Test drive Geon Scrambler 250. What's in my name?

The name Geon Scrambler 250 bizarrely coincides with both the proper name and the bike’s belonging to a certain class.

The knocked-down silhouette of the Geon Scrambler 250 attracts attention and gives a sense of integrity to the motorcycle. Designers and engineers endowed it with brutal beauty, where there is nothing superfluous. Everything is simple and reliable.

The space-tube birdcage frame is reminiscent of the Honda CB450s. The choice of such a frame, the advantage of which is excellent rigidity with minimal weight, coupled with an inverted telescopic fork installed at the front, once again reminds us of the “omnivorous” nature of the motorcycle. At the rear there is a regular steel swingarm with a monoshock absorber without progression.

A simple but at the same time reliable design gives the inexpensive Geon Scrambler 250 great potential on the Ukrainian market

The CR6 engine, well known from other Geon models, has taken root well on the Scrambler 250. This is a simple, lightweight and reliable unit with oil cooling, a carburetor power system and a 6-speed gearbox. It should be especially noted that the engineers tried to raise the power unit as high as possible, which increased the ground clearance to a respectable 260 mm - almost like some “adult” enduros.

To stop the motorcycle are hydraulic disc brakes (270 mm in diameter and with a 2-piston caliper at the front and 210 mm with a 1-piston caliper at the rear) on 17-inch spoked wheels. The tires also fit perfectly into the general concept of a brutal motorcycle: massive wide rims with large all-terrain “donuts” will allow you to feel comfortable both on asphalt and on the ground.

The instrument panel looks laconic, but in practice it is very convenient

The highlight of the Geon Scrambler 250 can be considered the all-LED lighting technology, which shines very brightly even during the day. The motorcycle fenders also deserve attention. Made from fashionable brushed aluminum, they give the bike a finished look. The rear does a good job of protecting the shock absorber from dirt flying onto it. This motorcycle also has unusually installed mirrors - at the end. Moreover, they can be either fixed in the upper position or turned down, giving them a resemblance to a Cafe Racer.

Specifications

For an affordable price you will get a full-fledged enduro motorcycle with excellent characteristics. Economy plays an important role here, so fuel consumption was only 4.5 liters/100 km. The engine, with a volume of 249 cubic meters and 1 cylinder, is capable of producing considerable power of 26 horsepower. Consequently, when using the equipment on a normal road, the maximum speed will be 110 km/h. To control the motorcycle off-road, the design is as lightweight as possible; the total weight of the motorcycle is 135 kg.

Control takes place through the well-known 6-speed manual gearbox. The motor is especially interesting to many enduro enthusiasts, because Baltmotors installed a SOHC system, the valves are titanium, and the engine itself received a balance shaft to prevent vibration. Now such a Chinese is used with a liquid cooling system, the characteristics are also offered with two engine starting options - kickstarter or electric starter. With a fuel tank capacity of 8 liters, the instructions recommend using AI-95 gasoline.

Pros and cons of Baltmotors Motard 250

Advantages

  • No problems finding spare parts. However, they are rarely required, since the motorcycle is in no hurry to break down.
  • A peppy engine with good low-end traction. There are almost no parasitic vibrations typical of single-cylinder engines.
  • Economical. The fuel consumption of the BM 250 Motard is approximately 3-3.3 liters per 100 km.
  • Not bad brakes. Not wonderful, but rather quite good.
  • Energy-intensive pendants. The upside-down front fork deserves special praise.
  • High quality plastic. Quite durable and at the same time flexible.

Flaws

  • High price, especially for a Russian-Chinese motorcycle. For the price of a Baltmotors Motard 250 you can buy a not too ancient Japanese bike of the same class.
  • Heavy weight. The dry weight of the motorcycle reaches 140 kg, which is quite a lot by the standards of the class.
  • The seat is too hard and slippery.

Design Features

The Baltmotors company has always been distinguished by the high quality of assembly of its motorcycles, so the new enduro turned out to be a successful model. Externally, the new product will surprise anyone, because it differs from competitors in terms of power by the presence of a front shield, which is raised quite high. The front suspension looks aggressive and powerful, which only improves the visual effect of the motorcycle. With its low weight and good maneuverability, the motorcycle is excellent for performing tricks.

The overall appearance does not raise any questions among experienced bikers. Everything is stylish, modern and neat. They decided to make the seat comfortable, but completely flat and narrow. There is an inverted fork installed at the front, which performs its functions perfectly when traveling off-road. The frame is diagonal and made of high strength aluminum, withstands heavy loads and dangerous jumps. Already today, a number of tests have been completed, where it was determined that the suspension and frame fully fulfill their duties, and there is no doubt about their reliability. At the rear, the manufacturer decided to install a pendulum suspension with 1 adjustable shock absorber.

The ability to adjust the suspension to the road situation allows you to absorb heavy loads, making it more comfortable to take sharp turns. Often, thanks to good suspension and excellent interaction of the engine with other parts, the Baltsomotrs 250 Dakar has one of the best prices, and the model itself is often used for racing. For city driving or very maneuverable driving, disc brakes will help ensure proper safety.

Are you ready for Dakar?

Domestic motorcycle manufacturers are haunted by the achievements of motorcyclists at the world famous Dakar marathon rally. It was founded by French motorcycle racer T. Sabin in 1978. Before it was transferred to Latin America due to the danger of terrorist attacks, the capital of African Senegal, Dakar, was the starting or ending point of this race. This competition is traditionally held annually in the first month of the year. The length of the Dakar route is several thousand kilometers. The route goes along a variety of roads. Riders are forced to travel along:

  • sands;
  • dunes and dunes;
  • rocky ground;
  • rocks and salt marshes.

During the race there are often sandstorms and sometimes rain. The complexity of the Dakar route is such that a significant part of the starting cars do not reach the finish line. It is interesting that, along with professional racers and teams of auto and motorcycle manufacturers, numerous amateurs take part here. Their number may account for more than half of the participants, most of whom are motorcyclists and ATV riders. At one time, it was at these competitions that two-wheeled vehicles from world motorcycle brands convincingly proved their ability to successfully compete with four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles in such races. Therefore, the market demanded a machine capable of passing the most severe tests. This is how the baltmotors dakar 250 appeared. Motard with that name turned out to be a pretty cool motorcycle.

This model appeared on the roads in 2014. Its versions, called Dakar 250 Motard and Dakar 250 E, were intended for different purposes. The first is for the difficult conditions of a big city with its intense traffic and kilometer-long traffic jams. What was needed here was a dakar, capable of either trudging along at minimal speeds or instantly picking up speed when escaping from a jam. The second option was made for those who cannot imagine themselves without extreme off-road travel, mountains, and difficult road terrain. Reliability of Dakar cars is provided by a 28-horsepower liquid-cooled engine. They have excellent handling, stability in the most difficult conditions, and excellent maneuverability. This is achieved thanks to a balanced suspension, a strong and lightweight aluminum frame, light metal parts, and a fork that can be adjusted to suit the trail conditions.

Advantages

As a result, a number of reviews and successful test drives showed that the Dakar 250 enduro motorcycle from Chinese-Russian cooperation has the following advantages:

  1. Simple and powerful engine, easy to operate. Excellent performance and power are characterized by the presence of titanium valves.
  2. Driving safety is ensured by powerful brakes, an aluminum diagonal frame and a proprietary suspension.
  3. Comfortable, true enduro-style riding position.
  4. One of the best engines from China, characterized by high build quality and durable parts.
  5. Availability of spare parts on the market; universal parts are used in the motorcycle.

As a result, we can safely say that the Chinese motorcycle differs from its competitors in its excellent characteristics and quality created by the Baltmotors brand. For an affordable price, it is possible to buy a truly faithful friend who will cope with any off-road conditions and will be an excellent assistant at important races.

How did the motard appear?

Their history begins in the seventies of the last century. Then American motorcyclists created a new motorcycle style. It was a symbiosis of a road and cross-country motorcycle. From a distance, it's an ordinary motocross motorcycle. Upon closer inspection, it turns out that its wheels, instead of cool motocross tires, have regular road tires. However, its off-road potential allows you to overcome any difficulties on the roads, overcome curbs, and even drive up stairs. These motorcycles are sometimes called supermotos. Under this name, since 1985, competitions on similar motorcycles have been held on looped asphalt or dirt tracks of relatively short length. Additionally, they are used for various tricks such as wheelie or wheelie. Particularly chic are exiting turns on the rear wheel during racing or skidding before entering a turn. The world's leading motorcycle manufacturing companies, quickly catching the feedback from motorcyclists, have mastered the production of such machines, which are extremely popular among extreme sports enthusiasts. The Russian company is also trying to keep up with them, offering the market several options for baltmotors motard. According to their technical characteristics, the baltmotors motard 200 and its more powerful brother the baltmotors motard 250 are ideal for urban conditions in terms of handling, dynamics and ergonomics. These narrow cars maneuver easily in city traffic jams and quickly pick up speed once they get out of them. This is largely due to their relatively light weight and ease of control. Cross ground clearance makes overcoming the toughest obstacles a hassle-free task. It is no coincidence that the popularity of these cars is growing, and people are willing to buy them.

Flaws

With the exception of the incomprehensible idea of installing sports clip-ons on a city bike, other disadvantages are minor. Users noted:

  • Vibrations. The usual story for cylinder 1, but the owner of the Baltmotors street will have to often check the tightness of all kinds of locknuts.
  • Clip-ons. An incomprehensible idea from the developers, especially considering that the hexagons on which they are attached will require a special wrench for tightening. You will have to check it often, so you need to buy a key. Or replace the clip-ons with a classic steering wheel:
    Classic high steering wheel.

    Mounting posts.

    View from below.

  • Stock pens.
    There is no way to fold or adjust. When traveling with two fingers, there is a possibility of pinching the others. When braking with two fingers, the lever rests on the ring finger and little finger.

and dignity

The advantages of the bike exactly repeat everything that is usually said about Chinese motorcycles.

  • Maintainability.
  • Wide selection of components.
  • Price.
  • Dashboard.
    If desired, the original instrumentation can be easily replaced with a more modern electronic one, for example, KOSO with a digital speedometer.

In addition, all owners note the fuel tank. According to this parameter, the motorcycle is an absolute record holder in its class. For bikes identical in other respects, the reserve rarely exceeds 20 liters. 22 l - no one has it.

On the way to perfection

Improvements are constantly being made to both of these machines. In recent years they have undergone a number of modernizations. As a result, they got:

  1. characterized by high strength chains and sprockets;
  2. tires of excellent quality with a high profile and strong sidewall;
  3. additionally reinforced 17-inch wheels;
  4. reliable disc brakes.

This makes for reliable grip on any road surface. Both baltmotors motard 200 dd and baltmotors motard 250 dd are equipped with powerful and reliable four-stroke engines manufactured under Japanese license. They have undergone ten years of testing in different modes. However, the first one is air cooled. It is traditional for most motorcycle engines. The increased power of the second required air-oil cooling. The cars have an electric starter and an electronic ignition system. Taking into account the operating conditions, the main units in the machines are reliably protected. Thus, the engine crankcase is protected from impacts from below with light and durable protection made of aluminum alloys.

The same function is performed by durable and aesthetic plastic cladding. The suspensions have sufficient travel, which, together with wide wheels and a hydraulic braking system, make it possible to pass the most difficult sections of both city and country roads. Both brakes effectively reduce the distance to a complete stop.

This is also helped by reinforced hoses of the brake system, which is important in harsh operating conditions. This is best demonstrated by the 21-horsepower baltmotors motard 250 dd

Feedback from motorcycle owners confirms the correctness of the improvements made. These motorcycles are easy to ride. The driver has the opportunity to constantly monitor the car, receiving information about its condition. This is helped by the extremely clear dashboard. In addition to the speedometer and tachometer, it has a mileage counter. Special indicators show which gear is engaged and which direction the turn signal is turned on. Despite the narrow seat, the motorcycle is comfortable to sit on, and special footrests allow you to move while standing, which is necessary to overcome difficult obstacles. The efficient optics of modern design are pleasantly surprising. This greatly simplifies driving at night, especially on country roads. Numerous reviews also speak about this.

Conclusion

Baltmotors Dakar 250 is equally well suited for both ordinary off-road enthusiasts and novice athletes who need professional motorcycle equipment. It is, of course, inferior in characteristics to its eminent competitors from Europe and Japan, but this is already a question of price - the fruit of Russian-Chinese cooperation is noticeably cheaper. And we must admit that it fully justifies every ruble paid for it. Durable and reliable, this bike is capable of surviving many competitions, and under more moderate operating conditions you can’t expect problems with it at all.

Advantages and disadvantages

Baltmotors Dakar 250 is a unique motorcycle, unlike most other Chinese enduros. It costs much more than most of them, and has its own set of positive and negative qualities. But due to the rather high price, we will evaluate it to the fullest extent.

Advantages

  • Fully adjustable suspension front and rear allowing you to fine tune it to suit your weight and riding style.
  • Unification of many parts with European and Japanese models, which simplifies the process of finding spare parts and tuning.
  • A powerful engine with excellent low-end traction and impressive cubic capacity for a 250 cc bike.
  • Flexible and durable plastic that can withstand most of the falls that are inevitable in off-road riding.
  • Standard crankcase protection protects the engine from impacts.

Flaws

  • The need for frequent maintenance, especially when operating under high loads.
  • The BM S2 Dakar 250 engine is not suitable for long driving with a uniform load, especially at high speed.
  • Hard and slippery standard seat.
  • Small range both on and off the pavement.

Repair and tuning

A specific technique requires a special approach. Fortunately, thanks to the design features of this model, it is easy to maintain, and there are no problems with maintenance and tuning. Unless, of course, you don't mind spending a little, as some parts can cost quite a bit of money.

Repair

Your bike needs to be serviced frequently, especially if it is subjected to stress on a regular basis. If you operate your steel horse as usual, then maintenance can be carried out by mileage, and not by engine hours, following the recommendations in the manual. Everything in it can be repaired, or in extreme cases, replaced. The less the motorcycle falls and breaks, the less often you will have to do this.

Spare parts

Official dealers often do not have spare parts in stock, but the design of the Baltmotors Dakar 250 uses a huge number of components from third-party manufacturers. So you can pick up almost anything, even if you have to spend time finding the right parts. Some things come from Chinese bikes, some from European ones, and some from Japanese ones.

Tuning

The same can be said about tuning as about spare parts - it is universal, and its choice is very wide. The cost depends on what exactly you need - hand protection or, for example, new running boards can be bought inexpensively, but more technically complex elements can cost a pretty penny.

Modifications and competitors

Among the Baltmotors model range you can find the Baltmotors motard 250 dd.

Baltmotors Motard 250 DD – the model belongs to the enduro class.

In terms of performance characteristics, it is similar to a road car, a little weaker. But:

  • comfortable classic fit;
  • less consumption;
  • accelerates well;
  • Convenient for short motorcyclists (feet to reach the ground).

The Yamaxa YBR125 is positioned as a lightweight road bike for beginners.

Interestingly, being a direct descendant of Suzuki, it has no competitors. Most reviews compare it to Yobrik (Yamaxa YBR125).

Unlike the schoolboy, Baltmotors has disc brakes on both axles and reinforced hoses. Top speed and cruise are also not in favor of the Yamaxa.

In terms of consumption, YBR is more economical, but it is also 2 times smaller in engine volume.
