Classic models

There are still fierce debates on classification.
After all, many bikes have the same specialization and design features. But everyone agrees on one thing - the classics are suitable for people with both experience and beginners. This is exactly what you should learn to drive on. It is universal, suitable for driving in urban conditions, and does not tire the driver at all over long distances.
In addition, low weight (within 150-250 kilograms), comfortable fit, soft seat, straight steering wheel, telescopic fork, rear shock absorbers contribute to not very fast movement, which guarantees comfort and reliability while riding. The main advantage is easy maintenance and availability of a repair kit. The disadvantages are the lack of fairings and low engine power.

Sportbikes

This is a separate class of motorcycles that can reach fantastic speeds. They are available only to real professionals and truly rich people, as they are quite expensive.

Features of a sportbike include:

  • light weight;
  • powerful four-cylinder engine equipped with oval pistons;
  • the rider's seat in the shape of the letter Z;
  • improved aerodynamic properties;
  • most of the weight is located on the front;
  • high-mounted footrests;
  • the steering wheel, on the contrary, is located quite low;
  • a huge number of electronic gadgets installed on a sportbike.

In order to make a sportbike more advanced, it is necessary to replace the muffler with a tuning one, install sliders, and install reinforced brake hoses.

Travel options

Of course, you need to start with the classics, and then, as you gain experience, you can change the bike to a “universal” one. It received this name because of the ability to travel on it not only along city streets, but also over rough terrain. The advantages of the new generation models are that they are equipped with “electronic” assistants. The ABS anti-lock braking system will facilitate the situation during emergency braking and will prevent wheel locking or, in other cases, slipping of the rear roller tire during drifting.

Let's look at the most popular types of motorcycles.

History of the motorcycle. At the peak of popularity

After the war, veterans returned home and were surprised to find that the country had changed a lot, both economically and socially. It was not easy for them to adapt to civilian life. For some, it was too monotonous after the fury of war. It was difficult for some to have serious relationships with people outside the same military community. Some had to cope with post-traumatic disorder. But regardless of the real reasons, many of these veterans have found solace and a solution to their problems in motorcycles. As a result, there are more people riding motorcycles than ever before. Modern biker culture grew from here. A new generation of motorcyclists emerged who were strikingly different from their predecessors. Organizations that were called outlaw motorcycle clubs grew like mushrooms after rain. The word "outlaw" means that these clubs are not approved by the AMA; there is no criminal element to the term. Bikers from different clubs were distinguished from each other by stripes with different logos, colors and slogans. These distinctive signs originate in military culture. Many outlaw motorcycle clubs used them, but they did not mean anything criminal. However, some motorcycle clubs were not so innocent, on the contrary: they created a reputation for themselves as rebels. They called themselves one percenters (as opposed to the 99% of motorcyclists who belonged to legitimate clubs). This is how criminal biker gangs began to emerge. Many of these terms and principles, outlaw motorcycle clubs, stripes, one percenters, are still used today.

Naked

Characteristic features are the absence of a windshield and plastic cladding. After depowering the engine and removing the plastic, they began to have the following advantages:

  • Due to the reduction in size, they are maximally maneuverable (can pass through thin passages).
  • Access to repair work on the engine, chassis and main elements is not limited.
  • During a fall, the cladding will not be damaged, so repairs will be less expensive.
  • Since there is no windshield, the driver will not be able to reach high speeds, which guarantees a quiet ride and safety.
  • Available to every consumer - minimizing tuning has reduced the costs of the production process.

Cruisers

Cruisers, popularly called cruisers, are motorcycles styled after legendary American cars such as Harley-Davidson or Indian. They are characterized by a low driver's seat and an elongated steering wheel - which forces the driver to sit strictly vertically or, conversely, slightly at an angle, leaning back slightly. The driver's legs are pushed forward - in a word, everything in these motorcycles is done to make the driver comfortable.

Cruisers are usually chrome-plated, V-powered, and have leather saddles and backrests. We can say that cruisers are touring motorcycles with a certain classic appearance.

Cruisers tend to be quite bulky and more difficult to handle than the average motorcycle, so they are not recommended for beginners.

Examples:

Suzuki Intruder CS1400

BMW R1200C

Honda Shadow VT125C

Cruiser

The Cruiser (or as some call the Cruiser) is made in the style of American cars from the 1930s to the early 1960s, such as Indian and Harley-Davidson, the latter largely defining the category.

(Harley-Davidson Street)

Most motorcycles are equipped with a V-shaped engine with a large volume of up to 1000 cc, although there are other configurations. The motors are tuned for low torque, which makes them less demanding to drive because they don't need to be accelerated as often.

The rider positions himself on the bike with his feet forward and his arms raised high enough so that his back is straight or slightly leaned back. At low and medium speeds, the Cruiser will be more comfortable than other motorcycles. However, riding for long periods of time on the freeway can become tiring due to trying to resist the force of the wind, which hits the rider directly in the chest. The vehicles are limited when turning due to insufficient ground clearance.

(Honda Shadow VT 750)

A well-known representative of this group is the Honda Shadow 750 (pictured above). On Avito this Cruiser can be bought at an average price of 250 - 300 thousand rubles.

Modern era

Decline. By 1975, more than five million motorcycles were registered in the United States alone. Over the course of several decades, the industry grew exponentially. Motorcycles have become widespread in the public consciousness. But good things can't last forever. First, the post-war generation contributed to the growth of motorcycle sales, and then these same people caused the decline. They grew older, started families, and their interest in motorcycles waned. Yes, there is always a next generation, but the population explosion has passed. But there remained a vast industry that produced too many motorcycles. The 1980s were very difficult. Of course, not a single phenomenon can be explained by one factor; other factors also played a role. The public's understanding of motorcycles has shifted. Motorcycles required more frequent maintenance than four-wheeled cars, and their prices were higher than scooters and mopeds.

Chopper

Choppers are a type of Cruiser, so named because they are a "cropped" or truncated version of the "parent". Choppers are most often custom designs made to order or "bespoke", which results in the bike being modified according to the owner's desires and, as such, is a source of pride and achievement.

(Big Dog's Chopper)

These devices have a stereotypically forward fork, a small fuel tank and a high handlebar.

These motorcycles were popularized in the Peter Fonda film Easy Rider. Being designed primarily for visual effect, Choppers are not the most efficient machines to drive.

A popular model in the category is the Honda Fury1300. You can buy a Chopper on Avito for about 550,000 rubles.

History of the motorcycle. From Japan

You meet the nicest people while driving a Honda.
Several influential companies began producing motorcycles after World War II. The Italian company Aprilia released its motorcycle in 1945. The Austrian manufacturer Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen, better known as KTM, created its first prototype in 1951. At this time, the most influential manufacturers were not from Europe, where the motorcycle industry began, but from Japan. Suzuki began producing motorcycles in 1952, while Yamaha and Honda began producing motorcycles in 1955. The first Kawasaki motorcycle was released in 1960. When Honda motorcycles began to be sold around the world, the company entered into an agreement with the advertising agency Gray Advertising in the United States. Thus began the famous advertising campaign.

You meet the nicest people while driving a Honda

This advertising campaign helped separate Honda motorcycles from the negative biker culture that was prevalent at the time. In some ways, motorcycles have become just a hobby in the American mind. Ultimately, Honda's advertising campaign was not just promoting a particular motorcycle model (Super Cub) or brand (Honda), but a new lifestyle. People now looked at motorcycles as a practical and convenient means of transportation for everyday use. This meant that motorcycles could spread much more widely.

Motorcycle sales were growing. But this was influenced not only by new perceptions. People born after the war were old enough to buy motorcycles, and sales soared. This especially affected Honda. This company has become the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. In a very short time, Japanese motorcycles have taken a dominant role on the roads. The old European brands could not keep up with them.

Care Tips for Beginners

Owning a dirt bike is just the beginning of your amazing adventures. Riding isn't the only thing you need to worry about. Like most of your equipment, you need to know how to properly care for it to keep it in tip-top condition. So, the next thing you need to do is become familiar with its constituent components. Maintaining any car is a basic skill that men need to add to their core list of skills.

Read the manual

Dirt bike parts vary from model to model. The best way to learn about your starter bike is to start with its owner's manuals. It will help you find parts and how to access or remove them, and will also teach you which mechanisms need to be constantly monitored and how to change them.

However, there are times when your user manual doesn't speak your language at all. This is a common problem for users who, as a beginner, are unable to figure it out. It may be best to refer to video tutorials. There you will find a lot of smart ideas and useful tips. If you are a naturally visual person, videos will help you a lot.

Change of oil

Make sure you are using the correct oil specifically for your engine. The frequency of its replacement depends on the frequency of use of the bike. You can also refer to your manual on this subject if you are a beginner learning the ropes. As a general rule, the oil in a beginner's motorcycle should be changed at least once a year. Always check the quality of the oil so you know for sure when it's time to change it.

One thing to remember about vehicles is that the less you use them, the more susceptible they are to corrosion. To prevent corrosion, your engine must reach the correct temperature. If you only drive short distances or at short intervals, you'll need to change your oil at least three times a year. Experts recommend running the engine at operating temperature twice a month for at least 30 minutes. And if you drive frequently, you should regularly check the color and change to a new one if necessary.

Clean the air filter

The air filter is where all the dirt is collected and prevents engine damage. It protects the engine from corrosive combustion by-products. When debris builds up and clogs the filter, air flow is reduced, affecting engine performance.

You can replace the air filter every time you change the oil or after 10,000 - 15,000 km. In some cases, you may also want to clean it instead of changing it. All you need is warm water and cleaner.

Lubricate all moving parts

The chain is the most important part of a dirt bike and requires frequent lubrication. All pivot joints found in the brake lever, wheels and shifters also require frequent lubrication. Observe the operation of parts and identify moving parts that need lubrication. Lubrication is necessary to prevent corrosion and damage. It also prevents the hinges from freezing during the winter. Before lubricating parts, clean them to remove stubborn contaminants. Always use a suitable lubricant specifically designed for this purpose.

Keep an eye on your tires

Tire pressure is a common problem in any vehicle. Riding on two wheels means you have to trust them both. You may put other things off until later, but never ignore your tires. Before you go, make sure they are in excellent condition for your safety. Check their pressure before each trip. Checking will not only make your trip more efficient, but also prevent danger on the road.

GL1800

Honda Gold Wing Tour MT is gifted with a powerful 6-cylinder boxer engine. The design of the engine results in a very favorable low center of gravity.

The engine starts quietly with the help of a starter-generator. It also makes reversing easier. The cruise control function can be activated via the electronic throttle grip. The manufacturer boasts that in 2021, specialists have optimized electronic fuel injection and ignition maps. Electronic capabilities include a hill start assist system and even electronic windshield adjustment. But once upon a time motorcyclists could only dream of such opportunities!

Its tank volume is stated to be 21.1 liters, but it will consume only 5.6 liters per 100 km.

Wave of the future

On December 7, 1895, an article in an American scientific journal predicted that motorcycles would occupy an important place in people's lives in the very near future.

Without a doubt, the motorcycle came into our lives to stay. Compared to a horse-drawn carriage, it has certain advantages. We think that this vehicle is destined to play an important role in urban traffic. Already today, the main transport arteries of large cities are heavily overloaded. Using motorcycles will help a lot in this. If thousands of horses are removed from city streets, sanitary conditions will improve significantly. And this, in turn, will have a positive impact on the health of all people.

Enduro

The name of the class comes from the English word endurance - endurance. This is a class of motorcycles designed for riding on bad roads, or even off-road. Depending on the specialization, there are several types that have common characteristics.

The main features of the class are:

  • Motorcycle design with long-travel suspensions designed to overcome rough off-road conditions;
  • Spoked wheels with a dual-purpose tread pattern, that is, designed for driving not only on asphalt, but also on the ground;
  • Most enduros have a 1-cylinder engine, tourist enduros with a cubic capacity of 650 cm³ have a 2-cylinder V-shaped engine with a cylinder camber angle of 45-60 degrees. The exceptions are the Yamaha with a 2-cylinder inline engine and the BMW with a 2-cylinder boxer engine;
  • High and wide handlebar with crossbar and hand protection, half-duplex frame;
  • A large front wing designed to protect the driver from dirt flying in the face.

There are several types of motorcycles in the enduro class, which differ markedly from each other in design. These are motocross motorcycles, enduros, touring enduros, so-called “parquet” enduros, motards, and trial motorcycles.

2001 Honda CR-125

Motocross bike

— a child of motorcycle racing over rough terrain, or even off-road, its operation on public roads is prohibited. Peculiarities:

  • Long-travel rigid suspensions that can withstand jumps and ride anywhere the pilot wants to go;
  • Minimum plastic - wings, lining, tank. The plastic is made elastic so that it does not shatter when hitting obstacles;
  • Large spoked wheels (front up to 21 inches, rear up to 19 inches), “evil” tires with large lugs;
  • Engine only 1-cylinder, 2-stroke with a volume of 50, 65, 85, 110, 125, 250 cm³, or 4-stroke 4-valve with a volume of 125, 150, 250, 450 cm³, liquid cooling with a “dry” sump - lubrication occurs from the oil tank (this is done so that oil starvation does not occur in any position of the engine);
  • A long hard seat, designed for the fact that the route is walked while standing on the pegs, a small tank;
  • There are no lighting equipment and instrument panel, weak simple brakes (on the ground they are enough);
  • Direct-flow exhaust system, on 2-stroke motorcycles - with a resonator (volute). Motocross motorcycles have very loud exhaust;
  • Motocross motorcycles are built to minimize weight. Therefore, they do not have an electric starter or battery - only a kick starter.

Honda XR-250R 2004
The hard enduro class (hard enduro) is close to motocross motorcycles. The differences lie in the greater suitability of hard enduro for civilian use - the presence of minimal lighting equipment, an instrument panel, and some models have an electric starter. Otherwise, everything is the same - rigid suspension and sporty orientation. Hard enduros are also available in 400, 450, 600 and 650 cm³ capacities, while large capacity engines are sometimes air-cooled.

Yamaha XTZ-250 Lander

Ordinary “civilian” enduros differ from sports models in that they are more adapted for dual purposes - also for use on public roads. Therefore, civilian enduros, which are similar in appearance to cross-country motorcycles, differ from them in the following:

  • The suspensions are softer, designed for riding while sitting on a seat rather than standing on the pegs;
  • Dual-purpose tires, designed for driving both on the ground and on asphalt (knobby dirt tires are almost impossible to control on asphalt);
  • Less forced engine, designed for a long service life, lubrication system with oil in the crankcase, exhaust system with a normal muffler;
  • Full set of lighting equipment, electric starter and battery;
  • More powerful brakes, often with petal discs;
  • The presence of a trunk, the seat is adapted for riding by two, a larger tank;

Civilian enduros are available with 4-stroke 1-cylinder engines with a volume of 125, 200, 250, 400, 450, 650 cm³.

1997 YAMAHA XTZ-750 Super Tenere

Touring enduro

- a class that originated from the Paris-Dakar rally, for participation in which you need a fundamentally different motorcycle than for participation in one-to-three-day enduro races. This motorcycle must be designed for long-term off-road riding, and for this it must have:

  • An advanced plastic body kit with a windshield that protects the driver from wind and dust;
  • Powerful 1-cylinder engine with a volume of 600–800 cm³. or a 2-cylinder V-shaped with a volume of 750-1000 cm³ (the exception is the Yamaha XTZ-750 Super Tenere with a 2-cylinder in-line engine), which allows you to drive for a long time at high speed off-road;
  • High-quality lighting technology that allows you to move in poor visibility conditions;
  • Comfortable conditions for the pilot, allowing you to drive for a long time without getting tired, space for luggage;
  • spoked wheels measuring 21 inches front and 17 inches rear;
  • Large tank, protection of the engine and structural elements of the motorcycle.

Touring enduros, designed for long autonomous trips on bad roads and off-road, have all this. The price for long range was greater weight and reduced cross-country ability compared to small-capacity enduros. Touring enduros require a fairly highly qualified pilot, since not everyone can control a heavy sports motorcycle traveling at high speed off-road.

2008 BMW R1200GS

The passion for traveling on relatively good roads with the possibility of going onto bad ones (where it is dangerous to ride a purely road motorcycle) has given rise to another type of tourist enduro - parquet, or civilian. Their main differences from sports touring enduros:

  • An even more powerful engine (from 650 to 1200 cm³ on the BMW R1200GS and Yamaha XTZ-1200 Super Tenere) and, as a result, a weight of up to 200 kg or more;
  • The BMW R1200GS and Yamaha XTZ-1200 Super Tenere have a cardan drive, the Buell Ylusses have a belt drive, the others have a chain drive;
  • The suspensions are short-travel compared to other enduros, the ground clearance is lower - to improve handling on asphalt;
  • The wheels on many models are light alloy, all with wide-profile tires, powerful brakes, often with ABS - to improve handling on asphalt;
  • Developed plastic body kit covering most of the motorcycle, high windshield;
  • Full double seat, luggage racks with metal cases, convenient for long trips;
  • These motorcycles are not cheap.

The main feature of civilian touring enduros is that in terms of cross-country ability, weight and speed characteristics they are close to road motorcycles, while maintaining the ease of control and overcoming road unevenness inherent in all enduros.

Husqvarna SMR-510

In the USA, another type of enduro was created - the motard, which is an enduro with the wheels and brakes of a sports bike. It was created for a special type of competition “SUPERMOTO”, where the race takes place on both dirt and asphalt. Its main difference from classic hard enduro is 17-inch spoked wheels for standard asphalt tires and powerful brakes that make stopping the motorcycle easy. In addition, its suspensions are adapted for use on asphalt. The motard is very good for driving around the city, including through traffic jams between cars, on sidewalks, etc., but it requires sufficient qualifications from the driver. Today these motorcycles are in the lineup of most major manufacturers.

Sherco Trial 2.9

Trial motorcycle

It is created for special competitions - motorcycle trials, which involve riding on tracks of such complexity that you cannot ride there on any other motorcycle. Therefore, the motorcycle is made as light as possible, with an engine capacity of 50-80-100-125 cm³. The engine characteristics are adapted for driving over obstacles.

Off-road

It's time to talk about the second class of motorcycles - off-road. Otherwise they are called “dirt bikes” or “dirty motorcycles”. Compared to road vehicles, their design is simplified, they have powerful wheels, a lightweight frame without fairings. SUVs are equipped with all-terrain tires - this ensures excellent traction on unpaved roads. Typically, such motorcycles have a single-cylinder engine, borrowed from cross-country motorcycles.

Next we will talk about the types of such motorcycles and their purpose. They, like road ones, are divided into types completely arbitrarily.

Motocross

Motorcycles of this type were created to participate in various sporting events, in areas where the road does not even smell. Typically, such equipment is equipped with two-stroke engines. Motocross is lightweight, has a durable frame, and reliable suspension. Many models of motocross motorcycles are completely devoid of lighting technology - from a kick starter.

Good news: motocross does not need to be registered with the traffic police. If this is important to you, please pay attention.

Enduro

We are talking about the same motocross, only you can ride it on city roads and register it. The motorcycle is equipped with light optics and has an engine that is not as powerful as a cross-country motorcycle. Enduro also has a conditional division:

  • sports motorcycles with powerful engines;
  • universal soft enduro;
  • typical off-road enduro;
  • heavy class motorcycles;
  • "parquet" enduro.

Rally

The rally motorcycle has a loud and clear name. They are participating in the toughest motorcycle race in Saudi Arabia. Every year, KTM produces a small batch of rally motorcycles that are as close as possible to the factory prototypes.

KTM 450 Rally Factory Replica 2022

This year, the Austrians did not change their tradition - the KTM 450 Rally Factory Replica 2022 was made with the direct participation of riders Toby Price, Matthias Wallner and Sam Sunderland.

Dual sport

Dual-use motorcycles. With this two-wheeled SUV you can get anywhere on a civilized road or in the wild.

In this category, the 250cc four-stroke is not only the most affordable off-roader, but also the best suited for tackling the wild. They have the ideal size, weight and good fuel consumption.

Trial

Motorcycles that belong to this class are used in sports such as motorcycle trials - a technical sport. Athletes overcome various obstacles and perform variable stunts on a motorcycle. The structure of such motorcycles is unique - they are as light as possible, their engine adapts to the upcoming obstacle and its cubic capacity can be 50-125 cubic meters. Models with excellent traction, reliable frame, energy-intensive suspension.

Track racing

This category of motorcycles is similar to a trial, since it is also created to participate in a competition - racing on a track. This is a specific form of motorcycle racing where teams or individual athletes compete on a dirt oval track. Track racing motorcycles are light, well-controlled and powerful.

Snow bike

A snow bike literally glides on skis and becomes an excellent replacement for a snowboard. It can only be ridden in winter when descending snowy slopes.

The design of such snow motorcycles was revived by the German engineer M. Gfaller. After the war, he created a very practical model of a bicycle-snowmobile. In the 40s, an even more convenient snow bike model appeared, created by E. Brentner. Today the most popular snowbike manufacturer is the Brentner company. It was founded by the grandson of the famous inventor.

Sport bike

Suzuki GSX-1300R Hayabusa 2007 Yamaha FJR-1300 2003
Sports motorcycles are designed for participation in sports competitions (races). Over more than a century of history, motorcycles have undergone great changes, ranging from ordinary ones adapted for participation in competitions, to specialized ones created for a specific type of competition, such as road racing, supermoto, motocross, speedway, and ice racing.

Modern sportbike

Sports bikes are produced with a 2-stroke engine in the 50, 125, 250 cm³ classes. and with a 4-stroke engine in the classes 250, 400, 600, 750, 1000 cm³. and more. At the same time, when creating a sportbike, the main emphasis is on obtaining maximum power from the engine and maximum controllability at high speeds. The features of the sportbike are:

  • The sportbike is completely covered with plastic lining to reduce air resistance. The civilian version has all the necessary road lighting equipment, the sports version is made without headlights and turn indicators - they are not needed on the track.
  • The engine of a sportbike, as a rule, is either a 4-cylinder in-line (all Japanese sportbikes and BMW, as well as the Italian MV Agusta), or a 2-cylinder V-shaped (all Italian sportbikes except MV, Suzuki TLR, Honda VTR). Other designs are less commonly used - 4-cylinder V-twin (technology coming from MotoGP, where it is used by Honda, Yamaha and more recently Ducati), 3-cylinder in-line (Benelli, Triumph), 1-cylinder (125 cm³ 2-stroke sports bikes), 2-cylinder in-line (Kawasaki: Ninja 250, Ninja 300), 2-cylinder boxer (BMW). Liquid-cooled engines, often with an oil cooler, mounted across the frame. Engine power 125 cm³ 2-stroke - 30-35 hp. s., 250 cm³ 4-stroke - 40-45 l. s., 400 cm³ - 60-75 l. s., 600 cm³ - about 120 l. s., 750 cm³ - up to 150 l. s., 1000 cm³ - 180-201 l. With. (civilian) and 210-250 l. With. (racing), more than 1000 cm³ - 190-205 l. With. All engines are naturally aspirated, some are equipped with inertial supercharging. Sports motorcycles with a turbocharger and nitrous oxide injection (participate in drag racing only) have a power of more than 300 hp. With.

Ducati 1098

  • A sportbike is created with the maximum use of light alloy parts - frame, wheels, pendulum, fork parts, traverses. Due to this, on civilian sportbikes with a 1000 cm³ engine. it is possible to achieve a dry weight of 180 kg and a power to weight ratio of 1:1. At the same time, suspension design technologies are used that minimize the unsprung weight: inverted cartridge forks and monoshock absorbers - with a full range of adjustments, cantilever pendulums, etc. All this is done to improve the handling of the motorcycle, which becomes almost a standard.
  • The mounting angle of the sportbike fork is kept to a minimum to improve handling. But since motorcycles with such a steering column design are subject to the shimmy effect, sportbikes (most of them already from the factory) are equipped with a steering damper, similar in design to a car shock absorber - it dampens steering wheel vibrations, preventing loss of control and falling.
  • The sportbike is equipped with the most powerful brakes. They use disc brakes with radially rigid caliper mounts, petal carbon discs, reinforced brake lines; on Buell sportbikes, the brake disc is mounted on the wheel rim, thereby achieving its largest diameter and greatest efficiency. Such brakes can provide the driver with fast and controlled braking from a speed of 250 km/h or more, in straight sections of the track, to 100-120 km/h, in turns.
  • The sportbike is equipped with a direct-flow or semi-direct-flow exhaust system, the task of which is to quickly remove gases from the engine and release them at the rear of the motorcycle without delays in the sound-damping elements. Parts of such a system are often made of carbon. Hence, another feature of motorcycles of this type is the loud exhaust sound.
  • Sports motorcycles are equipped with special tires; for track racing - slick tires (tires without a tread pattern); for civilian use - special tires that provide maximum braking and steering efficiency. The usual wheel size on sport bikes is 17 inches, the usual tire size is 120/70 in the front and 160-190/55 in the rear (the first number means the width of the tire in millimeters, the second the height as a percentage of the width).
  • The driver's position on a sportbike is dictated by the requirements to minimize air resistance and maximize cornering control. Therefore, the driver's footpegs are raised and pushed back, and he sits leaning forward, lying on the tank during the race. This seating position is comfortable for driving, but is not designed for long-term driving. For the same reason, the passenger seat on civilian sportbikes is not designed for the passenger to ride on it for a long time, and on many motorcycles there is none at all - in its place there is an aerodynamic cap.

Since driving a sportbike (especially on a track) is a rather difficult and dangerous task, it places the highest demands on the driver’s skill and on protective equipment, which is made with the maximum degree of protection from impact and abrasion on the asphalt. However, high speeds make driving this type of motorcycle quite dangerous, as evidenced by the fact that sportbikes take first place in the number of accidents and the number of deaths in them.

The use of high technology leads to a high price. Thus, the civilian Honda CBR-600RR costs $12,000, the racing Honda CBR-600RR Hannspree costs $87,000.

The subclasses of this class are sport, supersport and sport-touring. Supersport is distinguished by 4-cylinder engines with a cubic capacity of more than 1000 cm³ (Kawasaki ZX-12R and ZX-14R, Suzuki GSX-1300R), sport-tourist - by lower engine power and suitability for long trips on asphalt: a landing position close to the classic one, fastenings for panniers , developed wind protection (Honda CBR-1100XX Blackbird, Yamaha FJR-1300, Kawasaki GTR-1400). Some sports tourers have a cardan drive for the rear wheel.

In the early years immediately following the invention of the motorcycle, a huge number of small companies and start-ups emerged, simultaneously trying to make inroads into the emerging two-wheeler market. More than a century later, history is repeating itself as the electric vehicle sector rapidly expands, creating the “electric revolution.”

With several key players like Zero and Energica consistently pushing the boundaries over the last decade, the proton space has evolved at a staggering pace. And with production costs finally starting to come down as performance and range have improved significantly, the market has recently seen an increasingly impressive array of production models across a variety of genres and styles.

For this reason, there has never been a better time to think about switching to an electric motorcycle. In this article we will look at the best specimens that you can buy. We'll also delve into what makes these battery-powered bikes unique and what you should consider when purchasing one.

Main characteristics when buying an electric bike

When electric cars first hit the market, they were still new, and their main selling point was undoubtedly their greener nature. However, over time, both electric cars and electric motorcycles have experienced huge technological and mechanical leaps. This has ultimately led to the emergence of electric motorcycles that boast performance that is on par, if not objectively superior, to their gas-powered counterparts, as well as features that are unique to the battery-powered bike segment. Below we will briefly touch on some factors and features.

Cake Kalk&
Zero Emissions: While performance and autonomy have improved significantly, electric motorcycles are still emissions-free, and as such are a much more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative.

No noise: In addition to the absence of exhaust gases, electric motorcycles are also devoid of sound. There's just the quiet whir of the electric motor and the sound of wheels rolling on asphalt, a stark contrast to the roar of the gasoline engines found on most motorcycles. Not only does this mean your neighbors won't hate you, but it will also allow you to more readily communicate and appreciate your surroundings, allowing you to take advantage of the completely unobstructed view of the road and your surroundings that you have from the saddle of a motorcycle.

Power Output and Delivery: The most distinctive and unique aspect that sets electric motorcycles apart from traditional ICE models is the power delivery. Unlike gasoline-powered motorcycles, which produce maximum torque and power at a certain point in the rev range, electric motorcycles instantly produce 100% of their torque at all times. What's more, they don't just deliver their torque instantaneously, they deliver absolutely insane, unprecedented amounts of it, putting even the most high-performance petrol-powered superbikes to shame.

Unique Design: Without having to follow the design elements of traditional motorcycles, which are dictated by the necessity and presence of a gas tank and internal combustion engine, electric motorcycle designers have significantly more freedom when creating electric bikes. Thus, electric motorcycles boast a noticeably more distinctive and unique design and style.

Automatic: Although the number of models is growing, the lion's share of production gasoline-powered motorcycles are equipped with a manual transmission. Electric motorcycles, like most scooters, have automatic transmissions that don't require the rider to engage the clutch and shift gears, which is admittedly one of the most difficult and intimidating parts of first learning to ride. This ultimately makes electric motorcycles more accessible and beginner-friendly.

Energica EGO
Raw Performance: Besides the huge torque, they accelerate insanely fast offline and tend to have a low center of gravity (usually due to battery placement). There are electric motorcycles that can break the 200 mph barrier, although most electric motorcycles sacrifice top speed in favor of acceleration. With that said, this can always be adjusted by changing the gear.

Technology and Connectivity: Electric motorcycles use advanced motors and state-of-the-art batteries with incredibly impressive energy densities. Connect to smartphone apps to monitor battery level or GPS location or download firmware updates wirelessly. Not only can the electric motors be configured for multiple power modes via the app or on the bike itself. On-board vehicle diagnostics, digital geofencing and automatic data logging have also started to become more common.

Reduced Maintenance: Electric motorcycles require significantly less maintenance and repairs for the engine and transmission. There are some factors, such as working with brake fluid and tires, that you will still have to do, but overall, owning an electric bike is significantly less complicated than maintaining a gas motorcycle.

Weight, chassis, charging time

Since electric motorcycles have many unique features, the factors to consider when shopping are also somewhat different from the normal motorcycle buying process. In the next section, we'll look at the most important areas to consider when bringing a new electric motorcycle to the market.

Intended Use: No matter what bike you're considering, your first question should always be how you'll use it. If you're planning on short-distance commuting, you'll likely be considering different machines than if you're planning on spending most of your time in the saddle on the track, or traveling long distances - the latter of which is now possible thanks to an ever-growing charging infrastructure electric vehicles.

Weight: Batteries on electric motorcycles have evolved rapidly, becoming more powerful and compact, although, unfortunately, they still weigh quite a lot, making up a significant portion of the total curb weight of the motorcycle. While this weight is typically placed quite low, it is nonetheless noticeable and deserves careful consideration when looking at a given model's specifications.

Price: Electric motorcycles are quickly becoming more affordable, although they are admittedly still more expensive than ICE models. Luckily, prices are becoming more competitive and you can now check out a fantastic two-wheeled electric motorcycle. There are also more premium, high-performance models that, unsurprisingly, have a higher MSRP. There's nothing wrong with paying a lot, just be sure to consider the big picture of what you're getting for your money.

Pursang E-Tracker
Range: As with electric vehicles, range is one of the most commonly considered features. And while range anxiety was once a real issue, today's versions boast ranges of up to several hundred kilometers. There are also optional battery packs that can extend the range even further for some models. As controllers evolve and algorithms improve, many models offer the ability to receive firmware updates, allowing the motorcycle to evolve and offer ever greater performance and range.

Charging Time: The required charging time is as important as the range of an electric motorcycle battery. This is another area where there have been significant improvements in recent years, and full charge times are now typically just a few hours (using a fast charger).

Power and Performance: It is the incredible power output that electric bikes provide that gives them lightning-fast acceleration to 100 km/h and sometimes even some remarkable top speeds. Analyzing the actual performance characteristics of an electric motorcycle will give you a better idea of how its power output performs.

Chassis: Again, as with conventional engines, proton-powered bikes can have a wide range of chassis options, from off-the-shelf, low-cost offerings to top-of-the-line Swedish or Italian-made racing models. These factors directly affect handling, cornering, and stopping ability, so it's critical to check parts such as the fork, rear suspension setup, and front and rear brake hardware.

Technology: As mentioned earlier, modern electric motorcycles are often loaded with advanced technology. So, if you're shopping in this space, you'll want to see if the model you're considering has features like geo-fencing capabilities, multiple power delivery modes, the ability to connect to smartphone apps for customization, and battery life monitoring. , and so on.

Style: While retro-style offerings exist, many of today's electric motorcycle manufacturers have chosen to lean into the modern, cutting-edge nature of their two-wheeled devices with sleek, futuristic industrial designs. The fact is, there are many different styles and genres of electric motorcycles in production these days, so it's worth exploring all your available options before you buy.

A powerful electric bike not for beginners

Without the proper protection of a roll cage and crumple zones, motorcycles are objectively more dangerous than cars, but we would still argue that motorcycles get an unfairly bad reputation for being more dangerous than they actually are. The reason is that too many riders start their careers on bikes that are objectively too big and too powerful for their limited skill and experience level. Learning to drive from a high-performance car would be a bad idea, and doing the same on a motorcycle is equally impractical—as every motorcycle training instructor will tell you.

Larger, higher-performance electric motorcycles are a terrible choice for new riders and should be avoided entirely unless you have several years of experience in the saddle. The good news is that there are electric motorcycle models to suit all skill levels.

Electric motorcycle (“Electric motorcycle”)

Design:

It is based on the body of a gasoline sportbike, the internal space of which is occupied by a block battery (Li-ion or Li-po). The driving range and charging time of an electric motorcycle depend on the battery capacity.

Instead of an internal combustion engine and a chain drive, a brushless electric motor (wheel motor) is installed on the rear wheel. Its power determines the driving speed and traction force of an electric motorcycle.

Advantages and disadvantages of an electric motorcycle compared to gasoline motorcycles:

With an electric motor power of up to 4000W, it does not require registration and receipt of numbers.

Does not require fuel.

Does not require constant maintenance.

There is no need to add oil.

There are no strong exhaust odors.

Environmentally friendly, which allows you to ride in protected areas and city parks.

There is no internal combustion engine, which is the main cause of failure of conventional motorcycles.

Peculiarities:

No roar from the exhaust pipe due to the absence of both the pipe and the internal combustion engine.

There is no way to burn rubber. Engine locks when the brake is pressed.

Flaws

:

As of 2021, prices for both motorcycles and components are inflated.

Low mileage on one charge.

Long charging time.

Fast battery consumption at high speeds.

Air-cooled only: motorcycles overheat and go into “temperature protection mode.”

Charging requires special adapters and chargers.

Charging from a 220V network is not always possible.

Most service stations do not have electronics specialists.

In cold weather, the battery capacity decreases.

If other devices (mobile phones, players, speaker systems, navigators, etc.) are powered from the motorcycle, then the range on charge becomes even shorter.

You cannot take extra fuel containers with you and simply put them in the trunk or place them on the passenger seat to refuel if there is no suitable gas station nearby for a long time.

Many countries still impose taxes on electric motorcycles, despite the fact that they have no emissions.

If the engine is “wedged,” the clutch cannot be depressed to avoid locking the rear wheel. But the wedge of an electric motor is a rare phenomenon.

If your battery is dead and there's no charging station nearby, you can't just stop a passing car and ask them to share the fuel.

If the add-on is installed incorrectly. equipment or its poor quality, it is quite possible that it will discharge the motorcycle battery even when parked or when stopping, and, consequently, reduce the mileage on a charge.

Non-standard

And finally, completely non-standard solutions in motorcycle technology, which are chosen by a small number of users. However, it would be wrong not to mention them.

Tricycles

A motorcycle tricycle is a classic vehicle that is very similar to a motorcycle, only it has two front wheels. It is equipped with a regular motorcycle handlebar. The advantages of a tricycle include increased stability due to a pair of additional wheels, a large area and traction force of the engine, as well as the presence of a spacious luggage compartment. A tricycle can be created on the basis of classic, some types of racing motorcycles and touring motorcycles.

Closed

The first thought when seeing this type of transport is “concept again.” However, surprisingly, this is not the case. A closed motorcycle is quite a real vehicle, which has its own name - MonoTracer. A motorcycle with an enclosed interior improves ergonomics and ensures the safety and comfort of the driver while riding.

Sports and tourism

Something in between touring and sports models. In terms of comfort, sports touring models are similar to touring bikes. They are brought together by an upright seating position, a high windshield and other details that make life easier for the rider. Sports tourists borrowed more power and a streamlined body in a plastic body kit from sports models.

It is convenient to travel long distances on paved roads on sports touring motorcycles. An example of a classic sports tourer is the CFMOTO 650 TK (ABS). Its 650 cc engine produces 61 hp. s., and a low ground clearance of 140 mm and fairings have a positive effect on speed characteristics. There are two spacious side cases and a small cargo area for things.

Streetfighters

Relatively small group. The technical parameters are reminiscent of sports motorcycles, but all the extra plastic is missing. Very often, street bikes become sports motorbikes that have been involved in a traffic accident. The models are ideal for performing various tricks. Their main differences are a smaller dashboard, a powerful headlight, and the absence of fairings. All mechanisms are as open as possible.

Motorcycle classic

You can hear a lot of names for types of bikes, including roadsters, nakeds, neoclassics . However, they all refer specifically to classic motorcycles. Such vehicles are the most versatile models. First of all, their cost is quite low. On the other hand, modern classic motorcycles are no worse than sportbikes in terms of chassis. At the same time, the landing is straight, which greatly increases comfort. At the same time, if you develop high speed, the driver will be blown away.

Perhaps this model will not be the best option for the highway, but in the city it behaves very confidently. The advantages of the motorcycle also include good maneuverability and low operating costs. One of the best options for every day.

What types of motorcycles are there?

A clear division of motorcycles into types does not exist to this day. It’s also difficult to name how many types of motorcycles there are. But there is an opportunity to find out why this type of vehicle has a fairly extensive classification and what became the “starting point” of today’s conditional classification.

The motorcycle became especially popular at the beginning of the 20th century. In transport, users of that time liked the sporty spirit, mobility and low cost of a motorcycle. As you know, demand creates supply. Therefore, at this time, many companies begin to conduct engineering development of new motorcycle technology.

The work does not go unnoticed: the world learns what pneumatic tires, electric lighting, spark ignition, chain drive, soft suspension, etc. are. The motorcycle gradually acquired all this, turning from a bicycle with a motor into a solid, durable and reliable transport vehicle. means.

With the advent of design schools in the States, England, Germany and Italy, motorcycles began to be ranked into groups. The main classification - on-road and off-road - remains the same. With the introduction of motorcycles into racing, various types of sports motorcycles emerged alongside cars.

The modern classification of motorcycles ranks them according to purpose, weight, engine size, control method, number of wheels, etc. Let's delve into the topic and see what the rapid development of motorcycle technology has led to, let's go over the main types of modern motorcycles and find out their "tricks" .

Custom

This is the most specific class of motorcycles. This includes choppers, dragsters and diggers. As a rule, models are not intended for mass production; their production is limited to a single copy or a couple of pieces. Basically, the production of such vehicles is carried out by folk craftsmen. As a result, the parameters may be more than different. You can install any power unit and gearbox. A combination of different parts from several models is often used.

If we talk about serial customs, then it’s worth stopping at Harley-Davidson. An extended front fork, a large amount of chrome, an attractive design - such motorcycles are not just means of transportation, but real works of art. Among the advantages of the models are the original design and greater power. At the same time, their cost is very high, and repairing exclusive bikes can be somewhat difficult.

Motorcycle Society

The motorcycle community was growing and government agencies couldn't stay away. As a result, the International Motorcycle Organization FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) was organized. It all started in 1904 with a small club. A couple of decades later, in 1924, the American Motorcyclist Association AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) was founded.

By the 1910s, motorcycles were firmly established in people's daily lives. Companies that ten years ago produced only a few hundred motorcycles a year were now producing thousands. The intended buyers were young men. They were suitable for several reasons. Firstly, they are more courageous and desperate. Secondly, they could not afford expensive cars. And, finally, they did not have time to acquire families that would need to be transported somewhere. Motorcycles were used not only as a means of transportation, but also for entertainment. For over a century, recreational motorcycling has remained an important aspect of the industry.

Thanks to their low price, speed and practicality, motorcycles have penetrated many areas of people's daily lives. For example, motorcycles began to be used in delivery: mail, groceries, etc. Some motorcycles were even designed specifically for these purposes. At the same time, motorcycles with sidecars began to gain popularity. They allowed the motorcyclist to take a passenger with him and carry him on the side on a separate seat.

"cafe racers" and "scramblers"

Cafe racers and scramblers can also be classified as standard motorcycles. A cafe racer is a motorcycle designed for walking short distances.

Often the life of a cafe racer motorcycle begins with the conversion of a standard bike into a cafe racer, while everything unnecessary is removed from the standard machine, even the tails are sawed off, converting the bike from a two-seater to a single-seater.

Its design is optimized for speed and handling at the expense of ride comfort.

The term "Cafe Racer" originated in the UK in the 60s as an ironic name for motorcyclists who pretended to be "cool" professional racers by parking their cars next to their table in a cafe.

Another cafe racer, which is very difficult to ride together...

And “scramblers” are dual-purpose motorcycles, designed for both asphalt and cross-country riding.

Two of the latest 2021 Ducati Scrambler motorcycles, equipped with cornering ABS and a multimedia system for listening to music and even talking on the phone.

Scramblers have a longer wheelbase, which means greater comfort than “coffee pots”. There is also a seat for a passenger, which, although not so comfortable, is quite possible to get from point “A” to point “B”.

Opposite

A piston internal combustion engine with rows of cylinders positioned at an angle of 180 degrees relative to each other. Reaching the dead center of the opposing pistons occurs simultaneously (mirrored). Very similar to the V-twin engine, but the difference is in the degree of cylinder placement. Used by BMW and in our Urals and Dnieper. Pros: high torque, cylinders are well cooled, center of gravity is low. Cons: wide design and difficult to assemble (especially the gas distribution mechanism).

Our recommendation is to purchase original components. We cooperate with manufacturing plants Suzuki and Honda and supply contract spare parts that are tested by specialists. Write to our employees, they will help you choose the right part.
