Motospring 2021: customization and some new products

The next MotoSpring exhibition (with the index 2021) was held at the capital's Expocenter. In parallel with MotoSpring, two other exhibitions of related topics were held there - Motorsport Expo and Velokult. Sometimes, moving from hall to hall, it was difficult to understand what specific event you were at - in all three pavilions, two-wheelers ruled the roost, and four-wheelers demonstrated not so much involvement in the sport as spectacular tuning. Let's walk through here leisurely, noting the most interesting technique.

Motorcycle Spring 2021 is not so much an exhibition as a show. Bikers love to make everything into a party, an iron march and sparkling gloss. Therefore, there were almost no academically impeccable world premieres here. One of the exceptions: Harley-Davidson decided to show its Pan America 1250 model from the new Adventure Touring series in Moscow. Or, in Russian speaking, a crossover.

In 2021, the Americans showed a prototype, the road to the assembly line of which took longer than expected. Well, it's clear why. The global online presentation took place recently - on February 22. And now Pan America flaunts on the podium of the Expo Center. Not a Harley-style discreet design, a V-shaped aluminum 152-horsepower V-twin Revolution Max engine and a rather modest weight (258 kg). And also a chain drive, integration of the engine into the supporting structure of the frame (the steering column, rear subframe and rear swingarm are attached directly to the crankcase). The “trick” of the model is the ability to “squat” when stopping, implemented by a smart active suspension.

Obviously, this is a direct competitive slap in the direction of the BMW R1250GS, which has 16 hp. weaker, although a little more powerful. Prices are already known: the base Pan America is offered for 1.6 million rubles, and the Special version with an active suspension, an adjustable brake pedal, a Daymaker headlight that illuminates corners in an inclined position, and some other options costs 1.8 million. Sales in Russia are expected to begin in July.

The appearance in Moscow of Yamaha Niken, model 2021, whose sales in Russia started quite recently, is also interesting. Niken doesn’t seem to be a tricycle, but just a three-wheeled motorcycle: its two front wheels are only 40 cm apart, according to Ackerman’s scheme. Yamaha itself calls this arrangement a two-wheel front suspension.

The advantages of independent suspension of each of the two front wheels are stability in corners, even with critical rolls. And the trapezoid of a two-axis design ensures that the trajectory is independent of braking.

Niken has a "hybrid" frame consisting of steel and aluminum tubes and alloy elements of the subframe and swingarm. In-line three-cylinder engine, 850 cc/115 hp. But the car turned out to be expectedly heavy, 263 kg. And not cheap - 1,384,000 rubles.

The same Yamaha also showed the newest four-seater all-terrain vehicle Wolverine RMAX4 1000 SE. Which is quite an SUV, on wheels with an outer diameter of 29 inches and with an adjustable suspension Fox 2.0 QS3. Liter engine, 109 hp.

Bike culture is, to one degree or another, a worship of iron. It was the bikers who elevated forged, cast, and welded crafts into a cult, which are sometimes terrifying in their brutality, and sometimes resemble works of art. The latter include the works of Semyon Pezhar, a metal artist from Kaluga. His works are technically challenging, but from the point of view of taste they are impeccable. Even models in the style of deliberate primitivism attract the eye, let alone fantasies on free themes.

Semyon makes his sculptures both from the heart and to order. The pleasure is not cheap, but there are buyers, even asking for perfectly detailed copies of real motorcycles.

It was interesting to see the English Morgan 3 Wheeler car at the exhibition.

However, why a car? This is a tricycle that requires a category A license. This particular example was released in 2021, but in general the company has been producing such “sub-motorcycles” since 2011. Although, in essence, this is a modern reproduction of a design dating back to 1953. The engine is made by the English company S&S, which supplies units including for Harley-Davidson and Indian. A two-liter 82-horsepower V-shaped “air vent” accelerates the 525-kilogram roadster to 100 km/h in 6 seconds. And the “maximum speed” is 185 km/h, which is scary for such a tricycle.

And here's a little adventure for you: the team of motorcycle traveler Alexander Yunanov decided to conquer... Antarctica! As a warm-up, in 2022 they will go to the North Pole, and a year later to the Ice Continent. On Zubr tricycles, which are built in small series in Ostrovetsy near Moscow. Interestingly, the trikes are equipped with the most primitive Honda carburetor engines from portable generators. But they say they are very reliable and can thresh for months. For polar travel, the standard Bisons have been strengthened in terms of suspension and modified to take into account low temperatures. As one of the participants in the upcoming expeditions, Igor Golovaty, said, three cars and six people will go to Antarctica. The whole idea is designed for about a week and 300 km: they leave the Barneo base and return to it. This is a test ride, just to announce the first motorcycle trip to Antarctica. Therefore, they do not ride on more suitable ATVs, but on trikes, which are technically motorcycles. But even on this first run, the guys will spend, without taking into account the cost of equipment, somewhere around 15-20 million rubles.

One of BMW's new products is the restyled “tourist” R 1250 RT. Now there is an LED headlight that illuminates turns, a fully electronic “tidy” with navigation, new “music”, active cruise control and even a platform for contactless charging of a smartphone. The hardware of the motorcycle has not changed, but the design has become more impressive.

The next exhibit is worth a closer look if the properties of a production supercar are not enough for you and you want “this and that”. Here, for example, is the Audi R8. This isn't just a redesign. This is a car where all the metal and plastic faceplates have been replaced with carbon fiber ones. The Moscow company Carbon Factory has its own production base for working with carbon fiber and carries out orders for various industries - from furniture to aviation. Well, for the automotive industry, of course. All carbon parts are the same size as stock, including thickness and mounting points. So you can order, say, a separate hood: screw it on and go. In this project, the guys did not deny themselves the pleasure of giving the car a small facelift, changing the bumpers, sills, rear diffuser and spoiler. They speak carefully about the price: “one and a half to two million.” In addition to obtaining a spectacular look, the machine sheds about 70 kg of weight. Such an alteration does not require any changes in the title (according to a company representative), but, in an amicable way, the safety parameters have clearly changed here and the car must be tested again.

One of the obvious oddities of the current MotoSpring is the almost complete absence of electric bikes. If electric bicycles were presented in some quantity, then full-fledged electric motorcycles had to be looked for. What is it - the inertia of industrialists and sellers who do not keep up with the supposed global trend, or the ignoring of this imposed trend by real life? Only time will give the answer. In the meantime, this is one of the very few electric bikes at the exhibition, from the Novosibirsk company Eco Wheel, which orders its products from China. This is the simplest device with a maximum speed of 65 km/h and a power reserve of up to 80 km. The 60-volt, 30 Ah removable battery weighs just over 10 kg. But already in the summer they plan to sell a modification with a 45 Ah battery. The only thing that reconciles with reality is the price of this single-seat electric scooter - 190 thousand rubles.

Another CustomTuningShow was held at Motovesna. And in general, there were almost more works of customizers than production bikes. Some specimens were downright striking in their neatness of manufacture and boldness of form. The level of Russian customization is now very high, there is something to be proud of and something to look at for a wealthy person who is not very happy with replicated factory designs.

Probably the most spectacular Motovesna custom is this example from Dmitry Golubchikov, head of the Zillers Motorcycles studio.

This car is not new, it was built in 2019-2020 and has already been shown in many places. She even managed to win the AMD World Customization Championship. But it does not lose its relevance. The name is given by the brand of engine used here - Vincent HRD 1950. Not the original, of course, but a replica created by an English company.

There are many original technical solutions in this project. What are the brakes worth, which are not even disc brakes, but ring ones, with fixed calipers! This solution is almost unknown in the motorcycle world, although it is patented. For Vincent, it was “reinvented” by project engineer Andrei Stepanov, who at one time worked at ZiL and is known as the chief designer of the futuristic armored car Punisher/Falcatus.

Zillers Motorcycles builds unusual motorcycles based on the production BMW R nineT, completely changing the appearance. Moreover, the parts are made not of plastic, but of aluminum!

And a completely redesigned car with air suspension and a lower fairing into which the footrest is integrated can be ordered for 7 million rubles

Another fantastic custom - from the Leo Brutal Motorcycle workshop near Moscow. She is known for a series of works by PVG, 7.62 and BrOO, created according to classical patterns, with pretentiousness that goes beyond all limits. And the new bike from LBM is emphatically laconic, even lapidary. That's why it captivates. By the way, there is no plastic here either, everything is made of aluminum.

It's not just motorcycles that are custom. In the cycling world, this phenomenon is no less widespread, although it rests more on enthusiasm than on an effective business model. How do you like bicycles with frames made of plywood and wooden slats?

The Strizh electric bicycle car by Stanislav Khudatov, built on the basis of the famous trike by Vadim Dunaev and Alexander Sergeev. The entire history of this vehicle is described by the author himself, who has been working on the car since 2021. Now "Strizh" is used as an everyday vehicle

Another well-known project is the MK-17 gyromobile. It is assembled on a Chinese chassis and is famous for not falling; it is supported by an active suspension and a complex stabilization system based on a gyroscope. Despite the rosy statements about the imminent start of production, the market prospects for MK-17 are still vague. But the price has already been announced: with a 3-kilowatt motor, the gyromobile will cost 360,000 rubles

This strange three-wheeled velomobile is a small-scale creation of a well-known inventor in the cycling world, Vladimir Shtrakin. The main advantage of this arrangement is ease of fit. Well, it’s safe: you won’t fall. Sufficiently large wheels (24 inches) provide a good smooth ride. And the price is “good” - 150,000 rubles. The frame is based on a D-16 duralumin riveted pipe; this technology is taken from aviation. But forming such a pipe is no longer technologically accessible to the developer, so when repeating this design, classical welding will be used in the future.

In total, about 160 of these bicycles were made and sold - not bad for a single artisan who makes one car for a month or two.

Motorcycle Spring 2021 and the accompanying exhibitions turned out to be very spectacular, with an abundance of original motorcycle projects. And what’s important: the Expo Center wasn’t crowded, like it was a few years ago in Sokolniki; there was enough space for everyone. In general, it was a great event: both the party and the show.
