A short review of motorcycle fuel filters

I decided to order a fuel filter for my motorcycle, but I have very limited space to install the filter. When choosing a filter for myself in online stores, I encountered a problem that most filters either do not indicate sizes at all, or indicate the most basic ones. In addition, in some cases the design was not entirely clear to me, and I did not want to buy something unknown. I decided to review 6 different filters.

In packages

In the review I will give all the overall dimensions of the filters, give macro photographs of the filter elements and say a few words about the design. In the description of each of these filters there are the words “motorcycle fuel filter”, in all but the last one it says “car fuel filter”

Of course, all filters have different filtering properties; the only thing they have in common is that they are fuel filters. If anyone has knowledge on the scope of application of the filter element, then please share this knowledge in the comments. I will structure the review in such a way that the filters will be arranged in order of decreasing size.

How to check the fuel pump on a scooter?

Summer. Time for the sensations of driving both cars, motorcycles and scooters. A scooter, according to reviews from travelers, is a convenient and fun technology. On it, if systems and parts are checked and adjusted, movements are made along asphalt roads over vast distances. One of the parts that plays a role in the proper functioning of gasoline in the engine operating system is the scooter's fuel pump. Let's take a closer look at the purpose for which a fuel pump on a scooter is used, and how this part works.

On what models is it installed?

The fuel pump is installed on various models of scooters. The most common ones are presented below.

The scooter's fuel pump plays a role in the proper functioning of gasoline in the engine operating system.

On Japanese models:

  • Honda Dio - easy to use, with a glove compartment that allows you to store a helmet and other things on the go, tank capacity is 4-6 liters;
  • Vamaha Jog – has great maneuverability, the volume of the power unit is 49 cubic centimeters.

On Chinese scooters:

  • Suzuki Address V110 is a two-stroke with a medium speed engine, its wheelbase is designed for movement around the city and beyond;
  • Viper Storm 150 is a two-seater, reliable, comfortable model.

Gasoline pumps are installed on equipment from Russia - a manufacturer in Yoshkar-Ola, an official dealer of Polaris and the Russian brand of several companies Irbis:

  • Lifan LF 125T-27 - it has a four-stroke engine, 125 cubic centimeters, speed 80 kilometers per hour, gas tank capacity 5 liters;
  • Irbis Z50R is a high-speed scooter for driving outside the city with wide tires.

Features of operation and spare parts

Gasoline is poured into one of the holes in the tank. The fuel pump automatically opens when the engine starts, and closes its second hole when it stops. In this case, a vacuum occurs, affecting the opening of the gas tap to supply fuel to the pipeline. Then, through the gasoline filter, the fuel enters the carburetor, where it is mixed with the air that has passed through the air filter. At the same time, the filters clean gasoline and air from foreign impurities, respectively, protecting scooter parts from damage.

How do they use a fuel pump on Chinese scooters? On Chinese technology, instead of a pump, there is a vacuum valve. Here, fuel is supplied from the tank by gravity, since the tank is located above the carburetor. When servicing and repairing, it is necessary to pay attention to breakdowns and contamination of hoses from the carburetor and filters in the tap.

How to properly check?

How to check the fuel pump on a scooter? This question worries many fans of this vehicle when the vehicle does not start. There could be several reasons for this, one of them is that there is something wrong with this part. You can carefully check the performance of the fuel pump yourself.

First, let's try to configure the fuel pump:

  1. It has two screws: the first is for idle speed, the second is responsible for the quality of the fuel mixture. We tighten both screws, then release the second screw two turns, the first two and a half turns. We start the scooter, listen to the engine: smooth - no adjustment required, intermittent - continue.
  2. We fix the equipment with a step, slowly tighten the idle screw until the clutch engages - the wheel begins to rotate. Unscrew it a quarter turn. We check while driving: if acceleration is difficult, then tighten the screw a quarter turn. Acceleration is normal - the screw should be turned a quarter counterclockwise. Then we adjust the idle speed screw again.

Let's take a closer look at how to check the vacuum fuel pump on a scooter if the adjustment fails:

  • Unscrew the four screws using the hexagonal star handle;
  • carefully pull out the fuel pump cover, remove the rubber gasket, membrane, see the valve;

One of the important parts is the fuel pump for the scooter.

  • due to the vacuum, gasoline passes through the valve from the tank into the upper chamber of the carburetor, we clean it;
  • close it in the same sequence: gasket, membrane, gasket, screw it on, install it on the scooter and ride. It is necessary that there is always gasoline, otherwise these parts in the gasoline pump may dry out;
  • You must tighten it carefully so that gasoline does not spill out.

Third filter

Filter link: Third filter

The filter is available in four colors: gold, red, blue and black.

The design of this filter is even simpler than the previous two. The filter consists of only four parts: a filter element and two housing halves, one of which has a rubber sealing ring installed. Housing material: aluminum. The quality of the thread is good, the filter element is pressed tightly when screwing the housing halves and does not loosen. How this filter differs from the previous two is the filter element. Here it is made of some pressed material. The first thought that came to my mind when I saw the filter element was whether pieces of it would fall off and end up where they shouldn’t. I tried to pick out a piece with my fingernail, but nothing worked, then I tried to do the same with a knife, and again I failed. The filter element consists of many pressed balls, which I tried to separate from each other. The weight of the filter element is 8.9 grams; unfortunately, I cannot say what it is made of.

Here are a couple of photos of the filter element:

A slight drawback of this filter is the way it is tightened when twisted and disassembled after tightening it tightly. Unlike the previous two filters, there is no possibility of tightening with a wrench. One half of the filter is rough and the other is smooth.

And this is how the filter element is located inside the filter:

The filter dimensions are 71.9 mm x 27.8 mm. Filter weight 41.6 grams.

Features of the gas pump on a 4T scooter

In a four-stroke Chinese scooter, the fuel pump consists of a cap, a spring, a valve with a membrane, a fuel needle, and a vacuum chamber. If the membrane or needle is damaged, the elements must be replaced.

This technique uses an original mixture. There are starting enrichment agents. The dosing needle releases the trigger channel. A passage opens to increase the dose of fuel. The system disables the idle option under load.

Adjustment when the engine is warm with a special screw, when tightening it, makes the air flow less. The fuel becomes richer, the number of revolutions increases. When unscrewing it, the process occurs in reverse.

Fourth filter

Filter link: Fourth filter

The filter is available in five colors: gold, red, blue, black and silver.

This filter is a smaller version of the previous filter. The same filter element is used here, only slightly smaller in size. The body material is also aluminum. The filter also consists of four parts, two halves of the housing, a filter element and a rubber gasket.

Only unlike the previous model, the rubber sealing ring is installed in the inner part of the case, onto which the second half of the case is screwed. The quality of the threads here is also at a high level, but both halves of the housing are made smooth, which complicates the process of assembling and disassembling the filter housing. Another disadvantage is that due to the use of a thick o-ring, the filter element dangles in the housing. As a result, filtration efficiency deteriorates. Combined with the inconvenience of assembly and disassembly, this filter model can be considered a failure.

In the next photo we see the filter element:

The dimensions of this filter are 57.3 mm x 24.3 mm. Weight is 23.4 grams.

Everything about the vacuum valve and fuel pump for scooters and maxi-scooters

Based on the name itself, it is quite clear that this pump pumps fuel from the gas tank to the carburetor. The fuel pump or vacuum valve on scooters, both Japanese and Chinese, perform almost the same function - correct and timely supply of fuel. We will talk about their differences in more detail later in this article. They have several outlets for hoses. These are mainly fuel (fuel inlet and outlet), and one air.

When starting the internal combustion engine of a scooter, a vacuum is created in the intake manifold. It flows through a rubber hose into the air fitting of the vacuum valve or fuel pump. In the body of the pump/faucet itself there is a membrane, which is pressed mainly by a spring and blocks the fuel supply channel. The incoming vacuum creates pressure on the membrane, the spring is compressed, and the membrane moves away, thereby opening the fuel channel.

What is the difference between a vacuum valve and a gas pump on scooters? A vacuum valve, or vacuum valve as it is also called, is used mainly in fuel systems where the gas tank is located above the engine, and fuel from the tank to the carburetor can flow by gravity. In this case, the vacuum pump is only responsible for the correct dosage. The gasoline pump, in turn, is located in the fuel lines of motorcycle equipment where the gas tank is located below the engine, and not only the correct dosed supply is required, but also pumping of the fuel itself. In modern models with 4-stroke engines, electric gasoline pumps are mainly used instead of vacuum ones.

If the vacuum valve or fuel pump fails, the operation of the engine on the scooter will be stable, the engine may be difficult to start, or may not start at all, “triple” (even on cylinder 1), poorly gain momentum, with dips, “sneezing.” If it is not possible to repair, clean and service the faucet/pump, the only solution is to buy a new fuel pump/vacuum pump for the scooter. You can purchase these fuel system components on our website. Just type “gasoline pump” or “vacuum tap” in the search bar, and the site will display all the options. Or just follow the links: buy a fuel pump for a scooter and buy a vacuum valve for a scooter

Second filter

Link to filter: Second filter This filter has another type: beep

They sent me a slightly different filter than the one in the link. But both of these filters use the same filter element, the only thing that may differ in them is the length.

I would also like to note that this filter model has a slightly higher thread quality than the previous one. I'm not saying that the previous filter had bad threads, but this model has a slightly better thread.

The design of this filter is somewhat simpler than the previous one. It consists of seven parts: two lids with rubber O-rings, a glass bulb, a filter element and a pin. The pin simultaneously functions as a fuel line and a filter element retainer. The filter housing is aluminum with a glass bulb. The flask is made of thick glass, but the glass is slightly thinner than that of the first filter. You can also notice that compared to the first filter, the structure of the mesh of the filter element has changed slightly, it has become thinner and the cells in it have become larger.

The filter weight is 44.2 g. Its length is 95.2 mm, diameter is 26.9 mm.

Scooter fuel pump - connect correctly

How to properly connect the fuel pump on a scooter after repair or replacement, we will consider further.
The fuel pump is a relatively simple and uncomplicated unit, but some novice craftsmen have difficulty reconnecting it.

How does a fuel pump work on a scooter?

To better understand the purpose of certain outputs, you need to understand the principle of operation of the gas pump. The essence of its work is based on the principle of transmitting pressure fluctuations in the crank chamber.

Usually a hose is connected from the crank chamber to the pump. As you can see in the photo, the scooter's fuel pump is equipped with three fittings. In addition to the inlet and outlet, usually marked with arrows, there is the same fitting for connecting to the crank chamber, often it is marked in the form of waves.

How to properly connect a scooter fuel pump

In the diagram we see three fittings.

  1. Input - connect the hose from the fuel tank here.
  2. Exit - here we connect the hose going to the carburetor.
  3. On the crank - a hose connection fitting that goes to the crank chamber.

As you can see, everything is simple and clear. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments field.

First filter

Link to filter: First filter There is also a shortened version: beep

I will start my review of the most massive and most versatile filter. Its versatility lies in the fact that the kit comes with three adapters for a hose with an internal diameter of 6 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm. The outer diameter of the adapter for a 6 mm hose is 6.3 mm, for an 8 mm hose is 8.1 mm, for a 10 mm hose is 9.5 mm. The filter housing is aluminum with a glass bulb.

The filter consists of eleven parts: two adapters, two side covers with rubber seals in each, a hollow pin in the center, a filter element, a filter element retainer with a rubber sealing ring and a glass bulb. By the way, the glass of the flask is very thick, the thickness of the glass is 2.7 mm (photo in the spoiler just below). In the next photo you can see all this. You can’t see all of them in the photographs, but there are 4 holes in the tube, two on one side and two on the other, it may seem that the tube is hollow and gasoline simply flows through, without filtration, but in the center the tube

Since the filter is completely disassembled, the pin must be oriented correctly when assembling it. Otherwise, the filter turns into a plug. In order to better imagine the quality of the materials, I will provide photographs of some parts of the filter. And I'll start with the filter element.

The length of the filter with installed adapters is 122.7 mm, and the weight is 49.2 g.

How to check the fuel pump of a scooter for serviceability

In the comments, people often ask about ways to check the fuel pump of a scooter for serviceability. In fact, there is only one way, and it is very simple.

When to check if the fuel pump is working

You have a scooter with a bottom tank. These scooters use a fuel pump rather than a fuel valve to supply fuel.

Let's say fuel does not enter the carburetor float chamber, although there is gasoline in the tank, the fuel filter is clean, and the hoses are not pinched.

Check that the fuel pump is connected correctly according to the diagram below:

We talked in more detail about connecting the fuel pump here.

In fact, all that remains is to check it.

How to properly check a scooter's fuel pump for serviceability

  1. Disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor.
  2. Press the starter button and crank the engine several times with the starter.
  3. In time with the rotation of the engine, the fuel pump should “spit out” the portion of gasoline specified by the manufacturer from the hose that you disconnected from the carburetor fitting.
  4. If gasoline is not supplied, the fuel pump does not work.
  5. It happens that gasoline is supplied, but the portion is very small and this is not enough for normal engine operation. Usually this is clearly visible - there is no pulsed supply of gasoline in time with the rotation of the crankshaft, and the tip of the hose only barely gets wet. In this case, with a high degree of probability we can say that the fuel pump is also not working.
