Road classic BMW R1150

Model class : tourist.

Years of production/sales: 2001-2004

BMW R1150RT model appeared in January 2001 as the successor to the BMW R1100RT. The new model receives a number of significant improvements and changes:

  • Appearance : the design of plastic and wheel rims is changing.
  • Technical part : new 1130 cc engine. cm (95 hp, 100 Nm); new braking system with larger diameter front discs and integral (combined) ABS; more standard tire size (all 17') and wheels - from the BMW R1100S; hydraulic clutch; 6-speed gearbox.

Otherwise, the BMW R1150RT has the same features as previous BMW R-series motorcycles: a 2-cylinder boxer air-oil-cooled engine, a cardan drive and proprietary Telelever and Paralever suspensions.

The BMW R1150RT model is also distinguished by built-in touring options, such as an electrically adjustable windshield, adjustable seat height, fog lights, side cases + mounts for the central case, audio system, two 12V sockets, heated grips, airflow adjustments, etc.

Integral ABS (or 2nd generation ABS), installed on all flagship BMW motorcycles since 2001, was available in two versions on the BMW R1150RT - partial and fully integral ABS. The latter differs in that, regardless of which brake is used, front or rear, both wheels of the motorcycle are automatically braked.

The BMW R1150RT model existed on the assembly line until 2005, after which it was replaced by the BMW R1200RT. Along with the R1150RT model, there was a younger version of the BMW R850RT on the market, built on a single base.

A little history

Production started in 2001, and very soon the first batch went on sale. In 2002, the motorcycle began to be equipped with immobilizers and an individual chip key. Special improvements were made to the braking system, which, from an analogue one, became the most developed and advanced at the time of commissioning. 2003 - two spark plugs were installed on each cylinder and a year later production was closed. The model was unfortunately discontinued after three years of existence, as it was considered obsolete. The main components and design features migrated to the daughter model R1200RT

Road classic BMW R1150

The BMW R1150 series of motorcycles replaced the morally and technically outdated R1100. The latter became the basis of the motorcycle, which was first presented to consumers in 1999, and its sales started in 2000.

BMW R1150 model range

Over the 6 short years of production of the motorcycle, it was presented in only two models, although both the basic and improved versions were restyled. R1150 was sold in showrooms in two versions:

  • The basic BMW R1150R was produced from 2000 to 2006. It's an unremarkable version of a road bike with moderate electronics and excellent mechanicals.
  • The improved BMW R1150R Rockster was produced from 2003 to 2005. The appearance has undergone changes (new headlights, like in the BMW R1150GS, special coloring with blue elements, as well as a modernized dashboard). Among the technical features it is worth noting: power 87 hp, two spark plugs per cylinder, change in gearbox ratio and change in rear wheel size to 17”.

Both models were extremely popular among users, although starting from 2005, the basic configuration was more in demand. Motorcyclists noted that some changes in the technical and external parts after the restyling of the Rockster model made it less attractive.

Comparison with direct competitors

The beginning of the 2000s was rich in the release of new units. The manufacturer itself created a stir around the models, releasing new versions of the S1100 series motorcycles year after year. This is how the BMW R 1150 RS, R 1150 RT, R1150 R and R 1150 GS were born. According to motorists, BMW created competition with itself, which may have had a negative impact on sales. Because of this, they were sold for a limited amount of time, because they were all very similar to each other, although they belonged to different types.

In practice, the R 1150 series had no internal competitors, because each motorcycle had a different purpose. For example, the BMW R 1150 RS is a sports model, the R 1150 R is a road bike, etc. Despite the statement of motorcyclists, the direct analogue and main competitor of BMW were Yamaha models. They had more advanced electronics, but were out of the price segment. At the same time, both BMW and Yamaha carried out excellent advertising campaigns, which caused a “boom” in the popularity of motorcycles in the early 2000s.

History of the BMW R1150

In the development of the R1150, we can highlight just a few main points that became key in the “life” and development of the motorcycle:

  • year 2000. Start of sales.
  • 2003 The first and only modification called Rockster went on sale.
  • 2005 year. End date for production and sale of the improved motorcycle model.
  • 2006 End date of sales and re-release in a new guise. New to the road motorcycle market is the BMW R 1200 R.

For connoisseurs of high quality motorcycles and their individuality, manufacturers also offered some “special” parts.

Tuning BMW R1150 through the eyes of users

The BMW R 1150 R is not the most tuned model. Users talk about its practicality and excellent build quality, but the ability to customize it was limited. In the early 2000s, the only things dealers could offer customers were decorative trims and travel bags, which were not included. It was not possible to technically and functionally rework the model.

On thematic forums, the main topic of discussion was the possibility of repairing and tuning motorcycles. Most often, users attributed the inability to order additional equipment as a disadvantage. Although the popularity of tuning began to be observed after the end of the sale of the model.

Technical features of the BMW R1150

Technically, the model received excellent mechanical equipment; some changes became a real breakthrough in mechanical engineering. R 1150 has the following technical parameters:

  1. Engine power 85 hp (87 hp in Rockster version).
  2. Electronic ignition type, like in flagship motorcycles of the 2000s.
  3. Six-speed gearbox.
  4. 17" wheels with standard tires: 120/70 and 170/60 (180/55 for the Rockster model).
  5. Fuel consumption is 4.6–5.7 l/100 km. Fuel consumption directly depends on driving speed. As in all models with a similar injection system and engine.

Even a decade later, the R1150R remains relevant. Modern models of road motorcycles are mostly based on this series of motorcycles.

Some innovations

In the technical part of the motorcycle, the brake system was modernized, and a new engine with a displacement of 1130 cm3 with combined ABS and a six-speed gearbox was installed. The BMW R1150RT received all the notable features of the R series, including a cardan drive and the signature brainchild of Paralever and Telelever. The built-in ability to adjust the windshield, seat, fog lights, side cases and two outlets are also important. Where would modern technology be without heated handles?

The second generation ABS is an integral system, and this model was among the first to receive this technology in full or partial implementation. How does this system work? It is responsible for simultaneously braking two wheels, regardless of whether the front or rear brake is used.

BMW R1150RT

Oh, what a long time to write here!!!

Okay,...... about six months ago, I came to the conclusion that it was time to change my views on motorcycles and finally get a worthy replacement for my “Uralist” motorcycle, at first I stuck with the Honda “Pan Europe”, but as I studied this motorcycle I quickly switched towards BI EM DOUBLE, in particular, at first I set my sights on the BMW R1100RT, but by the time I had saved up the amount for the purchase, I realized that I could handle a device that was more interesting to me, namely the BMW R1150RT. I purchased it with the help of this site https://sempermoto.ru/ and a good, responsive person named Alexander Sosnin, and I must say I am absolutely satisfied and if anything, I definitely recommend it, in my particular case everything went at the highest level.

So, I transferred the money to Alexander in Vladivostok, and then we began to bargain for various motorcycles at an auction in Japan, and in the end we won this lot.

Next, the motorboat was assigned to ferry from Japan to Vladivostok by Alexander’s Japanese partners.

Afterwards Alexander met him in Vladivostok and sent him a transport to me in Moscow

And here I am at the Yaroslavl station receiving my parcel

I unloaded in the workshop at work and began to unpack, I’ll immediately note the good packaging of the whole thing. The transport company worked at the HIGHEST, for some reason I didn’t doubt it! :good: respect to Logistic Force.

Well, then the most interesting thing was that our workers came running and let’s torment me with their wishes (... let’s start, what is this, and what is this, and did you buy this, and for how much......) in short, everything is as always, I even had to raise one voice when, he began to rustle his hands over the controls. .. Well, I can’t stand this, you have to ask first... :fool:, that’s what I was taught.

As a result, I began to disassemble the motor, firstly, so that I could understand what I was dealing with, secondly, I blew it out with air, otherwise it was all sweaty from moving, put the battery on charge, threw out the standard place of the original radio, dismantled the Japanese navigator, it doesn’t suit me Well, I’ll be driving with a tablet, the steering wheel was not tightened yet.:) Among the amenities: rolleyes:, this is a complete set of repair keys, and a service book. After charging the battery, I started it, I must say the Japanese “cheated” the motor, because... It starts from the side stand, which shouldn't happen! . Next, I will arrange a complete maintenance for him with passion.

What’s interesting is that it looks like they didn’t really mess with the bike, it’s like it’s driving and okay, the throttle position sensor has an intact factory mark,……. summary, we will completely go through the carbs, clean and tune them!

So far I've got a neodymium magnet on the steering wheel to hold the key fob

Next are plans for upgrading the motorcycle options for which I have already purchased goodies: yahoo:

A little about the features of the motorcycle

Due to the fact that the R-series was one of the most productive, which was complemented by all sorts of innovative products from the German manufacturer. By the way, as BMW[/anchor] states, its brainchild has a consumption of up to 5.6 liters per km. Moreover, the cost of a not so “ancient” model on the secondary market is at least 250,000 in more or less condition. If you want to acquire a better fortune, then you will have to fork out accordingly, but the money spent on the purchase of a German brainchild will not be in vain. You will be able to get real pleasure from driving and will not have to send your motorcycle for repairs every time.

On the symbolic date of February 20, 2020, I opened the season with the purchase of a new motorcycle.:) Moreover, I didn’t go after it to the closest Moscow region - to Yegoryevsk, from where I decided that I would drive it under my own power without any tow trucks. It's +8 outside, the roads are dry, the sun is warm - beautiful! The funny thing is that all my life I loudly shouted “BMW - ha... obviously!” and then I was inspired to take it. Everyone goes crazy in their own way!:)

The roads in Moscow, of course, were dry, and even the Yegoryevskaya highway shone with dry asphalt... but from the seller’s house to the asphalt it was a kilometer away on bare ice. The seller, when I asked him to drive the car out himself, as an experienced driver of a RT-echo, unlike me, who had never even sat in one, he resolutely refused, offering to help me walk next to him and protect him from falling by the passenger handles.

Spreading my legs in different directions, like skis, tightly squeezing what first attracted me to adventure, and then the bench press itself, I moved forward. In past years, there was already a case when I left the garage on the Transalpa in the same way, so I had some kind of experience, although where is TA and where is RT. Well, the eyes were afraid, but the hands did.

After 10 minutes of riding on the asphalt, I had already forgotten about all my fears associated with a new motorcycle for me - an unknown, large, scary beast with an unusual boxer engine, which, when the gas is opened, makes the body of the motorcycle similar to what a dog does when shaking off water after a bath.:) An unusual cardan for me (I’ve had chains all my life), which happily gives a kick in the ass when you boldly open the gas and also a “reverse kick” from the steering wheel in your hands when you sharply close it. In less than ten minutes, I had already gotten used to the motorcycle and forgot about everything... everything except the turn signals! No, I won’t say, as others put it, that it’s just a “pain and a pain,” but after riding for a few days, I’m already used to it, but nevertheless I still think about the process with my head, and don’t do it “automatically.” I got to Moscow, realized that I didn’t want to drive it straight into the garage on such a beautiful sunny day, and went to visit friends.

The next couple of days I took advantage of the weather with sun, 8 degrees of heat and dry roads and joyfully drove around Moscow. I signed up with the traffic police to register on Sunday - February 23rd, whoever goes where, but I have my own holiday! At the traffic police inspector said that today was “RT-x day” - I was not the first on the same model and even the color and year were the same. It's a pity I didn't find my brother. :)

The weather turned bad on Sunday, so I washed the Gray and put it in the garage to wait for a full season, but in the meantime I still need to do some maintenance. I immediately thought that I would call him Gray - and for the color, which is officially listed in the passport as “silver”, and a respectable masculine name, and he is definitely a man, there is no doubt even in appearance, and, especially, when you start him and you will hear its powerful guttural bass. The sound of the Kavasak driver betrayed his sporty nature, he drew pictures of MotoGP in his mind, Transalp’s V-shape evoked associations with a tractor, but here there is such a specific sound that it’s not even a tractor... you know, it reminded me of war films, when they show some kind of heavy bombers flying to bomb targets. With such a menacing, monotonously drawn out, low, guttural bass. But the motorcycle itself gives the impression of absolute friendliness - everything is so comfortable, convenient, thoughtful and well-made, absolute “user-friendly”. Both the comfort of fit and excellent wind protection - for the first time my hands did not freeze at all without heating! The mirrors are closed from the oncoming flow and the air ducts under them direct warm air to the hands. Legs closed, torso closed - at 100 kmh I felt the wind only through the ventilation on the top of the helmet. As my friend and I concluded, RT is a “Goose” in plastic: an ideal combination. As a result, I am very pleased with my “strange” choice for myself and that I settled on it. I hope that he will continue to not disappoint my expectations and first impressions with proper care on my part, and our friendship will be strong for another year, and I will tell you my impressions after time, kilometers and long journeys. Grey. Season 2020. Start…
