the components are in good condition, the scooter can be accelerated to 70 km/h. The AF-28 switch has a speed limiter, so you can only reach 70 km/h after replacing the switch.

Despite the fact that the AF-27/28 is designed to carry one person, the engine power is enough for two. The unpretentious engine runs on any gasoline, even 80 is suitable for it, although, of course, it is better to fill it with 95. Fuel consumption under ideal conditions is about 2.5 l/100 km.

The Super Dio scooter can carry more things than its predecessor. The underseat storage area has been enlarged by relocating the battery, and a front pocket has also been added. On the AF-28 ZX model, the rear trunk is replaced by a spoiler with an LED brake light.

Honda scooters are unpretentious to road conditions and are well protected from dust and water getting into the engine. The muffler does not suffer damage from curbs or speed bumps - either the bottom or the running board takes the blow.

The suspension also remains structurally the same, which means that the AF-27/28 will feel great in the city. The scooter maneuvers wonderfully in traffic jams, and its element is smooth asphalt. Of course, if necessary, you can ride on dirt roads, although this is no longer very comfortable.

The AF-28's front disc brake is especially effective on asphalt surfaces.

Spare parts for Super Dio are still produced today, so if necessary, it is easy to buy any part. As always, these scooters are very repairable. The vertical arrangement of the cylinder in the engine allows access to the piston group without removing the engine.

The scooters of the Honda Super Dio AF-27/28 family are extremely comfortable and reliable in operation, so their owners deservedly love them.

Pleasant value for money. One of the most recognized scooters in Russia. Well suited for both the country house and the city. The design, which has already become a classic, will appeal to both the elderly and young people. The scooter is well equipped and the quality of the parts speaks for itself. Tuning example: When operating two-stroke engines, the exhaust gas exhaust system plays an important role. When the exhaust tract is clogged with pieces of soot and deposits, we will have a significant drop in power, and, as it happened to me once, right up to a complete loss of traction.

Let's start with the exhaust pipe of the Honda dio af 27. Main characteristics: Year of sale of the Honda dio af 27 scooter: 2000 Engine displacement: 49 cc. Power (hp): 6.8 Maximum speed: 50 km per hour Number of seats: 2 Description: Reliable, inexpensive scooter. Well balanced, great for beginners thanks to its excellent handling, light weight and complete predictability. You just shouldn’t put low-quality oil into your scooter; it smokes a lot and quickly leads to clogging of the exhaust pipe. As a result, at midnight, about 10 km, the Honda dio af 27 moped pushed me home, and not he pushed me as planned. So, a Leo Vinci SP3 sports exhaust system was purchased, characterized by an increase in power in all speed ranges, and a low price of 80 euros. After the onset of full spring and the installation of SP3, a good increase in power was really noticeable. Complete with lightweight rollers, after 15 km/h we have remarkable acceleration dynamics - you will have no equal in competitions at traffic lights. I have not yet studied the effect on maximum speed, as I am currently carrying out further improvements. Among the side effects of tuning the Honda dio af 27, after the same limit of 15 km/h, the pipe begins to work according to the resonance principle and adds a slight vibration to the scooter, but apparently you should not be afraid of this.

The Honda Dio scooter is probably the most popular scooter nowadays. This device accounts for about 30% of the entire Japanese used scooter market. Of the entire range of Honda Dio scooters, namely af-18, af-27, af-28, af-24, af-35, af-56, af-62, the most optimal for our market in terms of price-quality ratio is the Honda model Dio af-34. In general, it was this model that brought Honda scooters a step ahead compared to their competitors, blowing up the market with a new wave in 1994. All the engineers' calculations down to the smallest detail were carried out ideally; in fact, the model was completely redesigned in comparison with its younger brother, Dio af-27, adopting only the best features.

Like the previous model, this one has an incredibly rigid frame, something no other competing scooter can offer. I have not seen a single Honda Dio scooter with a skewed frame in parallel with the shock absorber, that is, on many Chinese scooters, you can see that the side of the rear of the scooter that is not supported by the shock absorber bends down under load. It is a rigid frame and incredibly high quality the engine made this model famous.

A separate word about plastic, the ideal quality of plastic and joints does not change over the years, there are scooters from 1994 that are already 17 years old, with a perfect fit of the joints, which would be impossible with the slightest deformation of the frame. This scooter is ideal for the city, for traveling alone, even over long distances, and even if any breakdowns occur, and

you have repair skills, you can fix everything on the road, since the device is very well thought out in terms of easy accessibility of all important components. It should be mentioned that you will never have problems with spare parts, specifically for the Honda Dio af-18-27, and af- 34 on store shelves you will find the widest range of parts and cladding. And this is a very important point when choosing a scooter. Please note that spare parts for Dioaf-34 do not fit from its younger brother, so when purchasing, please check your Honda Dio model. But this device is not without its drawbacks. A very capricious front fork that requires repairs every season. But why didn’t the engineers think through such an obvious point, you might say. Everything is quite simple, in Japan, for which this scooter was produced, the roads are ideal and clean. Dust on the roads is washed away every day using special equipment, and all this is provided for by the Japanese authorities. This procedure has been worked out for years, so the engineers did not think about such extreme conditions in which our scooters are found. Constant potholes on the roads, constant mud, and you can also imagine what the scooter fork goes through in the countryside. Constant extreme loads on the fork wear out the anthers, dirt gets into the stays, which leads to rapid wear of the fork parts and jamming. After this, the front shock absorber does not perform its functions in principle, and you feel with your hands all the unevenness of our roads. Sometimes this is the only minus of this scooter, but it’s only a minus for us, in Japan it’s simply not relevant. An excellent choice for understanding buyers. At the moment, if I had a choice of a single-seater scooter under 50 cc, I would choose the Honda Dio af-34. Perhaps over time, the four-stroke liquid-cooled Af-56 model will displace this model in our market, but still it will not repeat all the achievements of the Af-34 model. Don't go for speed and dynamics at the expense of durability and safety.

The history of production of the model of the same name, Honda began in the 80s, with the Dio-18. It was powered by a reliable and unpretentious two-stroke AF18 engine, which had been on the assembly line for more than a decade, establishing itself as a powerful and reliable unit that did not cause problems when finding spare parts or repairs. So today we got to test, in general, an unremarkable example of Japanese scooter manufacturing. Honda brand device, model Dio 62. History of production of the model of the same name, Honda began in the 80s, with Dio-18. It was powered by a reliable and unpretentious two-stroke AF18 engine, which had been on the assembly line for more than a decade, establishing itself as a powerful and reliable unit that did not cause problems when finding spare parts or repairs. The model we tested is more modern: a four-stroke engine, famous for its efficiency and very quiet and smooth operation, and a fresh appearance. But in general, the essence of the model has not changed much over the many years of production: the main emphasis is on build quality (you can’t argue with that: all panels fit smoothly, the plastic is pleasant to the touch, does not creak), simplicity of design (no pseudo-ABS or alarms) and legendary Honda reliability. So, let's take a closer look at the scooter. Wheels are standard size for the Japanese - 10 inches, drum brakes, a large, easy-to-read speedometer marked up to 60 km/h, crystal optics, a wide seat and an ignition switch with built-in anti-theft. Turning the key to the left will open the luggage compartment under the seat; its capacity is such that you can put any helmet and there will still be room left - this is a big plus.

Well, it's time to try out the scooter on the go. Insert the key into the ignition and press the start button. Yeah, this is not a two-stroke: the engine is practically inaudible, vibrations are not felt, idling is smooth. The seat is quite comfortable, wide and soft. There is enough legroom despite its small size. On the move the scooter is also quite good. I expected worse acceleration dynamics (after all, 4-stroke engines have not yet caught up with the power of their 2-stroke counterparts). In fact, the Honda jumps briskly and smoothly, without dips or catches, accelerates the scooter to 60 km/h. It’s already a bit scary; the quality of our roads leaves much to be desired. But even at speeds close to maximum, the scooter handles quite well; cornering, thanks to its low weight, is a pleasure; the brakes are very tenacious (which is surprising, considering that they are drum). To sum up today's test, we can say that the Honda Dio is a high-quality and unpretentious scooter for those who do not need large wheels, alarms, abs and other bells and whistles. This is a workhorse for those who want to own a real Japanese scooter.

Running elements

The Japanese scooter "Honda Dio 27" is equipped with smooth gear shifting, starts moving without jerking, picks up speed dynamically and has soft shock absorption. It carries not only the driver, but also the passenger without any problems. Thanks to these characteristics, the scope of use of the moped is significantly expanded - from trips to the store to use in the delivery of flowers or fast food.

Chassis parameters:

  • front suspension unit - telescopic fork and side shock absorber with lever;
  • a similar rear block is of the articulated-pendulum type with a spring shock absorber;
  • brakes (front/rear) – disc with caliper/drum unit;
  • wheels – 3.00/10 inches.

AF-27 Model Review

We can say that the Honda Dio 27 is a restyling of the af-18 model, because the appearance and technical components have remained virtually unchanged.
But still, some changes have occurred; the scooter is now equipped with a full-size compartment for a helmet in the central trunk; in addition to the helmet, it is convenient to store many small items there.

In addition, it uses a new dual-focus head optic for the slim type, integrated with a tilt-angle lens (Kirpton 35/30W gas actuation valve), and a large rear combination lamp integrated into the body.

Engineers have developed measures such as the layout of the fuel tank under the floor, as well as the large capacity (4 → 5 l) petrol tank, providing ample space in the trunk, it is convenient and functional.

In addition, an internal stand is equipped on the inside of the front panel as standard, making it easy to use in everyday life, providing a seat height (700mm) with good legs and generous space.

Honda Dio 27

The Honda Dio 27 engine is air cooled, two cycle and single 50cc cylinder. See Maximum power output of 6.8PS/7.00rpm, coupled with a continuously variable transmission (Vmatic), provides smooth and powerful output characteristics from low to mid-speed, providing both sportiness and ease of handling in urban environments.

The suspension consists of installed sports telescopic shock absorbers. The front and rear wheels are equipped with 10-inch tubeless tires (3.00 - 10 42 J) and a large diameter brake of 95 mm, providing an easy and comfortable ride.

The scooter is also equipped from the factory with:

  • A large capacity fuel tank (5.0 L) and an oil tank (1.2 L) are installed.
  • Equipped with a turn signal indicator which displays the turn signal indicator with a lamp inside the meter.
  • The turn signal switch is equipped with a press, cancel and turn indicator that is automatically canceled by pressing only after activation.
  • Maintenance-free battery, no need to replenish water.

Honda Dio 27 has three trim levels, this is the basic Super Dio which is equipped with drum brakes, the next modification is SR, it was already equipped with disc brakes. ZX, as in the case of the Honda Dio 35, is a sports modification that includes a spoiler, a chrome muffler, a more powerful engine and disc brakes.

There is another interesting version called Honda Dio 27 Baja, it is characterized by a steering wheel from the Honda XR250 Baja, handle pads, in general it is an enduro scooter.

Baja version

In summary, the Honda Dio 27 is a great basic scooter that is easy to handle, stylish, functional and comfortable.

Interesting Facts

The developers didn't stop there. Next, a model with an electric motor was released, which was equipped with alkaline batteries. They are located in the compartment where the fuel tank was previously located. The battery is charged from a standard network. The scooter was produced for domestic consumption and was not exported.

Since the mid-nineties of the last century, the Honda Dio 27 moped has been equipped with a special anti-theft system. It is a special canopy that hides the ignition switch. This solution made it possible to reduce the percentage of thefts, since opening the protection without special tools is quite problematic. To unlock the curtain, you need to enter a digital code known to the owner. However, there were also incidents: if the code was forgotten, it was necessary to contact a special service and turn off the entire system.

What consumers say

Users of the moped in question note excellent driving performance, soft suspension combined with a rigid, informative frame, which allows you to move freely on country roads.

Consumers also consider the following positive aspects:

  • ease of operation, information display;
  • durable and unpretentious power unit;
  • beautiful design;
  • good load capacity along with decent speed;
  • high quality plastic, which does not darken over the years and does not change shape even at the joints.

Among the shortcomings, owners note the capricious front fork, which often requires repair, especially after a long drive on domestic roads. Some users complain about the high cost of consumable parts, fortunately they do not break down so often. It is quite possible to purchase spare parts on order or from official dealers, but you will have to be patient while waiting for delivery. Perhaps these are the main disadvantages of this moped, if you do not take into account the wishes of a certain category of owners who prefer high speeds. It should be noted that the scooter was developed as a unit for urban movement and is unlikely to be suitable for cross-country racing.
