Tour trips? On a scooter? I had the opportunity to do this in the Sonoma Grape Valley and test the veracity of this advertisement. Okay, at least I managed to buy a bottle of good wine for the occasion...

If you're used to thinking of yourself as a sportbike, naked bike, or even cruiser fan, you might find the Burgman a little clunky. But the dual seat and footrests are very good, and you can adjust the backrest and extend your legs for more comfort. All you need now is an Arnold Palmer fashion catalog (no coffee cup holder) and a remote control. And is it possible to find something else that would be easier to manage? Single cylinder machine with variable V-belt ratio allows footless operation; The front and rear brakes are controlled by hand levers, and there is no gear lever at all. Suzuki has added a new throttle body integrated with ISC (Idle Speed ​​Control) that optimizes smooth acceleration from idle and reduced emissions. The larger cylinder capacity of 400cc for the '07 model (previously 385cc) will help keep the scooter out of trouble, and dual 260mm front and single 21mm rear disc brakes will bring the scooter to a stop in no time. Well, just perfect for city driving!

To make the ride more comfortable, the easy-to-read instrument panel will show the air temperature, and the windshield will prevent the wind from whipping your hair, unless the driver is very tall. For taller drivers, the top of the glass will be in the center of the field of view, and given the optical distortion, this will resemble wearing bifocals. But there is a simple remedy: a shorter tinted windshield can be purchased from Suzuki dealers.

Okay, it's comfortable. How practical is it? Suzuki is so proud of the Burgman's fuel efficiency that the instrument panel includes an average fuel consumption readout. Another key point is the Burgman's trunk capacity. The 62-litre under-seat boot is huge and can easily accommodate not only helmets, but also sundries like a couple of sleeping bags. Additional storage at the front of the case includes three lidded compartments (one with power ports) for smaller items such as a cell phone, camera, wallet, etc.

The Burgman 400 isn't for everyone, but if what you value in a car is efficiency with enough power for the freeway, comfort on long trips, luggage space and ease of handling, it might be perfect for you. It's also a great transition bike for a new rider who wants to move from four wheels to two, or for those who are constantly bouncing back and forth and want to think less about handling and more about their safety. This has a positive effect on fuel combustion efficiency and, as a result, technical characteristics are improved. The latest developments are aimed at improving the environmental friendliness of the scooter. The reverse supply of oxygen and the use of a catalyst reduces the level of exhaust gases. The cooling system is liquid. The engine is started using an electric starter. Fuel consumption depends on driving style. Burgman is unpretentious as a fuel; gasoline with an octane rating of at least 92 is suitable.

The chassis is very well designed. The rigidity of the frame, together with a reliable suspension, makes the scooter quite manageable. The rear suspension can be adjusted using a special key. The chassis characteristics are similar to sports motorcycles.

The automatic transmission is simple and reliable to use. The main drive is a belt drive. The brake system is hydraulic disc, providing a fairly safe stop if necessary. The combined brake system provides more reliable operation. The right lever is responsible for the front caliper, and the left one is responsible for the rear and, partially, the front. The manufacturer also cares about the impact of technology on the environment, so the engine meets the requirements of the Euro-2 standard, which expands the possibilities of access to the European market. Stylish design, serious appearance and large dimensions increase respect for this technology. High controllability, workmanship, and technical characteristics allow us to classify Burgman as a leader in the maxi-scooter class.

The dynamics amaze even the most experienced driver. A low center of gravity and a fairly rigid adjustable suspension provide complete control over the equipment. Initially, you may get the impression that this monster is not capable of high speed, but on a flat road 120-130 km/h is not the limit for it.

Bypassing the “purchase history” post, I’ll tell you about my impressions after upgrading from one sofa to another: Suzuki Burgman 400 (2002) -> Burgman 400 ABS (2015)

As is already clear, the upgrade is impressive, with a difference of 13 years and 4 generations. Plus, the new bike came packed in a container straight from the factory, so comparison with the 13-year-old previous Burgman is not entirely correct.

But because I haven’t published anything else, but I’ll still rely on the 2002 model. So, impressions from a 5000 km run on the Burgman L5:

1) It looks simply awesome.8) And not only because it’s new, but also because it’s white. Wherever you stop, they will definitely come up and ask what kind of animal it is and how much it costs 2) The seating position is slightly different than in the 2002 model - the steering wheel and seat are lower, the center of gravity seems a little the same 3) Running in is a mockery. According to the manual, 800 km to 4000 rpm is 40 km/h. If anyone is going to buy a new one - don’t be fooled - run it up to 5000 rpm with varying thrust (1/3 - 2/3) of the throttle, and up to 1500 km let’s go up to 6500 rpm 4) Handling is good like the previous model, but due to the lower landing seems a little easier 5) The brakes are great! They installed 2 discs + ABS on the front. It's an indescribable feeling when you are no longer afraid to slow down at full speed. 6) In terms of weight, the same 222 kg of dry weight, but again, due to 2 discs and ABS, braking has become better 7) The stock glass is not bad, but does not cover the hands and the flow hits the forehead, the passenger is not very comfortable in the wind. Replaced it with Givi Airflow (Separate review) The trunk has become even larger - 62 liters, plus 3 glove compartments that hold a bunch of small things and more. 2 integrals fit into the toilet without any problems. 9) Eats 3.5/4 highway-city for one and 4/4.5 for two 10) Doesn’t consume oil at all (unlike previous models). Moreover, only 1.2 liters are filled versus 1.9 in old mopeds 11) I really like the feeling when you are not afraid that something will break down on a long-distance trip. Everything works like clockwork, then every 5000 km. 12) Tank 13.5 liters. The red zone is about 4 liters. In theory, I should travel 250 km, but I fill up more often (out of boredom). 13) The 2015 model is compatible with the 2007+ models in most components and features. Those. in 8 years you can find a lot of cool things 14) Because. one of the most popular models in Europe - spare parts are not a problem.

Of the minuses: 14) Unlike the carb 2002 - if you turn it all the way from the start - it accelerates half a second slower, you can feel a failure in the operation of the variator. But if you need to shoot, it’s better to use the T-Max 530, or get Dr. Pulley Kit for (ha ha) 400 euros 15) Plastic is wildly expensive, don’t even think about putting the bike down. 16) Around 1800 km, antifreeze leaked due to insufficient tightening of the clamp. It’s a small thing, but I had to change the antifreeze and disassemble the plastic floor in order to reach it 17) It also turned out that it was almost impossible to see the level in the antifreeze window 18) They never made any indicator on the dashboard for oil pressure / level. You can only measure using the window (thanks for that, there wasn’t one in 2002) on the engine. 19) I can’t find a service (non-user) manual for the 2007+ model on the Internet. So if something breaks, or you will need to undergo maintenance with measurements of valve clearances or something else, you will need to buy a manual and give it to the technician / navigate it yourself. The cost of the manual is around $100

In any case, I’m happy with the upgrade and don’t regret a single eurocent for the new Burg. For the city, perhaps the best bike in terms of price/quality ratio.
