Honda Super Dio: second generation

Scooter Honda Live Dio AF35 SR (1994-2004)

The third generation of Dio scooters, the Honda Live Dio (AF-34), entered production in 1994. Unlike the similar Dio AF-18 and Super Dio AF-27, this model received noticeable changes, such as the new AF34E engine, which had a horizontal cylinder. In addition to the engine, the chassis has also changed. The scooter has received a new beautiful design with streamlined shapes, as well as crystal optics. For the first time, the underseat trunk has a flat floor.

The following versions of Live Dio were produced: basic (AF-34) with drum brakes, AF-34 Cesta - with a built-in front luggage basket, AF-35 SR - with a front disc brake, AF-35 SR CB (Combi Break) - with a combined braking system, AF-35 ZX - a sports version with oil shock absorbers, alloy wheels, a forced engine and a spoiler. In addition, the line included the AF-35 ST model with anti-lock brakes.

The Honda Live Dio series underwent a redesign in 1998 and was produced until 2004.

Features and Benefits

The Honda Live Dio series continues its line of city scooters. Although both the engine and chassis are now completely different. Externally, the scooter has acquired a new look, with crystal optics and a streamlined body kit.

AF-34 is even more playful than previous series. Riding such a scooter in the city is a real pleasure. Carrying things has also become easier: the underseat trunk now has a flat floor. The front has a hook for bags and a pocket for small items. And the AF-34 Cesta version has a front cargo basket (the headlight on the Cesta is located under the basket).

The AF-35 SR CB series uses the CombiBreak combined braking system for the first time. The essence of its work is to distribute the braking force when braking with the front brake: 30% of the force is transferred to the rear brake and 70% to the front. This significantly increases stability when braking, which is especially important for inexperienced drivers.

The sports version of the AF-35 ZX deserves special interest. Its suspension compares favorably with previous models, since the scooter is equipped with more comfortable and more durable oil shock absorbers instead of spring shock absorbers. The front fork travel is 95 mm. Therefore, off-road is no longer such a big problem for the AF-35 ZX. To improve dynamics, the scooter's transmission has been retuned: lighter weights are used in the variator, and stiffer springs are used in the clutch. It is also worth mentioning the front disc brake, sports muffler and beautiful alloy wheels. Well, as usual, the sports version has a spoiler with an LED brake light.

The scooter is equipped with a footrest blocker (anti-theft device).

Live Dio has retained all other advantages - reliability, ease of repair (although access to the piston group now requires significant disassembly), and availability of spare parts. Thanks to the boosted engine (7.2 hp - a record for 50 cc scooters), it has become even easier to tune the scooter.

The transmission of all Honda scooters is simple and reliable: torque is transmitted using a V-belt variator. The driver does not need to worry about changing gears, there are simply none here, so acceleration always occurs without failures and without slowdowns.

Honda Live Dio is Honda's latest range of scooters with a two-stroke engine.

Honda Super Dio: second generation

The second generation of Dio, which received the indexes AF-27 and AF-28, as well as the prefix “Super” to the name, began to be produced in 1990.

If you look at it, the 2nd generation model did not receive any technical changes; mainly engineers and designers worked on the appearance and ergonomics so that their scooter would not lag behind competitors from Yamaha and Suzuki.

They decided not to abandon the AF18E engine, especially since it has proven itself to be reliable and trouble-free. The engineers just “conjured” the settings, increasing the power in the base to 6.8 hp.

The scooter was produced in three main modifications:

  • Super Dio AF-27 is the base model with drum brakes on all wheels;
  • Super Dio AF-28 SR is a more expensive and prestigious modification, distinguished by a modified engine with increased power and a front disc brake;
  • Super Dio AF-28 ZX - the most expensive version, in fact, the same SR, only with a spoiler instead of a rear trunk, and in a brighter color scheme.

Although production of the third generation began in 1994, the Dio AF-27/AF-28 model was mass produced until 1996, and then until 1999 in small-scale modifications with deep restalling.

Features, advantages and disadvantages

Until now, the Honda Dio AF-27/AF-28 model is considered one of the most popular in Russia, second only to the third generation modification. The secret of popularity is simple - low price on the used market, reliability, conditional availability of spare parts, high maintainability.

Apart from appearance, technically the scooter has hardly changed - having inherited, in this regard, all the advantages of the first generation model.

The AF18E engine, already tested in the previous generation of the model, was modified to increase power. This was achieved by changing the diameter of the crankshaft. The maximum speed of the scooter is electronically limited to 60 km/h, although there is enough power reserve to accelerate the vehicle to 70 km/h.

The maximum speed limit is made not only because of the peculiarities of the legislation - if you do not turn the engine to the maximum, it will last longer. If desired, the power limiter can be removed; on the AF-27/AF-28 model, this will require replacing the switch.

The engine runs great on 92 gasoline, although it is best to fill it with 95. Fuel consumption is about 2.5 liters per 100 km.

External changes to the Honda Super Dio have made it possible to increase the usable volume of the underseat luggage compartment. There is a special pocket on the front for various small items. The AF-28 ZX model has a more aggressive design, bright colors and the presence of a stylish spoiler with a brake light instead of a rear luggage platform.

This scooter can be used not only in the city, but also in rural areas - as thousands of owners confirm. Despite the “city” ground clearance, the main components of the scooter are protected from damage - all impacts are absorbed by the footrest and bottom. Of course, this is not very pleasant and does not always pass without consequences for the scooter, but the muffler and engine usually remain unharmed.

In terms of chassis, the AF-27 and AF-28 are no different from the previous AF-18 and AF-25 - they still have the same telescopic fork at the front and a monoshock absorber at the rear.

You need to understand that most scooters are designed specifically for urban use, so it is advisable to prepare them for rural areas - change the shock absorbers, fill the fork with high-viscosity oil, and install more “evil” tires.

In general, if you need a scooter specifically for rural areas, then it is better to pay attention to the “Tact” model, and if you increase your budget a little, then you can look towards the “Lida”.

Getting spare parts for the Honda Dio AF27/AF28 is not a problem, although if you need a high-quality original, you will have to wait for it (mostly Chinese spare parts are available).

The AF18E engine is loved for its highest maintainability, where, thanks to the vertical arrangement of the cylinder, all work on the piston group can be carried out without removing the engine.

Characteristics of Super Dio

  • engine – AF18E (two-stroke with a displacement of 49 cm³ and a power of 6.8 hp for the base model);
  • cooling – air;
  • gas tank volume – 5 liters;
  • oil tank volume – 1.2 liters;
  • front suspension – telescopic;
  • rear suspension - pendulum;
  • front brake type – drum (AF-27) or disc (AF-28);
  • rear brake type – drum;
  • base – 1145 mm;
  • length – 1640 mm;
  • ground clearance - 100 mm;
  • total weight – 66 kg.

The second generation Honda Dio, with proper care, will last for a very long time. The main thing is to initially find a decent and well-maintained copy.

Honda Dio AF-18/25 scooter review

The first Honda Dio scooters appeared in 1988, and these were the Dio AF-18. This model was originally produced with drum brakes. Then, in 1990, the AF-25 SR model appeared with a disc front brake. Scooters of these models gained well-deserved success, and were produced until 1992, when they were replaced by a new product - Super Dio (AF-27/28). However, to this day the AF-18/25 remains a good choice for beginners, because the scooter is inexpensive and reliable.

Specifications

Engine: Engine type – AF18E, displacement 49 cc. see Number of cylinders – 1. Number of strokes – 2. Cooling system – forced air cooling. Maximum engine power – 6.4 hp. at 6500 rpm. Torque – 0.74 kg*m / 6000 rpm. Compression ratio – 7.3. Transmission – variator. Ignition - electric starter. The tire size of the front and rear wheels is 3.00-10. Oil tank volume – 0.8 l. Gas tank volume – 4.8 liters. Maximum speed – 60 km/h (electronically limited). Chassis: Front wheel suspension type – telescopic. The rear wheel suspension type is pendulum. Front wheel brake type – drum (AF-18), disc (AF-25 SR). The rear wheel brake type is drum. Size and weight: Base – 1135 mm. Length – 1600 mm. Seat height – 700 mm. Ground clearance – 100 mm. Total weight – 63 kg.

Advantages and disadvantages

Honda Dio AF-18 and AF-25 scooters are great for riding on asphalt and are an excellent choice for the city. The front telescopic suspension is moderately rigid, with a small stroke, which makes it possible to actively maneuver on the road. The scooter grips the road perfectly and allows you to take turns at high speed. In an urban environment, the Honda Dio is easy to maneuver in traffic jams. True, the shock absorbers that form the basis of the Dio telescopic fork are very demanding on a smooth road, because every crack in the asphalt will be reflected in the steering wheel.

However, the AF-18 can also be driven on dirt roads. Only in this case you will have to get used to the shaking, as well as to periodically replacing the shock absorbers. Fortunately, this procedure is very simple, and buying new shock absorbers is also easy.

But in all other respects, the Honda Dio AF-18 and AF-25 scooters are extremely reliable and do not require repairs over many thousands of kilometers. The most important part of the scooter - the engine - is so successful in design that it is not afraid of any operating conditions, is undemanding to fuel, and can even run on 80-octane gasoline. The air intake openings (both the air filter and the cooling system) are located quite high, which protects the mechanisms from dust and water.

Honda Dio is quite economical, consuming (in ideal conditions) 2-2.5 liters of gasoline per 100 km. Approximate oil consumption is 0.8 l/1000 km.

Honda Dio AF-18 is designed to carry one person, but it is quite capable of carrying a passenger. The dynamics and power of the engine are quite sufficient for a comfortable ride for two. The maximum speed is limited to 60 km/h, but it can be easily increased using simple methods - for example, boring the variator (or installing a sports variator), replacing the switch with an analogue without limiting engine speed. All other parts can easily withstand the acceleration of the scooter up to 80 km/h.

The AF-25 SR is equipped with a front disc brake, which is more effective on asphalt than a drum brake. However, when operating in dusty conditions, the disc brake requires more careful maintenance because it is open and can become clogged.

Honda Dio AF-18/25 has a spacious underseat luggage compartment, but does not have a pocket in the front.

Scooter maintenance consists mainly of periodic cleaning of the air filter.

Scooters of the Honda Dio AF-18/25 family are highly reliable in operation, so it is not surprising that even at the age of more than 20 years they are still in service.
